RAY...Nice to finally meet you yesterday at our little club show..it's not huge...but the profits pay the rent and utilities for the year which is nice...plus a little extra for materials/supplies. I spent some money yesterday with the vendors. Nice and cloudy today here in Syracuse N.Y...snow arriving later today with 4 inches by suppertime...with maybe more over the next day or so. I am glad you ride didn't leave you there Ray...I would have hated to drive you home...I have been known to get lost in wine country and not come back!!....Good day...Tim

A true friend will not bail you out of jail...he will be sitting next to you saying "that was friggin awesome dude!" Tim...Modeling the NYC...is there any other?

Well here's some shots of the hopper and the boxcar.  I've worked on them for HOURS!!  Now I hope they can sell!!

Here's a few of the hopper.  Its been faded, rusted, underneath done, air hoses, cut levers, etc...

Now here is some of the boxcar.  I had to buy two of these.  I've been wanting one.   I did add a before shot, but the picture of the boxcar has been faded (thats my car).  I haven't even touched it yet.  Same thing.  Faded, rust, air hises, underneath weathered, etc.....

Afternoon folks!

Zoe I'll have the Reuben Sandwich with chips and a big dill pickle along with a Dr. Pepper for lunch.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

Tim, we spent an hour or so doing some railfanning in the area after e left the show yesterday.  Found the CSX yard amongst some other stuff.  Fun day!

I am glad you ride didn't leave you there Ray...I would have hated to drive you home...I have been known to get lost in wine country and not come back!!....

By the time we would have gotten here, all the winery tours would have been done for the day......  Sometime when you are down in this area we can check out some of the railfan stuff here in Geneva and of course a few of the wineries THAT are right near the FGLK tracks.......Wink

Got lucky today again.  The jury call is already on line for Tuesday.  Numbers 1 - 50 have to report to City Court here in Geneva tomorrow.  Since I have a number in the 60s, I won't have to report........yet.  If there any more trials on the schedule, my number will get called. Sad

Have a bit more I can get done on the engine house before the windows and doors arrive, so I'll be playing miniature carpenter for part of today.

Another bowl of Chicken Gumbo, and a coffee in a small BURLINGTON NORTHERN mug, please.

***Keith, nice catch there. I like the ready-to-go parking lot. Wish I had your wife's eye sight. Wow!

***Jerry, good haul. If the drives on my old puter hadn't quit working, I would copy my own bluegrass CD's and send you some.

***Robby, more excellent weathering there, as we've come to expect from you.

Heard back from Walthers regarding my (N) Heritage Berkshire and they would charge $60. That's half the cost of a new one (if you shop around), so I think I'll either try selling it off on the-bay to recoup some portion of the purchase price or burn it up on my layout. I know it is as simple as tweaking a side rod or two, but I just can't see well enough to do it. Arguably one of the best looking steamers in N scale ever produced, but what a design flaw. Gurrrr! Perhaps steam locos are meant to be on display and diesels are for running.Mischief

Good morning..Its cloudy and 32 here..I'll have coffee and toast please..I'm still tired but happy  My son took me to train show at Mall in Mattoon Illinois Saturday...They had some great N scale layouts..I got alot of good info from Dick Strous with the Dayton N track club..they have a outstanding layout and are friendly folks...Ipicked up some neet goodies..

and the good part was my Son footed the bill..even took me to my favorite place for lunch Sonic hadn't been there for 2 or 3 years..and to top it off he gave me a CD boom box and a blue grass CD so I can listen to the tunes while I work on the railroad..You all have a good one...Jerry

Will that be a Sam's diner when you get done?  Looks like a nice kit.

NOPE, gonna be "Elliott's Trackside Diner" right there on my layout!!! Gotta be!  All I could think of when I saw the kit sitting on the vendors table was "Hey, THAT would look great across the street from Warminster Station, or even right down the tracks from New Hope Station!"  We shall see!

"Perhaps, it is better that people can't see in the diner because they might see what happens in the corner booth." - Garry  ShockShock ROFLMAO!!!!

Jerry- That was excellent of your son!  Glad you had a good weekend!  And, I second Keiths sentiments, I'd like to know what you got too!

Robby- AWESOME weathering again AS USUAL for you!  I've saved the pics you posted... Too good looking to pass up, also will be my inspiration when I start weathering my fleet...

I am loving this weather though. 59 right now!

Well, went to the downtown DMV to take my permit test today, but it was PACKED! so I'll be going saturday.

Did do some more picture taking of hoppers. nothing different though except for this green character; what in the world is it doing in aiken and ON THAT SPUR?! I thought it was abandoned. guess it ain't.

And here's a nice shot:

You know---this Elliott's Diner could be a sort of franchise kind of thing. IIRC there was sometime ago a series of articles(?) in MR that discussed a bunch of MRR's who had a diner called Polar Bear Diner(only stipulation being that a statue of a Polar Bear was to be used as the logo.

Anyone else wanna throw one together? I'm thinking of one for the Exceda Wye Jtn----SmileApprove

Speaking of which

Had an all day snow event that left us with about 8" of wet sloppy snow/slush/gunk to contend with. Audrey and I took advantage of this and used it for a snowball fight and being silly in our backyardSmile--great packing snow for snowballs but not so useful otherwiseWhistling

I'm spending a bit of time tonight doing up a scene that I had been sort of messing around with for Thompson Mills--that being the branchline going through a block so that it is being run through a back alley. I'm scratchbuilding a bunch of small houses to face away from the track--backyards facing the track--Whistling You see I tend to rummage through my ideas a bit here. Whistling I'm sort of in the brainstorming mode here as that corner of the layout is so in need of something to pick it upBanged Head

Chloe, I'll have a regular sized--no, not BARRY sized!Grumpy--REGULAR sized cheeseburger and fries with an RBF please---I'll be over at the RC for nowBig Smile

Sheeesh---some peoples ki-----no----I was not referring to you Chloe--dear-----slap slap slap ow! ow! ow! ow! ---uncle!! uncle!! uncle!!----I'll behave---yes ma'am no ma'am------oopsBlack Eye

You know, we need to work on what the sign would look like!?  I'm kinda leaning toward the "Elliott's Trackside" portion being on a diagonal, while the "DINER" portion is horizontal.  I've been trying to find someone who does custom "lighted" bilboards.  If we have a bunch of people doing the same sign, we might be able to find someone to make it for us!  Does anyone know of someone that can do this kind of work?

Well, I am exhausted, have to sign-up at 4:34am Mon- Wed, have Thursday and Friday off, then sign-up at 5:19am on Saturday and Sunday.  I had a good day today, trainhandling is getting a little easier.  I am starting to remember the spots and the braking points for each station, so THAT is definitely a plus!

Well, I better catch some shut-eye before I have to be up-and-at-'em in the morning!

LONGEST DAY OF MY FREAKIN' LIFE!!!!

Woke up this morning to the the wife with stabbing sharp stomach pains!  By sunup we're in the emergency room at the hospital where the wife had her gastric bypass surgery 5 weeks ago.  By noon she's headed to emergency surgery.  Seems a part of the stomach muscle wall had ruptured and a section of her intestine had pushed through.  It was now cut off from blood flow and was in trouble.

Surgery lasted about 30 minutes and all is good now.  She's doing a lot better now.  They did it as an out-patient deal, so she's home now......12 hours after this all started.  They said she could still go on her trip too!

Man, what they can do these days is amazing!

I've been using this slow day to get some more work done on the two IHC boxcar bodies. I removed the roofwalks, ground off the lip around the mounting holes and filled the holes in with modeling clay. I went over the roofs of the cars with a black/gray latex then rubbed on a rust colored latex wash. One roof tells the story for both.

Evening Ya'll

PC, good to see everything is better. I do have to ask, could that have been caused by a slip-up in the first surgery? I don't think having an intestine get caught in the stomach muscle is normally (what is normal anyways) even possible, but I'm no doctor.

Robb, those look good

Sawyer, I wonder about that green character myself... The plain 90's scheme isn't my favorite, but at least it's BN.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jeff.......Good looking roof.  Seems like you've been doing a lot of weathering lately.

Good evening .... I'll have a BLT on wheat toast and a VMMS (Vanilla Malted Milk Shake).

PC... sorry to hear about the long day. Praying for Mrs. PC's full recovery. ... PC I've been wondering where you have been, and I hope everything else is OK.

Jeff..  I guess you are feeling better today after seeing your work on the freight cars, and that's good.

Jerry ... You got some neat stuff at the train show.

Rob ... The rods on an HO steamer are fragile enough. N scale is too small. That said, I happen to be near sighted which is helpful in this hobby.

Robby ... I like the GTW hopper.

The diner seems to have quieted down. Maybe after Barry's last belch, it was enough send all the animals way. I suppose it's good we just had possoms, raccoons and foxes. A skunk would have been disasterous.

I see a headlight approaching, and I think it is the evening hotshot freight train. Time for train watching.

Yeah, I've been pretty busy lately.  I keep meaning to stop by, but somehow it just doesn't happen.  I did get a little layout time the other day though!  Unfortunately, that's all the time I've had for it lately too.

Good *grumble grumble grumble* evening... Chloe? Double cheeseburger basket, with fries and a Coke please 'n thank-you...yep, at the RC. Gee, seems to be a LOT less critters around here today... I'm sure a-wondering what ever happened to THAT raccoon...I'm suspecting the fox of having committed a dasterdly deed, leading to the untimely demise of THAT raccoon...

Welp... woke up in a bad mood...not sure why...hasn't improved yet. In fact, I THOUGHT I was going to shoot a boys' sub-state basketball game. Get to the site, doors are locked, no signs of life. 30 minutes to game time...still locked up tight, no signs of life. I'm wondering if Fairfield, the opposing team,(southern Iowa) didn't cancel school today due to last night's "blizzard." We didn't have much of anything in Clarence, I-80 was a disaster area around Iowa City...guess it was "worse" to the south. So...1/4 tank of gas burned for nothing. Angry I even checked a few different websites before heading out...didn't see anything to indicate a postponement. On the way home, I'm dialing around on the radio, and find THAT Iowa City West, the "other" North Liberty high school, is in a sub-state against Cedar Rapids Xavier (the combination of my high school with the other CR catholic high). Banged Head Of course, I find the game about the time I'm 15 miles from home...

*sigh*

And so it goes...

Could be worse, which reminds me, hey PC: GLAD Mrs. PC is OK and THAT it was a relatively quick fix!!! So...on a much, much lighter note, was THAT considered a "repair" under warrenty???Smile,Wink, & Grin Seriously, for such a scare, very glad it had a good outcome!

ROBBY P: 10-4 on the Veeeeee-Dubs! THANKS! I think Loving Wife has forgotten all about them, so she'll be surprised when they show up. Then again, I might just "deploy them" and see how long it takes her to realize they've arrived...Mischief Was it you (or Sam?) who got a Mini Cooper? THAT's Loving Wife's other collecting frenzy... got her a new Matchbox issue for V-Day. AWESOME effort, by the way, on THAT GT hopper!!!!Bow I think THAT's one of your best ever!

SAWYER: On THAT BN hopper...might be in dry bulk fertilizer service...any agricultural lime/ag fertilizer places in the area? Or...a feed mill? Grain processor?

VINCENT: I don't know... the 90s simplified BN scheme is OK in my book, I do prefer the huge BN logo though. I agree, the initial-only fad just doesn't look THAT good, regardless of which RR did it. I've got THAT fuel tanker article located, sitting on the scanner. Now, I just have to find the directions on how to run the bracken-fracken thing (Loving Wife wrote 'em out for me...). Then, I gotta get the files to her to .pdf 'em. OR, I could just send 'em as a .jpg... your call.

JERRY: Pretty cool what your son did... sounds like a good man.Thumbs Up

GARRY: Thanks for revealing your secrets: raising the scenery to meet the backdrop, forced perspective, etc.  As a custom locomotive builder/painter once told me, some guys are "tools" when it comes to sharing their techniques. Thankfully, you (and the custom guy)...aren't!!Thumbs Up

RAY: How much board-by-board are you doing on THAT engine house????

JEFF: THAT boxcar roof looks good...real good.

'Spose I'd best yield the floor...see whoelse makes it in this evening...

Chris, Yeah the initial-only fad isn't that great looking to me either. Guess it saves the RR money though.PDF would probably better. It's a little bit friendlier than a jpg for that kind of thing.

Good evening Diners:

The Power of Model Railroaders! I see from the financial news this morning that Lowes 4th Quarter 2009 profits were up 27% on increased sales...and cost cuts. Whistling

Garry: That outhouse while functional, lacks perhaps the finer touch. I was sent a bunch of Art Outhouse photos today, so here's  the first. Sorry no Train themed ones in there. On the backdrop and roads thing, It's also possible to continue the idea of a road a fair way into a backdrop if the country is forested and has straight roads. This is from my Alberta layout, the road went across an open access hatch which I never got around to trying to hide, so the effect isn't all it could be, but you can see the cut in the trees goes on for a ways beyond the hatch. BTW, the little green steamer with the black and yellow oil tank cars is a HOn30 on the narrow gauge section of that layout. I scratched the cars from old blood sugar measuring stick bottles.Big Smile

Ulrich:

There seem to be openings in teaching, also for people who do not have a teaching background. They will get my resume and application by tomorrow!
An interesting development, and one that likely carries benefits. How's your patience? You'll know if it's a "fit" as you go through the interview process probably. BTW, have "They" made any more noises about Petra - what was it?- driving a fork lift?

Rob: On the N scale knuckle compatibility issue, I realized as I dealt with a Kato SD40-2 this evening that I had miss-spoken. I do have some Kato locos with their own brand of KCs. These tend to be more difficult to couple with either Micro-trains or Atlas than you would expect from such a fine-in-other-departments manufacturer.

Jerry: Nice haul. Enjoy the re-railing ramp. I find mine very useful - but only on straight track. Of course Mr. Murphy sees to it that I need it most where there are curves!Banged Head Is that a Laser cut wood kit depot in back there? The depressed center flat car is neat - transformer load and all Thumbs Up I kept trying to move things out the way with my mouse so I could see more stuff Smile,Wink, & Grin

Had an email from Paul yesterday - he says Hi! - just hasn't got in very much lately.

RobbyP: again, thanks for posting the weathering pics - and again Bow, an inspiration as always! BTW, do you, or does anyone, know the name of the Wet Noodle font CN uses for itself and its VT / GT offspring?  I'm wondering now, seeing the boxcar if my little Harbour Grace Port Authority could pretend to be big enough to own a liveried box as well as its only loco.Mischief

Jeff: Nice rust! I like the flaked away to black underneath effect. .Seeing your trucks, and looking at the bearings, those are 100 ton Roller type right? Is it that the older style, where the bearing has a hatch for lubrication, is a Friction bearing? And Rob was that what you were getting at - which type to put on which model? I was thinking more of the actual functioning of the model truck itself - which as far as I can figure are all needle type friction bearings; at any rate in the smaller scales.

PC: Ouch! Our prayers for her very speedy recovery, and that everything stays put!Angel

Chuck: What part of Trust don't they understand, I wonder? I would have thought the terms of that set up would make everything clear. My 2 cents But if your lot are anything like our lot, it's "you're guilty until proven innocent - and our first approach is an accusation of fraud and concealment!Pirate

Time to head for bed - earlier start tomorrow. So I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Evenin' folks!

Just a cup of decafe, Flo.

Chris, I'll be doing quite a bit of board by board construction with this project, but a lot of the walls, etc will be cut from preformed sheets.....  The floor, main doors, and roof shingles will all be scratched board by board.  Adds to the fun of the project and hopefully will look a whole lot better.  This one will be the first of 2 I will make of this backwoods engine house.  The second, I will have a better idea of what will w*rk and will be used for contest.

Those of you that are fed up with the sn*w this winter.  Here is how you handle real sn*w!  Especially when your Big bucket is stuck.  Just get out the Caterpillar D7.  It will do the job and rescue the bucket loader as well!  From the R&GV Museum collection: http://www.youtube.com/rgvrrm#p/u/1/FrY_8uvG-xo

Hope you all have a good night!

Bowl of raw mixed nuts, please.

***Philip, your wife sure deserves a break. Sending healing thoughts her way.

***Der, Kato is my favorite manufacture, although Atlas still owns my childhood heart. Have never had a single problem with any Kato loco yet, that I can remember anyway.

You have far more patience than I...and far more craftsmanship. Bow

A big THANK YOU for posting THAT video! I could just about smell the diesel exhaust...LOVE the sound of THAT Cat workin'. Reminded me of my Grandpa feathering the throttle to make his Farmall 706 "talk." I especially liked the shot at the end. May he RIP, I'll bet he was a helluva man.

Anybody know where I can pick up a CAT D-7??? No, not a 1/87th scale replica...I want a REAL ONE! Heck, I betcha I could plow the streets of Clarence a heckuvalot better with THAT than what the city does with their half-azzzzzzzzzed pickup and blade!!!!!Disapprove

Good morning. It's 40 and cloudy. the high will be 48 and there's a 60% chance of rain.

I'll be going to town this morning for my weekly visit with the foot doc so he can poke and prod me some more. Afterward I'll likely be working on the ends of the boxcars. I've already done one this morning with a combination of a wash and a dry-brush effect with latex rust paint. Great thing about the stuff is if I make a mistake I can just wipe it off with a damp paper towel.

Good morning all,

Freezing rain, still.  Funny the farther south you travel the worse it gets.  I wasn’t as productive as Jeff, but I did paint my Jordon Spreader MOW Grey last night.  I hear the upper Great Lakes are thawing a little early this year, work might pick up here in a couple of days.
