GMTRacingI love those electrics ! We call them box cab electrics and the less charitable call them toasters but pound for pound they pull more and are more efficient than anything else we have.
JR, I thought the 'toasters' were the locos that GE makes... As for the neighbors, in the past (five?) years since I moved in here, the makeup has changed from mostly college students in the apartment buildings around, to those who depend on the working folks for their checks (I think that's how it could be described). I'm in favor of some change around this area - change for me, to another location...
Rob, good to hear (as Bama said...) that the flood damage wasn't a critical part of the farm, and that no critters were caught out in that deluge. For whatever reason, I'm not seeing your photos on page 13 at all - I even tried 'Reply to', which usually shows any pics at full size, but nothing.
Jeff, good to hear your eyesight is getting better. I doubt that your layout is going anywhere while you are healing up, so do things right, and the layout will still be there when you're really up to some MRR'ing.
Ray, I was spending some time looking over your layout photos, and all I have to say is... Now, as for how to 'translate' all your inspiration to a Southwestern setting for my layout... (And no, I'm not gonna dump the setting, even for all your beautiful scenery ideas). Oh, got your email, also. May pick up that booklet later this week or next, over lunch, I expect.

Lee - on those accents and words, the toughest 'English version' is Australian (for the various different words they use - and i'm not talking a shrimp on the barbie, either!). Of course, I should talk - I live in Missouree, rather than how many residents of this state pronounce its name (Muhzzuruh).

Barry - so in 'furry' mode, does Spring do any less head-butting? Or just do it under the covers, if he's sneaking into your bed?
Got in one order today which had the Busch small animals set in it. I'd thought it was 8 animals (which I thought for the price was a bit high, but hey, for some critters for my layout...). Well, after looking it over, there're about 60-70 animals, including a bunch of fish(!). Guess I'll need some excuse to have a mountain stream/river to put those into. The set has snakes, frogs, butterflies, squirrels, rabbits, salamanders (which maybe look like geckos to me), ravens (nevermore!) and an owl or two. All I need is to get some horses and bigger farm animals, and I could have a farm like Rob does (well, mine would be 1:87 scale, but y'know...). The set's unpainted, but that'll allow me to vary the types of snakes and have a black snack, a copperhead, and such, so I'm good with that! I also had the Preiser set of Boy Scouts - I'm gonna wait until the weekend and see what the color looks like in daylight; the 'khaki' color on their uniforms looks a bit 'cool' (bluish) compared to how I recall the BSA color for khaki. If I still think in another week that it doesn't look right, I'll repaint the khaki to my liking.
I found out this afternoon why Duke's been getting in all that nap time in the back booth - he is officially an ORF member, as of this afternoon!

Now we'll never get him to wake up - unless we ask for a photo of a nice Berkshire or something nice like that...

'Spring' is all furry now---and will go under the blanket at night now. If not, there he is in the closet on top of some pillows---away from any drafts---

The trees around here are losing their leaves fairly quickly now. I never rake... I found out that if you wait long enough, they all blow over to the neighbors and he rakes them.
Only hobby oriented thing I did today was to make a few changes in the powerpoint presentations for tomorrow night. I may take a few minutes and spray paint a base coat on the 2 Tichy flat cars I have assembled.
I'll catch up with everything in a bit.

MMM--some people had a duke-um-up in front of my house---not kids--full grown----2 year olds. I went out on front lawn---find next door neighbour already walking up street---decide ---OK, he's on top of it---a couple of neighbours doing the tin hat thing on each other---built up and boiled over.
Got some cleaning up done on the layout---including the track work. I also discovered that I had left a #10 turnout unfastened to the cork roadbed---so the turnout is now a #9.241 turnout----well, sorta. Kinda---well, definitely maybe--

We won our soccer game last night 5-0! I've also gotten all my make-up work done, so I'm feeling good. Been raining all day here though, but it ain't a gameday, so I like the rain.

A couple pics to share. Wife's church with added area behind it for a "Dinner On The Grounds" scene. Will add some simple benches & shelter later. The other pic is of our friend (UPS) delivering some train stuff to a weathered farm house. I still have some work to do on the roof. There will be grass and some big old trees around it as well. Trackhoe is digging out a pond. Still lots of green foam to cover...eventually!

Here is a pic of the washed fence. I went out and filled all the holes with rocks & gravel, so there will be no broken horse legs. I'll deal with removing the fence another day. Our pasture and that of the neighbors (green strip in the background) were entirely under water. The serious "action" was up at the road. Hopefully we can get a pic of that from one of our neighbors.
As for accents, I had trouble with the heavier Southern accents when I moved here. Irish also gave me a little trouble, but I sure like it when coming from one of those beautiful hot blooded Irish red heads. Ahhh, the memories!

Rob, how’s the water by your house?We have had rain for the better part of 4 weeks now; the ground is slushy under your feet. If this freezes over the weekend we are going to have some ground heaving issues.
I was thinking as we were discussing accents, that I don't have much trouble understanding anybody regardless of where they are from, well sometimes the Cajuns would throw me for a bit with their mix of French Fried English as I called it. But that wasn't as much the accent I think as it was their words and they talked fast to boot. But anyway, when Vincent mentioned New Englanders I have to say I do have trouble with them sometimes. Again I think because they talk so fast.
Had a bit of a polarity problem. I forgot that with the redesign, the loop in the peninsula with the elevator between Gold Creek and the town with no name, is no longer on the return side which makes the right track now the left. Sooo, when the old choo choo pulled onto the loop it stopped. Oh well, just switch some wires and all should be good. I'll make DOUBLE sure this time. The loop is insulated so it did not show a short and the loco I had that I used to test was of course facing in the wrong direction so I had left and right in my head in relation to the loco that was sitting there. When I ran it, naturally it ran in the correct direction so it went unnoticed until I tried to go from one segment to another. Lack of attention. I've made Mr Murphy leave so I should be good for the day. I hope.
EDIT: Pretty funny accent stories by the way.

Regarding accents. The local people here who have never lived elsewhere have their own version of "Southern"
One story involves a daughter who visited from Michigan maybe 6 or 7 yrars ago. Her husband was one of those who had always lived in Michigan and had done little traveling. He was really impressed with himself for actually traveling to Kentucky.
We took them to eat at the lodge of a huge resort park with lots of forest and on the lake.
We had Sunday buffet there which has a variety of really good southern dishes.
We all went to the salad bar first, and were still eating salad when the son in law (SIL) was ready for the main course.
He returned with a very full plate of food. He proudly told our daughte he had some whale meat.
Daughter immediately began laughing in surprise, and she said "Whale Meat !???"
SIL got a little huffy with her and said. "Yes, I asked the man three times, and that is what he said it was."
I was the next from our table to go to the main course buffet. I returned laughing so hard I could barely speak!
I explained I filled my plate with vegatables and so on.
Next I went to the man who sliced the beef.
The man asked; "Rare or Well"
The KY accent of "well" is "wale".

Speaking of accents - I never had a problem with those US accents, from down south all the way to up north. Some of those "British" accents give me a hard time but nothing beats Indian English - I remember being at a conference in Tokyo, where we all had to give an introductory speech. We were all but one non-native speakers. After the Brit gave his speech, a guy from Malaysia stood up and asked him to repeat what he just said, ´cause he had not understood a word -
In Germany, people from Bavaria or Saxony have a hard time to make themselves understood in the northern part, where I live. The various accents we have are so distinct, that we have subtitles on TV!
Petra and I are still awaiting the confirmation from the landlord. There is so much we have to take care of concerning the move that waiting is eating on our nerves.
Next time I am around I will be bringing some of Petra´s award winning Linzer Torte with me!

Yep! Thermometer says 40°F outside but is snow flakes falling out of the sky this morning here in the Finger Lakes. We are just about at the high for the day and it will get down to 30°F tonight. So when I get up tomorrow morning there should be a nice coating of white frost on all the roofs around here.
Kieth, the Finger Lakes are in Central New York, and are a group of lakes formed by glacial action during the last Ice Age. Canada is up north from here across the Big Lake (Ontario). Although Barry lives in Ontario, Canada but is about 225 mile due west of me. Since most of the weather systems around here move from West to East I experience whatever storms and such that he gets a few hours later than he does.......... Well you asked!
Gotta go relight the wood stove and warm the place up. Later!

Took my midterm exam for one of my classes. I studied for once and had the thing finished in 20 minutes, and only had to stop to think a bit on 1 question. I'm pretty sure I got at least a 95%

Todd..........That's the bathroom we were fighting about, oh......a month or so ago. Some people like my accent, but when I talk like a few "southerns" I know, man they laugh!!! Example: I would say fire. Some people I know would say fur. Another example: I would say tire. They would say tur. Just like a line from the movie Gettysburg. Some C.S.A soliders get caught by the North and the captain asks them "why are you fighting?" A rebel says "rats" . The captain said "what?". The rebel "rats, we are fighting for our rats". Good Morning. Rain, rain, go away. Come again some other day. Hm, seems not to work. Oh well coffee and some biscuits and sausage gravy please. We got us and inch of rain over night and it doesn't look like it's gonna be rain free until maybe Sunday. Rain kept the farmers out of the field in the spring and it looks like it's gonna do it again.
Today: Scattered showers before 1pm, then a chance of drizzle after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 46. East wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Tonight: Rain. Low around 40. East wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Jeff- Glad to hear the vision is getting better and the rest of you too.
Robby- Layout's looking good. It was a wiiiiiise move to put the lift out section right across from the commode!! You never know when seconds count! And as for the accent, at least it's consistant. Very soft and not overpowering. Now here in the midwest, we go from no accent (or so we say) to sounding like they crawled out from the hills so far back and so far south you can't believe they never left Illinoi with an s. Couple that with our own unique way of pronouncing words and you have, well, I don't know what you have.

Lee- Global warming. The only time we have Global Warming is when the Global Warming people are flapping their lips. And when Congress is in session of course.
Now, progress on the....... I have no name for the railroad. Hm. I have no name. Guess I'll have to work on that. Anyway, hooked up the board for Gold Creek and so far all is well. I can run a train back and forth like Robby said but I can't make a loop. I like loops. That however will be a while in the making as I'll have to complete the around the room. So it looks like I'm stuck with a point to point for a bit. Nothing wrong with that, just not my preference for me. Having some trouble with the little 4-4-0. It doesn't want to move well at all. Cleaned the tender wheels and of course that helped and I've determined it needs more weight in the tender to make good contact with the track. Also some adjustments on wheel width seem to be in order. First time I have really looked at the thing since I got it and determined it ran. Which it does, just ruins the whole effect with someone placing a finger on the tender to get the thing to run. I know it's a cheap little thing but it will do what I want just fine. But first, or should I say during, I must clean up the layout and the room it resides in. I think I'll do this in honor of Jeff not being able to easily clean his, if at all, for a bit.

Going to get some more stuff done on the layout--cleaning it up so I can SEE the dang thing for one--and setting about getting the New Life feedmill/elevator complex together---still need some more conveyor mat'l however
Keith: Yep. I have 3 versions of that one----there is also a curiosum that I got at a flea market that was done on 16mm called "Better Living Through Chemistry"---I'm not sure who sponsered this one as it had NO credit lines anywhere----it even featured a few 'happy housewives'

All I have to say this morning is the weather guesser has predicted SN*W for this weekend. I think he has it right since MN, WI, MI, and IL have been hit with wet sn*w this week. Robby, find your sn*w shovel, I plan on sending it your way. On the topic of global warming it has been 10 degrees lower than average all summer here, the overnight low was 36F and I plugged my truck in for the first time last night. I continued to work on glueing the backdrop in place as I only have a handfull of small clamps.

Another chilly night here in the Finger Lakes, Flo, so how 'bout a nice hot bowl of chili and a decafe this evening.
I have spent much of the day preparing for the Scout Meeting on Thursday evening. I have completed two Powerpoint presentations and a basic lesson plan for the meeting. This first meeting will be an introduction to the Merit Badge and some intense instruction and discussion on safety on and around railroads and equipment. The second time I see them will be the field trip to the Museums to ride on the Trolley and the train, so I want them to be prepared well before they go. If I know these guys they will know all the "rules" very well and will notice every person at the museum who does something "unsafe"... They will not, however, have any tendency to keep that knowledge to themselves... "Look Musicman, (my camp name) they're standing on the track! (said at 200 decibals!) Hey!, you!, don't you know that you could get hurt! Now get off that track right now!!!" (These are mostly mentally handicapped young adults in the troop. great guys to work with but you have to get used to some, uh, quirks.......)

I'm going to try to get as much of the remaining skirting in place as I can before the crew gets here. I also have to clean up the room downstairs and get it into top notch operating condition just in case we have some time to "play trains"..... I'm sure I need to have at least one train where it has to be moved you know.......
The wood stove is getting a very early work out this fall. It is currently 40°F outside and will get down to 35°F towards morning. Tomorrow is only going up to 43° and there will be a hrd frost tomorrow night. I still need to find 2 or 3 more face cords of wood to do the Winter. The season here is definitely "Almost Winter". I do like living where there are 4 seasons, and actually enjoy winter most of the time. Our seasons are: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Road Construction. BTW you might live in the Finger Lakes if your favorite season is Winter 'cause all the pot holes are filled with snow!
