But Ray, you DO know a lot.....

Thank your sir!  But I think THAT depends on who you talk to......Whistling  (Got told by someone in a forum across the street that I am only a 'Music Teacher' so I don't know anything about something I have been doing professionally for 15 years.......  I'm not even going to respond to him. Not worth it.... Made the mistake of offering a suggestion on monitor settings.  My first teaching job had a sign in the main office saying, "When arguing with an idiot, make sure he is not similarly occupied". Wink

Zoe I'll have a bowl of tomato soup and a toasted cheese sandwich.  Guess a Dr. Pepper would go nicely.

I'm about out the door to drive over to Victor to the Mac Store.  I tried resetting the PRAM to see if THAT would reset the system.  No dice still the "blue screen of death with the flashing question mark....  maybe they can do something to get it back in operation.  I'm thinking that I must have left it on and then shut down everything in the train room and in the process screwed up the old laptop royally.  We shall see.Sigh

When I get back home, I can spend most of the rest of the day with the layout.  (THAT would be nice!)

Afternoon ya'll

Found out why the AC isn't working right. The guy who had the car before me cut the vacuum line to the AC reserve canister. I keep getting cars that have been worked on by people who don't know what they are doing...

Bama, I though about getting a few of the bachmann SD40-2s, I figure it'd run pretty well since I had several FT that were good runners. My only issues with the BN ones is that they numbers on the long hood are too big, and the roadname and logo under the cab is too small; I would get several if I knew how to do decal work, because the athearn, kato, and BLI ones get expensive. I will give them kudos for getting the paint scheme and trim right; something that even Atlas, BLI, P2K, Athearn Genesis, and Kato keep messing up on.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I checked with some places this morning that do the kind of mechanical work I need done. So many places these days 'specialize' which translates to ridiculous prices. The two lowest (least ridiculous) were for $680 and $470. Naturally I'm going with the lower one. They say they'll be able to get to it Thursday. They insist on using all new parts an dI agree with them. I used a rebuilt master cylinder last time and here it's failed about a year later. Also went to see the foot doc this morning. The wound is down to 5 mm in depth, the swelling is gone and there;s no heat. All indications that the antibiotics are doing their job. Until my car is back on the road I'm having to use my father's old F150. It doesn't have the equipment that my car has so it's a bit more difficult to drive but I'll manage. I'm very tired today so I don't see much else getting done.

I have been running the electric ice dam melters on the roof during the last couple of days to open up a path for water as the snow melts.
I have to do it the old fashioned way, with a roof rake and I am glad it was the light powdery stuff.

Hey guys, sorry I didn't get INTO the diner earlier...  I was working out back  SWWWOOOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!!!THWAP!!!!OUCH!!!

Whipering in a hushed voice while cleaning off whipped cream: I have been working on a new device... "Instant Ground-To-Air High Velocity Full Edible Tray Machine"  (Highly technical description of "Pie Catapult") but SHHHH... Don't tell anyone, especially Chloe, or she'll have my head as a special!!!

Hey Chloe!  How are you today??? What was that noise?  Oh, nothing, just me attempting to fix an old machine I brought with me... NO, I'm afraid you can't see it...

Anyway, thanks for the compliments on the wedding photos... a lot of hard work went into the planning of it... MOST of it done by my beautiful bride!

Phillip- Sue and I will be praying for you guys...

Der- Thanks for the idea about the brackets being larger on the bottom to support the weight, I will definitely be using that theory here!

""When arguing with an idiot, make sure he is not similarly occupied". " Howmus

Ray- I sometimes forget that very important bit of knowledge!!!Duh

BTW... "WHAT is your FAVORITE COLOR?"   "UM, Blue. NO! I mean Yellow!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhh.......lol

I had a good day today, got my eight hours in at w*rk...  my qualifying partner and I have found a couple of good engineers to ride along with.  They quiz us on the territory, so that should help quite a bit!

Jeff- Just goes to show you that some people just haven't got the correct wiring in their heads to connect what few braincells they have left!!!  Although, it seems he knows how to draw a crowd! LOL

NittanyLion-  Good luck on the layout!  Please take photos and share, if possible???  I always like seeing other peoples layouts coming together!

Which reminds me... I told my wife that I am glad we ordered the SW1500, as it is a sound equipped loco (my first one)... She got this crinkled look on her face and said "Uh-Oh... what have I done???"  To which I responded that I wanted to upgrade my DCC control from the Bachman EZ-Command to Digitrax Zephyr.  She said that sounded like a good idea!!!

Well, I'll be in the corner booth, if not there I'll be out back again... Got some net surfin' to do, gonna find me a Zephyr and reel it in!!!

 Afternoon folks.

Not too much is going on; school, friends, rugby, layout.

I have decided to swap out a switch, which I will probably do this weekend. the plan is to cut the old one out (the track is soldered and four joiners have feeder wires) and solder the new one into place. I'll hold it in place with track nails and then solder the rails to the old one. We'll see though.

Afternoon guys. Chloe, can I get a bacon cheeseburger and some Dr. Pepper, please?

Geez, haven't been in in a while. Went to a friends on Friday, had a late game on Saturday, and tons of homework on Sunday.
We also had a game last night. I got ROCKED! Opened my eyes, had no clue where I was. "Ok, there's ice, so we must be at a game. Ok..." Actually, for the first time, I wasn't sure if I was even gonna get up (I've been hit A LOT, but never this bad...)... After getting up and back to the bench, I felt fine-- Or so I thought. After the game, I felt like crap. Got home, showered, and asleep at 9:30 (which NEVER happens). But I woke up this morning and felt fine (except for being extremely tired), so I guess that's good.

Got the first exam tomorrow-- band. The concert was 75% of the grade, and I already played the scales and stuff, so all I have left is the writing portion (yes, somehow, that actually exists in band...?)
And the "real" exams are next week. Monday is reading day, which is optional, Tuesday is algebra and spanish, Wednesday is theo and chem, and Thursday is history and english. Friday is makeups, so I'll be off, unless I miss a day.

In MRR news, I finally got to run my centerbeam for a while-- BUT. I took it out of the box, ran it for a bit, fine. Went to start painting it, since it will only need the numbering covered, since it's already green. After the paint is already on, I see it's broken. In the SAME PLACES as the first one. Yup, the ladders and the floor. So they're gonna get a call tomorrow afternoon... Can't send this one back now, but I'm gonna find out what's up with this...

I'll shut up for now...

Jeff,  all your pics look so nice.  Now as far as 'google' hyjacking' my toolbar~  gheeesh.. I finally got it.  With Vista.. on the very top far right there is a black arrow.. wow.. that took some time.   Ok... I said I'd post a few pics with some liners on it.. so here it is.. lol.100_0646.jpg picture by Blazzin55

I must admit, one main idea that I wanted was to be able to pick up.. add to the line.. or drop off.. and take away freight.  I'm happy.100_0643.jpg picture by Blazzin55

Now this pic.. I hope says more.  But in the very back.. the line(s)  that go into the tin shed 'repair house'.. each line holds five liners deep inside the mountain.. for storage.    Thats it.   Keith

Afternoon folks.... (almost evening, maybe it is....)

Chloe just a cup of decafe to warm me up a bit.  I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a few minutes at least.

Took the old 12" G4 antique laptop over to the Mac store and talked with the owner.  Explained what I had done to get it up an running.  he nodded his head in agreement for the process.  After I told him Disk Warrior couldn't find a Hard Drive.  He said, "Well.....  I can pretty much say that you have a dead HD if Warrior can't find it. Would have cost close to $400 for repairs if they indeed could fix it.  When Macs die, they DIE!  This one certainly doesn't owe me anything as it was used "on the road" for DJ for several years and is now very, very dated.  Looked over the "On Consignment" corner they have and didn't find anything THAT turned me on or would come close to fitting in the space I have for it.  There was a fairly new iMac for $575......  I took the plunge and bought a new entry level little tiny Mini Mac for $599.  Comes with 2 Gig of Ram (can support up to 4 Gigs of DDR3 SDRAM, 160 Gb HD, one Firewire 800 port and 5 USB 2.0 ports, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth, 8x slot loading Superdrive, and Mac OSX Snow Leopard preinstalled.  Also got a small wired keyboard (basically a laptop type of keyboard with no keypad) which will fit perfectly on the little table I have for the computer in the layout room.  By the time I left I was about $700 poorer, but hey its only money, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Right now I am transferring all the setup data, programs, and user data from my new laptop onto the Mini.  Sure makes it slick to get oit up and running.  I will have all my internet settings, photos, etc. all set on my Mini when I plug it in downstairs.  Only thing I won't have is one program I was using the old laptop for...... Softrack Inventory.  I will have to spend several hours retyping all the info for my Locos, cars, and such into the Mini.  Lucky i have the program itself on the G5 as the back-up and will be able to transfer the program at least so I won't have to pay for it again.

The data transfer is about 1/3 done.  has been going for about 45 minutes.  Since the Laptop doesn't have Firewire 800 and the Mini doesn't have Firewire 400, I have to use the Ethernet connection which even at 1000 Base T is slower......

Kieth I like what you have so far!  You are going to have a great layout there.

Dratted computers... I had a complete post ready to go, just about to add a smiley and the thing froze and told me that IE stopped working, then it self refreshed erasing all my writing... Maybe it got cream on it...

Here goes AGAIN...

Keith, loving the pics...  Wondering about your "Storage Tracks", are you going to have a specific track for each car?  I thought that if you used a magnetic dry erase board, you could have each "Liner" on its own little magnet, and thus know where all your stored Liners are at a glance.

Ray- Hope everything has gone well with the transfer, to this point (if not complete)... I am still amazed by your flatcars, I don't think I could have done that.  I don't have enough patience to hand paint/stain each board.   Great job!

Joe- Hope you are feeling alright?  Concusions can be tricky... stay safe!  Good luck getting answers for the centerbeam...

Barry- Sorry about the cream, I thought I got it all up...  I have a new name for the "Machine"

**Instant Ground-To-Air High Velocity Dessert Ejector**  What do you think?

Just don't tell Chloe, Flo, or Vinnie?!?!?!?! Thanks

Evenin' folks!

Zoe, Boston Cream Pie and a cup of decafe and tell those guys to put away the new delivery system, I want to be able to eat the pie not wear it......

Barry, I have a 1Tb HD as a second drive in the G5, a 1Tb HD containing backup and all my AAIF files for DJing and a 500Gb backup for the G5 THAT doesn't want to start all the time..... I have just about given up on LaCie external HDs as this is the 3rd. one that has failed on me in 10 years or so......Whistling  Everything that was on the external is on the 1Tb second drive in the G5 now.  I have about 2.4 Tb of hard drive space here.  Should do me for a while I think. Big Smile

Transfer is complete.  All went well.  i have been sitting and fiddling with some stuff on the new computer.  Which is why I'm back over here at the G5, I am getting ready to export vCards over to the Mini so I can get the Address Book updated with addresses I have on this machine and not on the Laptop.  Thank you for your kind words about the Flat Cars.  One of these days I will get around to build some loads for them and finish weathering them.

Back to w**k!

That's one of the prime reasons I quit using IE and went to Firefox. One thing I've found to be very helpful in typing up long posts. I type it up in Notepad then copy and paste it into the reply box. If something happens I can just copy and paste again without having to redo everything.

Evening all, good news!  I now have a new power cord for the laptop, so this post is from home!  Not much else happening tonight, going to be watching some TV, messing around on here and if I can find the camera, getting some pictures of my rolling stock that I'm going to be willing to part with.  Well, guess I'm going to be finding some paint and decals for both the GP40-2 and the SD40-2.  Oh well, it makes for good practice.

I'll take a hot ham and cheese with a large RBF and plant myself here at the RC.

Evening again. Zoe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

Yeah Sam, I'm fine. Nothing this time, but thanks for asking. I had a bad one back in lax season last year; that was awful...
And looking back a few posts, glad to hear the qualifying is going well!!

Keith, that's looking good! And sorry I forgot, but what scale is that?

Well, I'm still really tired, and I got that exam tomorrow, so, believe it or not, I'm actually gonna be hittin' it relatively soon...

Night!

Good evening everybody! Chilly tonight, but not as bad as it was last year IIRC. A hot chocolate please Chloe, I'll be over at the Rivet Counter...if i qualify ....Mischief

I'd like to officially apply for an Elliot's Trackside Diner Rivet Counter Occupancy Permit (ETDRCOP)  I based my scratch built interlock tower  on  a prototype one  posted in the Diner way back  Since finishing the two new towers, I've been bothered that something wasn't "right", compared to that first one. So, I've been mulling over mullions. I compromised with the windows of the scratchbuild, having no mullions at all  on the lower window, and just a central vertical one in the upper. The new towers have vertical mullions in both upper and lower windows. That's a whole mess of mullions, and it looks "dated" compared to the scratchbuilt one - IMHO. Removing the  lower mullion in each window of both towers took only about an hour this afternoon. That's thanks to the "peel and stick" construction of these Laser wood kits. Just pop out the whole window, cut the mullions, remove the glazing with the mullions attached, replace new glazing using the adhesive still intact on the frame, and pop the whole window back. Press tight, and repeat for all windows. Result, a cleaner look , at least that's my impression. Can I sit at the Rivet Counter now, please?

Now, so long as the dragonfly larbe survive. Back when I was teaching elementary art, I learned that not only do the adult dragonflies eat the  adult mosquitoes, but the dragonfly larvae eat the mosquito larvae, too. Yeah, I love dragonflies!!
...From observation of the critters dredged up from the bottom of the ornamental pond in our yard, all that larval survival / eating goes on under water, and in our case under the ice! From the looks of the dragonfly larvae, the dragon in dragonfly could well come from the fearsomeness of the former!Evil

Ulrich:

Too many switches, unless I have the chance to handlay them.

That would be WAY cheaper, and if you have the skills I'd say go for it, because making them would, I think, be totally absorbing; taking your mind off other matters - even small beagles - and thus be excellent therapy!

Should I venture into N scale, I´ll need to find out how much detail is necessary for that.
...quick answer, I've read where  anything not easily visible from a distance of 91 cm ( 3' LOL) is un-necessary. That said, the 3' varies depending how close to the layout you happen to be standing!
Barry - oh, no, not again. I thought we had left the catapult at the old location, now it is here again. Was it Todd who sneaked it in? Don´t let Vinnie know - he still has got that good argument against catapults and throwing pies - made by Messrs. Smith & Wesson.
...and there I thought that the needlepoint in question was for handling small parts in assembly of N Scale kits!

PC: Prayers for your wife in that gastric bypass surgery...obviously you y'all have done the research and I like that others of her side of the family have met with success with this. Angel

...sounds like a job for SuperGandy! Laugh

Keith: Looking good! You've got a lot of space for all that passenger gear. Thumbs Up

Joe: That centerbeam sounds like a real - well - bust! I think they should just refund your cash when you send it back. Try a different brand, if the model is available by someone else?

Sam: ditto Jeff's tip on writing in Notepad (I use WORD, but it's the same idea)  Saves a lot of agro, but isn't always enough, like when I click in Preview on a link I haven't made "New Window" and don't notice. Moving back to Preview loses the whole thing Banged Head - BUT the original is still in WORD, so can be re-posted and played with.

Looks like it's that time again, so Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Two of our 3 computers have been sick with a virus. I got this one back and cleared again. Time for the next. I think there should be more punishment for the virus writing idiots. The unainfected computer has Ubuntu OS instead of Microsoft.

I hope to have half of my Stewart FT's (an AB set) together in a few days. The stripes are time consuming. I hope to complete the other AB set in a couple of weeks so I can have the full ABBA diesel ready for the layout.

Watch out for JimCG sneaking in teh side dorr again.

Good Even...ah, I guess we'll make THAT Good Morning...

Wow, lots went on in here I see... If nothing else, at least I know why I slipped on the whipped cream on the floor...somebody must've missed a spot... It also explains the strange contraption sitting out back.

JOE: Yeah, sounds like a mild concussion to this former medic... better take it easy for a day or two, and get yer butt seen by a doc if things change 'eh? Clonks to the head aren't something to take lightly...especially when they start to accumulate. Also, was you the one who keeps getting broken centerbeam flats from Walthers?? I forgot for sure...side-effect of getting clonked in the head several times over 40 years... If so, what's breaking? Is it something a little plastic welding cement would fix? Any chance you could tack up a pic of it? I'm getting more and more curious on this.

TRAINMAN SAM: Sounds like you're really getting the hang of being...well, a TRAINMAN. Congrats again on THAT.

DER JOHN: THAT tower is amazing... Hey, what's with asking to sit at the RC?? I thought you already had a charter membership! Smile,Wink, & Grin As if your magnificent modeling wasn't enough, the tar trailer shoulda sealed THAT deal...

PC: I'll add to the well-wishes THAT the surgery goes well, the desired results achieved. My "nice" SIL had THAT done a few years ago...made a tremendous difference for her.

JEFF: Tough deal on the car...believe me when I say "I feel your pain." All three of our vehicles broke down/needed something fairly significant in the past year. Not fun. We sank just about every dime we could scrape up a few weeks back for critical w**k on my truck. No sir, not fun at all.

KEITH: You know what I like best about your pics with the "Liners"??? The YELLOW and GREEN Liners!! Thumbs Up CNW, "The Route of the Streamliners." Bow

SAWYER: Sounds like you'll be playing section gang this weekend, good luck on the switch change-out.

I'll yield the floor, it's about time to attempt unconsciousness... later today, I'll be editing/processing basketball photos, trying to come up with a clever yet concise game report; and hopefully getting some call-backs on a story Mr. Boss wants me to do.

Hoping everybody has a good, SAFE day...best wishes to all in need.

 Good Morning Everyone,

Egad, what have I started here? It was poor old me, who brought up that issue with that catapult. Barry and Todd, would you please stop

Swoooosh, thudddd, schppprootz

Now, Barry, was that really necessary? How can I now get my glasses clean again?

OK, Janie, it is coffee for me and I will also help you clean up the mess Barry made.

Scio, nescio - I know nothing - does that earn me a seat at the RC?

 Have a good day!

Good morning all,

I believe it was a European swallow.

Keith, it’s very prototypical of you to have a mess of tracks next to a major passenger terminal.  Detroit, Toledo, and other major hub cities had sorting tracks for van trains and express cars that would get tagged onto various passenger trains.  This was especially true when the RR was making more money on express freight that passenger service.  Toledo had several SW units scampering around with freight cars between passenger train arrivals, not to mention “turning” the locomotives and RPO.

No burn barrel fires yesterday, I guess the new owner didn’t want the building inspector in the house to see what’s going on.  He will still have to go through a final inspection when he is done.  Looks like he has the entire kitchen down to bare studs.

Good morning. It's 27 and clear. The high is due to be 57 and cloudy.

Got the car back from the first shop yesterday. The steering works great now but the brake system still has to be fixed. No news yet on when I need to take it to the next shop. They were ordering the parts yesterday and expect them to be in today. If so I may be able to get it in before the end of the week. The hardest part of the job for them will be bleeding the master cylinder. It's an ABS type and it's a mother to bleed. Hopefully I should have it back on the road by the middle of next week at the latest. On the layout front, I worked on one of my Athearn GP38-2' yesterday. It had exhibited some hesitation the last time it was run and I wanted to know why. The problem turned out to be a loose wire on the rear truck.
