Keith - IIRC, the conversion is something like temp in F minus 32, divided by 9 and then multiplied by 5. I used an internet conversion table
Yup, end of June, the sun sets at about 10.30 pm here - only to rise at 3.30 am again. Compensates a little for the "dark" days during winter.
Ulrich, if you are that high up on latitude, I can only imagine the summers, of the sun setting around 10:30 or so.. rising a little after 4 am. I've only seen that once.. and I was in Alaska. Alaska was something if you've never been there. I saw eagles everywhere.. every day. The formula for converting temps.. I believe is 9/5th's times Centigrade (Celsius scale) but I'm not too sure. Then again.. I remember back when you some of you guys said no use for math. My son said that too... I said.. in so many words.. "You see that gold nugget I paid 125 dollars when gold was 585 and ounce. Gold is now at $955 dollars and ounce." "How much is that nugget worth @ $955 an ounce." If there was ever one thing I remember concerning math.. its got to be the 'unknown quantity of X'.
Keith - even in really hot summers, temps never exceed the 2-digit range (in Fahrenheit) here. But remember, Hamburg is at the latitude, where Alaska starts - and that´s some miles north of your place.

But yet again murphy struck, I think one of the bolts for my shifter is loose so the top part of the stick "bends" when I shift.... yay, more stuff...
JR, I though about it, but I don't know where or what the previous owner did with it and I used it to get a "core charge." Despite the fact that it isn't too hard to swap out, I hope it doesn't go out and I won't have to use the warranty any time soon. My guess is he used it for off-roading and lived on a gravel road. I still have some fairly sizeable dents in the hardest to reach places (front of door and below the trin line on the passenger side) and the sides look like a relief map of the rockies. I'm still sanding and bondoing the thing...
Jeff, are you buying the cheap valu-craft starters? Those things don't last very long, the one that was in my car was fairly new, but it busted...

Lee - did they load test both batteries? I had to ditch both on my Excursion because the second would drag the first replaced one down enough to make it turn over slowly. Just got that back from having a sooted up pressure tube repaired and the exhaust pressure sensor replaced (ouch). We're over 165,000 now with little beyond regular up keep. The 7.3 diesel just keeps truckin along.
Spent the morning going over the turbo toilet with the owners mech who will help do the w.rk on it here. The turbo toilet is the ex Bob Sharp Racing twin turbo V-8 280zx we ran in IMSA back in the day (80's). It's a tube frame one-off and the only recognizable panel is the roof. Ulrich... on the flip side, the weather here gets very hot. When I was a boy, school would be let out if the temp. got above 102 degrees. Any higher your skin feels like its on fire.. or burning. At 113 degrees.. working.. you would have to drink a gallon of water.. just to continue working.. the next hour, or get a heat stroke... not a sun stroke.. but a heat stroke.
I see the huskies in the pic ... right now my husky is outside. Everymorning I take her out. This type of dog can only handle the heat if she has a chance to cool off. During mid summer.. she's out on the front lawn.. in shade tied up. She's a people watcher, and loves to just keep watch out front.
Ok.. here's my cute Lil caboose. And ~ .. lol... as you can see.. the top needs to be glued. Almost as cute as Jerry's caboose.

The Cowboy Boots (Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this one!) Did you hear about the Texas teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his cowboy boots? He asked for help and she could see why.. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, 'Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.' She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet... He then announced, 'These aren't my boots.' She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, 'Why didn't you say so?' like she wanted to.
Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, 'They're my brother's boots. My mom made me wear 'em.' Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But, she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, 'Now, where are your mittens?' He said, 'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots.'

Ah yes! Another terrible Winter storm completely fizzles out here in the Finger Lakes! We managed to get around half an inch over night. Just enogh to make a nce fresh clean look outside, nothing more. Today should be ????? All depends on which map and prediction at the National Weather Service you look at. Maybe somewhere between 0" and 6" of the stuff. Since my Snowblower is all gassed up and ready to go, I would bet closer to the 0". We are right at the edge of the snow and it keeps shifting around so who knows what will happen.
I have to get a couple prescription refills this afternoon, but the rest of the day is unencumbered.
Ulrich, congrats on your graduating with honors from the Gulag..... I know you are glad to get THAT over with! Hope you get rested up and can start to make some plans for your future.

Well, for one I miss Jerry's weather report. I miss Jerry as any other frequent patron of the Diner. As far as cabooses go~ I like em all. I don't care what line.. what ever.. if its something I don't have.. and I think its unusual.. I want it. I really don't want what everyone has, and if you came by and visited.. I'd probably give you a guided tour of every RR car I have..with a story behind it. I must admit, I've never seen a small caboose like that.. well at least not in N scale. But today I will check, take a photo or two.. and we'll see how if I do have one like it.
As for me today~ I shall do some reading .. again. I have read more books and articles that I have ever in my college years. Its information over-load. I've also been looking for some of my books.. of layout plans.. because I think I saw a VERY nice shelft layout .. perhaps for Ulrich to take a look at.

Robby, I think my set of pallets came from Life-like, 100 pallets for $3 or something like that.JR, I found a “water resistant” HD starter for $210 and a “water proof” solenoid for $26 at the local 4 wheel drive place for my 7.3L. The shop replaced one of two batteries for me and they cleaned and put the red sealant on all four posts and clamps last time it was in the shop. My F-250HD only has 106,500 miles on it; I can’t believe I’m having issues.Jeff, I use a static duster I found they work well, for the tough weathering, I mean dust I’ll also use a over-sized model paint brush to loosen it up.

Good morning. It's 28 here with some passing clouds. The high will be about 50 and it will be partly cloudy.Have to check this morning to see if my two remaining prescriptions have finally come in. If they haven't I'm gonna be building a fire under someones butt and lighting it off with gasoline and a flare. Other than that there's not much happening today. The Home Health nurse will be coming later to reattach my wound vacuum. Oh joy. NOT! Hopefully soon I'll be able to get back to doing some serious layout work, like cleaning it. The track is OK, but something has got to be done about the dust on the scenery. I can only reach a small portion of it. Until I can get underneath to the access holes the rest will have to wait.

Aztec- I sure hope you guys don't get the ice. I'd personally rather have snow than ice. Ice makes for the aforementioned road conditions and downed power lines and Todd's like electricity. Keeps fan in furnace going and the sump pump pumping. Things me like.

What's THAT!! Village snow plow!!! The road didn't even need plowed! THAT'S IT! They're just going around plowing peoples drives shut after they think they've gone to work. Ohhhhh, those rascals. They've got one coming. Gotta think on this for a while.
Jeff- You best get to feeling better so you can really get cleaning on the layout. It's starting to show in your pictures. That latest layout shot you're using for your avatar has some sort of hairy growth showing up in the picture.

Well I guess the plan today is more basement time. The wife called off, and the roads are a mess. Maybe this morning I can go and clean/start some cars. Oh JOY!!
Lee......I don't think the LHS has any pallets. I have some small pieces of wood from past buildings I can try and make some. Maybe if it doesn't snow this weekend (which they are calling for it), then I can see what other LHS might have.
Just got back in the house from clearing the sidewalk and driveway of snow again. There's probably around 3" so far. That's a whole lot better than the 6 to 8" there were predicting by morning. The roads don't look all that great, of course, they didn't before this latest round of snow either. I hope to see plows and salt trucks soon, as the wife has a doctors appointment this morning at 10:00 am. I want to try and get her there as she has been having some health issues. There's also the possibility that the office will call and cancel, lots of places have been shutting down.
Took a look around the house after shoveling this morning, and WOW, there's going to be a lot of yard work this spring. Bushes and hedges are pretty much flattened or broken. The neighbors cable line is also laying in the street after pulling off the house. It had a lot of ice on it for some reason compared to the other wires. Oh well, "and this too shall pass."

made it home from the GULAG, just barely. Road conditions are getting worse every minute, as there is more of that white stuff coming down. Not really much, just ´nuff to keep the roads slippery and icy. I wish I had one of those 4-wheel drives, my old Merc does not like to drive in this type of weather.
Chloe, I´ll have a big mug of coffee and some pretzels to munch on.
I am now the proud owner of a certificate, which confirms, that I have satisfactorily completed a course of studies in how to use MS Word and MS Excel. I will probably frame it and hang it up in ..., you can guess which room I mean. I wasted 9 precious weeks of my life, even taking it at risk driving there
I hope I can get some rest in the next days - need it desperately!

Good Morning All,
Made it to the shop ok this AM, only an inch of sn*w so far and the crews had already been out. We have an arbitration hearing by phone with GB this morning so we needed to get here by 8 anyway. Dispute with a formerly steady and straight supplier over prepaid non-delivery - oh well.
Museum last night cleaning and sorting again. We have surplus to needs a few bits of B'man 18" curved HO and a few straights if anyone's interested, plus a lifetime supply of 027. We were able to unload nearly all our O hi - rail at the Amhearst show. We're ready to start the scenicing of the O and then it's pretty much done. Next will be back onto the N display where we will totally change out the two main lines of the active display. This will be a big project so I'm doing a fair bit of noodling as to how best to reach the track on the 8" x 21" table. Should be fun.
Still haven't caught up the posts from when I left for the Fla trip but I'll see what I can do. Congrats to Ulrich for graduating the gulag. Does that add any weight to your CV? Hopefully now you can concentrate on recovering and formulating a plan forward. Let us know how you end up going as far as the scale thing.
Vincent - those Ford starters tend to gum up the Bendix. If you can get it apart and clean and lube the stuff, it'll probably be usable as a spare. Depends on how much of that Pensacola mush (sand and dust) got into it. The starter on my first C30 dually big block always used to heat soak and you'd have to crawl under it and soak it with wet towels so you could start it back up. That got old in a hurry!

Lee - Don't you have an F250? I'd check the solenoid if they still put a remote one up on the inner fender. They frequently leak and let in water then don't work correctly. Also check that the grounds on the battery (ies - mine have dual batteries) are clean along with the posts and that the batteries themselves are not encrusted with crud so they can bleed voltage across the two terminals. If you end up needing hard parts, a good privateer rebuild shop is miles better than the mass market autozone type rebuilds done Lord knows where.

First it would spin and the bendex wouldn’t engage. Took it to the shop and its ok for 2 weeks now the bendex prematurely disengages just before the truck starts. I really don’t want to drop $350 for a new starter since this one is only 3 years old. My old truck started having starter problems and I bought a $65 lifetime starter and ended up replacing it every 6-12 months. Finally I traded it in for a new truck, it was just to unreliable. The battery light keeps coming on alternator and batteries are only 2 weeks old. I think the starter is getting wet.

Chris - I am close to making up my mind (which is actually easy to do, as I won´t be in a position to go out and buy things for quite some time). I am leaning towards changing scale and go for that Salt Lake Route layout. Maybe it is a cultural issue - here in Germany, we are more into running trains than into switching operation. I have to talk to Petra about that extra space requirement - Saturday seems to be a good opportunity, as it is her birthday and I saved up some money to buy a little present. Unfortunately, unlike Rob´s wife, she is not into trains, but is more than just tolerating my hobby.

Vincent........First I spray the wheels and the trucks will dullcote. I have a paper plate mixed with rust colored powders. After the trucks are dry, I put the truck on my plate with the powder. I then take a brush and cover the whole truck with powder. Then I take a real soft bristle brush and knock off the extra powder. Finally I spray will dullcote. Sometimes I will "hit" the truck with some black powders. Not much but just enough to break up the rust color................................For the wheels, I do them about the same way. I spray the outer part of the wheel first with dullcote. After that drys I use the same powder from the plate. Take a soft brush and just put a good bit of powder on the wheel (inner part). Take the brush and kinda go around the inner part of the wheel, kinda like your making a circle. Then I normally just "blow" the rest of the powder off. Most of it should stay on the wheel. Then I dullcote. To clean the center of the wheel, I just use some "mineral spirits" and a thin brush. I dip the brush in the spirits, and go along the wheel (the part that will touch the track). Then I just use a piece of paper towel and kinda dry it off. Just go along the wheel and it will come clean. You will notice the extra powder/dullcote will be on the piece of paper. The same for the back of the wheel. Dullcote, and "flood" with powder. Dust it off with a brush (extra powder), and dullcote.
Hope I didn't get you confused. I thought I might have some close ups of my work, but I don't .
