Der John: Yep...that kinda looks like the charecter. He's gotten a lot more "biker" than when I met him. No offense there PC... Maybe he was having a "bad day" when I met him, there is no way he coulda rode a Harley (or any 2-wheeled vehicle) that day. He seems to have "gone commercial." I can't quite put my finger on what's so different about the Iowa Blackie in the picture...and the one I met. The one I met seemed like he shoulda been in a home for retarded adults. That's NOT meant as an insult or in any way, shape, or form derogatory. He just wasn't "all there." The one in the picture seems more..."with it."

Sawyer: Masking tape should do the trick...we're dealing with low voltages and just a few amps after all. The more modern greens and blue, while easy to remove in their intended applications, may be too easy to undo when used as insulation. I don't know, just thinking out loud. Anybody any experience of this. Not rushing intothe family time as you can see, "Lord of the Rings" is the chosen watch, and I can hear most of it from here! Great shots of New Zealand though. Well, Loving Wife and I decided we oughta get a something-thermic heater, as a supplement to our oil burning furnace. So...we grabbed one on sale at Menards. Looks like it'll do just fine. I decided my truck needs w**k more than I need to start benchw**k. Loving Wife convinced me to get the stuff needed for one bracket, to see if my idea will w**k, and to actually get something up on the wall. Great gal, love her more everyday. So...grabbed 1x4, a metal shelf bracket, and screws. I got one cut made, for the 2-1/2 foot long top piece. The vertical will go from the top of the baseboard up to the 4 ft. line, so will end up lopping-off part of it. Which reminds me: TOM and FLIP...THANKS GUYS! I'll see what I can do with the petrified wood baseboard (100 year old house). Flip, I've got one...it beeps at everything. Stud or lathe, it doesn't seem to matter. I believe I can "narrow down" where one oughta be with it, but I'm still gonna need exploratory holes to be sure.
Batteries for the drill are charging now so will get caught up more in here, make my remaining cut, start with the screwing, drilling, exploring, explative-speaking, assembly, and hopefully ultimately...installing on one "L" bracket for the future RR. Pics later if it w**ks. Pics of the burn pile outside if it don't.

As long as the train doesn't derail, it's straight enough. Now sit up straight at the RC and relax. Oo. That's gonna cost me and it's suppertime too.

Todd: The crossing that I took the VIA locomotive from had a 9"--or so--float to it at one time. The train would go by this one spot and the track would go up/down about that amount. Now it is only ---oh---6" or so-- Now that I think of it I'm going to see if'n I can't grab me vid of that so that our group in my neighbourhood can see this thing!!

While I am trying for as modern look as I can manage for the Maritime Trunk, defacing cars and buildings with graphiti isn't allowed on my layout. The King of Toddland will understand the thrill of such sweeping executive action, even if perhaps not agreeing with me in this case.
BTW, I go with Flip's stud finder solution, although I've used the series of small holes method with good success myself. Just remember that the bracket manufacturers have not yet tumbled to the fact that the lumber mills no longer produce true 2" studs. In consequence, the two top holes of a bracket will seldom align to the stud in question; one has to choose one side or the other. . Not to worry from an engineering perspective, as two screws should be quite sufficient to hold that particular share of the benchwork load.

Yes indeedy ‘tis our Thanksgiving; which has much more to do with the Harvest Festivals of Europe than your Pilgrim based celebration in November. Not the first Monday in October BTW, but the first Monday following the full moon after the Autumnal Equinox. Why make it easy when complicated is much more fun? THE Pumpkin People Capital is Kentville, where this year's theme is the 2010 Winter Olympics with over 280 life-sized pumpkin figures around the town. The city fathers front cash and municipal workers build a bunch, and the worthy citizenry do their own. Halifax's efforts pale by comparison. It is all however, as you say, all JGF!
We had our Thanksgiving feast today, as the family is here and we take everyone home tomorrow. Traditional turkey with all the trimmings. Got in a walk afterwards, which was very pleasant because the weather has been cloudless until late afternoon, and just a few stray clouds thereafter. Sorry about that Ulrich, but we've had such rotten dreary wet this year, that a little break is to be crowed over!!!

Ulrich: You've got me thinking now about my proposed colour scheme for passenger cars on the Maritime Trunk. I was going for a two blues and sandy cream to suggest sea, sand and sky. More blue than cream, but the mess of the good old 140323-7 gives me pause!
Sawyer: Let us know how your electrical tape holds up insulating those terminal strips. I find the stuff comes unstuck far too easily. Maybe I'm using the wrong brand.

For Todd, Robby or those wanting prototypicalness on their modern RR's, I should mention that there are companies in Walthers' catalog who make decals of a variety of graffitti, so your hand need only be steady enough to get the decal onto the side of the car and let it go in position... But I'm not in that particular prototypicalness group, so how would I know?... Oh yeah, and with decals, if you're careful, you can take the graffitti off later when you come to your senses if you change your mind...

Sue - I saw the article in MR's current issue (and recalled your and DerJohn's talk about doing the 'shrub thing', but for one, I know about nothing about which bushes/plants I would get (I'd probably forget a half hour after I saw a photo, even), and two, I don't think we have any such bushes near our apartment building. Besides, I'd likely bring in bugs with them that'd infest my apartment... So, I use the artificial kind. Well, except for some dried plant thing I got at Michael's a few years back (when I was in Memphis visiting my friend Linda). Those will become some kind of aspens, if I recall the directions correctly (I know I have that article around here somewhere... I do admire what you and DerJohn and others can do with the 'shruberry though.

Ah, Flip - you got about the reponse from your report on your temps as I did on Friday at w**k. See, I have this widget on my computer for the weather, and I have a setting on it that lets me switch to see what Key West's weather is like. I think on Friday - when it was about 50 something and sprinkling, it was 90 F (heat index of 104 F) in Key West. Didn't impress them too much, either...
After church today, when I was putzing around in my apartment, I hear a woman screaming and some thuds (sounded like the next door apartment), and a woman's voice asking/telling someone to give her her phone. Next door neighbor has at varying times since he's been there, had different cars (which I think might be girlfriends he's connived into moving in and taking care of the cleaning, and possibly the one or two kids he may have partial custody of). I'm wondering if the gal's in serious danger, so I called the police and told them what I was hearing and requested they send someone to check. A bit later, I heard a knock on next-door's door, but the voices weren't loud enough to tell for sure what was said. But after the police had left (there were 2 cars out front, I noticed), or while they were still out front, I heard the door open and shut and saw a woman going out to a car in our lot and driving off. Hope she is out of that situation for (her own) good. Now, so long as the neighbor doesn't decide it was me that reported it, and try to take revenge on me/my car. I don't especially trust him much. More than enough said on that.
Todd was talking about his progress on the layout; I was able to get 95 percent of my mainline down and nailed. Kept having those little tacks bend on me, so in some spots I just pushed/tapped them in 1/2 or 2/3rds of the way, and I'll go back later (maybe tonight) with a nail set and take it down the rest of the way. But here's the mainline for now, with the changed turnout closest to you:
Yeah, it's not completely straight on that mainline, so I guess I'll sit at the RC for now and look through that Walthers catalog a bit more.

Howdy do all. I'll have a cup of coffee please. And some of that ham Garry sent in. What's this? A menu? I didn't even know we had one. Looks like a set of encyclopedias. Oh, I see. Those things are too much for the girls to lug around.
So, I have a train section running! The new control board works like a champ. I came up to report in on my progress, and catch up on what's been going on before I get too far behind again, when I was hit full force with a Honey Do. Luckily it only involved putting the storm glass in the screen door, so that didn't take long and now I'm back in train mode again. So far, great day. Don't know if it will last into the evening because they may call me in to the restaurant if they get busy. I hope not but when progress is being made in Toddland, (of which I'm king) something always happens.
Well, gotta get working on another board for the Gold Creek section. That will be requiring 2 control boards. Not so much for the amount, but more for the arrangement. There are actually two sections and I decided instead of putting 2 on one board I would make two boards.

AmanaMedic - It doesn't always work, but sometimes the easiest way in the long run is to remove the baseboard. Often there is enough gap at the bottom of the plaster wall that you can see the studs themselves. If not, it's a good place to drill some exploratory holes to locate them. Drill a 1" hole and use a stiff wire to find the studs to the left and right.
Well, it's been a busy weekend for the wife and I. We took a couple of days and went to the train show in Timonium on Saturday. Didn't find everything I was hoping to, but managed not to come away empty handed either. I spent more time looking at the operating layouts than shopping probably. I'm telling you, there are some really talented folks in this hobby. And what great ideas one can get for future use in building that dream layout.

Garry - from the late 1970´s until the early 1990´s, Deutsche Bahn had painted all locos and passenger cars in an ocean-blue-cream livery, which looked only good for a moment after leaving the paint shop. This livery acquired a "dirty"look within minutes and all rail fans were finally happy when it disappeared.

JimCG metioned buying turnouts. I use Atlas and they do fine. I also have Peco and Shinohara. The switches in my steel mill and in my new yard were used when I purcahsed them. For example, my new freight yard has used Shinahara's. I bought a lot of about 12 on eBay for less than $5.00 per switch. Some needed repair work, but I am using all of them.
Ray ... It must be nice to have a nearby RR museum and to spend time there.... The KY RR museum is roughly half way from here to Cincinnati, and we have met up there with the kids and grandkids who are in Cincy. I recall riding in an old coach about 4 years ago with them as the museum operated a train between New Haven, KY and Boston, KY (Not like cities in the East with such names)..... We passed some old donated, rusty hulks on a siding. Granddaughter (then a 4 year old) said "Grandpa has to fix those trains." .... One of them an old L&N EMD E6 would have been a neat one to fix, and I understand the museum is no doing that. ....The museum has a nice looking C&O Berkshire, but don't tell Duke.
Ulrich .... We rode a train between Frankfurt and Hidleburg (round trip) about 15 years ago (or more), and I think it had electrics looking like that type. It had very nice coaches painted blue and white.

No foot problems thus far so no news is good news. Also the daily fevers have ceased. That's one thing I won't miss. The doc said that would be a good sign that they had gotten all the infected bone out. I'm looking forward to the visit with the foot doc tomorrow and I'm understandably curious about the progress of the healing. I've been doing a lot of TV watching of late so as to stay off my feet as much as possible. This does however take a heavy toll on my computer time and layout work. These are two things I want to get back to as quickly as possible. The computer helps me maintain the link with my friends and the layout work keeps me from going up the wall. One of the prices to be paid for being disabled and unable to work is that the daily schedule seldom changes. Therefore any chance to get out of the house, even a visit to the docs office, is looked upon with favor and an excuse to break the daily schedule.

We got an ovation and loads of laughs and grins from the congregation. I came back home to get some breakfast.

It is currently 44°F here in the Finger Lakes under partly cloudy skies. We have the same Freeze Warning for tonight that some others have mentioned. The predicted low is 33°F but they are taking no chances. The wood stove will get fired up again tonight. Sure felt good to have a worm house. HOWEVER, that being said, and I want to say this quick before the mods shut me down and someone gets upset, it is a fact of prototypicalness (word?) that it exists and that being what it is, if a person wants to model it then it is their choice and I have absoluuuuuutely no problem with that whatsoever. I can appreciate someones efforts at reproducing them on a model. After all, it's their model so it can't be criminal. Right? Anyway lack of graffiti is just my personal preference like the color of my truck. White. The absence of color. How ironic.

Petra and I have started to make lists of the stuff we can take along into our new habitat - we have just too much gear. We will try to sell some of it to help offset the debt. The house will then be up for foreclosure sale -

Sue - Mr.B´s subway is really something, I have watched his video a number of times. I guess you need to be a little "shady" to build a subway - I´d rather go for this:
Garry - Deutsche Bahn has changed their color scheme a number of times in recent years - an easy task when the tax payer is picking up the bill. Until the late 1970´s all passenger electrics were blue and the freight ones were green. Locos for special service like the TEE trains were red-and-cream colored. Now all locos are basically red with some white striping in front. It could very well be that you have seen the loco in this livery. The model is a new generation Marklin edition with an MRSP of about $ 400 - I can save about $ 5 a month, so that will be over 6 1/2 years before I can buy it -

Keith - I don´t know whether the guys have given you the warning about Vinnie - he is the guy with the shotgun and the switchblade. We are very cautious not to upset him or wake him up. I had an argument with him once and the only way to get out of it was to promise him a month´s supply of Petra´s strudel...
Today´s going to be a wet day - do I say wet? I mean WET! Time to watch my favorite TV show called "Train Romance". It is a show about trains all over the world, very interesting and entertaining
