Ray- What do I think? Well I think there is no reason to tax a....Oh you mean about those great looking cars. Well the one on the left looks old and worn. Like it's carried more than it's share of loads. The one on the right looks like it's newer and hasn't been used near as much. Other than fantastic, I don't believe I'll make a comment.
PC- Sounds to me like all you were doing was rightfully defending yourself against what sounds like less than truthful dumpings of the blame or shall we say diverting attentions wrongfully toward you, that could jeopardize your career. Well, I took the plunge today. The boss called me in for a big pow wow in his office, one-on-one. He wanted to know a whole bunch of things that were really billing questions, and I'm the head of service. When I told him that I really didn't have the answers to his questions because they weren't in my department, but my past paperwork that I do (my department reports) should provide enough information to piece it together for the most part, but I'll still have some missing pieces of the puzzle that are out of my area, he was not really satisfied. At that point I told him that if he'd give me the authority, I'll find out the rest of the puzzle and make daily reports that will answer any question he ever had. I now have a VERY full plate! To top it off, when we covered how I quote out parts and tech rates, he found that I was well exceeding his expectations (both what he expects, and what he figured he'd find that I was doing) there too. I think it kinda shocked him, because the billing department and office manager have been saying I'm doing a poor job appearently. I was able to back up my story by having him and I physically walk to their desks, not mine, and pull my paperwork off of their desks to prove what I was saying. I hate to do that to my coworkers, but I was just telling the truth. Anyways, it seems as if the hotseat is no longer in my area, but has moved elsewhere.

But of course! Almost as much as I love Monty Python. The last few years I taught we had an idiot superintendent who got himself in some big trouble with some School Board members when he mistook me for someone else in the Music Dept. He asked the board how they could go about getting me fired because I was boycotting the dept. meetings and refused to even talk with the others in the dept. I had two parents of Eagle Scouts from my Boy Scout Troop on that BOE..... They informed him that he must be mistaken as I was anything but quiet and they didn't think I would do that..... One of them did some research and found out who it was....... The Superintendent got a major chewing out by several BOE members at the next meeting. The following spring I was doing sound for the All City Music Concert at the Smith Opera House in Geneva. He was introducing the concert and I had the mic muted. He rolled the mic around in his hand for a bit, couldn't find the on/off switch and put it up to his mouth. At that point I turned the mute off and it was HOT! He say's, "Is this on" at about 150 Dbs.... Jumped about 10 ' up in the air. I thought, Gottcha! Later that evening as I was being a good boy and saying nice things to parents about the schools, I looked over a parents shoulder and there he was watching me from about 2 rows back. A few days later I get called into the office by my Principal. She say, "Ray, I want you to know that you were the topic of discussion this afternoon at Administrative Council". I say, "Crap, what did I do now, he doesn't even know who I am.....!" She starts to laugh and told me he does now! And he was completely wowed by your work at the concert!
Now I told you all of THAT because every time some teacher would start ranting about him being an idiot, I used to say, "Have you noticed how much he resembles the pointy haired boss in Dilbert?"

Aw come on you like to put your 2¢ in ......... Very good advise! I think where the backdrop on my layout doesn't have a pole or a seam or a change of texture, I tried to just what your professor taught. One of the compliments I got from the judges was on how my trees got smaller as they got closer to the back of the layout. I also used several level of forest on the backdrop and gave each a coat of a white mist before adding the next lower (and closer) level of trees. Like this:

I have been doing a bunch of little things today. Like laundry, getting a card and a present ready for my son who turned 43 today, and, ah, there was something else..... OH! I w**ked on the Tichy Falt Cars I am assembling. The 2 cars I have gotten together so far have been painted black and i have started making the plastic wood on the car deck look like wood.... Wood that has hauled a few loads even.... Tell me what you think, I am very open to suggestions as this my first attempt at this. The car on the left is just about don, the car on the right has had the black paint and a coat of earth color on the deck.

The comment about the "newbies" causing trouble.... NJ Transit runs on the old DL&W through Morris County with many grade crossings. One section has residential roads that run on either side of the tracks. The tracks have been there since oh, 1870 or so, the streets, 1900's. Anyway, the newbies complained about the horns at one of the crossings... so, the whistles stopped...until a car ran the lights....(we know what happened) "The train never blew the horn!!!" NJ Transit petitioned to close the crossing for saftey reasons.... The horns now sound again...

I'll catch up while I'm watching the Devils game (vs. Sabres). I've been waiting for tonight for a long time. My Chem teacher is a huge Sabres fan, so we go through this every day. I tried to make a bet with her and if the Devils won, I would get extra credit on tomorrow's test, and if the Sabres won, she could make fun of me as much as she wants (she enjoys poking fun at people), but she said no.
Today was rather exciting at school... During double Theo, the fire alarm goes off. We know it's not a drill because they wouldn't do that in the pouring rain. So after checking the building, they let us back in. They say that we can wear our sweatshirts and jackets if we want to (we were drenched), and just as I'm at my locker, it goes off again. Everyone starts going out, but they tell us to go back in. It went off about two more times, but they just told us to ignore it. Typical day in my school... lol.

I just have trouble catching everything fast talkers say. I get most everything you say, just sometimes I'll not get a few things. Usually I'm thinking it's a term or wordings you youngsters use that I'm not familiar with and it doesn't click with me. Keep it up though I look forward to your videos.

For decals, recommended practice is gloss clear coat, decal, solvaset, dullcoat after (especially on anything but a new or just polished truck rear door which is where all the dust settles as it's sucked in behind the moving vehicle).
50 and rainy all day today, but it's time for a RBF and some hot apple pie ala mode. J.R.

Jeff- Hey at least we've got passed the giant spot light. Remember those? All the videos looked the same, everyone shading their eyes and squinting like they were looking into the sun. My Aunt had a DUAL spot light setup. Talk about seeing spots after.
As I have been sidetracked from what I was supposed to have been doing, or should have been doing, I found myself in Toddland (of which I'm king). I was working on my beverage truck and scratch building my office/ shower area for the Gold Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. (Pikestuff), which is not coming out well I might add . I suddenly remembered-
Fireman216- I was negligent in welcoming you to the Diner! Thanks for stopping in, tell us abit about yourself and your layout. I see where you have been around for awhile and have posted, I apologize for not recognizing you but alas I don't get out much. You see though I thoroughly enjoy Model Railroading and I like trains, ...I'm not what you call a train nut so I don't exactly fit in out there. In here, they don't care. Model Railroading is what is the common bond. Prototypical or not, no one will bite your head off if your version isn't what they would want or how they would do it. We all like to see and hear about each others layouts or dreams no matter how far from prototype or how close to exact. Truly, its your world and as long as you enjoy it, it's fine with us. As you have probably noticed this is more like a club than most threads. We all like MR but also talk about what's going on in our lives. Likes, dislikes, things that make us happy and things that don't. Our families and of course, our layouts. A support group when things aren't going well and a cheering section when things are. There is a friendship here that was formed through Model Railroading and that is what it is all about. Luckily for us the folks at Kalmbach realize this and allow the thread to continue, even tough it violates the forum policy. We do try to stay within the rules, as it relates to politics and such and we don't run people down for their abilities or knowledge or lack of. Not out of respect for the rules, but out of respect for the each other. That is how everyone who frequents this place is. If they weren't that way then they wouldn't stay long because they wouldn't get that satisfaction in here. If you don;t particularly like something, it's not that you can't say something, it's how you say it that makes all the difference. Some out there seem to have a problem with it, but that's because they don't get the most important part of this hobby. The friends you make. Please, if you have photos or have access to a camera, post pictures of your layout if you have one. Don't be shy, we have all levels of experience from beginners like myself, to experts with years of experience. We have expert weatherers who will help you out, to a couple of us who think real dust doesn't look too aweful bad. (just kidding. ....sort of) and all types of layouts. Big ones, medium ones, small ones, inbetween layouts, starting ones, starting to start ones and some who are still in the dream stage. And all are willing to help in whatever way they can. I'm cheap, but Jim will be in soon and buy you a cup of coffee so don't be shy. Pull up a chair, sit in a booth or belly up to the Rivet Counter, which, by the way, is not a dirty word in here.
Now, back to me. I have a decal question. Sort of. I'm redoing a Boley Beverage Truck that I got at the train show. I painted the back body Polyscale Reefer White. I plan on applying a decal. The sides of course, are ridged to simulate the roll up doors so Solvaset will be a must. Now here's my question. Can I apply the decal and the Solvaset directly to the paint, (acrylic for those of you not familiar with Polyscale) without fear of removing the paint. Or should I apply some Dullcote first. I will be applying gloss when done but I don't want to create a build up and neither, or is it niether, do I want to remove any paint in the process because the original color was red. I know I should have gotten the yellow one but the truck cab I wanted red and I figured this way I'd only have to paint the back. It covered well with the airbrush (without launching the cap towards the North West, I might add.....CHRIS!) So, what do you think? Dullcote or not. Burritos are on me.

Todd: The neighbors across the creek have the same problems. The nickname for the little patch of land they have is called "Blazing Acres," and for a good reason. All I'm going to say is 10% of the 270 av. calls the local fire department gets in a year come from that area. Mainly because they build bonfires bigger than the trailers they live in, dump 50+ gallons of gas on it, then light it with a roman candle. But often, we get complaints from them about our little garden shed sized outdoor woodstove that produces smoke for about 10 minutes after kicking on. I'm not going to mention their parties.
I have completed my trestle, with all the scenery, all I need to do is paint the edges.
I'll go to my LHS soon to get some of the remaining Blue Box kits that are left, (If any) and maybe a locomotive for my brother.

I received my new Dish Network DVR receiver via UPS today. I still have about 10 hours of shows to transfer from the old one to VHS tapes. Once that's done I'll change the receivers out and send the old one back to Dish Network.
The second light fixture in the basement has been replaced. Double cheeseburger, onion rings and a Dr pepper please.
Boy I'm sure glad I don't have a unique outlook on some people. I was beginning to think I was dying breed. When I go to someones house I deal with what they do and the way they do things. If I don't want to, then I don't go. Simple as that. I guess those kind of people bother me. Should I get the village to make them move away?

Chuck- I also have problems with red and greens. If the color value (I guess that's what it's called) is the same or close, such as when they are faded or worn, they both look the same. Hard to describe, but I couldn't choose the red button over the green one. They both look either red, or green. Again hard to describe if can't see what I see. I see a color for sure just can't make a choice. Yes stop signs look red and go lights look green. Only certain fades I guess, do I have trouble with.
I also found out that the tint I have on my glasses compounds the problem. Lucky me. I should go polarized they say and it will help. This summer I started wearing polarized mirror tinted sunglasses. I don't have really poor eyesight, just enough to not read at distances. I do feel more comfortable wearing them because I‘ve worn glasses since the 5th grade I believe. Or was it third? Anyway it does give a much better color to the world.

Todd, absolutely right. Very, very well said! I am actually very pleased and excited to have earned my first Merit Award and my second Certificate. One of the judges says that next time he sees me we will chat in person about the backdrop. I have been told to "Think Civil" about 3 times..... All 3 of the judges mentioned that I am very close to being ready for the Model Engineer Civil Certificate. I need to hand lay a few more turnouts, that is about it. So I'll add that to the w**k to get done this coming year. BTW, one of the MMRs that was part of it received all his Certificates while modeling in "n" scale. He earned the Civil Engineering Certificate based on hand building turnouts, dual gauge in "n" and "Nn30" I believe. He said it involved a lot of bad language and shaking his head incoherently at times.... I have seen his layout and all I can say is !!!
Keith, Philip is always a bit "off" more like gamy........ He is either out riding his bike in the rain or dealing with "pointy haired bosses" at W**k. I'd take the riding in the rain any day. Retirement is great. You get to now and then choose what you want to do on a given day. Take today for instance. I have a whole lot of materials to get emailed to the local schools for a committee I'm on, I have laundry to do, I need to get the paperw**k ready to mail into Canada to the region, I have a couple hundred letters to print (after I make sure all the facts are correct) and get ready to mail for a group I volunteer with, I need to remind some folks of the trip to the museum on Sunday (Scouts), and here I sit typing on the computer at the coffee shop...... Life is Good!

Ray, I hate to put in my two cents in. But if I didnt' think you wouldn't appreciate it .. I wouldn't bother. So.. if thats that.. well then.. thats that. (I just had to put that in..lol) Believe me Ray, I would be in tears of pure joy if my layout ever looked like yours. But concerning the judging.. well I guess they want you to be a full blown artist. During my college years .. after I became an X ray tech.. I went back to school to become an Architect. All my life I had taken art classes and more so at Cal Poly. At that time I had one Art teacher that was so unique... his training he received was in europe. And the way he taught was much different than most. One of his lessons was based on.. "Point of Reference' That is, he would say ".. if Martians were to find your drawing.. would they be able to re-creat what they are seeing in your painting?" His one biggy, was 'density' i.e. things closest to the viewer are darker and larger in size and with more detail And as things move away.. they become lighter, smaller.. and with less detail The mind is suppose to blend it all in that way.. lol. So lets get to the gradients in mountains and hills... and how they reach out into the horizon. With just one hill/mountain.. the gradient of the foothills.. going up.. to the peak.. should be darkest to lightest.. because the foothills are closer. And the over all gradient of the mountains or hills.. should also display that density of going from darker to lighter as the mountains / hills lead on out to the distant horizon. Now that was 'basic densities' but it can also be done with bright colors.. lets say of a particular tree.. fall even.. a bright yellow.. but the same type should that is farther in the background, should be smaller lighter/duller and with less detail. Sort of like the painting of a Vase And Flowers .. the Yellow bright .. biggest flower is right up front.. with the best detail. Yeah.. I know~ alot to imagine here, I consider it 'Food for Thought'.. for this mornings subject. As you know, I have said to Jeanne when I saw your layout.. I said.. "Now this guy knows what he's doing!" I even noticed your houses in the background and the different scale size to give the over-all distant 'look'. But like I said.. these judges would have you to be a full blown artist. And~ I think you're the type to think about this morinings topic.. and apply the ideas in hopes of springing forth newer ideas. BTW.. in no way did I look at your layout as I wrote this post. I only am reciting what I learned in painting landscapes. "Don't ask me~ I'm an expert on everything to anything.. which means I know alot of little things."

Yo Tom, I felt that nasty chilly wind yesterday. Couldn't believe it, felt like 30 mile gusts .. but steady. And I said the same thing.. "Feels like a northern chill from Alaska." And to think the day before it was blistering hot here in southern Cali. I was all 'pitted out' and my collar on my T-shirt wet.. and I was saying.. "I'll be glad when winter comes" Little did I know. BTW.. Carmichael is a sweet area to live in. Wow~ I sent my two kids off to Chico State University two months ago or so. I don't think they are going to be ready for how cold it gets up there.. chuckle chuckle. I asked my wife.. "Hon.. did you tell em .. there's no returning to the nest?" her reply was .."I said flap your wings.. flap hard" lol.

The electric toothbrush... lol.. well~ that really got it off.. Thanks Jerry. I went and cleaned the whole roof. I never knew there was that much dirt on it.! Now for the last splat.. well its on the decking of the station. If worse goes to worst.. I guess I can put some ppl down there along with some crates.. or some action area. I certainly don't want to create 'Faces of Death' scene .. but what could I put there.. so close to the train arriving. Its just seem like glue .. 1/4 inch in diameter. I won't bore with a pic. Unless you care for me to do so. But then I might have to switch from Hot Chocolate to coffee~. So, Jeff.. your suggestion of using a Non Acetone nail polish remover shall be attempted later on tonight. I plan on masking off the afftect area.. and then apply slowly.. and check it. If it works.. I'll continue.. and if no damage to the plastic.. I shall remove the tape and continue on. Wish me luck and thank you I really appreciate it. Argh, there is so much more to do. With regards to some comments made here about radio, I must admit that I have been listening to it more and more the last couple of years. One reason is the last car I bought had satellite radio and a navigation system built in. It's so nice to listen to the music of my choice when traveling, rather than constantly fooling around trying to find a decent station. And best of all, no commercials or useless chatter. Another is that a local station here in Pittsburgh, KQV am, begins to broadcast "old time radio" starting around 10:00 pm. Everything from comedy to mystery to science fiction, Very enjoyable.

And a large mug of coffee thank you. Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 8 and 11 mph. Winds could gust as high as 17 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49. Southeast wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 17 mph.
No work today, no one asks for my presents presence( bet you teachers loved that one he he), no odd jobs that need done for others, nothing to do other than stuff around the house that should have already been done. I refuse to use the term Honey Do's any more. Hm, I just said it. That didn't last long. Anyway, I did manage to get the garage cleaned out so Brenda can get her car in again.....after I get the church's grill out of there. Yard still needs mowed the mowers need cleaned pressure washer needs winterized and the burn pile STILL needs burned. Either too wet, windy or I'm not available on burn days.

Ray- You don't sound too upset with the reasons for dropped scores and any comments the judges may have made. ( comments probably not being the correct word for the "problems") and rightly so. You know it's a judging and they must look for things. They can't just breeze through or like Flip sorta said, I'd bee a Master Modeler myself. Used to have a friend that would get upset with judges at car shows. Said they nitpicked at things that didn't matter. I would always say that's the point. If they didn't, what would set you apart from all the rest. If you want to be judged then you will be held to a higher standard, if you don't want that then don't sign up for it. He never did understand it. Just wanted the trophies. Sounds like the comments and compliments on "how did you do that's" was great thing coming from people who have seen a lot.
Jerry- Thanks for the explain. Boy you got that right! Radio ain't what it used to be. I don't even listen to it anymore. Very rarely does it get turned on. Usually CD's from the '70's. Well the CD's aren't from the '70's. You know what I mean. Arguably the best decade IMO for country music as a whole. A few good songs and artists throughout the years, but for the most part I‘ll take the ‘70‘s.
Chuck- My condolences on the loss of Kathy. I am glad that the RR is not a total loss and that reconstruction has started. Good to keep the mind occupied.
PC- Why sorry? 'Tis good to get some stuff off the chest. Keeps it from building up and popping over from what seems to be the smallest thing. Hey, festering aggravations are not to be trifled with. Get it off the chest now I always say.
CNCharlie- You use your ring finger when typing? Wow, I just use the index fingers and have recently added my middle finger on my right hand into the mix. Soon I'll add the middle finger of my left hand. .........But not real soon.
