Good Morning. Happy January 20th, nasty out there. By the way what's the pile of wood for out back? We building a layout? Frozen fog and freezing rain this morning, it‘s gonna be.....WOW!!!! What is that wonderful smell!!!! What ho! I‘ll take a piece of Petra‘s delicious, uh, er...., whatever that is. Ah! Apple cake. Mmmmmmmm!

Was going in to see Mom but I believe I'll wait until after noon. Let some of the yuckies get off the road. No, I don't mean the ice and slush slick yuckies, I mean the other nut bomb pea brained driver yuckies.

Trudgeing away at the track adaption/renovation. I'll like this better. I won't have the diagonal through town, I'll like that the best. Of course that means the passenger station will return to it's original locationBlack Eye. The approach for the meat packers will come in from the other side and off the main. I've also decided that where the passenger station was, I'll still use the corner grass with the old cart on a pad decoration thing. I can keep this corner by leaving one section of track at that location and put an old caboose there as a historical building for the town. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but Williamsville has a couple of GM&O boxcars placed side by side and attached they use as a Williamsville Historical Museum. Pretty neat. I'll just use a caboose.

I tell you what, I used to sit and wonder why everyone takes so long to decide on a track plan. I'm kinda like Keith, I need to see progress or I go a bit nutso, when I want a train I want one now, not in 6 mo to a year. But now I see why..... Now I see why.Banged Head

Sam- I liked the first sketch the best. I'm not a big switcher, but I do like to have things to do.

Philip- A belated congrats to your better half. I'm sure she also is breathing a sigh of relief. Now we'll pray she heals well and the procedure works. By the way, we also have a hospital with great food, Memorial Medical Center has great food. I wouldn't call it Chef Ryan great, but it's as good as any restaurant. Now the other "horsepiddle" , now THAT'S a horse of a different color. (or colour for our buddies to the north). I don't know how they expect you to get well when they are constantly trying to kill you with the food.

Jim- Sorry, I talk confusing if I don't have some sort of example. I'll make a rough draft of the revised edition # 3,489 and post it soon. I might could use a few suggestions.

tbdanny- WelcomeSign - Welcome to the diner! I'm Todd, Todd the Rambler. I ramble on. Feel free to skim through my posts, no hard feelings I understand. White chocolate cheesecake and Orange juice..... Yup you got the hang of it. No combination of sweets and acids will give you a pucker here. Nor is anything fattening or "Not on my diet". Layouts are built, torn down and dreamed about. No arguments, put downs or "critiques" of railroads . Just laughs, concerns and suggestions based on our opinions. No right or wrong for you as I see it. This IS the grass on the other side of the fence, and it IS greener. Oh I see you've already noticed. I think you will enjoy it here.

Jeff- Hey, at least you don't have to sport a bag of maggots on the ole hoof. Don't know how that'd do for healng, but it'd sure keep the wound clean. Still.........creepy. I know what you mean on the cell phones. The last one I got, a Razor which was supposed to be junk but has functioned flawlessly for oh, I don't know since shortly after they came out, the book was thicker than my dictionary and full of stuff I couldn't care less about. Had to weed through a lot of crap to find the couple things I wanted. All I wanted was a phone that I didn't have to push a button to talk on and wasn't so small it would get lost in my pocket. That's what I was left with at the time.Grumpy

Lee- I was thinking more of grinding/filing the motor shaft a flat spot and drilling a corresponding tapped hole in the tube.Use a tiny screw as a set screw and El Segundo! (since we're speaking Spanish) And easily separated too, should the need arise.

Ray- See? If you had a PC instead of a MAC, the program would turn Danny's posts right side up for you.Tongue

Well, I must get a move on if I want to see the train room before I head out.

Anybody heard from Inch? Haven't seen him since I made the crack about the jewelry. Hope he didn't think I was serious. Wife got her stuff and it looked great. It's just I hate to see the mini tribe of the same cacklers trading houses to get their free or discounted party "thanks you's ". I must say it was better than this last "get rich quick so I can quit my job and do this forever at my leisure" scheme one of them has with Tupperware.

Have a Great Day!!!

EDIT:   WAIT!!!! No! I have nothing against Tupperware or the fine folks who sell it. Just this bunch. Brenda doesn't try to sell stuff she just books parties to help her friends get started in there latest sure fire thing. Then the rest of the circle does the same. Unfortunately, they never seem to extend past the Great Circle of Cacklers, they get disgusted because they make not the promised fortune and ultimately quit, and move on to the next item. Bizarre.

Good morning,

We've got ICE... Weather speculationists raised the level of alarm from a "freezing rain advisory" (Ok...we were "advised") to a "Ice Storm Warning." The college closed, so Loving Wife gets to stay home, which makes Rerun very happy (oh, and me too). My school board meeting for tonight has been postponed to Monday night, which makes me happy....THAT won't be, she may have a hole to fill now for content. I had an interview lined-up for tomorrow evening...THAT just fell-through, so Mr. Boss may be a bit unhappy. The message I got said "...the owners want to reschedule..." so....kinda out of my hands, ya know?

ULRICH: "Analysis paralysis." Good term, I think THAT's part of my problem, well THAT and the financial aspects of it all. Hang in there Pal, sooner or later we'll have our empires. THAT apple cake looks really really tasty, by the way.

Welp, lunchtime, then it'll be time to...do something productive for THAT.

Have a good, SAFE afternoon,

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a BLT, some cheesey fries (and the bottle of ketchup), a dill pickle slice, bowl of chili and a RBF, please. Thanks - I figured I might as well have some toast, since that appears to be the rage lately in here. Wink

Chris, that sounds like a good idea on that city, since you have access to city plans. Just change it to somewhere in the CNW's territory! Yeah!! Sounds like Mr. Murphy had it in for your BBQ grill outside of the ER...Sad

Jeff, is your foot that the vaccuum's on going to be stronger once you get to take it off? Or are you keeping some weight on the other foot to keep things balanced? Wink

Ulrich, that looks yummy! What tasty ingredients are in it (forget any nutritional stuff, 'cause I don't want that to spoil my appetite...Wink)? Just remind yourself - "Spring is coming, spring is coming..." Ah, I see you answered - heck, if it has apples in it, plus the Calvados, as well - definitely okay with me!

TBDanny - we have had a couple of Aussie Diners before, though it's been so long ago that I forgot what part of your fine country they were living in. One guy modeling Australian RR operations, and I'm not sure what setting/RR our teen Aussie modelled. But as I said last night, you made an excellent choice on your RR and setting. We may be conferring on layout stuff, since we're modeling the same region of the USA (mine is freelanced/fictional, set in the Four Corners area -  AZ, CO, NM, UT). Look forward to seeing your layout plans/photos. Yeah!!

DerJohn, hope you were able to drag a bit more wood into the house today. I guess since it's sn*wing there, all you can get done is MRR'ing, eh? Hey, life is tough sometimes. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Robby - best wishes on your getting the wireless glitch figured out with the Dell folks. Will they discount what they charged you since you w**k for FedEx?

Got some grey and occasional rainy today, the weatherguesser this morning said we got almost 3/4" (couple of cms.), and are supposed to get more tonight. Just misting for now, I guess the biggest portion is over our Indiana, Ohio and Ontario folks Oops - sorry 'bout that! It's 57 F (14 C) for now, supposed to go up a degree (C) or two (F) by this afternoon, then drop to 50 F /10 C tonight. More rain tomorrow, and Friday it'll hold off a day, then resume on Sat./Sun. (when I'll be off w**k..Sigh).

I'll have a slice of Petra's yummy apple thingee please, Zoe. Will finish my lunch and that before I head in to see two clients today, then on-call tonight. Hope everyone gets a chance for some MRR'ing today/tonight.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good afternoon.  I will take a sweet tea to go.

I worked on the layout most of the morning.   Worked on my shipping company most of the morning, and tried to figure out where to put it on the layout.

Jim....I will have to get the"employee" website from the supervisor tomorrow.  Just see how much we get off, and then call Dell.  I looked at Dells website, and they were saying......It would be a 15% restocking fee, and I would have to mail the computer back .  So if I get 10% off, I would have to pay 15% to give it back.  Its not worth doing.  I guess just keep the computer, and move it down stairs this weekend.

 Afternoon folks!

Zoe I think I am ready to have a Dr. Pepper and a slice of that delicious Apple Cake the Petra made for us.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a few minutes.

Well I have in half a day accomplished what I needed to get done in half a day......  So that is good.  Scanned in all the first place poetry entries, and photographed all the 1st. place Art entries.  They are now in a bag ready to be taken down to the Finger Lakes Crimes Times.   Still have to get a check in the mail with a thank you letter to the Speaker we had yesterday.  I also plotted out what I am going to do at Scouts tomorrow night.  Just need to put together a PowerPoint presentation for a couple of things.

TMarsh
Ray- See? If you had a PC instead of a MAC, the program would turn Danny's posts right side up for you.Tongue

LOL  You know I could just tell the computer to rotate the image 180°.....  Only problem THAT would make all our posts upside down...  I know I'll have the image rotate 90° Clockwise and lean my head to the right for ours and to the left for Danny's.......  Whistling

OK, back to w*rk.  Later!

Chris- I was referring to the largest of the elevators… but that seems to be a mute point! Back to the grind stone! Lol

Ulrich- If you want, you could send your “druthers” and such my way… I’d like to take a shot at designing something for you. No pressure… and a great price, FREE (or a couple slices of Petra’s pie!!!Dinner )

Der- I had to have my wife help me with the French spelling, I am going to learn that gorgeous language one of these days…Whistling

Todd- the pile of wood out back is what remains of ALL the catapults I had hidden in and around the diner… Dismantled them to prevent “Pies of Mass Destruction 2” Lol

About the first sketch… The top of the sketch is New Hope, which the two stub end tracks actually pass through the engine/maintenance facility. I will be “fibbing on history” and having it where the Freight House is still in service and NOT being used as a gift shop. The passenger station is operational, as it is currently, and I am going to say that the tracks beyond the station do not just “end” in the woods, but a connection was made to the rails across the Delaware River! This will allow the NH&I to flourish as a necessary connection between Conrail and the “other” carrier… The CRC Chemicals is an actual customer on the NH&I currently (also their largest freight customer to date) I was   considering using the spur to the left of the off layout connection to represent one of the quarries that the NH&I served (I don’t believe any are currently shipping anything off property, only one or two of them are providing stones for use as ballast on the railroad itself.) Should be interesting…

Here it is again, so that if anyone missed it...

Danny- Hey, don’t be alarmed! We are definitely on the opposite side of the fence from “Sanity”, but I dare you to find a group of people that are more welcoming or supportive than this “Tribe of Misfits” LOLSmile,Wink, & Grin

You just couldn’t ASK for better friends!!!WinkYeah!! StoogesLol

afternoon ya'll

Haven't dona a whole lot of anything but sleeping lately. Still sleepy. Then again, there isn't a whole lot to do when it's raining, like say, fix the e-brake light in my car...

I noticed something when digging through my parts box today. The bachmann offset coupla caboose that have slanted couplas match some of the ex-CB&Q cabooses BN had. I had one, but I cut it up trying to make a plow out of it... I ould get by with one by cutting the roofwalk and ladders off.Wonder where I could find some more, and some friction-bearing caboose trucks to put under them?

Danny, welcome to the diner.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

  *  Door blows open and slams with a gust of wind.  "Not a fit day out for man or beast~!"  "Coffee please~"

Jerry..~  rain eh?  Yeah~ we got that too.. pouring rain.  Today is on/off rain.  If it isn't raining, the wind is blowing.  You can tell when it starts raining again,  the house gets this blast of cold air.. then the rain comes.

Yesterday was worse,  90mile an hour gale force winds.. category 2 hurricane levels.  And the rain..~  pouring rain.. 'monsoon' levels.. of Biblical proportions.. my son actually was getting scared.  He asked is so many words.. "How long can this go on before we start flooding?"  I replied.. "Not long.. an hour.. tops?"  Monsoon rains.. wow... lol.   As far as my layout.. well.. "I don't want to talk about it~"

Phillip.. glad to see everything is working out nice for your wife.  It always amazes me.. getting well in hospitals.. well.. you only are allowed .. to get well enough.. so you can go home.. and Get Well.

Afternoon all. Chloe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

Had my Algebra exam today, and dang, was it hard! I didn't finish, but hopefully she'll go somewhat easy on me.
Spanish on the other hand was way easier. ¡Muy facil!
¡El examen de Espanol fuy muy facil, no es dificil! <--- That's epic, right there! Didn't even need a translator to do that Big Smile

Well, I gotta go study for Theology and Chem, but I'll be back soon.

lol, I can understand that except for the fuy part; my spanish teacher, as I've said abt a thousand times, jsut straight up can't teach! and yet she made our exam like she had actually taught us something. Report cards come out tomorrow, we'll see how I did, lol.

Sorry for not being in yesterday, had a good deal of homework, rugby, and then tiredness, haha. Rugby went ok; lotta new guys, which I think threw our rythym off a bit but it's awesome to see more guys out there; also, we were learning how to ruck and that of course was interesting. oh well, that's what practice is for, haha.

Evening all. Zoe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

Had Chem and Theo today. Theo was ok, Chem was so easy! Even easier than Spanish!
Tomorrow are the last two, English and US History. English, meh, history should be cake.

Whoops, meant to write "fue," not "fuy." Fue is preterite (past) for ser (is). I'm assuming you're in Spanish 1, and IDK if you guys got to preterite yet.

Well, I've got a lot of catching up to do, so mightaswell do that now.

RANT_ Lay off the spanish ,please. Left Miami because it is now the OFFICIAL language of Dade County. You don't speak it- you don't work.  rant over.   Sorry!  Flip

Anyway, had to see dean of boys at least 3 times in High school because of Algebra. Could look at the problem  and solve it in my head. Had to take senior finals in seperate classroom and when finished before anyone else, teacher accused me of stealing the finals. Could have popped her in face.[ No guts] Down to see the dean.  And to top it off, she was a Cuban and this was 1954 ,before the rest of them got here.

Ah, train thing. If you have a table for your layout, by using bridge piers, you can get up to a shelf nicely. My shelfs are from leftover flooring and rest[screwed]onto l brackets attached to the wall. 8 feet long and 7 1/2 inches wide. 4 H.O. tracks and safe space.

Welcome to the new AUSSIE.

Prayers for all and wish y'all "Enough"

Jeff, is your foot that the vaccuum's on going to be stronger once you get to take it off? Or are you keeping some weight on the other foot to keep things balanced? Wink

The vac itself isn't attached to the foot. I carry it at my side on a shoulder strap and it has a suction tube that goes down and attaches to my foot. The unit itself weight about 8 pounds so it's heavy enough to get me off balance if I'm not careful.

I went down to my parent's place this morning to wait on the Home Health nurse. She came and did what she had to with foot and the wound vac then my parents and I went to local computer store and picked up a new fax machine and it turned into another all day affair from there. We went Ryan's in DeRidder for dinner then headed back home. I then went into town and got gas for my car then went by the library to turn in some model railroad books then headed back home. By then it was after 5:30. I was just looking up some info on the MagicJack website concerning using the Magicjack with a fax machine. It says it's possible but the fax has to be set to it's slowest speed initially then dialed in until it works right.

Evenin' folks!

Zoe I'll have the roast chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, string beans, and a cup of decafe if you please.  Oh yes for desert another slice of the cake Ulrich brought in this morning.  What, gone already!?!  Well then a hot fudge sundae for dessert would be a good substitute then.

Jeffrey is the Fax machine for you or your parents?  I musta missed something I guess.....Confused  Glad your foot continues to heal up well.

Got an email from my SIL late this afternoon.  My Brother in Law who lost his foot and the lower part of his lower leg a couple weeks ago, developed cellulitis in the stump (still hospitalized, BTW).  Major rounds of antibiotics haven't helped, so they will be taking more of the leg off above the knee this time.  She says he looks thin, old, and tired.  Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning (so he can think about it all night).  Those of you who are praying type, please keep him in your prayers.  I sure will be, and I have started my churches prayer chain, and announcement in the Sunday Services, etc.

OK, break is over, everybody back on your heads!  (Someday I'll tell you THAT one.......)

Catch you all later!

G'day all!

GMT, I don't have any preference for any particular type of address - tbdanny, danny or any other abbreviation is fine.

Ulrich, danke for the welcome.  My current layout is set in the mid-1950s (approx. 1954), and is (loosely) based on the AT&SF's yard at Las Vegas, New Mexico - the other Las Vegas.  The main focus is switching and yard operations.  I'm running on a Lenz DCC system, with the decoders a mix of Digitrax and Lenz silver minis.  I think my approach to modelling/prototypical accuracy can be described as 'plausibility' - if it's plausible for a particular loco/car to have been on the AT&SF at that time, I'll run it.

I can sympathise with your planning problems - my current layout is my third such one, and the closest that one has come to completion.  Have you tried stepping away from it for a while?  I find that usually works for me  - the solutions will just come to me, usually when I can't do anything about them (e.g. halfway up the highway to Brisbane).  And that apple cake of Petra's looks delicious.

Chloe, I think I'll have one of those and an RBF, thanks.  Or failing that, four fried chickens and a coke, with some dry white toast.

Der, you're spot on with regards to the timing.  Given the time difference, I'll be coming in usually mid-afternoon for you Americans, then leaving after dinnertime.  And no, for some strange reason, Australian railways have never really interested me.  My first train set was one of those Life-Like HO scale ones with a GP-35 in the red-and-silver warbonnet, so I guess that sort of set the tone for my modelling interests.  That and a Kalmbach/MR publication called 'An Introduction To Model Railroading' that was put out sometime in the early/mid-90s - it was a sort of summary of what the hobby's all about.

I'm not entirely sure how my sci-fi would be classified - it mainly deals with alien activity on Earth, and in particular, the Brisbane-based office of an international organisation set up to police it.  Sort of character-focused as much as action-focused.   So it's sort of crime/sci-fi. But I am a fan of Star Trek, especially TNG, as well as Doctor Who.  It's mainly a way to fill the 1-hour each way commute to and from work - the price for living on the Coast Big Smile.  Mostly short stories at the moment, but there are possible plans for a novel.

Ray,here's the only real decent photo of my layout at the moment - it's mostly a 'plywood pacific'

I'm currently on a structure binge at the moment, to get the sort of 'edge of town' feel I'm after.  Among them will be the 'W. Mitchell Meat Surgeon', named after my late grandfather - he was a retired butcher, but always referred to himself as a 'meat surgeon'.  This one will have a full interior, complete with cuts of meat in the windows.

Todd, thanks for the welcome.  I think you'll find me in front of the dessert counter, most of the time.  Big Smile

Jim, looks like it's a small world after all.  I don't have a current plan as yet - there were a couple of minor changes made once I performed a couple of operating sessions on it.  Are you proto-lancing or completely freelancing?

Sam, thanks for the welcome.  I've been reading this particular incarnation of the diner from it's first page (I'm up to 29 now, I think), as well as keeping track of this lot.  Given that work's been pretty slow of late (I'm in a Network Operations Centre), I've got plenty of time on my hands.  I definitely found the pie thing very amusing - vaguely remeniscent of the original Pink Panther movies Smile.  Was that continuing from a previous incarnation of the diner?

Vincent, Flip, thanks for the welcome.

Jeff, hope everything goes well for you, with your foot and all.

Things are going pretty quietly down here at the moment.  My partner's coming down with a nasty head cold, so she's called in sick today.  Mum's birthday as well, so I'll be having luch with her and Dad.  It's convenient that we work within a few blocks of each other.  I haven't really had much of a chance to get into the train room on the last couple of weekends, but that should change this Saturday - I'm going on-call for the first time this weekend, so it's a perfect opportunity to have a quiet weekend in.  And in an example of bureaucracy at it's finest, I've got to pay a telco bill for $1.78 - the credit card charge from the previous bill I paid from them Sigh.

To anyone I've missed, thanks for the welcome.

For now, I think I'll just mosey on over to the dessert counter...

***Keith, so did you try flying a kite yesterday?Smile,Wink, & Grin Seriously though, that sounded like a heck of a storm coming through there.

I think we needed the rain, the ground was getting very dry.  Not good when earthquake season comes in 2012.  LOL.. but on another note.. as kids we were all pretty much poor.   So making a kite was no biggie,  and quite the fashion.  So one time~  all of us kids.. decided to make a very big kite.  If I had to guess the size .. well.. take some very old  bamboo.. about 12 feet long.. smash it into four pieces by splitting it .. cut two and make a 8'x12' kite.  We all glued newspapers together.. so we could string the kite and paper it.  When it was done,  we got the biggest ball of string.. some of us.. held it.. and swooosh~! ..   The slightest breeze.. wow.. it took right off.. higher.. and faster.. higher.. faster.. now burning our hands.. there was no way to stop it.  I was the last to let go~  It was big.. it was high.. as it was gaing altitude fast!  Needless to say.. at the end of the line... there was no way to stop it..  it blew over the trainyard.. and who knows what it hit .. where it landed.. we didn't want to find out.~

Hey all!  Great news!

They think the wife is doing well enough they're talking about sending her home a little earlier then they thought at first.  They originally said 48-72 hours, but probably closer to 72.  They're going to make the call tomorrow morning, so we'll see.  If we get the green light, it'll be right about the 48 hour mark.

She looked WAY better today.  She even ate a meal.  A medicine cup of cottage cheese, and another that was 2/3 full of custard.  She hadn't eaten anything slod (or semi-sloid) for 36 hours, but that filled her up.  She was full!  FULL!  Thats so wierd.

Thanks for all the prayers everyone!

Afternoon all from GettingSLAMMEDCalifornia.

We're seeing the third of five storms kinda/sorta breaking up which gives us about an hour and a half of calm before the next wave hits the Coast.  About 4 inches of rain here in the Valley so far, and something like 5-6 feet of new Sierra Cement (snow) in the mountains.  This one was wet and windy, and power-outages all over the place (not here, thank God) and the next one due in is supposed to be wetter and windier.  What's happening is that the Storm Door has dropped down from Oregon all the way to the Mexican border, and we're getting a combination of Pineapple Expresses and Alaskan Cold.

Which means lotsa rain here in the valley, and snow starting about the 3500' level in the mountains.  Uff-Dah and Spooky are beside themselves with joy--nothing like a big storm to gladden the hearts of a Wegie and a Maine Coon.

And you thought that all we did around here was get buff, surf and work on our tans, right?

Which also means that my latest project (stripping the paint off of my new Mallet) will have to wait until the weather clears, so that I can have enough ventilation in the garage to DO it.  Meanwhile, it's sitting on the kitchen table looking a little forlorn and grungy.   But first sunny day--whenever--OFF COMES THE PAINT!

Jeff:  Good to hear about the progress on the foot.  Caught your photo of the Toggle on the DCC thread.  So THAT'S what they look like, LOL!

Ray:  Prayers for your BIL.  That's really bad news.  He's certainly in my prayers.

Philip:  Glad to hear the good news about your wife.  Prayers for her.

Danny: Welcome to the Forum!

Ulrich:  I haven't had a good Apple Cake in ages--that one looks just delicious.  We used to have a GREAT German bakery here in Carmichael, but they retired and it closed.   There's an 'upscale' "European" bakery near the school, but they're overpriced, and not that good.  I got a Stollen from them for Christmas, and it was like eating a dry rock with raisins.  Yuk!  And for what I paid for it, it would almost have been cheaper to fly to Germany and get the Real Deal.

Well, that's about it from StormyCal.  My co-instructor at the high school is taking the rest of the week off, so I've got the choirs all to myself for the next three days.  We're working on "Carmina Burana" for the Spring Concert (we keep reviving it every three years), and the guys are absolutely nuts about it, so it should be a pretty easy go for me.  Nothing like Rowdy Medieval Latin Drinking Songs to get the attention of teenage boys, by golly!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Yeah, I think that's becoming an endangered item in some parts of the hobby. I still have them on my layout (originally DC) but they almost never get used anymore with the exception of the ones that control the switch machines.

Flip,

Thanks for the heads up.

**Looks out window of diner**

Is that a reefer of cream pies being spotted on the tracks outside?  And a crate labelled 'Edible Tray Express Dispatcher mk 2'?

Earlier this evening it was one thunderstorm after another with a tornado watch for all of northwest and west central Louisiana. It was getting nasty!
