 Good Afternoon,

Still kind of exhausted - even the slightest task tires me, so I keep a low profile at the moment.

Zoe, how about a RBF for me? Thank you.

Todd - it could very well be  "just" stress related. I guess I had more than just a fair share of that in recent months. Those blackouts worry me, though. I hardly dare to go out or drive a car. Makes shopping a little awkward, as Petra refuses to drive that old Merc. I hope to able to get back on my feet soon and have a somewhat "normal" life. Is Antony doing fine? My thoughts are with the little fella.

On those Google (or other) translators - I am always amused to see those translations. Individual words are OK, but sentences is a different story. German syntax differs very much from the English, so the results sometimes sound really funny. Add to that the many different meanings a word can have and you will never be able to catch the meaning of what was said.

Petra bought me a book . "Without Remorse", by Tom Clancy. The best is that it has nearly 1,000 pages, but unfortunately, it is in German and not in English.  I´ll be back on my sofa, reading the book for the rest of today (and tomorrow and the day after...)

Have a great day, all of you!

Last night was pretty busy. I had a fire dept meeting to go to, my first official meeting in almost a year. I had expected to be out of there in an hour but more discussions came up about future events and everything had to be hashed out to the very last detail. Very boring. I did however manage to squeeze in a few wise-cracks and some sound safety advice for the benefit of some of our newer fire fighters. The meeting started at 6:30 and ran to almost 9:30. One good thing was we had a good turnout, a lot of members showed up. It was agreed that we should begin concentrating on training again since we have only 8 members with any real experience. That will give me a chance to share some of the experience I have from my 16 years with the dept. There's a lot more to being a fire fighter than spraying water on a fire. Due to my disabilities I can't be a professional fire fighter but that doesn't mean I can't help to train professionals. I do have professional training. Between myself, the chief, the asst chief, a few of our guys who work for the Leesville fire dept as well as Sundown VFD, there's a wealth of experience and knowledge that can be passed on in the form of training missions, operations layout, relay and drop tank operations and water shuttle training. We also need to get more people trained on how to operate the pumping equipment. Being able to drive a fire truck is nice but what are you going to do once you get to the scene? If you have no training on the equipment you can't do much more than stand there with your thumb up your butt and a smile on you face. What good are you? Not much if you can't use the equipment you just brought. In a professional (paid) dept everybody has a job to do. On a volunteer dept you have to be able to do your job plus the job of anyone who hasn't shown up, so it's important that everyone know everyone else's jobs. There were many times I was on scene as the Incident Commander, the acting fire chief, pump operator, public relations as well as Safety Officer. Talk about being busy!

Ulrich- Anthony is doing well at this time thank you for asking. I sure do know that just putting words together doesn't make a sentance. My don't forget I speak english. Wait, so do you. You know what a whacked out language we haveLaugh. I don't mean to lighten the seriousness of your situation by inferring it's "just" stress. Stress is a very real and serious problem. Very serious problem. The worst part is nothing about the caused problems can be solved until the stress is removed and that many times is harder than if you just had a weak or even bad heart or some other "physical" problem. Take care and until things calm a bit, you are wise to limit the driving.

Jeff- Sounds like you're sticking with the FD! Great! There is so much you have to offer. Sorry if you had said you were staying recently. Last time I recall the subject came up, it sounded like you were gonna turn in the badge.  Had to do some skimming and may have missed it.

Got some odds and ends caught up here at the house, now to head to the restaurant. Maybe I'll leave my phone here and miss the "can you do this" calls. Think? Nah. Won't mattter.

Morni......  Ah, I mean, Hey it's lunch time already!

Zoe, first off get Ulrich another RBF I think he needs another to just relax.  Then get me a Reuben Sandwich and a unsweetened Ice Tea for lunch.  I'll go sit in the front booth so I can keep up with the switching going on in the yard.

Ulrich, good idea just to relax and take it easy for a while.  I think the stress factor may be a lot of what is causing your problems.

Thanks for the kind words about the Erie B3.  I put more photos up in the WPF thread.

I had to go over to Penn Yan To pick up the chainsaw this morning, hence being late getting in here today.  He sharpened 2 chains for me, put a new chain on the saw, and cleaned it up for me.  With tax, $29.11.....  Think THAT is why I have done my chain saw business there for the last 25 years!

Jeffrey, good to hear you got over to the Fire Dept. meeting.  See they still need you over there!  Hope you stay with them, your experience may save someones life without you even knowing it!

Todd, good to hear your grandson is healing well.  He sure has been through a lot.

Locally, last night's paper confirmed THAT a foot and a body (without the foot) were the remains of one of my students from way back when....  He disappeared last fall when the police were looking for him in connection to him "allegedly" stabbing his girlfriend 27 times.  She survived.....  A DNA match was made to prove the well decomposed body was the one they had been looking for all this time.  Police think he tried to jump the creek in a Glenn that actually goes under the middle of the city and drowned.  The creek starts up about 100 yards from my house and runs within 200 feet of my house, forms a deep glen before it goes underground near the business district.  The foot was found on the shore of Seneca Lake right behind a trendy Hotel and conference center here.  The rest of the body was found by a fisherman about a mile South of the city.  (Hey man I hooked a big one!!! WhistlingEvil)  This kid was one of the reasons I always check police beat to find out what my students have been up to.  Always felt a bit sorry for this kid.  No home life, abused, etc.........  Not much chance for him to be any different.

Hope you all have a good and safe day!

The chief and I talked it over about a week ago. It was decided that having me stay on has many more advantages than disadvantages. So what if I can't manhandle a hose anymore or bust my way in to a burning house. There's much more than that to being a fire fighter. I've done every job in the department and know how to use every piece of equipment with the exception of the very newest tools, and those won't take long to master. As was pointed out to me by several of the board members I'm one of the old guard (original members) and they want to keep as many as possible. I can still run the pumps, generators, do public relations and incident command plus many other things that don't require fast movements and heavy lifting, though sometimes I do whatever I can to avoid that heavy mass of paper work. That's why I didn't take the post of assistant chief. That requires being in too many places at one time! Way more than I want to tackle. I don't need to land in the hospital again! My primary physician looked at me kinda sideways when I told him I was remaining active with the dept. As I said, last night was my first official time back there in about a year so I was brought up to date on everything that's going on, met with the new members for their orientation and put out the proper safety related statements during the meeting. Things like don't speed, don't block access to the scene with your vehicle and other such things. The new guys have already been told that if they screw up safety wise I'm going to land on them like a ton of bricks, so they better mind their P's and Q's. And I wasn't the one who told them that. It was the assistant chief. A couple of things I can't abide are adrenaline junkies and people who claim to be afraid of nothing. The first thing I'll show them is the door! The last thing I need is some idiot who rushes in where angels fear to tread.

Well I made it to Friday and finally a day off.  Took advantage of it and slept in, didn't even hear my wife leave for work.

So Chloe, when you get freed up there, I would like a double Denver sandwich and a chocolate shake. That will hold me for lunch as well.

I have been busy lately not only with work but the Young Singles at Church are having a conference coming up and called on me to make some lawn games for them.  So I have produced a Gonzo Golf game and also a Bean Bag Toss game  (the young ladies are going to make the bean bags) So I have that done and all painted up and Varathaned. Should work well.  This has been keeping me out of trouble and away from the layout.

I have a six workshifts left and then we will drive to Spokane for my Son's Convocation, for his Batchelor's degree in Psychology. Then he has two more years as he has been accepted into Grad School for his Masters.  It will be a nice break for both of us.

Well I had better make good use of this day off, so will go for now.

My heart is heavy with all the health problems out there amoung our good friends. Keep the faith and know that we are all pulling for you. blessings to all.

Strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Jerry, even 1' of additional track is a good thing.

***Johnboy, that has got to be a rare sight. Nice spot & pic.

Got snapping turtle #2 this morning, and this was a larger one. Hmmm, wonder if there are more? Guess we'll find out.

My eldest brother had his 3rd heart attack and is in the hospital. That's all I know right now.

My wife is dizzy today. She's still going to go to work. Hope it's nothing serious.

Loggers started clearing our trees today. Already looks different. It's going to make some fine new pasture land for our mini cows & horses.

Ray ... That's quite a story. I guess what goes around comes around.

Jeff ... I was glad to learn you can still be involved with the fire department.

Jerry ... the SD 35 looks like a good one.

Todd . We've been praying for Anthony. I' m trying to remember if you posted his picture before.

Rob .. Lots of turtle soup available, right?

Here's a good video of the recent Nashville Flood.

Coffee refill and make it a strong one.

***Garry, funny pic. What's type of pistol does the guy with the backwards cap & sunglasses have? Looks like a bear gun.

Caught the guy in the harvester and got him to take a dozen more trees inside our current fence line, so wy wife can expand that orchard with more fruit trees. Also persuaded him to get the timber other side of our branch (deep ravine). Those trees need to go, too. We can never have to much pasture. Thunder Boomers breaking out all around us, but not here at the farm. So, the logging continues. Progress!

Healing thoughts to those in need, especially my brother, the O, HO, and currently Z scale modeller.

Todd   If you want to stop the translating thingy,go to the Google toolbar (if you have it),click on the arrow next to the word translate and then click on one of the options or the only one that comes up.  I forget if it is one or two because of the advanced years that are setting in.

Good afternooooooooooooooooooooooooon.

Welp, the Wife officially started her vacation today, guess Rerun and I have to figure out how to handle having her around 24/7 for the next 2 weeks! Shock Mischief

JEFF: Outstanding!!!!  'Tis good to have some "old heads," "the old guard," etc. around.  Glad you haven't hung up the helmet just yet. Have you ever read Harry Carter's commentaries on Firehouse.com? Harry often speaks of training and mentoring. I think you two would get along just fine.

ULRICH: Was wondering what had happened to you... I too am hoping it's "just" stress...in the manner which TODD explained.

I've got a busy weekend ahead: mow the weed patch yard tomorrow, cover a high school graduation on Sunday afternoon, and Memorial Day observance Monday morning. THAT wants the pics off both for layout on Tuesday. I'm to just "dump" them off the camera into their Mac. THAT could be...interesting. I don't use a Mac, I don't touch their Macs... could be interesting. I 'spose the worst I could do is meltdown the system....Whistling

Have a great, SAFE weekend everybody...

Duke, amen! My dad was in the Navy; he served in Uncle Sam's Mediterranean Yacht Club aboard the USS Nimitz (don't have italics or underlining right now). He's still alive though, but there are many who aren't. and I thank them sincerely for their service to this country. well, got a 99 on my final for world geo. had a 98, but I had changed one answer on the scantron and the machine counted it wrong but I had changed to the right answer, so got that point. now 6 exams left. In layout news, I'm thinking about replacing King Furniture with an industrial park. I'll be thinking of a proposed plan soon.

Good evening guys!

SOme fried chicken and cole slaw and a buttermilk biscuit please. At least thats what I had tonight courtesy of KFC.

Steamtown said earlier this month they would have steam up and running "at the end of May". WEll, I guess this would qualify as the "end of May" and with Memorial day the unofficial start of the summer, I imagine they will have steam going tomorrow. I forgot to call them to inquire after that before we left to go out for the day. We are thinking of going down tomorrow! TO watch them play with the steamer! Yee Hah!

We also have the option of going to Corning {NY} which is having a big downtown Glass festival, with glass blowing and such and stuff and more, oh my!. SO we may go to that instead.

We may also just stay home and have a "nothing day" where we don't do much but watch tv, nap, and play on the 'puter.

And there is the possibility that my other half could get called into work and we sure can use the extra money.

Good news finally on the 98 Gr Caravan front! WE took it to the dealer because we were told the computer was failing. WEll, the dealer got a look at it today and found a loose wire in the engine wiring harness which they resecured and put a strap tie on to hold it in place so it will NOT come loose again they promised. Only $65 for diagnostic and solving the problem {or so they say}. That alone saved us $800-$1000 easily! Now it desperately needs struts...so the $1000 that could have gone to the computer will now go to new struts and towers. Then later shocks, they need to be replaced too, but not nearly as bad as the struts. The struts are failing badly so they need to be replaced first. Lets hope the dealer is right! WE hope to get another 5-6 years out of it before we replace it, or run it into the ground, whichever comes first. We have practically rebuilt the darn thing already so now IT kinda owes US.

Hope everyone stays safe this weekend, regardless of what you all are doing. Safety first goes a long way!

Jeffrey, recently for the last year there has been a big arguement and court battle in the nearby small town I grew up in {pop about 5-6K people}. It is a volunteer fire dept. There are some 2000 or so "member volunteers" who the town/county is paying for the equipment, training, updated trainig, insurance to have them available for on duty etc. A lot of costs to keep many on who are really inactive volunteers who are similar to your position. They are too old, or have mediocal problems and can;t really fight fires anymore so the town wanted to discontinue them and take them off the volunteer lists. The town succeeded but the volunteers {some who are in their 70-80's} took it ot court and won. There is still a battle over paying for the equipment and insurance the town is carrying for them, wheteher they have "60 years of service" or not. If they can no longer do the job, then they should be off the current volunteer roster. Sounds like you have important other things you can you do that would benefit your being kept on.

A nod to the servicemen past, present and future.

Seems like a lot of people here, for varying reasons, need special prayers with the prayer candle. The prayer candle is lit tonight for those in need.

well, guys, have a great evening.

Good Evening All,

Two days in a row with nice weather - don't know if I can stand much more!

Finishing up in the shop and then some time on the Focus refitting the now powder coated rear subframe and suspension. Tomorrow I'm supposed to reassemble the Aspire so we have another runner to use. We'll see how that goes. Spent the day on the 280Zx twin turbo putting lines together and fitting the new components Kinsler provided for the fuel injection. Incredibly complicated engine and the only electronic stuff is the ignition and the fuel pumps. Truely old school.

Since it's of interest at least this weekend, my crew chief when we built the car in the 80's was a man named Gene Crowe. He is really the reason I've kept at this for so long and a better teacher you couldn't find. He was an Army Veteran and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge - spent the rest of the war as a POW but was never much of one to talk about it. I wouldn't have known as much as i did except we were talking about SAR missions in N.Viet Nam and my dads' experiences after he got shot down and he just blurted it out. I  think most of the folks who really lived through it don't want to recall it. I had it easy by comparison sailing back and forth far from shore and combat. At any rate this is the weekend we remember those who suffered and those who gave all for our freedom today.

galaxy, glad to hear abt the dodge! Part of the plan for the King Furniture redo involves ripping up part of the forest, which I did, and now I've flushed out the lake corner forest and just completed the scene except for gluing down the scenery and superdetailing.  Evenin' folks!

Flo, decafe, be in back booth.......

Aye,yi, yi, yi, yi!  I went out to eat with my sister tonight.  She said she was having withdrawal symptoms from her favorite Mexican restaurant, so I said sure I'll go out to eat with you.  Well, she was in a major ADHD type mood.  This consists of being all touchy feeley, poke, poke, pat, pat, poke, poke, all evening long.  The conversation was something like, "well enough about me, what do you think about me???"  Poke, poke, pat, pat........  The only good thing is she knew a whole lot of people who were trying to enjoy their meal, so she went over to visit their table, touchy feeley, poke, poke, pat, pat....  I actually did get to complete one sentence during the dinner.  She asked me how my food was, and I said, "It's good."  I got a special rib eye thing from a burro named Raphael.....  In fact it was called Rib Eye Burro Raphael I think ( I don't usually get to know the first name of whatever it is they are serving).  They chopped it up and stuck it some pancake thingy.  (Can you tell I'm not really big on Mexican food?)  I made them remove all the Salsa and tomaters that they cover everything with so i could gag it down.  Did have a nice glass of Finger Lakes Reisling to wash it down with.  My sister may have sold a painting (the restaurant has several of her paintings of Mexican scenes on the walls), and she talked to several parents of kids she has had in her summer art classes..... I will say this, the restaurant was struggling a couple years ago when they first opened, and now they have the place sold out every weekend.  If you like Mexican, this is thee place to be in these parts.  The guy is doing a great job and I actually do enjoy the place) even though I'm not a big fan of the food.

So I'm gonna just sit in the back and turn off the hearing aids and tune out.

Rob asked: "***Garry, funny pic. What's type of pistol does the guy with the backwards cap & sunglasses have? Looks like a bear gun. " .... I'm not sure, but I'm missing my old Lone Ranger cap pistol. Do you think it shoots silver bullets?

Robby ... glad the MRI went well.

After running a few trains, I see I need to correct a couple of small problems with my newly laid track, but it's not too bad.  Also, Gus helped with installing some decoders. Gradually shifting to DCC.

Evening all.  Just stopping in fora RBF and a little relaxation.  I'm on my FIL's desktop right now currently waiting for my wife to get here so that she can pick me up (rode to work this evening and its threatening rain, so I really don't exactly want to ride home in the wet stuff), and we go home.

Jeff, glad that you are staying onboard with the VFD, I've got to get over to my local VFD and talk to the chief and assistant chief about getting FF1 training down so that I can help them when the need comes and the call is made.

Not much happening tonight, will be taking a shower and heading to bed as soon as Amy comes to get me and take me home.  Tomorrow brings turning a PT Cruiser that I've been slowly working on for over a month, maybe now its two months (timing belt broke, been petering around on getting it fixed, namely because the customer told me it was no rush) to a customer and getting paid on that.  Afterwards it'll be off to my "real" job.  Closing tomorrow night, which isn't bad, but definitely not always high on the list of "things I wanna do".  Oh well, its 11pm here in Bama and the wife still hasn't come to retrieve me, so it might be time to call her and as what's happening.

Goodnight all, prayers to those in need.  And let us not forget what this weekend really means.  Thank the soliders, sailors, marines, and airmen whom gave their all, and to those who gave it all.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the men and women who put on and have put on the Class A's and the Utility uniforms day in and day out.

Evening all. I should be in bed by now. Just stopped in because I saw earlier were someone needed to be added to the prayer list

Tomorrows plans have changed, the realtor is showing Mom's house at 9 am and we have to do some cleaning. Of course with the torrential downpours, I have to suck the basement dry. That has reared it's ugly head. While Brenda was there tonight, another realtor showed up and showed the house. That is the first. Tomorrow will be the second. Not bad for today being the second day it was listed. (Don't tell anyone, but today I did stop in at Toddland (of which I'm king) and spread some plaster stuff for the main streets in Gold CreekWhistlingBig Smile)

Garry- LOVE the picture!!!!! LOVE it, LOVE it, LOOOOOOVE it!!!!!

SOMEBODY's relation isn't doing well and I can't find who it is now. I saw it earlier on a quick peak in the window, but now I can't find it. Rest assured the way I'll put it in my prayers, the big guy upstairs will know who I mean. Some of you are always there but there is a new one and it bugs me I can't find the post again.

Rob- How's the wife's dizzy spell.

Duke- Thanks. It was the only option that showed up by the way. It was really starting to annoy me!

G- I know what you mean with the old fire dogs. We have and had a few that just wouldn't hang it up. Not much is spent on or because of them here to my understanding, but like you sid, Jeff's case is different. He is actually providing a valuable service to th eFD. Some just wanna say they're a fireman.

Robby- Glad the MRI was good.

Well I skimmed again, so I'll catch up sometime tomorrow. Doubt if I'll even stop in for breakfast the way it's sounding.

Prayers for those in neeed. Even if I can't remember exactly who they are. But, He knows.

 Good Morning,

well, as Todd is just heading towards Zzz, I am getting up and start a  new day. Have a good night, Todd!

For obvious reasons, we do not have a "Memorial Day" in Germany, but maybe have one in the future. In the last 100 years, German soldiers were the ones your people had to fight twice.  Only recently, we have become brothers in arms, fighting the Taliban side by side.

I take Memorial Day as an occasion to pay my respect to the 43 German servicemen, who lost their lives  in Afghanistan, and to their families.

I pay my respect to all people, wherever they are in the world, who risk their lives to protect freedom and liberty, and to all who lost their lives in the process of doing so.

My family has not much of a military tradition. Both my grandfathers served during WW I, but not in WW II any more. My father was too young at the outbreak of WW II and too ill at the end of it. My brother did his term in the German Air Force as a radar operator and I have been a civilian all my life, although I once had volunteered for the Navy. They did not want me Whistling

Chloe, just a coffee and a breakfast bagel for me, please n´ thanks.

The sun´s out here in northern Germany, but it is way too cold for the season. In all meanings, May has not been a good month.

 Have a good weekend!

Ulrich, Gutten Tag, Wie Gates?

Sorry I don't want to try to spell the rest of my Deutch, too long since I was half decent at speaking it.  I'm about ready to hit the hay Zzz here on the Left Coast of Canada but wanted to check in here for a bit first.

Dan - it always amazes me, how many of you people know German. For me, it is one of the craziest languages in the world. Even it being my native tongue, I had such a hard time to "learn" it again, when I came back from my time as an exchange student in Washington State. After more than 18 months in the US, I had lost so much of it! My wife´s uncle emigrated to the US over 50 years ago and his German has a very pronounced American accent now Smile

I don´t have much of a chance to actually speak English now. Our next door neighbor is a woman from Scotland (from the lovely town of Ayr), so now and then I can mix a few English words into our conversation - that´s about all! I guess, my English sounds funny to your ears - it is outdated, lacking all those  fashionable "in" words the younger generation uses. In my time, words like "far out" and "groovy" were commonly used - far out today, probably. I had the chance to visit the US (and BC) in 1978 and on two business trips to New York in 1992. I worked in London for about half a year in 1991. That was the last time I really had to speak the language. People say that I have a "25 miles west of London" accent, quite a change from the lingo I had spoken while attending Bainbridge Island High School Big Smile

Jeff - I am glad you can stay with your FD. It has been a part of your life, and giving it up is something like giving up a part of life. Hope, your van will be on the road soon!

Ray - I was able to follow op on previous posts. Who is that fellow with the nice and friendly smile next to Arun Gandhi? How´s Olivia doing? Sorry to read about that student of yours - some people seem to collect just all the bad luck there is in life. May he rest in peace now.

Sawyer - saw those recent pics of your layout - that´s a big Thumbs Up.

Bama - good to read about you again - I was getting worried already!

Any news about Sam and his new job?

Two years ago, I started coaching a fellow model railroader in Switzerland. He had been working on his layout for some 7 years, only to find out, that he would never be able to run a train without problems. His layout had two helices with a too tight radius, causing a derailment any time he ran a train. He dismantled the layout in disgust and was just about to chuck the hobby, when we met in Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. Together, we developed a modular layout, based on his favorite route, the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway. His layout is an exact copy of the Blausee-Mitholz station, with all the landmark features around it. He does such a fantastic job in capturing all those little details, that I sometimes have a hard time to find out whether the pictures show his model our reality. It is great fun to watch his skills develop. He has outgrown his teacher already! You can see some of his recent work here and here.

As John would say - TTFN! The weekend´s HD list is waiting for me!
