Good Evening--

I have a little purrmotor between my arms---the little 'Spring'Approve--but it does require outstretched arms and two fingered hunt and peck--

Got more of those dang case study things done --so when we do these seminars for the next few weeks the things are more structured---as if they were not structuredConfusedMischief

Helllloooo!! Biiiig cup of Coffee please to warm me up. I'm once again ignoring Keith's weather reports as I shake off the cold. We had S*** flurries today, no accumulation just floating through the air all miserable looking and stuff. Sunday night doesn't look to promising.

G- Ok. So you remember the Shtuff battle better than I'd hopedWhistlingLaugh. Anyway glad to hear things are improving and the hopes of a future house are still looming out there. Don't worry about the typing. It's not you. You probably have the same faulty keyboard I do!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Robby- Saaaay! That semi trailer looks real good. The shot from ground level really shouts realism. Just right. (as usual)

Ray- And now for the official, and might I say expected, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Keith- Get an N scale NMRA guage. You won't regret it. It has the heights for docks and distances from the tracks for clearance for most of your questions all in one neat little piece of metal. Among many other useful things, just about every adjustment you need is on this little jewel. Not very expensive and well worth it. And oh yes there are plenty less messy and easier to not glob glues than Testors, but with a bit of practice It'll work great for general stuff. You can't beat it for grabbing and setting fast other than CA. It however doesn't leach well and the liquids are much better for small stuff. Aaaand it's not often that I disagree with Jeff's Identifications, actually I never have, but I think I'd go with the RS1 in this case.

Rob- I used both regular Testors enamel and Polyscale acrylic with no problems on my NuComp trailers. Be sure to wash the powdery release agent off and you shouldn't have any problems. I do prefer acrylics. They are easier to remove if needed and just seem to give a more realistic coating.  My 2 cents.

Ulrich- There is one thing all countries share. When it comes to the movies, every one has a country that is stereotyped based on the feelings at the time. Years ago our two countries would have the other as the bad guy. Germany had the evil man with the slick black hair, scar, long cigarette holder and he was just plain bad. Now, we think (know) Germany is Vonderful!! Ah thank goodness for time. Everytime I hear or see where WWII vets meet the men they stared down the barrels of rifles at, long ago enemies, and hug over the horrors they faced in another place and time, it brings a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat. Now there's an example to follow.

Ryan- good to see you again. (where'd he go?) I missed the edited part, but I hope it was a good oneLaugh.

Jeff- I was looking at the radar for South Texas earlier today and I saw your little situationShock. There was quite a large area that was getting the white stuff.

Welp, guess I'll rest for a bit then go to bed hopefully at a decent hour. Gotta get up and till some ground tomorrow before the weather turns AGAIN.

Hey ya'll.

A package of cars arrived to day. 2 UP hoppers, 2 UP boxes, 2 IC hoppers, and 1 Up gon. All blue-box or MDC kits. One of the UP hoppers has the "we will deliver" slogan, so it's too new for my 1975-1985 timeframe. The other ones I'll use.

Jeff, I'll echo Sawyer; send it east!!!

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

The snow has stopped here for now. There's about a 1" accumulation on the vehicles.

I'm once again ignoring Keith's weather reports as I shake off the cold.  If you are referrring to those dogs surfing.. well those are old.. like last summer.  Its cold here, only my house is 78 degrees.  But aside from that.. my kids have moved up into the Sacramento area by Tom  in Carmichael.. they live in a town called Chico (going to college).. and they tell me it is so cold up there.. very cold at night they can't believe it.  I guess Tom could give a weather report for up there.. but I believe Tom said rain Saturday for him.. and then it moves down to me.. on Sunday.  I prefer the rain.. we never get any.. and if we do.. well, ppl call in sick .. and don't go to work.  A very good friend of mine.. who lived in Seattle for many years.. told me its just the opposite.. and they call into work.. and say.. its a sunny day.. I'm not coming in.

Evenin' folks!

Just a cup of decafe for me Flo.

Jeffrey????  How many hours of snowing and you have a whole inch???  That ain't snow....  This here's a little Snow!

There's a picnic table under here someplace...

You southern boys have no idea what to do with snow......  Got snowed in down in North Carolina about 10 miles from the S. C. border back in the early 90s going to my sister's in Florida for Christmas.  Only a foot of snow totally paralyzed the whole state...  They had no idea what to do with but they got out all kinds of equipment they hadn't run in while to play in it.  Somebody needed to tell them they have to push it out of the road.  They just made piles of it right in the middle of the road........  It was an experience, I'll tell ya. Big SmileWhistling Oh and this is what you look like after playing outside in snow for an hour or so trying to find your car.... (notice heavy winter wear, and happy smile).

It's currently 31°F here in the beautiful Finger Lakes with a low of 21° about 5AM tomorrow morning.  Yep nice crisp fall weather.  Good camping Weather if you ask me?  (Of course nobody asked me so I best shut up now.........!)

Probably won't be in tomorrow until evening as I have to be on the road by 8 to get to RIT by 9 to start setting up for the day.

Catch you all later, and stay warm where ever you are!

Good Evening, Chloe - gee, with all the posts, I'd better have you leave the coffeepot here with me. Just bring me an oatmeal raisin cookie and a Santa Fe mug, please and thank you. Smile

Galaxy, you must have the one PT who doesn't fit that definition I had heard. Great for you! Sounds almost as good as having your own personal masseuse (spelling?). Yeah!! One of our MRR club members has another piece of land where his shop is, and about half of the size of the shop is taken up with his MRR layout. He even has a small kitchen, shower and bathroom, so we kid him about if he ever gets in the doghouse with his CFO, he can hide out there. Wink

Jeff, I found that interesting (and no body parts were injured in the reading of that description...Smile,Wink, & Grin). Thanks for the explanation on the bloodw**k, also. I'll keep reading, since there are four or five new pages of posts, and you may already have posted about your doctor's visit by now. Hey, I saw on the weather radar today that you were getting SN*W?? Shock (Of course, it may be like the smidgen we're supposed to get, will melt before noon...)

Ulrich, it sounds like Petra is not only a great cook and baker, but also a good dietician as well! Bow Are you thinking of making your layout fit across the top of some bookcases (in your apartment/flat)? I know that Iain Rice's shelf-type layouts are designed for that type of placement, and he has some layouts in the Shelf Layouts book (if memory serves me right) that are HO and others in N scale. But you could probably make some fine layout designs, from what I've seen you post in the Diner. Yeah!!

Robby, I forgot if your pic was of a building, but for building roofs like you mentioned, I glue sandpaper down on top of the roof for a 'rock & tar' roof. Then where you have chimneys or vents coming up, you can use some black paint around it with a fine brush for the 'tar' line. Your 'industrial complex' looks good, but I always want more clutter, junk in the back, etc...Wink

Keith, neat story about that board and you and your son. Thumbs Up I've never done that (have only been to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf - by Galveston), and haven't even waterskied; chickened out the one time I had a chance, didn't like the idea of that falling down off them...). Wink Got your email and sent you one back.

Chris, good to hear you lucked out with setting up the train under the tree! Now, remember to get LW both a present and a Christmas card that she'll like. If not sure on either, ask her parents (if they are still around), or a good friend of hers who can be trusted not to blab early. And have a good hiding place for said present and card - off the premises! Okay, you've had your pre-Christmas tip for this year from me (the card-carrying member of the Hallmark Gold Crown Club)(Sorry, Todd!)

Ryan, what DID you post originally? Okay, email or PM me...

Vincent - good to hear there's prospects with the girl, and maybe next trip you'll find more LHSes open (and take you camera along). Wink

CN Charlie - are you using the W-S metal trees, or the plastic ones? I have decided that for any additional tree purchases, I'll just be getting the metal ones (They are TK-whatever in the W-S catalog descriptions, and are NOT the ready-mades!).

Calif.Tom, if that second storm gets there, you'd better keep yourself warm and dry, so you don't catch the bronchitis again. Oops And I can about picture Uff-Dah's expression watching the tree...Laugh Keep yourself healthy there.

Had to scrape the first frost of the season off the car's windows this morning. Found I need to get another scraper, since this one I have skips and leaves stripes where it's supposed to be getting most of it off. Ah, well, no problem, since tomorrow is payday at the bank. Smile

I'll stop for now - have two more pages to read, which will turn into four or five by morning, I figure. I'm on call tonight and want to get to bed a little early - just in case...Whistling

Prayers for a good night's rest and healing to continue. I'll be back tomorrow morning.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Hmm, strange. A picture of Ray not smiling.

Ya know........, people. I'll admit the central US or Midwestern accent is a bit different than some. You have to cross the North, the south, the East, the south East the West and even past the far West Coast, (which to me has no accent) to get to us. We have a Dukes Mixture of them all. We have people that sound like they come from the South. People who sound like they come from the hills of Tennessee or the Ozark hillbillies. I even know  a young lady who you'd swear came from Northern Wisconson just last year but, seein's how I've known her since birth, I know she's never left Central Illinois with a silent "S". Neither her parents nor her Grandparents have that accent and neither do her 2 siblings. Then there is the bunch that I'm told I belong to. The group who takes the southern and the no accent mix it with a bit of hillbilly, but not much, shake it around, speak fairly slow then take about 2 or 3 to 4 words subtract a few letters add one or two, combine said altered words into one word and say it real fast. All in all not too bad and very efficient, but I do understand it takes a wee bit of getting used to. Some who've lived here all there lives don't get it. But really. Tonight I was asked what "They's bout sebm-uhbm-nawl" means. Yeeesh! Sigh

Prayers for those in need. I'm going to bed.

Calif. Tom.. as Jim puts it.  Jeanne and I enjoyed your story of accents.  I used to work with a French Canadian who could listen to anyone.. and tell you where / what part of the country you came from.  Now I've noticed you said West coast and far west coast.  Jeanne didn't believe me when I said it.. but .. here in southern Calif.. you'd think we're West coast.. but I said to Jeanne.. "Heck.. Reno Nevada is farther ..West than us.  Look it up on a map.  its true.  And that far west coast.. does have an accent. But then again I had grandparents from MO that had German accents.. and the other set of grand parents had a spanish accent.  In my home town, there were so many hispanics with green eyes.. and german last names.  I always kidded around and said.. man.. those Germans really like that olive complexion.  BTW.. did you mention the Norwegians in Minn.  Totally diff.  My last boss was Norwegian.. and she had that thick accent.. who'd tell a joke about a Norwegian going into the Hardware Store to buy a new heater for the large tub because of his wife's big B.U.T. .. and needed to know the B.U.T's  rating for the T.U.B. and so on..  only a norwegian could tell the joke.. oh well. Cya all tomorrow .. although I never write much on the weekends. hmm~

Good Evening Diners,

Well it is a balmy 5F right now in Winterpeg and it is supposed to go down to -2F tonight. I've now had enough of winter and am ready for spring. Bears have the right idea.

Jim, I just use the plastic WS kits. They can be made to look ok as long as you  paint the tree trunks. I have a few of the metal kits but haven't used them yet. The other option is not to wear glasses and then they look really good indeed. I do that a lot when I'm looking at my layout and it is amazing how much better it looks. Why worry about detail if you can't see it?

Keep warm and see you soon,

CN Charlie

On my old AC unit I used a slender piece of plywood 33" inches long and notched on one end to turn the dials. Even at that it was a little of a stretch. On the new unit I use an IR remote control and don't even have to get up.

Mornin' Could I get my Thermos filled please? Thanks. It's (gulp) 18 degrees out there!

Just stopped in quick this morn gonna till another field.

Barry- Eeeeeeexactly. Well "in all" but if you'd heard the conversation you'd have got it no prob. Actually they gal would only had to get "seven" out of it to understand. We were talking about how many tractors were driving down the road.

Keith- Actually yes. Every area does have some sort of accent compaired to another. And the strength of the accent varies from strong to almost not at all in the same locale amongst those who've lived there their whole lives. Like I said about the gal with the "Yah, hey dare" accent, (actually not that bad, Mainly the way she pronounces vowels. Especially the O) She's never left Central Illinois and no one in her family has anything like it. eh, who knows why we talk the way we do. I suppose Ulrich could say about the different German accents too.

Gotta run. Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning. It's 25 and partly cloudy. The high should be 50 and sunny.

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday to pick up some Miracle Whip after realizing that I was out the day before. The store was jam packed with people buying whatever they could get their hands on. It seems like when the snow started falling they went int panic-buy and horde mode. How stupid can they get? How long do they think snow will last here. The record is a little over a week. I can understand getting enough to last for a few days if the roads might be a mess. Many of these jokers had carts piled high as if their driveways were going to be blocked by a 16 foot wall of snow and ice. Common sense went right out the window. The time to make sure you're prepared is before an event occurs, not when it's occurring. I have plenty of batteries on hand for my flashlights, electric lanterns and radio. I have emergency rations of food and water on hand and I have an alternate structure to relocate to if the need should arise. As for my visit to the doctor yesterday, it went well. Some of the swelling in my ankle and lower leg is down. It's evident now that when the fibula was dislocated from the rest of the ankle the resultant swelling cracked the skin and allowed germs to get in and trigger a cellulitis infection which turned out to be resistant. The Vancomycin they have me on is combating the infection as evidenced by the blood tests and everything is looking good. The number of foot wounds are down to one and it's healing slowly but steadily.

Just a quick stop.  Seems like some "snow" is coming down.  Maybe a inch or so today.

Going to do some things around town today.  So probably no MRR for me today.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Coffee PLEASE

Better now

Good morning!

just thought I'd stop in and say hi. not much to really say. have to wait til Monday for my next deep tissue back massage and ultrasonic treatment.

It flurried here the other day, but that was about it. It is now just cold. posta SOme snow/rain I think coming in this weekend. AS long as it doesn't pile like homus showed us, with my back out I can't shovel it. Time to stockpile a pile of ones and fivers to keep on hand for the neighborhood kids who come around occasionally to shovel-for-pay. I pay them decent {when I have the money} for the small driveway we have and they do as good a job as they can. SOme are only aobut 8. The teens I give more money to but expect to get the van cleaned off too. Two teens can clear the cars and the drive in 1/2 hour. $5 each is the equivalent of $10/hr.each  not bad. Other times i have to plead poverty and do it ourselves.

Well off to pick up meds, and a few things.

Later guys, have a swell day!

EDIT: well I lied. It started snowing 10 mins after I posted this and in aobut an hour 1/2 inch. a slow fine kinda snow. It's not posta last past 1 am, but that gives it 12 hours to do some damage.

 Good Afternoon,

Flo, make that a steak sandwich and a RBF for me, please. I stay here at the RC and watch who will come by.

An uneventful day today. No news are good news for me nowadays. Did only very little w*rk today in the condo. Just put up some racks in the kitchen for Petra to store all the herbs and spices she needs for her cooking. The TV seems to be w*rking ok now, the plug connecting the antenna with the TV set needs some tinkering. The white stuff you guys seem to be getting is coming down in its non-crystalline form  over here.

Did do some surfing in the internet to make up my mind in which direction I should head with my future MRR activities. Here are somê conclusions I came up with:

  • N scale, although being very much improved over my past experience, is too small for my eyes and hands and does not give me that feeling I attempt to catch. I have seen a lot of excellent work, like Dave Vollmer´s layout, and I am very much impressed about the detail possible - if I could only see it without sticking me nose into it...
  •  Building a layout in the attic is not a wise choice - the place is too damp
  • I am still favoring "arctic" railroading, that limits the choice of theme to either LKAB in Sweden, ARR or the White Pass & Yukon RR. I ignore the Russian Railway line to Murmansk...
  • Lack of available funds means modeling on a shoestring budget, a lot of scratchbuilding will be necessary.

Where does all of the above leave me? I don´t know yet - I miss running a train so much Sad

I guess I need a vacation from myself.

 Blessings to all of you!

Good Morning (still morning, right?) Flo - I'll have a stack of waffles with maple syrup and two pats of butter on top, with a tall glass of milk and a Rio Grande mug of coffee, please. Thanks!

Got my $970.00 check from MRH for the third and final installment of the 3rd PlanIt tutorial series this week, guess that makes me a professional model railroader now. Laugh

Awrighta, Ryan's rich - part at his place tonight! Whatcha cookin' for us, Ryan? ]:-^] Congratulations, and I'd say you know your way around 3rdPlanIt pretty well. When do they hire you for tech support at 3rd? Wink

Confused Ulrich, I'm puzzled about that deal with your 'disappearing TV channels, too. Strange... I never got that interested in narrow gauge, for whatever reason. Of course, most narrow gauge RR's seem to be strictly steam operations, and I like the earlier diesel locos, so that might be a factor too.Wink I'd say that for now, you could make a layout space to fit wherever in your condo you can fit it (subject to Petra's approval, of course) and then use your layout program to come up with the best arrangement for that space. Maybe have a couple of sections across the room, and run a connecting line behind a couch/sofa to the other side? I'm sure you will come up with an excellent idea or two (or three?) for a suitable layout. Yeah!!

Bunch of interesting 'talk' about accents (and I'm sure I don't have any....Whistling) I'm naht sure what Todd said at the end there.. I recall my grandparents on the Rohde side of the family had a little German accent, but not a lot. They came to Nebraska in the late 1800's though - my great grandfather's name was Ulysses S. Mace (named after that General Grant fella). My daughter could probably tell me more about whatever non-accent I have; she went into speech communication (speech pathologist), and now w**ks in a nearby school, and I asked her (they do have more of a hillbilly accent over where she teaches) if, when she works on speech therapy with a student, does she try to bring their speech closer to the local accent, or something for the bigger towns/cities around (which have a less noticeable accent)? I also have noticed that the local news anchors tend to pronounce that larger city about two hours north of us as "Saant Lewis", even though they call the town between here and there "Saint Genevieve" (actually spelled Sainte Genvieive - French history for that town). Okay enough of my boring y'all.... Wink

Johnboy - my wall A/C unit is like Jeffs, and I think all the new ones come with a remote, too. Are we all getting lazy? Nah.. I had a TV without a remote for a while before a friend (who was moving) donated me her bigger one which had a remote. Got more exercise then, too. Although sometimes I have to get up and fiddle with the rabbit ears to get a better (digital) signal on the TV.

And speaking of Jeff - I see you now have your picture for your Christmas cards! Thumbs UpWink Don't get that too often, I'm sure.

Well, laundry's done, so I'll see about chowing down for lunch next. Uh, Flo? Could I see the lunch menu, please. Thanks, sweetie. Smile

Chloe, hot coffee in an SP mug and a Denver omelette, if you please!

Barry, I think you WERE on it, and that WAS the problem!

30 degrees F in my part of Oregon today. A little bit of (revenue producing) work to do today, but perhaps I'll get back to working on the Oakridge yard sometime this evening. The wife is around tonight, so who knows?

Attending a local club operations session tomorrow. My first time dealing with "organized" MRRers. Hopefully nothing horrifying will occur.

Evening all. Janie, I'll take some hot chocolate and a piece of pie, thanks!

I don't even know when I was last in (Tuesday maybe?), so I somehow don't see myself attemting to catch up from a million pages...

Anyways, we lost both of our games. 11-4 on Wednesday, and 10-0 last night (and we were *SUPPOSED* to have a chance last night...). Meh. Oh well, whatcha gonna do. We're a first year varsity team, so we're not expecting to win much of anything.
Next game is Monday evening.

Today, my dad asked me what was going on with my trains. I told (actually, I reminded him, but of course he forgot...) about my expansion plans. And he mentioned a few other possibilites that I never even thought of. One idea I came up with was an around-the-walls/shelf configuration in the office. I'd probably be able to have more track space. This would w**k best if we could move the couch into the family room. Now we'll have to talk this over with my mom, and I really hope she says yes...

Got about 4 inches of snow today in less that 4 hours. My dad and I (my mom's not here, and my bro's with a friend) were gonna go to church, but we couldn't make it out of our driveway (even in 4x4 in my dad's Explorer). So now I'm home.

I can't think of much else, so I'll just be chillen (actually, I'd rather be warming up) over at the RC.

Evening everybody,

The other night I came across an announcement about an open house this weekend at a model railroad club up in the Youngstown, Ohio area. So this afternoon the wife and I took a ride up there. First let me say they have two very impressive layouts. A 2 rail O gauge on the 1st floor, and an HO gauge on the lower level. I certainly enjoyed the day and really appreciate the work and effort these club members put into the displays, as well as the opportunity they give to folks like me to enjoy them.

Having said that, I have to wonder why they put up with the aggravation that must come with having an open house. So many little kids who can't resist reaching out to touch anything within reach, and I do understand that particular impulse. But where are the adults who are bringing them? It's sad that they have to be admonished by club members or others who have better sense. There were also quite a few adults who couldn't seem to keep their hands to themselves either. Some just had to squeeze trees, poke ballast, etc. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but I just hate to see things like this ruined for everybody due to a lack of common sense.

Oh well, enough of the rant.
