I thought it might be about time to collect TOP responsibilities! Sup up people - Heard there was some competition getting the switcher to the diner!  The COC meeting wasn't overly long this time, so I've responded to a ASAP request from a Hysterical Society down the road some, and now I'm ready for a nightcap - hot chocolate would fit the bill please Cloe.

Jeff:

Looks like one or both of the rear brake wheel cylinders on my car are going out.
...One of yesterday's tasks was to fetch the car from the Esso station once the rear right cylinder had been replaced. An odd size apparently, and they had to special order it.  Took 4 days to get the part, ½ hour to fix it.  Decided to totally ignore the Resolution thing this year. Doesn't work out for me anyway - and my "agenda" for the layout remains much the same in any case.Whistling

Dick:

stainless steel dish.
....Dick, I guess YOU never froze your tongue to a flag pole as a kid! I wouldn't put out a metal water dish in winter. Tongue

Looks like it's that time againZzz, so Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Good (so-far...) Evening, bucket of coffee please 'n thank-you.

Welp, it be snowing...roads be a-greasing up...cops are a-goin' nuts with fools finding the ditches. Just waiting for the tones to drop, sending me out on a rescue... THIS time, the glasses stay in the pickup!!!

JIM: How do I hide gifts in plain sight? Simple! A profound lack of situational awareness coupled with visual complacency on her part. Case in point, she wanted a game for her computer a few years back. It arrived, and I placed it on top of the stack of computer games/programs. Right on the top. Couldn't miss it. I spent the next week or so (before her birthday) expecting her to see it. She never did. Finally, on her birthday, I told her THAT her gift was sitting in her studio waiting for her. She went into a frenzy trying to find it, looking behind books on the shelves, looking in cabinets, drawers, etc. When she finally saw it... she about lost her mind.

Wife = cheap entertainment... Whistling

Oh and JIM? Be glad you're not dealing with the "troubled" and "disturbed" around here... a 60 year old male is apparently driving on I-380 with the intention of dying this evening. He told CRPD he was driving a white van, family says "uh uh," it be purple. Sooooooooooo, LEOs from Iowa City/Coralville, ISP, Linn and Johnson County Sheriffs, etc.; are all keeping an eye out for the guy. HOPEFULLY they find him before he skids through the median and head-on into somebody. Angel Then again, he's already lied about what he's driving...hopefully he was honest with what road, and isn't on Hwy. 30 heading toward Clarence... I really don't need to respond to a "grinder" tonight.Disapprove

On a happier note...

DER JOHN: Who's the cute furry little feller? Rerun said he should get a burger...oh, and the puppy too.

Rerun and I shall be seated at the RC whilst I enjoy this fine "boot" coffee...the 'Ol Runner has some burgers...and we hope happy thoughts of a Q-word night...

Good Evening Diners!

The windchill right now is a brisk -24F and it is headed for -39 by tomorrow afternoon. Can you say cold enough to freeze something off a brass monkey?

Well, Pippa continues with her amazing recovery. I told her that cats are supposed to have nine lives and according to her if a cat has 9 lives, the mighty and magnificent Pip must have at least 90. According to the American Kennel Club, one trait of a Westie is that they have "no small amount of self esteem" and Pip certainly isn't lacking in that department.

Not doing much on the RR. I have been running my RS3 but it has some power pickup problems that have been documented by others on the forum. I will have to see about fixing that but for now the CPR has been banished from the Mortimer sub and the CNR has taken over its rightful place once again. The CN graciously does allow CP to store its 2 diesel switchers in the yard however along with its one caboose. Most of the CP rolling stock has also been removed.

Ulrich, I did look up that article about a layout to be built with removable sections but found that it wasn't more than a track plan and there really wasn't any info on how the thing could actually be built. I did find a really good article in a Brit magazine, Railway Modeller in the April/08 edition. In it there is a detailed article about a fellow who built a layout in sections that he stores in a cupboard. It is about 5x9 with an extension. It would seem that the benchwork is complicated and must be built to really close tolerances. Your L shaped shelf layout would likely be a lot more practical arrangement.

Not much else new in the Great White North. Anyone care for a little cool, crisp dry air? I'm sure we could send you a little. It might be a nice change from all that snow some of you have been getting. How would tomorrow suit you?

OK, the mighty Pip is looking for me as it is getting near bedtime so I better sign off for now.

Bedtime. Feeling a bit better.

Ray- Sounds like we had pretty much the same schedule tonight. Church meeting.

Dick- Wow! THAT was a close call. Say, you didn't happen to save the reading material did you? Oh well, glad you dodged the........shower.

Garry- New Years resolutions? Yep all done. I ate and hung up my coat. Just waiting for next year now.

Der- Cute little guy !

CNCharlie- I'm crossing my fingers and still keeping Pippa in the prayers.

Starting to snow now. Supposed to get about 5-7 inches by tomorrow night. I know that ain't much for you Northern guys but it's quite a bit for me. We'll see what happens. I guess I'll let you know tomorrow.

Prayers for those in need.

Hello all!  Thank you for the RBF trail, helped me find my way!!!

Jeff and Lee- Thanks for the help with the puter issue... my system won't tell me what the speed is on the RAM cards.  I hope to have the new cards within two weeks, gotta check with the "Boss" and the budget...

Drat, where does the time go... gotta hit the sheets... up in 4 hours (again)  geez time goes slow when your at work, then flies out the window when you get home!

I am still searching for my layout design template (the green plastic with the switches and curves) once I find THAT I will be able to make a more accurate drawing of the new layout design... wish me luck!

Thank you for all your best wishes for the exam on friday... I found out today that my trainhandling will not start until the last week of the month at the earliest. ( We were hoping to get out there a bit sooner, but I cannot complain, I am getting paid to train for almost 2 years) I am thankful to God for providing me this opportunity!

Have a great night my friends, keep on the tracks and stay safe!

Edit-

der5997

Der- almost forgot to ask... My wife LOVES Beagles, and I was wondering what the name of that adorably cute puppy is?

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Good late evening all.  Nothing happening in my neck of the woods, supposed to be snowing tomorrow down here in Bama.  I'll enjoy it, although the weather guessers say taht we aren't going to be accumulating any, so we'll see.  Welp, so far the tracking of my SD40-2 is as follows, I should see it tomorrow, as of 7:24 this evening it was in Montgomery, AL, just a short 50-ish mile hop from here at the house.  My only point of slight concern is whether it'll get here in the morning or afternoon, guess I'll have to wait and see.

Going to be w**king tomorrow from 11:30-5:30, then tomorrow evening I doubt that any of you will be seeing me as I will be cheering for my team, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide as they take on the Texas Longhorns for the BCS National Title.  Roll Tide!!!

Welp, that's about it for me, gotta go jump in the shower and get myself a little rest.

 Good Morning,

Brrrrr - it is icy cold outside, - 10 C and going down even further. Seems, as if the weather guesser were right this time with their prediction.

Zoe, I´ll have coffee and the big breakfast platter, please!

Just as I had coupled my little 0-6-0 steamer to the Diner and began the move to the new track, Bama coupled his GP38 to the other side and pulled the car in the other direction. My little loco did lose a coupler and the rear pilot in the process . Tom (tstage) came to the rescue, but as a result, my little steamer is now banned from MR´s tracks - Sigh

The longer I keep looking at that L-shaped switching layout, the more I start to like it. It will need some work on it to fit into the given space, but despite the lack of continous  running, it offers a multitude of operation possibilities. There are some yet unsolved issues, i.e. how to dock the car float onto the apron, but basically it meets all my expectations. I guess I just have to get going in this direction ...

John - that puppy is soo cute. I showed the picture to Petra and she immediately fell in love. Her last dog was also a beagle girl named "Carrot".

Sawyer - Rugby is certainly one tough n´ rough a game - watch out for yourself not get some of your bones broken.  I now what I am taking about ...

Jim - our plans to cross the big pond are still around, although it will be quite a complex adventure. Getting a green card for the US is close to impossible in our age, and in Canada, you need to be able to invest quite a bit of money and employ local people - not so easy a deed without the necessary funds. I will nevertheless build that layout in such a way that it could be packed up and toted along!

Todd - will you please keep all your gems with you? Achooh, I think you already passed it on to me!  The best way to get rid of it is to drink a tall glass of hot wodka, spiced up with pepper - a receipe from cold Siberia!

As German Railroad is semi-privatized in view of a planned IPO, the have been economizing on maintenance. The number of derailments is increasing rapidly. Currently, the main line to and from Berlin to the main industrial area is completely blocked, following a series of derailments in the last two days. Damages are estimated to the tune of $ 50 million, for which the tax payer now has to jump in. Unfortunately, the bloke who is in the end responsible for this, cannot be held liable.

Have a great day!

Good Morning all,

Garry, I think it was a bottle switcher (steam) from the local power plant.

Joe, you know what I think? I think it doesn’t matter what I think.  Your buddy is blinded by “love” and he won’t see the imperfections of his current romance until it’s over.  I doubt you will be able to convince him that anything is wrong until after he breaks up with her, then he won’t understand why he didn’t listen to you in the first place.  Be a friend and be prepared to help him back up when he falls.

Dick, North East Ohio here; we are making preparations to do just that.  Weather guessers say it will hit here around 1600 today and in 24 hours we should have 21” to 25” on the ground here.  I don’t have any blue boxes sequestered in preparations, however I have 4 Suydam kits, 5 Accurail kits, 3 Branch line kits, and about 12 Valley kits, and I should be ok.

My New Year resolution is to try and procrastinate more and enjoy life; unfortunately it looks like I’ll be too busy to procrastinate, maybe next year.   No real work on the layout last night; however I did use the shop-vac and a brush to remove the errant ballast in the yard last night.  Maybe tonight I can clean up the turnouts and paint the ground throws.  One side of the ground throw is yellow and the other side will be green to show the switch position.

Ulrich, instead of a home layout have you considered joining a local club, then building a module of your own vs. an entire layout?

Mornin' all!

Chilly and snowy around here today.  3-6" of the nasty white stuff is supposed to come today.  Of course, everyone will drive like they've never seen the stuff before, even though we've had 7.5" already this year.  It always gets me..........Indiana drivers are funny when it comes to snow.  Even when they have driven on snow and ice recently, they seem to have to relearn every time there's new accumulation.  New England was so different!

Oh well.......being snowed on will give me an excuse to do more on the layout, right?

Lee - I am a bit of a lone wolf when it comes to model railroading, as my choice is US prototype. The clubs we have around in my area all go for German prototype, which is just not my cup of tea. Club dues are also prohibitive - a regular membership runs up to $ 200 a year - money I´d rather spend on my own thing. However, I am still quite positive that I find a way to get started on model railroading again.

ns3010 - as to your question to the audience - it is difficult to judge the situation without hearing the other part. The best is not to get involved and leave it to the concerned parties to sort it out. You just can´t win in this situation.

Morning ya'll, biscuits and grazy for me

Not much doing today. It might snow later today so that's gonna be intresting.

Jim, I have 2 of those instructors. My english and world religions instructors are both crazy; After 1 day, I've already read close to 75 pages, and done a 600+ word essay... I hate Gordon rule writing classes....

Tom, aww, no Challenger? Well, make sure you get pictures of the new articulated you're getting. Now that I think about it, I though I saw an ad a little bit back that Sunset was also making the yellowstones... BTW, you might like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XeRrMPyJaU&feature=related

Der, nice little puppy you have there.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Sam,

[start]

[control panel]

[system]

should show you your current RAM configuration and front side bus.

That would show him how much RAM he has but not what speed it is. For example, the speed on mine is 667 but that screen doesn't tell me that.

True, but I would hope they speed matched the RAM with the FSB, otherwise your just shooting yourself in the foot.  Kind of like buying a fancy sports car with a 50 hp engine.

Ah ha. I see what you're getting at. The number indicated by the red arrow here. The same number is on my memory sticks in addition to the frequency #, in my case, 667. I'm looking to upgrade to 800.

Good morning. It's 46 and very wet. There will be more rain coming in later.

I was thinking about my cars brake problem last night and I started having the sneaking suspicion that the front brakes aren't working. I'll have to check this out when the weather allows. If that's the case it would indicate a possible master cylinder problem. The brake fluid level is OK but the function isn't. Normally the front of the car will lower quite a bit when the brakes are applied, but now it doesn't, rather the braking seems to be coming from the rear. There's been no indication that the front pads need replacing but they'll get checked anyway. I do know that the brake pedal travel is excessive, almost all the way to the floor. The only time it did this in the past was when the master cylinder failed completely. Yet another thing to strain the finances.

Good morning all.  Well, I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of two things.  First off, I'm waiting for my SD40-2 which will arrive today via UPS at some point, I checked its status this morning and it was still up in Montgomery, which means it'll be heading this way soon.  I'm also waiting on this evening so I can see whom will be the BCS National Champs.  My bets are on my good guys (The University of Alabama Crimson Tide) are going to beat the dog snot out of Texas.  But only time will tell.

Expecting snow today, not much 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the stuff, but for my area that's going to be interesting this afternoon and tonight.  I honestly can't wait, for someone like me who has grown up in Alabama and gone through the summers here (as Jeff can also attest to the Louisiana summers), seeing snow just brings out the kid in ya.  Heck, I might even go out this evening and build a snowman if we get that much.

As for this morning, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pankcakes, some sausage and a tall glass of milk to wash it all down.  I've gotta be at w**k from 11:30-5:30, so I might be on in the interim before the game, and I'm sure that I'll be on afterwards, but I can't be certain of that.

And finally, Ulrich, I apologize for the damage to your 0-6-0, if there's anyway I can help, be it with actual repair of the unit or payment for damages/parts, you just let me know (besides, I DON'T want to get Vinny involved...)

Good morning. I'll have eggs over easy, bacon and hash browns with toast and grape jam please and a cup of coffee thank you.

Well it happened. Awoke to about 4 inches of fresh powder. Still coming done a bit, real lite. Supposed to get maybe another 1-3 by tonight. We'll see. Didn't have to shovel Brenda out as she got up early and shut the alarm off then went and shoveled herself out. Said she didn't want to disturb me because I was sick. Not that I want to shovel snow, but actually being out in the moist cool air actually helps me breathe better. I didn't tell her thatWhistling.

Dick-Laugh And I have some kits and some track plus some wood, so that means I won't get snowed in

Ulrich- I...... don't think I'll try the TALL glass of hot wodka. I'm loopy enough. But thanks for asking. I am about ready to dip into the Mason jar of Mom's magic elixir. Just honey, lemon and whiskey. She swears the stuff is wonderful. And I'd have to agree. Even Brenda dipped into it a year or two ago out of desperation because nothing she could get was working and just couldn't sleep. Now, after all the years of saying, "no way" she swears by the stuff. Must use sparingly as it is a bit potent. Just a couple of sips will do. I remember as a kid taking the stuff, I thought it tasted horrible. Still do. But, it worked for the night time coughs. Still does.

Joe-I super duper double ditto what Lee and Ulrich said on the girl thing. Couldn't have said it any better. They're kids. "love" will come and go countless times. Hearts will mend then be broken again. That's life. Better get used too it.

PC- We have the same retention deficient drivers here in Illinois with a silent "s".

Well I guess I'll make a trip to the basement and see what I end up doing. I'm going to wait a bit before shoveling the drive in case of more snow. See Lee? Easy. Don't give up on the resolution man.

Have a Great Day!!!

Jeff- Based on your description, I would say you are looking at the master cylinder as you said. A strain to the finances, but relatively inexpensive as to other problems. At least other than the bleeding, there isn't much, on the ground time. Kill the back time yes, on the ground time not a lot.

Hey Jeff, that sounds like either you've got an issue with either the master cylinder (like the plunger is allowing fluid to bypass and not actually leave the cylinder so the brake fluid level remains fine, but you have no braking effort) which is more likely, or the proportioning valve (controls front-to-rear brake bias) is somehow going/gone bad and only allowing the rear brakes (which normally only does about 25%-35% of the stopping in a normal car/truck) to do most of the whoa-ing up.

And finally, Ulrich, I apologize for the damage to your 0-6-0, if there's anyway I can help, be it with actual repair of the unit or payment for damages/parts, you just let me know (besides, I DON'T want to get Vinny involved...)

Yeah!!, we better keep Vinnie out of this- Glad he was sound asleep, so he did not notice. Talking of the repair on the 0-6-0, it is being dealt with by the road´s shop people. Actually, a good reason to rebuilt it into an Allegheny, as there are two of its kind around!

Bama- Ok you can be a kid if you choose with the snow. But think of this. In the midwest or central U.S. or what ever they call us here, we get to enjoy the blistering summers touching on 100 an above degrees, AND the frigid winters at near or below zero. That my friend, is a 100 degree difference in seasonal temperatures. I'm not that keen on snow. Why don't I move? I have no idea. Parents I guess. Anyway, I hope it snows enough for you to build your snowman. I know you'll be wanting something to do during the game. Might get a bit boring what with Texas constantly hogging the ball and making all those touchdowns. Rude bunch of kids.Laugh

Hot coffee and hot oatmeal for me please.

Don't worry about the 0-6-0, Ulrich. It's only a little tender behind.

Ice has been forming on our lake lately. Now, there is snow on the ice. Highly unusual. The lake is really the Cumberland River with a large dam. Upstream from here is south into TN and then east through Clarksville and Nashville. Farther up stream is back in KY and on to the Alleghenies. The Cumberland River in Nashville is also frigid, and I doubt Al Gore is sitting on his deck at his mansion there. Nor is it likely he is cruising in the Cumberland on his river yacht. Temperature lows will be below 10 F through the weekend. Up north, it is cold enough for politicians to actually have their hands in their own pockets.

There is not enough ice to purchase any ice skates. That is just as well. Last time I tried ice skating it was funny enough for the ice to make a few cracks.

Cheers everyone.

Good morning.  Its snowing AGAIN, and that makes six days in a row.  Calling for 3-6 inches with the next storm.  As mush as the weather people have been wrong, we might get a inch or a foot.  You never know.

I went and switched cars with the wife.  Its suppose to be real bad by this afternoon.  At least she will have better traction.

Not much planned today.  Maybe see what I can do on the layout today.

Hope everybody stays warm, and hope you "southerns" get some snow.   From one "southern" to another.............YOU CAN HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Robby, I'll always take the snow when it comes.

And yes Todd, I know that you guys have a big temp difference up/over there, at least y'all mostly have seasons.  Down here we have Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Cooler/Rainy season.  And it'll be funny to see what Texas can do against Terrance Cody, they've already said that they're going to have to double-team him the whole game.....
