Got home from Syracuse about an hour ago.  Then got to show the layout to the guys I rode up there with.  One is a MMR from the Hammondsport area and the other is a guy who moved into the Bath, NY area last year.  Both are members of my NMRA Division.  We all had a great day!

The Vendor area was fairly small, but had some very good local people manning tables from the area.  There was also the guys who wanted $125 for a Tyco 0-6-0 steamer.......... One that has seen better days as well.  I thought about asking him if I had to pay him the $125 or if he was going to pay me to take it off his hands......  I kept my mouth shut.  Met Tim (Fireman 216) and had a good chat with him.  He was right at the entrance booth w*rking when I got there.  Good to meet you Tim!

The club layout is very nicely done and I'm sure provides some great operations night for the group!  Too bad I don't live closer by.  Even the LEGOS Layout was fun!  My granddaughter would have loved it!  After we attended the CNY, NMRA Division meeting, we took a spin around Syracuse to do some rail fanning.  Drove down alongside the CSX Yard in Syracuse.  We could see containers being loaded on cars in the yard.

Good Evening All,

    I'll have the double deck swiss mushroom and bacon burger medium rare on a sesame seed bun lightly toasted please.  Yes tomato lettuce and some Guldens  mustard with that please. Seasoned curly blue fries with that? Sure. and of course a Vanilla milkshake with it. No I'll just have it back here next to the passed out fox. Man that dude can sleep. No I haven't seen the raccoons. Are they still AWOL? Hmmmmm.

   Long day at the house today with chores and whatnot. I've had this green foam spray kit for a month or so now but it needs 60f to use and it's been too cold in the basement. With things a bit warmer and the sn*w going I was hoping this would be the weekend. It got up to 55 so I decided to go for it hoping the specs had a bit of wiggle room. It went all right and with maybe a little touch up and some details around the windows I can start on the walls and hooking up electrics for the CFO's exercise room. I also have a better idea on the dimensions of the new empire as well - an ell shape about 7' x 12' on one leg and 8' x 24' for the other. I'll need to allow for access and a hobby bench, etc, but it's more room than I had before so I'm happy either way.n Of course I'll need to start over on the layout design but still hope to keep the loop yard and two levels with a city scene. With any luck I can recycle some of the old layout I have hanging from the rafters in the shed. The CFO is happier this way as well as the wood shop will be away from the rest of the house so noise and smells won't be an issue. All I need to do now is finish the rest of the job lists and I'm good to go hopefully by late spring or early summer.

Flip - what cars are you looking for? We get Bevbel and others through the museum all the time and we usually surplus them off. Two years ago we had nearly 40 kits donated (all custom paint blue box) and we took them to Springfield and got rid of them.

I'm sore and have a bit of a headache so I'm just going to chill for a bit right here.  J.R.

JR ... That's good news that your new empire will soon have its space set aside. I still miss your pix of the previous empire. Downtown scenes were impressive!

Joe ... I did not paint all of the backdrops. They are a collage of pictures. I had to paint parts of it, however.

Todd ... One more thing. When I install the backdrops, I have the horizon up above the track level by maybe two or more inches. Then I slope the scenery up to the backdrop not just with roads but other places, too.

 I had so many plans for working on some freight cars today but I was down and out before 11 am. I had an unexpected blood sugar crash that sent my level down to 46 even though I had a descent breakfast earlier. At that point I'm virtually colorblind. Things didn't improve much after eating and I was really tired as well. I intended to get a 1 hour nap. That turned into 4 hours, but I felt much better. Still haven't touched the cars though. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm looking to start replacing some old trucks with rapido couplers with some new Atlas Accumates or Micro-trains.  Nearly all my (N scale) track is Kato Unitrack. Questions:

1) Should I get friction or roller trucks?

2) Which wheel size do I to go with, or is this dependant on the actual car I'm replacing trucks on? 

3) And what about the various coupler extension sizes? 

4) Will all the various types of knuckle couplers work ok together? 

Suggestions will be much appreciated.

One of them is actually running very well now, but the other..........  No dice.  Derails every time it goes through a curve.  I have a new set of trucks ordered for it which may help.  They are 3 axle trucks and bind in the curves and pull very hard.  my little loco can pull them up a 2% grade with no problem but get into a 24" radius curve and they just stop the loco (Spins its wheels).  They are probably binding on something underneath.  I am most likely going to get some of the Rivarossi 60 fotters and run those.

  I checked the gauge on the front truck of my P42 loco a couple of days ago, because it wouldn't take a certain curve that every other loco or car has no bother negotiating. Sure enough, the lead wheel set was just a hair (OK, maybe 2 hairs) tight. Adjusted to true, Pas de problem. So, that's a thought. Also, is it possible to "blind" the centre wheel set on each truck on the offending car? After all, isn't that done for larger steam locos in order to help them around tight curves? (EDIT: I see that's already been suggested.)

Ulrich: I was intrigued by the Dinas Mawddyw logo on your track plan, so I Googled it.. It's a village in Snowdonia, Wales. Oh, I see that you've switched names

from Wikipedia , Welsh pronunciation is  ɡlɨn'dəvrdʊɨ which really helps, Ja? Anyway, the first part is roughly GLIN, and the last, as far as I can figure, DIF-DRWEE (without drawing out the two "ee"s at the end. It's sometimes one word run together, sometimes split, and who knows why! For the station there, see Right hand photo, second row down.

That 0-6-0 Pannier Tank I'm quite familiar with. It was often used to head the train that took us from Paddington to school at Oxford in the 50s, before amalgamation and the birth of British Railways, in whose livery your example is dressed!. ( because it meant the end of the GWR whose Chocolate and Cream passenger cars in the video are a pure delight!)

I use a Kadee Speedi-Driver cleaner brush myself. I just clip it to the rails, dial up the required address, advance the throttle and touch the brush bristles to the wheels. The wheels spin and the dirt or whatever is gone.

  My version has a permanent "dock"  on the layout fascia! I also use the "tissue (N scale paper towel LOL) and alcohol method, generally repeating the process for each truck, moving the tissue across each time so there is a fresh patch. It sometimes takes 3 goes or more before no more crud comes onto the tissue. I wonder if anyone has done a qualitative analysis of wheel crud. Just curious. On the blood sugar crash - theh diabetes clinic suggested I pack along a granola bar or two for my walk. Kris got me some chocolate covered peanut butter flavoured things on Friday. We read the ingredients, and there are sugars of one kind and another from 8 sources in that list - 9 if you count Sorbitol as a slow acting sugar! Scary when your low doesn't respond to your remedial action - any clue why?

One more point. My roads always slope upward at the back of the layout. It looks better than if the road is horizontal until it reaches the backdrop which is vertical,

...slightly up to the brow of a hill is my fav. solution, where I can work it in. Really like your calendar road re-work!

Well, making ladder cages in metal for a plastic ladder is proving to be a bit of a challenge. I had the wood dowel form all worked out, and the cage soldered up after a bit of trial and error.. I thought I could super glue the ladder to the metal supports if I first put a strip of polypropylene bag between the dowel and the ladder.   Not an overwhelming success, but at least I was able to rescue both the ladder and the cage from the ensuing failure. So now I'm putting the ladder onto the cage "in free space" so to speak. Here it is with the first side of the ladder glued and drying. Another challenge is that the two ladders I had on hand were not quite long enough for the tower they are to go on. I shall have to fill the gap with styrene strip once this is all set up.

I wonder if there's any of the Egg Plant Parmigiana left? That with some Pita bread, and a JR Regular would do very well, thanks, Chole (and welcome back BTW, you have all been sorely missed.) While on the subject of staff changes, Ray thanks for taking care of the grey goose situation, the mess outside was becoming a bother, you know how geese are! .

I had to leave off writing for an hour to go downstairs and show my MIL a Video CD of various internet goodies - I've made 3 of these so far, from all sorts of video clips and still photos made into slide shows (thanks again Sawyer!); and this will be the second one she's seen. Ellen doesn't use a computer, so this is a way to share some of the great stuff that comes into my inbox. Anyway, back to gluing the ladder's other side; then it will be the platform at the top of the bulk sand tower. I think I'm going to cut off the top of the tower flush. I made it domed as I was using epoxy putty, and it seemed a natural shape - but all my photos of modern bins, plus the sanding towers in the Cornerstone kit, have flat tops. It will be easier to build a platform on the flat top. thanks for talking me into it! .

...with the wood stove keeping upstairs a cosy 77 F night and day for some weeks now, our furnace hasn't been on at all. So it's a good  thing it hasn't been super cold here - the current basement temp is about 44F, and the walls are not insulated, just bare concrete. Hope that head ache clears fast.

I've switched to Intermountain 33" for frieght and 36" for passenger - metal, to keep the track cleaner, and because I like the clickety-clack sound!

...while they are supposed to, and claim to, I find there can be hang ups between Atlas and Micro-Trains. I haven't any others. Can't help you with the odd  questions, beyond my ken. I thought the "friction" and "roller" thing was a prototype issue, rather than a modelling one. That raises a matter Keith (IIRC) raised earlier, about track plans etc., and needing a feed-in of ideas before selecting a course of action. I find I can come up with ideas - but I've so little actual RR experience / knowledge that I've no way of telling if they are anything remotely close to what RRs actually did/do. so, roller and friction, who knows - many of you doubtless, but I haven't a clue.

J.R.- I'm not looking for anything in particular. My hangup with my MRRing is, NO duplicate numbers. I have one pair of GN cars with #3529 ,both BlueBox but different shades of red. My FEC collection is the exception. Walthers is/was the only one making the Ortner gons. I bought two of each set they made. Thats why I have 28 of them. I usually use my 2 GP 40's to pull them like the prototype. As the other roads I have, no double numbers. Thankyou for asking. My roads include, ATSF ,BN-BNSF, CSX, ACL ,B&O ,B&M with B&A ,CR ,D&RG, FEC, GN, NS, N&W, NP, PFE, RI, SBD, Southern, SP, UP, Virginian, plus 6 to9 other rr's with between 1 to 5 cars. These rr's have at least 10 cars and some have 25 and more.

Freezing rain changing to snow today, the HI will remain close to the freezing point.  Not much completed on the MRR front.  Since I got the truck back Friday I went to Sam’s club to stock up on food stuff, Home Depot to pick up some stuff for around the house, Hobby Town and LHS to stock up on train stuff.


Rob, on the coupler subject I’ve had good experiences with several non-Kay Dee couplers.  Bachman, Lifelike, and Mc Henry are my top 3.  Kay Dee is still tops in the market, but I just couldn’t afford to convert everything I have to Kay Dee.

 Good morning. It's 54 and cloudy. The high will be 60 and partly cloudy. Inside where I am it's 71 with no heat on.

This morning I've been hard at work on the three Slovenian made (IHC?) boxcars I received recently. They all had truck mounted couplers which of course meant the car body rode slightly higher than a comparable car would today. I thought about body mounting Kadee coupler boxes  but they would require shimming and wouldn't look quite right. I decided instead to change the floors out with newer ones (Athearn) that already have body mounted couplers and good trucks. As a result I now have three boxcars that sit a little lower and look better. Two of the cars had roofwalks (which have since taken a walk) and now await a session with the Dremel to remove the lips around the mounting holes. I'll deal with the high mounted brake wheels later. All three cars now sport Kadee couplers. the trucks will likely be receiving my undivided attention later today. I've also been looking at a Yugoslavian made caboose that has droopy couplers. It looks like all it needs is a shim in each coupler box to support the couplers. Another caboose I'm looking at needs trucks and couplers. At first I thought it was a Tyco bicentennial model but upon checking the bottom I found out it's a Bachmann model. I'll have to see if I have any suitable trucks for it.

Rob- Yes most all knuckle couplers work with each other. EXCEPT Sergeant (sp?). They are built more prototypical size and function and they don't work well with anything but themselves. If you want to use them, you'd be replacing all the couplers on the fleet. Not bad if you were doing it anyway, but if someone wanted to run trains with you or you with them, you couldn't unless they had Sergeants (sp).  And like Lee, I have not changed my couplers, just to be changing them either. I also have a dukes mixture and they all work fine together as long as the coupler is functioning of course. So far I just change as needed, horn hook, coupler spring gone or is floppy, saggy or swingy and I do have a couple more that need changed out. I then use Kay-Dee #148 almost exclusively. I believe there was a time or two when I had to use some other number a while back, but mostly it's 148's. I like them. I don't know what that equates to in N scale, but I recommend that one.

Bookwork at the Church, then work at five. In between...., you guessed it.

I've decided how I am going to make the arc'd end of the peninsula so I think I will make that. then I must make another add on piece in the center of the peninsula. Then I will have sufficient flat space to take my layout stuff and put it on the new layout so I can finish taking the last section of the old layout down. Which means the stuff under that section must be dealt with.

Anybody ever think about putting the layout on the floor so you can't shove stuff under it.

  Whew..  couldn't sleep last night.  Laid in bed for an hour.. after sleeping 6 hours.. finally got up at 4 am.  I said to myself.. "I guess the day is waiting"~

  Well its 7 am now~ .. sunny as ever.. not a cloud in site.  Suppose to have rain in 2 hours.. as I look out my window..sunny and not a single cloud in site..  well maybe this is the calm before the storm'

  Although when I got up this morning .. the wind was howling.. blowing pretty hard.. something you usually dont' see at 4 am.  Now the air is calm.. very.  hmm I wonder~

I used the Walther’s brick street system on my layout and that worked out well.  My concrete roads are Elmer’s Styrofoam board, painted.

  Lee I thank you again for you help.  I do appreciate everyones help.  And I wish give back and share.  Its a two way street... we're all gonna learn. 

  Here's what I've learned.. doh!  I went to the local hobby store.. start digging through 4 boxes of goodies.  Sheet after sheet of plastic simulated bricks.  All kinds.. cobble.. roof singles.. brick.. the works.

  Well if anyone has ever read some of my threads.. you know I'm the kind of guy whos .. "just gotta see~"  I'm sorry folks.. my bloodlines are from MO.  'Sorry no hard feelins.. but show me~"  I dunno~  .. I just got to see it.. its me. 

  Well anyways Lee, I bought some stuff.. here's a pic.

  I won't go into each piece and what it is.  But all of them all real nice.. with all kinds of different textures.  What is important.. is the cobble stone by Noch.  It would appear its from Germany. Kopsteinpflaster.  Oh yeah.. cobblestone. lol.  Cut it with scissors, it has adhesive on the back.. and.. and.. the front is textured.  I wouldn't have bought it.. if it was flat... printed material. 

  Jim.. like you buying the kit with the stuff on the back.. well I bought this.. just because.. well I just had to see it also.

  Ah for four bucks.. "Give me one of those..  and.. ~   ooou  .. ah.. oh.. whoa.. yeah.. what else ya got?" .. lol.

  I wanted to see the actual size.. and compare it to my guestimation.. of a 'downsized' area'.. and compare it to each other.  I truly believe its helped... lol.

It's cloudy outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Light Snow will develop this afternoon, turn to a rain and snow mix, and then back to light snow this evening.  High will be 37°F late this afternoon. 

I need to drive down to the LHS and have him order a couple of odds and ends for me.  I know they are sending in a Walthers order today or tomorrow, so hopefully the items will come in without to much delay.  One of the items is listed on the Walthers web site as "In Transit"............??????  So, don't know about THAT one.

Ah, my order is here.  So I'm going to go sit in the back booth and stay warm by the stove.

 Good morning.  Got some light rain going on, and maybe snow later tonight. 

 Well I've been on the hopper (GT) since late yesterday.  I've about got it, to where I like it.   I will post some pictures later.  I'm also working on a boxcar, and hopefully I can get it finished later.  I sometimes work on two at the same time.  While one is drying the other car is getting worked on.

 Other than that, its mostly a "basement" day for me.

 Good Afternoon,

not a nice day today. i woke up with a terrible headache, which only now starts to clear a little. Must be the change in weather, it has started to rain and temps remain above freezing. That should melt the sn*w in no time!

Spend a good deal of time researching job opportunities outside of my field of activity. There seem to be openings in teaching, also for people who do not have a teaching background. They will get my resume and application by tomorrow!

I have detailed the plans for that British display layout and I do now know quite well, how to build it and how to scenic it, including the structures. I will use architectural foamboard for the structures and make them in situ. Have you ever had this feeling that you envision all these nitty grittys before you even have started to do some w*rk on it? Well, that´s the way I feel right now...

The only thing I don´t know is how to build the benchwork for this odd-shaped layout. I have started a thread in the layout section on this - let´s see, what kind of answers I can collect there.

My favorite TV show "Train Romantics" is coming up , so I´ll just have a coffee to go, Flo!

J.R.- I'm not looking for anything in particular. My hangup with my MRRing is, NO duplicate numbers. I have one pair of GN cars with #3529 ,both BlueBox but different shades of red. My FEC collection is the exception. Walthers is/was the only one making the Ortner gons. I bought two of each set they made. Thats why I have 28 of them. I usually use my 2 GP 40's to pull them like the prototype. As the other roads I have, no double numbers. Thankyou for asking. My roads include, ATSF ,BN-BNSF, CSX, ACL ,B&O ,B&M with B&A ,CR ,D&RG, FEC, GN, NS, N&W, NP, PFE, RI, SBD, Southern, SP, UP, Virginian, plus 6 to9 other rr's with between 1 to 5 cars. These rr's have at least 10 cars and some have 25 and more.

  Numbers?  Who can read numbers on N scale?.. Well I can't.    I had a 'Rock Island' diesel on the layout.. really nice.. and Jeanne walks by .. looks at it .. says .. "Ah nice,  The Rocket~!"  Then walks away.  I said to myself.. "  Wow,  now how did she know thats called The Rocket?  Couple hours later at dinner,  I asked her .. how did she know it was called that.? 

  She said.. its written on the Loco~

Good morning..Its cloudy and 32 here..I'll have coffee and toast please..I'm still tired but happy  My son took me to train show at Mall in Mattoon Illinois Saturday...They had some great N scale layouts..I got alot of good info from Dick Strous with the Dayton N track club..they have a outstanding layout and are friendly folks...Ipicked up some neet goodies..

and the good part was my Son footed the bill..even took me to my favorite place for lunch Sonic hadn't been there for 2 or 3 years..and to top it off he gave me a CD boom box and a blue grass CD so I can listen to the tunes while I work on the railroad..You all have a good one...Jerry
