Good morning, Diners ..... Hot oatmeal & hot coffee please. .....

We're having computer problems again and that kept me busy yesterday. ...

Sam ... Congrats for your exam results. Also, I know what you mean about some railroaders having a problem with railfans. Just remember it is their problem and not yours. I know guys who are both railroaders and railfans.  I learned not to say much about the hobby at work during my railroad years.

Bama ... congrats on the U of A win. My neice is studying psychology there. I guess that's OK for her, but I did not care much for my psychology classes. I questioned why I needed any of the humanity classes to get my diplomas. I wondered why training rats would have any sort of practicle applications.

Jeff ... Nice photo. Looks like GP-40's are in charge today.

We could use some winds coming from the Gulf instead of from Canada. It's rather cool here.

I'm working on the layout some more. Still working out some bugs and going thru the learning curve with DCC. The process has resulted in some smashed up plastic Hayes bump posts.  Angry

I'm continuing my FT ABBA project now that my Walthers order is here. (One item was micro scale decals). The striping for the CB&Q F units is a bit tricky. There is a narrow stripe that is placed on a rivit strip along the sides of the units, and the decal likes to slide back and forth on the rivit heads. I apply the solvaset and with luck the decal does not move out of place then. Other parts are also a challenge.

Another project in progress is an Ulrich Models trailer that I am painting and lettering for Great Northern piggyback with the "Empire Builder" scheme.

Happy Model Railroading.

Because of my hours at my job, I don't get to the diner as often as I use to. The Old-timers like Der and Dick and Cape Jim know me. That doesn't mean I am not concerned with each and everyone. I have serious wife problems and , thankfully, the prayers from all helped. She will be having more ops. on spine next month and - what will be? will be.      ---- Had to replace stoplight bulb, went to Discount auto and almost had a heart attack. Two bulbs-$4.99. Didn't buy. Went to regular auto parts store, 2 1157 bulbs , 64 cents with tax.  Much better.

Well, I was wrong and weather-man correct. Its 33 f and some sleet. Hands and ears cold. It sure reminds me why I left N.Y. to live in Warm sunny Fla.   lol.

FEC bought sd-40's from U P a few years ago. Left them in original colors and put their logos on them . Somewhere I have photos of them.

Hope all are staying warm. Prayers for all, including me.

Good morning,

[comment deleted by selector.  The post to which this was a reference was offensive and deleted, so the comment here is out of place]

JEFF: My half-a-cent worth of opinion: I admire you for the fact that you do accomplish so much, you don't just lay around, you're doing things for yourself AND for others. Who among us hasn't or doesn't "overdo it" from time to time? Hell JEFF, I salute you!

Also, I know all too well what it's like having to borrow money from family. I would've sooner ate my spleen right out of my abdominal cavity.

With the car, from what I remember seeing in photos, I always thought it was a Fire Dept. issued car for your role as Safety Officer. I just thought maybe, in that case, the FD would/could help with the maintenance/upkeep on it. Maybe not. Best wishes to you, as always.

I'm gonna just have a seat at the RC, enjoy some of Ed's OJ...and a pot of coffee...and try to refrain from "playing with the troll."

Good afternoon gents, it has struggled to get to 24F (-5C) today and will not get much warmer if at all. Another 1" of snow overnight, just enough to be a nuisance. I may get some MRR'g done today. although I am Lector at 4pm Mass so it looks like that may be after church.

[edited for content by selector.  A previous comment by another person was offensive, and the comment here was a comment on that post.  The first post has been deleted, so this comment would otherwise cause confusion.]

J.R. : Yes, I am planning to attend the show in West Springfield, and will look you up, please let me know which building at section number you will be at.

Good Morning, Flo (yeah, for a few minutes, anyway), I'll have a stack of waffles, a pat of butter on top, and some maple syrup, with a Rio Grande mug of coffee, please 'n' thank-you-ma'am!

GMTRacing
Jim - you either take notes or have a photographic memory. I

JR, while I like to think my memory is good, you flatter me. I was tossing my fishing line out there, figuring that surely someone had experience with IHC's locos (maybe even their newer 'Golden' whatever). I'm having to stick with a Mikado or Pacific in order to fit on the Walthers 90' turntable kit I have (yet to build). Since the CAW RR is set in the mid-to-late 1950's, I'll only have a few steam engines in the stalls, but will need the turntable for those. Thanks for the info - the FDT/BLI engines are stretching my budget (a lot), and there's that other thing of having to buy them 'RIGHT NOW' before they run out of them. So I can't always find the MIkado or Pacific (for Western RR's) at the 'right' time for me.

Barry, I hear you on having sunshine with my cold weather. It does (from inside...) make me think I feel a little warmer, anyway. Wink Now you know, you'll likely need to drill some holes in that spare door before you get done building your N scale empire, right? Whistling Hey, email a pic of Pippa to me, please. Thanks!

So Jeff - what kind of things (MRR'ing or otherwise) do you have planned for this weekend?

Flip, I don't know about the D&RGW Cookie Box colors, only ones I've seen have been the silver kind. But maybe they had some of the white ones at some time (perhaps dropped that after seeing how easily dirt showed on the white vs. the silver?).

Ulrich, it's good that you dodged the sn*w this time around. Don't they have any snow removal stuff, as far north as you live? On your layout plans, think in terms of the L-shape idea, and that it's just a matter of when, not if, you will build it. Sometimes we have to delay plans, but that needn't mean we drop them altogether. The L-shaped plan might be more moveable if you get it started/finished and later get to the point where you can hop the pond. And if you are delayed until after the 'pond-hopping', you will still have some ideas of what items (small or bigger) that you need to see about getting (like mini-projects). Just try not to get too far ahead (like me) and find you have more stuff than can be fitted into your layout space (there or on this side of yon pond).

Sawyer, make sure your insurance is paid up at least through a couple of weeks after today (just in case...). Think you might've hurt you back because you held back in tackling your coach? Maybe you should have just tackled him like anyone else? Whistling

Flip, will keep Deb in mind and AngelAngel. Yeah, if I'd have found the price for those bulbs that high, I'd be checking other places too. Discount? uh, no...

Got in touch with my buddy Mark, and we're gonna get together this evening to get some pizza. It's been too long for me since we got together last time, and besides, he doesn't have his license and lives on a farm (middle of nowhere, basically). I'm sure he would like to get away from his bull, cows and two dogs and see some people - as well as have some pizza! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Got one call-out (early morning, but turned out to be relationship thing (he admitted to the affair she'd suspected was going on, but had been denying to herself), didn't require any admissions to a unit, just a referral. I lollygagged for a while, got to the laundromat and saw lots of cars there (meaning, possible waits on dryers, taking longer), and decided since it's right after payday, I will let the laundromat people do it for me today! Me, after dropping that load (so to speak...Wink), I've been checking over paint colors I have vs. those I would like to have (like for weathering, etc.). Had hoped my LHS order might come in, but it may be Monday or later next week, I guess. Car started up fine today with the new battery. Smile Glad about that, since when I left on that call-out, it was about 3 F (and I think the wind chill was not far awy, no breeze, thank Heaven). Scraper - GOT to buy another scraper than my current one. Doesn't do much of a job, and it isn't wide enough.

Think I'll go get groceries, since I've filled my tummy here (less likely to buy some weird thing I don't really need ...). Then finish up some smaller jobs at home, like clearing the DR table (again/still/yet once more).

Hint: bottom right of all posts, next-to-last phrase, blue link...

Take care and stay warm out there!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

So Jeff - what kind of things (MRR'ing or otherwise) do you have planned for this weekend?

Probably nothing more strenuous than clearing some of the junk off the layout. There's leftover pieces from some projects, a pile of co-pay receipts from the pharmacies and providers my medication and equipment come from as well as some regular household clutter.

Ulrich, do you think the snow plows have been called out?  Caught this one several years ago on a trip to Germany.  Can't recall where, but it was just outside a large passenger depot on the way from Frankfurt to Dresden via a circuitous route.  Sorry, for the poor photo.  Dusk was falling, but as I recall the plow had only two wheel axles.

A small bowl of nuts & fruit, please.

For a dusting of snow a couple nights ago, it sure turned into impossible to traverse ice around our valley and surrounding counties. Wife cannot get out the driveway, let alone all the way to one of the open highways. Between the hills and bridges, we're probably stuck here on the ol' farm until Monday. Wife didn't really mind taking off from work anyway. I'm still breaking ice for the critters here 2-3 times a day/night.

Reading some of your posts, I must have bought some lemon locos. Worst ones are the Proto Berk & Bach Lt Mountain. I can pull out my older Kato Mike or Riv Hudson and they still run very smooth. All the vintage stuff doesn't begin to compare to the new models in "detail work", but at least they still run like new after all those years.Mischief  Still, I wouldn't trade my Kato GS-4 for anything, it's my best running steamer. ALL my deisels, vintage & new run great, with the advantage going to the new for details and slow creep speeds. That's just been my personal experience. (wishing I had started back with HO)

Well, going to snack away in a corner booth for a bit. Hope everyone is doing well.

Der John,  That said, I was confusing Keith  and Sawyer in the turnout department (my mistake on the "Sawyer uses Peco turnouts assertion.)   No problem here John,  things are looking very nice… I really like the long turnouts.   Chris, KEITH: OK...THAT-all makes a bit more sense now... still looks like a heckuvalotta switches to me..  It sure does Chris,  but let me just say one thing.  If you take two long streamliners.. that is equal to almost 3 mediums in length.  That being said,  Jeanne and I took all the factors in, in making a working yard.  We had to include as much as possible, and also set aside space for re-railers.  We decided to go with the longest turnouts for the reason of having liners and long strings of liners and don't want to run the risks of derailments.  But we did keep in mind… all the things of making it work.  There are some setbacks due to placing of the re-railers, but all and all, we’re happy.  Perhaps a photo of liners is in due order.    Jim,  Keith, I figure from your post that you just love a nice challenge on the layout, right?  Actually 20 years ago,  I had said I could build a house for 65 thousand dollars.  A two story,  passive solar home with all the trimmings you could ask for… all for 65 thousand.   Our friends, dad and mom laughed at us.. everyone did.  But did Keith and Jeanne build a nice home?  For 65 thousand?  Nope,  it cost 67 thousand.  So yes,   I do love a challenge.   Always have~  Maybe I'll post a pic one of these days.    Nah, my suggestions on cork will keep (I think I'll still remember them next year, or the year after that ..”

Oh yeah greeeat~   Just what I need.   I can't even remember what were the reasons why people soak the cork in the first place. Perhaps thats 'old school'  Lol  I thought cork would be the last thing, since most yards are lower than the mains.  But that’s the big question I guess.  Do I cork the yard?  I’m think NOT~   for various reasons.  Too much trouble for one.. lol.  And I’d have no problems with shimming the track.    Although,  the noise in the yard could be a problem.

Ok.. the next post you might see would be a pic of my 'dream layout' ..lol.. with liners all lined up.. perhaps I need to see that too!

Jeff,  keep up with the photos,  I make copies of them~  .. lol.  Nice~

Perhaps we should use some of Obama's stimulus funds to make this McCloud River R.R. snowplow serviceable again and send it to our Quebec friends.

Good afternoon my friends!  Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers for me, I indeed passed, with the help of my co-workers in quizing me.

Chloe, may I please have a RBF, a LARGE glass of OJ, an Italian Hoagie with all the fixin's, and an ExtraLarge helping of KeyLime Pie?  Thank you! I'll sit at the counter if that's ok with you?

I have to update my timecards, Daily Train Log Sheets, AND study the territory from County Interlocking to Morris Interlocking (as that is the next section to be tested on)!  Fortunately AMTRAK could only see us on the 21st, so that gives me 2 weeks to learn the new territory and brush up on the last section!  Whew!

[comment deleted by selector. It refers to a post placed previously by another member.  That post was deeemed to be offensive and was deleted, so the comment here would now just be confusing.]

Garry- I understand completely.  There are quite a few "Rail Fans" AND "Rail Buffs" on property where I work.  I'm just stayin' on the DL until I am promoted, then they can't do a whole lot to me, especially because by that point I will be "covered" by the BLET and their respective union agreements!

Jim - The sketch I am guessing you are reffering to is the 5x10 with the extension... I was planning on having an arrival departure track, along with an engine servicing facility on that little piece of realestate!  I am toying with the idea of adding another table to the other side of the extension.  THAT would probably turn it into some sort of modified dogbone... or other such shape!  I had a big explanation written but deleted it.... faster to just draw than it is to try to describe!

I have some errands I have to take care of... check back in later!

TTFN!!!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

I'm surprised that the carport roof does not extend out much further. In Montreal QC there is a architectural feature that involves extending the carport/garage roof about 8-10' from the front of said structure. That is so that one can back their car into and get out of driveways that are sloped into the structure. Here, I don't 'need' that although there have been times---Whistling

Well, people .

I have had the weirdest day----a couple of 'Blivits Of Bizarreness' for your reading 'pleasure'

also ended up with a fellow in front of me wearing Pink Ballerina Slippers and a TUTU if you will----WhistlingConfused

2) Saw a cement mixer barrel-arsing through some crossing gates going in the opposite direction from me and BARELY missed getting creamed by an oncoming CN train by INCHES!! And the train just blew that horn!!!ShockAngry How is it that these people are allowed to drive!!!??AngryGrumpy Banged HeadSoapBox

Evenin Folks!

Got home a couple hours ago from the Meet.  We had a great day with 3 excellent clinics, lots of layouts to visit (I only got to one myself, but I was the last to leave the site of the morning program), and a great local hobby shop to snoop around in.  Had about 35 people there.  The weather was rotten this morning with sn*w covered roads and some very slippery driving.  Frankly if I was not one of the people responsible, I would have turned around and headed back home after about 2 blocks....  I bet several people did just THAT!

I didn't get many photos of the morning session (not even ones of the models entered in the Model Contest)  Every one of the models got some votes.  The clinics were great, particularly those I have not seen before.  Bill Brown, MMR did a presentation on his new layout which will be in a 2,400 sq. foot basement....  He is modeling a western prototype, and he was concentrating on the part he now has finished.  It is an area where there was a mine.  Very high steep cliffs and mountains with each of the original buildings present that were used at the site.  If you compare the photos he has of the finished layout and the photos of the original. you can't tell which is which.  Literally!!!  I have never seen the likes of his work!  And those that have seen it say it is the best of the best of the best!  We also had a fascinating clinic on "Operating by TT & TO, an introduction".  Since Operations is something I realy want to get started on my layout, it was most helpful to me.

I see the self appointed spreader of gloom has paid us a visit..........Whistling

Barry, hope you got a plate number and reported it!!!!

Zoe, I'm hungry and I don't know what I want.  Still serving breakfast?  I'll have a tall glass of OJ, and the #2 special then  (all my usual ways except on coffee).  I'll wait til later for the coffee.....  Thanks!

I forget who was asking for licks of the Flat Car, I'll get a couple tomorrow and post 'em.

Later!

Good evening. Staying warm I hope. A bowl of chili please and some tortilllas oh and a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Thank you.

I've been stewing over you know what pretty much all day and had some fantastic reply I was going to make. I came home, (found I'd left the computer signed into the diner) but by then had pretty much talked myself out of fanning the flames so to speak. Then I read where Chris' half cent opinion had said almost exactly what I was going to say. Except shorter. A LOT shorter. Since I see that the original post has been removed, I won't bring it up again. I would like to add one thing though. My hats off to you Jeff, you do the best, and the most you can within the limits that you and no one else knows. Funny how there are so many people with no ailments doing less for the community and to be self sufficient.

Welp, got Mom home. Not without a stop at Denny's. She likes the grilled shrimp on a stick from the seniors menu. Then I went to the store for her and picked up a few things she needed and then after unpacking her and getting her settled back in, here I am. Home.

Flip- You can rest assured that us "new guys" feel the same way. We have you and Deb in ours prayers or well wishes as we believe. I can't think of a good weather crack for you right now, so I'll pass this timeGrumpy.

Mark's got the right idea with the snowplows.Thumbs Up

Barry- Always worth a trip to the toy section of Walmart when I'm there to check out the cars that show up sometimes. And cheap too. Sorry you had to put up with the "Wal-martian" have you been to Peopleofwalmart.com? Scary and still we go

I think I‘ll have a bit of a snack and sit down in the old easy chair in front of the boobtube. Kinda lost the gumption for the layout. Oh well tomorrow‘s another day.

G'.....Good Evening, ahh Flo? What is MARK doing with all of those ice blocks there behind the Diner???

Sounds like it was an interesting day for the Diner patrons... we start-out with a visit from the Grinch who tried to steal our Christmas, move into tu-tu's and ballerina slippers at Wallyworld (THAT website is the first thing I though of...scary!), idiots blasting through grade crossings (I'll bet the crew got a few numbers and a "near-miss" report on-file), and icy roads leading to a train show.

Yeah...........whattaday.

I decided to take a break from it all, settled in on the couch for a wonderful winter's day nap. I was awoken a few hours later by "the pitter-patter of little feet." Actually, it was the "clomp clomp clomp" of Loving Wife in her boots preparing to take Rerun outside. Upon seeing movement under the blanket on the couch, Rerun launched like a rocket, landing on my legs and merrily bounding up to my partially-buried head. A COLD nose and hot dog tongue soon followed. Dead "Daddy Daddy Daddy!" He said, "Mommy is taking me outside, you should come with us!"

Whowouldathunk "toidy time" for the dog would turn into a "family event???"

So, we turn now to the weather report from Clarence...where it is unbelievably cold, but...with NO WIND! Thank Heaven for small miracles.

Didn't get any RR stuff done today, didn't even make it THAT far. Maybe yet this evening.

Think I'll settle into a corner booth this time...might need another.........*yawn* nap....

No, I don't think you will have to worry about that.

Jim, thanks for the package, just got it today!!!, and I'm already putting them to use on my GP40-2 chassis.  I really do appreciate it.

Well y'all, I'm currently watching Sleeping Beauty, eating homeade beans and weenies, and getting ready to throw Heather into the tub.  Tomorrow comes church and then going to my parent's house to get my train stuff and hang out with them for a while.  I'm also going to be testing my GP40-2 and make sure that there aren't any downsides to only running it with the rear truck actually pulling (or pushing as the case may be).  It also seems that I'm going to be needing some 2-56 screws so that I can make all my coupler conversions.  Anyone have an good suggestions of where I could get them? (going to try local hardware stores, Lowes and Radio Shack on Monday), but if all else fails, I need to know where to get them.

That's about it from my neck of the woods, so I guess I'll check back in here later, who knows I might even get some track dropped on Monday and pull some cars round and round.

Evenin' again folks!

Zoe I'm ready for THAT cup of decafe now if you please.  Yes in a FGLK mug, thanks you.

For those of you who might be interested, I have put some photos of the layout I visited today. MMR Brian Curry's "n" scale layout.  He is a master of scenery and hand lays a lot of his track......  He is in the process of redoing some of his narrow guage track......  Has to seen to be believed!  Anyway here is the link: http://s66.photobucket.com/albums/h259/slow_rr/Other%20Layouts/  Photos are done with a boot flash attachment on my Digital Rebel.  better than the built in flash, but still a flash photo.....Sigh

Wish I had been able to get some of the other layouts on display, but they were only open until 3PM and I didn't make it back to Auburn untill a few minutes before 3....

Later!

It's 27 at the moment heading for 18. Spent part of the afternoon down at my parents place waiting on the Home Health nurse. She finally showed up and changed out my wound vacuum dressing then I used my mother's car since mine is down to go to the pharmacy then to Wal-Mart to get some some things I needed. Man, I love those electric carts. I never could have gotten what I needed without one. Came back home and unloaded the stuff then after a rest took my mother's car back to her. We spent the early part of the evening watching TV in the west wing. About 7:30 my parents retired to the east wing and my neighbor and I remained for a while watching the Cowboys and the Eagles whip up on each other on a little while. Neither of us are big football fans so we locked up and he brought me home. Other than that it's been an uneventful day.

Sawyer, make sure your insurance is paid up at least through a couple of weeks after today (just in case...). Think you might've hurt you back because you held back in tackling your coach? Maybe you should have just tackled him like anyone else? Whistling

I tackled him hard as I could actually Jim, didn't hold anything back.

Well, we won the basketball game. I've discovered though that I love rugby and jsut have that mentality; don't like palying basketball anymore b/c there is ZERO physicallity in it.

Also, my back felt fine after I got warm in the game, so it's probably just a strained muscle.

TMarsh
My hats off to you Jeff, you do the best, and the most you can within the limits that you and no one else knows. Funny how there are so many people with no ailments doing less for the community and to be self sufficient.

Todd, there were a great many things I did in my youth that I wish I could do again. Among them are rock climbing, long distance hiking and stock car racing. Those were good times to be sure but now they're just memories that are the treasures of an old man no longer able to do such things. Still, once in a while I see a group of rock climbers on the TV and I get this urge to go climb El Capitan, again. I know full well I can't do it but for that moment I feel that anything is possible. Sure. there was a time when I felt I'd never be able to do anything again but over the years I learned my limits and for the most part there's nothing within those limits that I can't do if I put my mind to it. That included learning to walk again after the doctors told me I'd never be able to walk again. Sure, I couldn't walk far at first but I got to the point that I could do two or three miles at a stretch. That was a major accomplishment for me. Unfortunately I never could run again. The nerve damage was just too bad. Now, once again, I'm at a point where I can't walk very far but that's not going to keep me from doing so again. After my foot is healed I'll be building my muscles up again and try to get back to that two to three mile point. One thing my grandfather taught me was to let nothing stand in the way of your goal. There's always a way to overcome an obstacle. He died of cancer at the age of 61 but he didn't stop living every day to the full until the very last one. He spent the last two years of his life going to see all the places he'd wanted to visit during his lifetime. And as my father remarked about him once, that was one very determined Indian. My father can see the same determination in everything I do and he does what he can to help me achieve my goals.
