Good Evening All,

It's 14 here on the way to 6. Long day again in  the shop then off to HD for a pile of press treated 2x4 and untreated 2x3 for the basement walls. I'll put the 2x4's on the floor and use the inner edge to space the 2x3's out so I can make a layer of spray foam between the studs and stone/concrete wall. When we're done we'll put pegboard up in the woodw..k area and paneling in the exercise room.

Jeff - I was on this morning and saw what transpired. I just want to say how much I admired your well reasoned response and restraint. I suppose when someone drops in and doesn't know the whole story it should be forgiven, but I just see no excuse for the attitude that goes with the ignorance of your situation. I know you do a fraction of what you used to and I think you behave responsibly. Dark as things seem they can always be worse and all you can do is carry on as best you can.

With the go ahead from the CFO, I've started daydreaming about the shelf layout but I think I'll keep the sketches in my head until I have the actual shelf to build on. I still favor the concept of the yard and turntable but the specifics will remain in limbo for now.

I did catch bits of the Jets game earlier and I guess Dallas is on their way as well. I's good to see the Jets pull it out at the end of the season and stop the 4th quarter fades. If I can't root for the Giants, I guess the Jets will do for now.

Time to sit for a bit at the RC and have a nightcap. Best wishes and prayers for those in need.  Catch y'all later, J.R.

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

***Ray, enjoyed the link to the pics. Put the farm house & barn pic as the desktop background for the wife to see tomorrow.

***JR, what is your time frame for building the shelf?

Black EyeSeems I have bradycardia, which could mean a pace-maker ahead. Here I get the blood pressure under control and then this dang sarc decides to mess with my heart. I want to start the MP treatment which can stop heart disease and heal the heart, but now the wife thinks I should see a cardiologist first. Hope I live long enough to at least try the treatment.

Have a good night y'all.

 Good Morning,

well, we did get some of that predicted white stuff, but not as much as we thought we would. It is still sn*wing lightly. Quite a few people had to spend the night on the highways - not a nice way. All of Germany is now covered with sn*w, which is most unusual. I have not yet heard of any train problems this morning, but as Deutsche Bahn ran down on maintaining their sn*w fighting equipment, this is most likely to happen.

Flo, it´ll be just coffee for me this morning!

Yesterday was not really a good day for me in this forum - I had a bit of a row with another member that got off the right track. This chap has a certain provoking way, I just could not hold back (which I should have done).

Mark - see what happens when you don´t order your heating oil in time!  Great pic though!

Jeff - all I say is  Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up

Have a great day!

 Hi - it´s me again!

Chloe, may I have some of that hot chocolate Flip asked to be ready? Need to warm up a little. I had to go to my old house and clear the sn*w off the sidewalk. Took me 2 hours to do it, as there was a lot of wind drift, piling the sn*w up to 2 feet high. It still hurts quite a lot to see my old place - makes me feel really depressed. I am glad to be "home" now. Petra is preparing lunch and there is a nice smell coming from the kitchen. I am sorry, Chloe, shouldn´t have said that. No, please don´t tell Vinnie - I like his greaseburgers very much, in fact, I may have one right now, it is still time ´till lunch.

Pheeewey - that was a close one !

I am still pondering over my layout plans. Take a shoestring budget and cut in in half - that´s about as much I can spend on MRR. Does not really leave me with much choice, but armchairing is not enough to keep my sanity. I saw a track plan for a long and narrow shelf layout in another thread, I will check on this one as food for thought. The intriguing thing is the simplicity of the benchwork the builder is employing. Lumber is really expensive over here and the shelf brackets also cost a fortune. Heck - I still have to learn how to boil down my druthers...

Tomorrow will be a fun day - the GULAG is invited to a sports studio, as it was decided that we need exercise. Wonder whether that beautiful blonde will be with us?

Ulrich- Good morning! I would guess there are flooring companies near you. See if they have left overs.  When we put in new wood flooring we had about five long pieces [ about 8 feet long]. I have used them to make a second story for my layout and used bridge piers to get to the second level. Best of luck to you and Petra.

Wish you enough.

Flip                                  p.s. don't give Vinny my address-please.

Went over to my Aunt’s former house with my cousin and replaced a downspout yesterday. Boy that was fun in 20F weather.  I left there and went to the LHS then did some errands, got home right around 5pm.  The new neighbor behind me (we have 50 x 100 foot lots) decided to remodel his house and burn the waste material in a 55 gallon drum behind his house.  Now I don’t mind if people sit around a small fire in one of those small patio pit things with the screen on it.  But to stick 10ft lumber (old) and trash and burn it, then leave for the day I get concerned.  Ok I know the snow on the roof was extinguishing the sparks and embers that were landing on my house and I over reacted by calling the police non-emergency number. The dispatcher asked if it was a small patio burner with a screen cover, I said no it’s a 55 gallon drum with 10ft boards sticking out of the top and the crisp winter air smells like hot garbage. She set the phone down and dispatched the ladder company.  Fire was put out with a few shovel full’s of snow and everything was fine.  2 hours later the neighbors re-started the fire.  I called the police, 3 police cars and 2 fire trucks arrived, the fire department dumped the 55 gallon drum into the guys yard and smashed it, police I think gave the guy a ticket this time.

We get that kind of thing down here quite a bit. One guy had stripped his roof and dumped the old asphalt shingles into a shallow depression and set fire to them. To say that the fire was very hot is an understatement. The heat melted the siding on the neighbors house and set fire to several trees. Our fire dept and several other depts responded and after a three hour battle put the blazes out. After everyone left the stupid idiot went out and set it off again. By then the wind direction had changed and the heat set fire to some trees on the other side of the fire and ultimately set fire to his house. The house was saved with the exception of the new roof which was a total loss. The guy was issued several citations and to top it off his insurance company refused to pay for the damage. Would you believe he set the fire off again two days later. This time we put the fire out and filled the depression with Class B foam. That stuff soaks into everything it touches and basically inhibits any combustion. To my knowledge he was never able to get it to relight and had the depression filled in.

 Good morning diners.

Rob .... That does not sound good sat all regarding your heart. Sorry to hear about it.=

Cal Tom .... Were you close enough to feel that quake? I think you are far enough away so your yellowstones are not disturbed.

Last night I saw a guy for the first time in as few years. I had not heard about his motorcycle accident of 3 or 4 years ago. I was surprised to see he no longer has his entire left arm. He has a hook for a hand. Fortunately, he has recovered emotionally and can now joke about it. His sweatshirt says: "Winner of second place in chainsaw juggling contest." Seriously, you motorcycle fans need to remember how dangerous your machines can be. Be extremely careful. This guy was in a coma for a week after the wreck and nearly died. He's not a young guy at all.

Hpefully, the weather guessers are correct about the frigid temps leaving in about 2 days.

Morning ya'll, stack of chocolate chip pancakes for me.

It's 20 outside, and I've been spray-painting the chassis of a few BB cars PS hoppers I got. For some odd reason, the krylon stuff seems to work better when it's cold than when it's warm (remember the metal wheels?) So far got the EW hopper done, and going to go out at do the SCL/L&N one. While I'm doing the latter, I'll see if there is something for the N&W one.

Lee, as much as I doubt that fire could have caused something with all that snow, one can never be too careful. I don't even let space heaters go unattended.

Ulrich, dunno if there is a used market out there, but I tend to buy used stuff or kits alot. It's cheaper, and can usually give me something to do (actually, lots of the RTR has stuff to do to it, but it'll break before that happens).

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Chocolate chip pancakes? I still remember Ma Kettle's popcorn loaded self flipping flapjacks.Laugh

Good morning. It's a balmy 18 degrees and it's sunny. The high today will be 47 or so the weather guesser says. He hasn't been right yet but there's always the possibility of a miracle.

The major items on my schedule today are nothing, nothing and nothing. While I'm getting all that accomplished I may have time to clear off part of the layout and do some general house cleaning. There's a small pile of boxes and paper that have to go out in the trash plus the kitchen garbage has to go out as well. Since I can't make repeated trips out to the cans the cans will have to be brought inside then taken back out. Packing it up in trash bags is inadvisable because the door is too narrow (been there and done that) and will easily rip the bag. That will eliminate a lot of trips. I only have to set the cans at the rear of the trailer, my neighbor will collect them and take them out to the road as that is slightly beyond my ability at this point. I can do it if need be but my feet would be VERY sore afterward. I talked to my father yesterday about the car problem and he's making agreeable noises about having it fixed. To him that's much easier than keeping one of his ready for use at a moments notice plus mine is set up for me to drive easily.

 Good Afternoon,

Zoe, as it is deep n´ dark over here, may I order a sundowner, please - you make the choice!

I seem to have a mental block. Spend the whole afternoon in front of a piece of paper, armed with a ruler and a pencil, to draw up a first idea on that shelf layout. Nothing, just nothing - the piece of paper is still white n´ clean.

Ideas, ideas - a kingdom for ideas?

Rob - I am sorry to hear about your hear issue - my Angel for you!

I guess we need to attach the chapel car again - for all those in need of healing prayers!

Well, I have finished my drink, paid my bill - will be back tomorrow!

Good morning all.  Just coffee and bowl of oatmeal for me please.  Need to loose the holiday over eating.  It's warmed up all the way to 10 F.  They are talking bout highs above freezing by mid week.  Still to cold to work on the layout in the garage.

We got the tree out and decorations put away last weekend so now there is space in the living room for model building on the craft table.  My dear wife does not mind if its left out as long as it's some what contained.  Both of us are comfortable with a house that looks like somebody actually lives there.  (not as bad as the hoarders on TV, but not like a model home.)

Jeff, I admire your attitude.  I know lots of folks with problems that aren't ever close to as bad as yours who just whine "poor me, poor me", then I hear people like you with real problems who just find a way to go on with their lives.  Hang in there.

Prayers for all who have needs, and thanks for our blessings.

 Jim

Rob, I can identify with your problem. I've never had a heart attack myself but being a severe diabetic I run the same risk of having one as someone who's already had one or two. I have to keep my blood pressure under control and keep my stress levels down as well. It's hard sometimes but it can be done.

Good Morning. Biscuits and gravy please. Yup, coffee too thank you.

Saw the Chapel car is hooked up so I stopped in there first. I don't think I need to list the prayer recipients. You know who you are. Angel

Boy is it cold out there. Don't know what the temp was this morn but the way my truck started, I don't want to know. Brenda went to Moms house to show it to someone who called Mom and is interested in the house. They must be to have found her in Springfield. I guess it wouldn't really be that hard now that I think of it. These are people who expressed great interest in wanting the place several years ago when she sold a rental house to them. Apparently they still are interested. For some reason my Mother doesn't want me to be there. She trusts Brenda to show it more than me. I'm thinking of holding that against here come Mothers Day.

Feeling somewhat light headed today so I don't know what I'll end up doing. Hopefully the train room will be included in my days activities. I'm rearranging some track at the grain elevator to come in from a different direction. My plan is to remove the loop in the center and come in more straight from the right. This should work better, and allow for YET ANOTHER EXPANSION!! The peninsula that has the "Town With No Name" will be extended to the right to the right end of the center peninsula after it is removed.

Maybe I should just scan a revised drawing.

This head cold, as Brenda calls it, or sinusitis, as I like to call it because I have no fever, is firing back up. Best get some more coffee.

Have a Great Day!!!

Afternoon folks!

Had to be at Church a bit early this morning as I was on the program to do a Moment for Mission.  I have done a MFM for several years now for the Martin Luther Committee.  My Church is a big supporter of the work we do in the community and we have 3 of our members on the Committee.  I read a statement from one of our committee members who was a scholarship winner over 2 decades ago telling how the award began a major change in her life.  She now has a Master's Degree and works at a School for "Problem" Children (Hillside).  My DIL is a teacher in the same facility and works with the lady.  Went over very well....

Zoe, I'll have cup of hot chocolate and a Toasted Cheese and bowl of Tomato soup for lunch.  THAT ought to warm me up a bit!  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

I see the Chapel Car is outside.  My prayers to all of you who are in need for healing and strength!

Just got a call from my son who wants to borough the truck for a little while this afternoon.  Says he is bringing my oldest Granddaughter over so she can play THomas the Train with Grandpa.......  So I'll be back later!

 Afternoon folks!

I see we have a new face here......  Running Nose?  I hear he is somehow related to another guy in here... Running Bare?????? WhistlingWhistlingLaugh

Flo I'll partake of what Grayfox is having.  I am officially tired out for the day.  Spent a little over 2 hours watching (playing) with Olivia (Granddaughter #1).  Man was she a ball of fire!  We of course started by getting out Thomas:

Then we played "catch me if you can".  My house has a circle for a hallway and you can run around and around through the kitchen, dining room, and then past the bedrooms and bath again and again.  She would "run away" and then I have to try to catch her.  Then Grandpa had be the horsey for rides....  She helped me take down the Christmas candle lights I have been avoiding getting put away, and then back to:

for a while more......  My son needed to use my pick up truck (Anacrusis) to haul some boxes over to the storage unit they have.  Hoping my 2010 tag arrives early this week for the trailer.  As soon as it comes in, I will deliver a pile of used sound equipment to the school, and then my son can start to get stuff packed into the trailer as the storage unit is now full.

My son and his wife will be closing on a house and their old house sometime in the next week and a half.  At THAT time they may only have 2 days to get everything moved....

BTW, my great grandmother was half Seneca.  Unfortunately she was my "Step" great grandmother.  In my mothers family her heritage was usually shared in whispered tones even though she was the favorite grandmother in the family........  I might have been 1/16th. Native American..........Wink  I am a member of the Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts (Vigil Honor).  Our Clan is turtle (after "Handsome Lake").  Yeah, I know THAT doesn't really count.............

Later!

It's warmed up here to 42. Finally something above freezing. I've lived in parts of the country where it gets really cold in the winter, that's why I live way down here in Louisiana now. Looks like the cold front is lifting a bit. The low tonight is projected at 23 and the lows will be getting warmer throughout the week. High tomorrow is supposed to be 54.

Afternoon/Evening Janie - I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich, bowl of chil, a glass of milk and a RBF for dessert, please. Thanks!

What with all the chili that they've been selling here in the Diner lately, yesterday when I got groceries, I decided to get the fixings for chili, and then after dinner last night, made up some and put it in containers (1 in the fridge for tonight and the other in the freezer for later). Dinner

Keith, we're supposed to soak the cork? Oops Well, ya learn something new every day in the DIner. Oh, speaking of cork, when I was at H-L yesterday, I spotted a roll of cork (3/32" X 2' X 4') that - I think I'm recalling this right - cost $12.99 or $14.99 for the roll. I'll have to go check my remaining cork when I get back home this evening and see if that's about the same thickness or not. And Keith, if that price is better than Midwest (or whoever)'s price for cork yard sheets, it could be less costly and deaden the sound for your station yard area.

Markpierce - thanks for the shots of the snowplows, and Sign - Welcome back to the Diner! I recall you'd been by a few times before, right?

Barry, you may have found the last of the HO cars in Wally's Place. Our stores in Cape or Jackson (just down the road) only have Matchbox or larger cars any more. Sigh I liked it when they'd have those Fresh Cherry or other HO scale cars every so often (particularly when they'd have 1950's era cars!). That other WallyWorld thing was indeed just bizarre... Lucky for you that the cement mixer got by that train, or there'd have been pieces flying all over and might've hit your car. Shock Hey, congratulations on findng the macro button (they aren't all placed where it's obvious to tell...)

howmus
Barry, hope you got a plate number and reported it!!!!

Ray, at first I thought that you were referring to your previous line, also. T'was, if you had been... Whistling But I now realize you were more likely talking about Barry's near-miss at the crossing. Hey, sounded like you had a good meet - looking forward to any pics that you may get from other attendees/presenters. Ah, I see you posted the first installment (link). And I was (one of) the one(s) who asked about your flat cars. Thumbs Up

Jeff, can you send me a couple of pints of your blood? I'd like to provide an infusion of your "I might not be able to do all I used to, but I ain't done yet" attitude for some clients I at times see at w**k, who are still in that earlier phase you mentioned (feeling "Since I can't do everything, then what use am I?"). A person's attitude is probably one of the most important factors we each have going for us. (IMHO) Thumbs UpThumbs Up to you!

Rob, keep taking care of yourself, attending to each step as you move along the process. Pulling for you. AngelAngel

Flip, I was watching the Weather Channel while I was out eating pizza last night, and it was amazing what all you (and parts south of you, even) were getting hit with there. Wow!! They were talking about how most places in Florida don't have heat (I'd guess almost none), and were telling Floridians without heat in their homes to get to a shelter if at all possible(!). Stay warm there until it gets back to your more usual weather.

Careful there, Ulrich - you'll wind up with a headache (after Petra learns about the blonde and bonks you with the rolling pin from the kitchen! Black EyeDead I overheard Chloe asking Vinnie to track down your home phone for her... Depending on how heavy N scale stuff is, it's possible you might be able to use metal shelf brackets and save some wood in building the support benchw**k. Where was the shelf layout you mentioned? I might want to steal look at it. Yeah!! How close are you to Denmark's border there? (I was noticing the European temps and weather while I was watching that Weather Channel, too)

Lee - do you think your neighbor has figured out yet about the burning ordinances locally? Smile,Wink, & Grin Good thing it was wintertime!  And Jeff, I'd say your neighbor is tied with Lee's neighbor for a possible Darwin award runner-up. (Well, they both did survive their stupid choices...) Whistling

Awrighta! Barry's joining the 20th century (we're shooting for the 21st by June for him)! (Hee, hee.. just kidding ya, guy) Smile,Wink, & Grin

We're supposed to reach 35 F tomorrow - and maybe have some flurries with it (but no accumulation, at least). Wow!!

Here's what I did yesterday after all my errands. Ray might recognize the starting point of these:' And I didn't have to haul out the Optivisor to do these, either! Now when I go back to add some highlights on some (like on the hedgehog...), I probably will need it. Hoping to maybe finish the basic coats of paint on these later tonight, and perhaps start on the 'wood' framing for the Delaney Transfer building.

I'll be at the corner booth, kicking back for a bit before I head home. Janie, have somebody nudge me if I fall asleep... But not Vinnie - his 'nudges' are a bit more forceful!

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Ray might recognize the starting point of these:

Ah yes!  Yes I do, and I definitely used my optivisor when painting several of them......  There are 2 of the critters in this photo...  Can you find them?

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I know I'm not the only one here with health challenges. Just want to stay around as long as possible, as there is a RR empire to build and some special needs critters who rely on me for their care. While I'm here, I'll have a bowl of veggie with chicken soup, please.

Jim, those sure are tiny little things. Can't believe you can do those without magnification. My wife will be adding a number of cats to Bubble's shed in her trailer park. (anyone who has watched Trailer Park Boys will understand)

Still breaking ice here, but tomorrow it warms up well above freezing and my life will become easier once more. Wife had to take off from work again tonight as well because of our local roads (hills & bridges).

Haven't made it down into the train room lately. I keep toying with the idea of switching scales and just adding on to the wife's HO layout for my ideas. IF I ever did that, I would keep my favorite few N trains and do the forced perspective thing so I could still run them along the wall. Main problem with switching (besides the potential cost) would be the difference in height between the current shelf and the wifes lowland layout. More of a dream right now than something I will likely do, as I would need to get healthier before undertaking something like that.

Hi ,y'all . Youse dang yankees puhleeze keep your c c cold weather where it belongs. North of the Mason-Dixson line. Going down below freezing again tonight. Ice in birdbath melted slightly but still thick.. Yes Jim, many older homes do not have heat altho some have fireplaces. Firewood is readily available sold by home owners as well as regular stores. We have reverse cycle a/c-heat and it is a blessing. When I leave for work in the a.m. the temp. will be about 30f. Good thing vehicle has a good heater.  Almost time for shower and bed. Our prayers for all and wish you all enough.

The biggest part of any recovery from say partial paralysis is having an obtainable goal to work toward. Physical therapy helps a lot but the mental therapy has to be there too. If the person is thinking 'I'll never be able to do that' then they're not going to even try in most cases. My mental therapy was simply 'There's no way I'm gonna be stuck in this darned chair for the rest of my life'. From there it was easier to relearn to do simple tasks and build up to more complex tasks. With my degree of nerve damage it wasn't easy to walk an 1/8 of a mile but I did it. It took me almost a year to get to that point.
