Good afternoon All,

Just trying to catch up posts and see what's up. New Jersey went well enough though it rained Sunday, but Saturday was great as was the Friday test day.

Jeff - I think the foam surround will be ok, just make sure the straps to hold the tank down are through bolted and the piece you put between the hard metal floor anf the hard meatl tank is sturdy but soft (thin expanded foam or similar would work ok - plywood in a pinch - rubber sheet would be best). Make sure the tank is grounded to the shell of the van as well. There is special filler hose for fuel as well, make sure you use that (it's a special polymer that won't degrade from contact with fuel) though it's got a wire in it that's hard to cut andit's not very flexible so it needs to be a close fit on the metal piping to the tank. If you think about it, lots of tanks are in the trunk and only seperated from the passenger compartment by some upholstery and a bit of hardboard. The one on the Triumph Spitfire is suspended only a foot from the driver and passenger and has just that, a piece of hardboard covered with vinyl between tank and occupants.

What does concern me is the idea of welding on the hardened sterring shaft. If the shear pin is broken in the column, it's probable that it could be driven out and replaced though with a bit of effort. Yould have to grind down the upset part of the pin to get it to the right diameter to drive out, but once that's done (hammer and drift) the pin could  be replaced with a new pin or the close fitting bolt of your choice. The problem with welding the hardened shaft is your life is dependant on the skill of the welder and the temper of the two metal shafts he's joining. One bounce off a curb and the shaft could snap (usually next to the weld where it becomes brittle) and poof - you're rudderless. Drive shafts especially on front drive cars are usually much more ductile which is why you got away with welding on the axel (bet you wouldn't get by with that on an output flange).  Food for thought and have a care my friend.   J.R.

Ah, dinners on me - surf and turf anyone?

afernoon ya'll. Looks like I'll be having a huge pitcher of lemon-lime gatorade and some watermelons.

still feel like crap, 4 days after I started. I talked to some people and they said I could just be really dehydrated. So I've been chugging powerade and water on and off for the past few hours. Work has been kind of tough recently because of that, and to top it off the tourists are here in full force.

Sawyer, sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Jeff,  Just out of curiosity, have you tried tanks from similar cars or cars that shared the same chassis design? You also might be able to order one through an autoparts store.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Canadians .... HAPPY VICTORIA DAY !!!! .... Did you save some Tim Hortons coffee?

Sawyer ... Sorry to hear about your Grandmother's illness. Your faith in God's plan is to be respected. I bet your grandmother can tell you how fast the years go by. When you reach her age, you will understand through your own experiences. It appears yopu use your time wisely, and that's good. When you reach older years, you can't get time back.  Thumbs up to you.

Vincent ... Hope you feel better.

Todd ... Praying the surgery went OK today for little Anthony.

Ray ... Looking forward to seeing pix when steam shovel is complete. I know those Jordan kits have tiny, fragile parts.

I'm still laying track on the layout.

Already tried that. The ones that fit are rusted out and the new aftermarket replacement is ribbed and the straps don't fit correctly.

Decaf coffee, please.

This is train related. Bought 4 metal 54mm toy soldiers. Not going to start up collecting again, rather, going to touch these up with paint and resell them to add to the train funds. Still working on identifying the manufacture. Expect even after paying the-bay fees, doubling my investment should be easy to do.

Now leaning heavily towards a new Bachmann Heavy Mountain. Already sold off my cra*** Light Mountain. A good running Heavy Mountain would be a nice addition to any steam RR, wouldn't you agree?Cool Still contemplating on what else to sell off and what to acquire.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

This is a tank from an Isuzu diesel truck. No straps. Instead it bolts down on the sides. It will be bolted to the framework supports. I already planned ahead for the grounding. A ground wire will be secured under one of the bolts and bolted to the seat frame. Two tie-downs will be added for additional hold-down tension. The bottom of the containment unit will be plywood with a metal drip pan with two pine strips for the tank to sit on. The drip pan will have a hole in the center for drainage through the floor should a leak occur.

Jeff,

That should be more than adequate - good that the tank actually bolts down. The reason for the recommendation for the fuel worthy fill hose is we've had cars come in with regular rad hose instead of the right stuff and it's cracked and become extremely brittle in less than a year. NAPA etc carry the hose as will most non "bubble pack" parts stores (you know what I mean - real parts stores).  J.R.

My latest project has been to duplicate various loads and crates for the model railroad.  Here are a few examples of what I did… If you follow the link to the album and click on next to see all the pictures. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2644631090029441264nbckse?vhost=home-and-garden Pictures 1-4 The first few pictures are of a crate, the original is on the right and the copy is on the left.  The camera has a habit of magnifying the details, when you hold these crates you cannot see the orange dots on the original and you can’t see the air bubble holes on the copy.  The copy is made of a two part plastic rubber compound, it’s hard as a wheel on a pair of skates. Pictures 5-8 This is a larger crate, but no placard detail as the previous crate. Pictures 9-11 These are made from plaster and so far painted with two colors.  These are scrap loads for gondolas and measure 47 scale feet.  I will be adding more color tonight and tomorrow to these. Pictures 12-13 These are stacks of lumber, the casting on the right is plaster of Paris and the left is the two part plastic.   I think the plaster held more details.

The last image
This is the mold I made with a soft two part latex compound.  You can see there is ample support for the casting resin or plaster and a level base. Why go through the trouble?  The small white crate you saw costs $3 each, the lumber loads cost $5 each and the scrap loads can cost up to $17 each at the store.  All the materials used to create the molds and cast the parts cost $80.  It will make over 2000 crates($6,000.00), 100 scrap loads ($1,700.00) or 100 stacks of lumber ($500).

Evening all. Chloe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

Wow I have a lot to catch up on... Where do I start... I don't even know where I stopped...

We ordered our class rings a few weeks ago. I got the silver one with the blue square, lacrosse and name on one side, hockey and year on the other. We get the rings at the ring liturgy next December.

Last night was the lacross banquet, and I got my varsity letter. I'm thinking I'll get a jacket next year, although it'll have to be for Christmas. Yeah, that means less trains for Christmas, but I want the jacket.

Don't know if I mentioned it before, but I have a job interview this Saturday for badge checking this summer. I'm assuming I'll get it, since I applied for a maintenance position, but emailed me asking if I was interested in a badge checking job. I hear they get good pay, even they do basically nothing! Yay train money!

The Transit service cuts went in effect yesterday. We'll see what uproars come in the next few days.
Hopefully this won't affect Sam or any other people in LETP or the extra board too much...

Well, I guess I'll shut up and give the floor to someone else now. I gotta go, but hopefully I'll be able to stop back in later.

Prayers for all in need.

Evening ya'll

I acted on that de-hydration cue that I got from a while ago. Since I lasted posted, I've downed one bottle of powerade and hald a gallon of water. I'm definetly feeling a lot better. Stomach and legs don't hurt, the headache is almost gone, and I'm not trying to fall asleep at every turn. The last bit might be the powerade's doing, probably shouldn't drink any more so I can get some sleep for wrok tomorrow.

The new front tires for my car came in the mail today, so tomorrow after wrok I'm gonna head over to the "other" hobby shop (on base do-it yourself autoshop) to mount them to the front wheels of my car. The backs are still good, but the fronts got messed up from having too much negative chamber. The inside edge is showing the metal bands in some spots, but the outside edge looks pretty good.

Good morning all,

The village of Fox Creek located adjacent to the L.S.& W. east – west mainlines adverted total devastation last night as a 470 foot snake was captured just outside of town near Fox Creek Junction. An engineer hauling empty coal hoppers east noticed the snake not far from the right of way and claims the snake was longer than his 30 car train.  The snake escaped from my girlfriends “zoo” in the spare bedroom.  It seems the golden rat snake learned how to unclip the latches locking the top of its tank and went for a stroll.  When the snake was back in its tank it immediately found the latch and opened its tank.  We have now added several books to the top of its tank.

Thanks Rob, I added a little silver and china red last night to each of the scrap loads.  I plan on building a Jeep crate and make several duplicates for the port.  In Toledo Jeeps were crated and hauled by gondolas to the docks to be loaded onto ships for export to Canada and Europe.

Good morning.  Its going to be a hot day today.  The high will be about 85 degrees.

Well I got to go into work at 12:00pm.  I hate that shift.   Even thou its 12 - 6 still.........You can't do much in a few hours.

The wife is having a MRI done Friday.   As far as workers comp, well that's turned into a BIG head ache (no pun intended).

I did get a light hooked up to the KFC.  Maybe later this week I can get s shot up.  I did put up a shot of CSX coming by.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Robby, are you going to install a motor on the KFC bucket so it will spin?  I can remember when I was a kid all the buckets on the sign spun.  I hope the MRI sheds some light on the problem so it can be taken care of swiftly.

Good morning ...

No word yet from Todd.  Really concerned. I hope his grandson's surgery went fine. Still prayin'.

Lee ....... Interesting about the snake. How charming.

Rob ..... Hopefully, they can indetify your wife's problem and then take care of it.

On the layout, I'm pleased to say my upper level reverse loop is now installed as of last night. However, there is a lot more work to do.

 Mornin'!

Just a cup of coffee Zoe, dark roast in a R&GV RR Museum mug, please and thank you.

I will will be on wood detail all day today.  Have to transport a pickup load of cherry from a church in Webster, NY to the museum.  May also cut up a tree trunk they have sitting amongst the junk in the area we are cleaning up.  I'll see just how hot it is out there when I get there.

Expected high today is 83°F.  Bright sun outside all day.  Tomorrow it is going to get up to around 88°F so, I may spend tonight putting one of the 2 window air conditioners in.  Still going down into the low 60s at night so I will just use the fan fro a while longer in the bedroom.

Prayers for all in need!

Dehydration is a nasty thing, and can take some time to rehydrate unless you have IV's in your arm. Keep in mind that in addition to just getting more fluid in you {i.e. water only which has no nutrients} that your electrolytes will also most like be far off that allow your cells to add/waste nutrients/waste products. Gator/power and other hydration ade's do help replace some but there is also Pedialyte electrolyte drinkable solution. It is really designed to replace electrolytes for babies who spit up a lot or have the runs, but also works well for adults to replace electrolytes quickly. I use it often when I get dehydrated from medications or just sweating a lot. I get shaky, headaches, body aches, dry mouth and sometimes delerious when I get dehydrated. I keep Pedialyte on hand for those times.

Yeah hot here today to, about the same. Thank goodness someone invented A/c many years ago and is affordable now to those of us who need it!

I just had an MRI on my spine. That's what showed the degenerative disc disorder in my lumbar spine, and a few other nasty things like necrosis {dead tissue}. I see the neurosurgeon the 17th next month to see what the next step is. I hope it will do the same for your wife-show them what is really wrong and help them have a solution to help her! Work Comp always HAS been a PITA. Stick with it fill out all forms, do all that is asked and more and sign for all test results to be sent for their examination if necessary. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR/WITH WORK COMP> THEY OFTEN CONVENIENTLY "LOOSE,MISPLACE,OR "CAN'T FIND" YOUR PAPERWORK!!!!! KEEP YOUR COPIES SAFE! ANYTHING YOU MAIL IN MAIL CERTIFIED/RETURN RECIEPT REQUESTED TO PROVE YOU MAILED IT!!!  {I learned the HARD way when it came to my Social Security Disability paperwork!}  They may also have her go to THEIR own Dr.s who may try to minimize her condition. Get out gloves for both you and your wife as you may need to fight for what is rightfully hers! I wish you luck and prayers for her/you will be said over the prayer candle when it is lit tonight for those in need.

Yeah Robby, I also remember the spinning buckets on the Kentucky Fried Chicken Or Colonel Sanders Chicken {that's what they were called then "KFC" is a more modern nick name} stores. We ate there often when out shopping as we liked Kentucky Fried Chicken. That would be cool if you get the bucket to spin!!!   Of course I also remember when McDonald's stores had big yellow{"golden"} arches rising in the air on top of and implanted into the store!

Well, jeeze, what good are they???

I know you got a tank, but:

I found this...I think it may be what you need? {or did I enter wrong info for your van?} at Car Parts Wholesale:

http://cpwstore.carpartswholesale.com/catalog/?PN=9296&N=0&VN=4294967249+4294966732+4294966527+4294967247+4294966528&Nr=AND(universal:0)&sv=0

It IS $166.00 but if its what you properly need for your van and they even have the tank straps as well.... I found the same tank a few other places but at higher price of $184.00, of course. {Maybe you can work somehting out with your father?}

http://cpwstore.carpartswholesale.com/catalog/?PN=9296&N=0&VN=4294967249+4294966732+4294966527+4294967247+4294966528&Nr=AND(universal:0)&sv=0

It IS $166.00 but if its what you properly need for your van and they even have the tank straps as well.... I found the same tank a few other places but at higher price of $184.00, of course. {Maybe you can work somehting out with your father?}

That's the same tank I looked at on JC Whitney. It's two gallons too large and won't fit.

Strong Italian Roast coffee in a  SUNNY SOUTHERN  mug, please.

***Lee, WOW, a mega monster snake from right out of a SciFi flick. Hope not many of the wee little town folk suffered heart attacks or went into shock from the ordeal.

***Robby, sure hope they can pin-point the issue and then do something for your wife. Excellent CSX motive power pic. And lastly, make that bucket spin. Would be very cool indeed.

OK, WHERE (name of store) can I purchase a Nickel Silver plug/washer to burnish track with??? I have stopped at every automotive store and hardware store with zero luck. Please help!  Is this what I should use?:  http://www.etsy.com/listing/47351343/nickel-silver-1-inch-stamping-blanks

Turns out the 6x6 Ranger fuel pump IS working, so next I'll check all the hoses for splits/leaks. Hope it's a hose, or I will soon be running out of things to check.

Wife is getting anxious to find her little HO folks for the church scene and see it finished.

Afternoon folks!

I am done in and plumb tired out......  Zoe one of those RBF would sure hit the spot and tide me over to dinner.  I believe THAt would also help rehydrate me and provide all of those electricallitey things somebody said you need...... And I know it sure will taste a whole lot better than the bottled sweat they were suggesting as well!

Been hauling a couple of loads of wood from Henrieta, NY over to the Museum in Rush.  We filled my truck and then loaded up a van belonging to another member.  A little more than half of the wood from the tree is now at the museum with the first load the other guy hauled last week.  THAT and a very large tree taken down in 3 large pieces from the area where the new siding is going in should be more than enough to heat the station at Industry next winter.  I started to cut up the log out there, but the chain on the saw was a bit dull and was cutting slightly in circles.  I went to change over to my last sharp chain, and found it was badly rusted.  It is a chain without much left on the teeth anyway.  So THAT one will go in the trash and I'll get a new chain and have the others sharpened tomorrow.  Maybe this Saturday I will spend the day cutting the logs up for them.

Rob, IIRC you can use a plain brass washer to burnish the track.  THAT is what I used and it seemed to w*rk just fine.

When I got home this afternoon the house was almost 90°.  I put the Air conditioner into its window in the dining room?home office space and it sure feels good!  I usually keep it at 76°, but when you walk in to a dryer space after w*rking outside in the sun............Big Smile

Gotta go continue with THAT rehydrating thing.... Think I got down a couple quarts today.  The Thermo-Meter has been hovering around 84°F most of the afternoon..... And I'm not adjusted to w*rking out in the sun yet.

Later!
