Hi all.
I've not been here in a while, long while I should say.
As I tried to catch up, an impossible task it seems, I note that there are too many new faces about. Special greeting to all of you. I also note that many of the old regulars appear to be missing.
Old Gloetown is in tand still for now. The misses needs good care these days so when I'm not at work, my spare time is spent looking after Gloria. She will be getting knee replacement surgery in the new year.
The family has expended by one, a new great grand son was born on Aug 1, his sister who is 2 1/2 calls him her 'baby butter'.
My old Sunfire dired and I had to get a new car, a bit larger this one is Pontiac G6.
I'll try to visit more often in the future. Hope Everyone is well.
Luc!
All over the map again--everybody now tuckered out and some even asleep. We's be having a somewhat quieter day--some are going with Audrey to Springbank Park and seeing the sights there while Steve and I do the used book store/record store thing.

Back, Luc. Have a Root Beer Float!
Good Evening Diners!
Summer has finally arrived in Winterpeg, just in time for fall! We are having a week of +28C which is supposed to go right through the long week-end. Ah yes, summer week. Nice if could last 2 weeks but that would be pushing it.
Welcome back Luc. Hope you didn't get drowned in the hurricanes you've been having out your way.
Ulrich, hope tomorrow goes well for you and good to see you here!
All this talk of tractors is interesting and even though I'm a city guy I can say that I have actually driven an old Massey 44, the last time was this past May. Our boat club used it to move boats in the yard. I think it is about 1950 vintage. It isn't exactly easy to steer so I can't imagine how some of you managed just as kids. Mind you my tractor driving days are now over with the sale of the boat. I can relate to dads who can't understand why a 10 year old has trouble working machinery designed for adults. My dad couldn't see why I had trouble mowing the grass with an old push mower that I had to reach up to hold the handles and with blades that he never sharpened. It was a glorious day for me when he finally bought a gas mower.
Big day tomorrow for little Robbie, he goes in for the snip! Hope he doesn't come back as Roberta.
Time for a little TV so I'll say goodnight.
CN Charlie
Good Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of hot cocoa and could you nuke one of those cinnamon rolls from breakfast, please? Yep, just a brief 'warming'. Thanks!

Luc, great to hear from you again, and keep taking good care of Gloria. That G6 might have a bit better mileage than the Sunfire did, I'm guessing.
Jeff - you have been practicing your weathering extra special and not showing us, you rascal! Great job there on that Southern boxcar!
CN Charlie, you wanna be extra careful on your spelling for your dog's name there - for a second I was thinking I had missed some news on our Diner weathering guru (and wondering what his wife thought of all that)... Luckily, I realized you meant your dog!
Kinda busy day at w**k today - had 2 of my 3 follow-up people not show up (all my regular clients made it), our new psychiatrist arrived (and we had a luncheon for him), and my co-worker and I had one (uh, difficult...) client wanting us to cover their being kicked out (of the 3rd residence this year), by our finding them a new place to move to. (Sheesh!) My co-worker got that one, and wound up with the client actually getting a ride from someone they knew to another town - out of our coverage area (whew...).
Picked up materials for our singles group starting up on Sunday (based on John Ortberg's "The Life You've Always Wanted"), and between now and Sat. night I will go back over the book (left from when another group I was in covered it) and add/modify as needed for use in our group. I like a number of Ortberg's books.
Another Walthers survey for me to do this evening; this one was on structures, kinds I liked, my skill level, rating factors that affect my buying a structure (built-up, kit, wood, plastic, resin, etc.). The surveys are interesting - got me curious what they'll wind up doing with them. I did express my dislike for the tops of columns (the roof edge thingees) not lining up well, and suggested they improve their QC on those.
Another fine day in Southeast Missouri - temp got to 81 F (or so), after dropping last night to about 50 F. Gonna warm up tomorrow a bit, to 83 F (a balmy 28 C). Still no forecast of rain until (maybe) a little by the weekend.
I'll sit at the RC until I finish my hot cocoa and then head for home. See you all in the morning. And Ulrich, keep us updated on your recovery, please!
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Went to El Giro's with the parents tonight right after my Athearn boxcar posting. I prefer El Giro's to Las Margaritas out on Billy Goat hill. Their salsa is better and you get a better value for your money. I usually order their #9 which costs about $10. A single serving size is big enough that I can make 3 meals of it and I'm a big eater. Try getting a meal that big at the other place and you'll shell out $30+!The redness on my hands is just about completely gone now. I put burn creme and Vaseline them this morning and that helped a lot.
On the way back home (8:30) we came across 4 SuddenLink trucks at the top of Vernon Park road. Looked like the cable there was getting a lot of attention. They've been having major problems with the cable out here since that last big storm went through last week. Hopefully they've got it fixed now.
Evenin' Folks!
Had a short but interesting committee meeting for the Pack I am commissioner to. They already have a couple ideas for continuing the pack after the schools discontinue their charter. We will be having a meeting of all the parties including the troops and their Chartered Partner as well. (I am the Chartered Partner rep for the Church that charters 2 troops here in Geneva as well - too bad It won't give me 2, or 3 votes as I represent actually4 of the interested parties in this.......)

Charlie the Massey Harris and the Oliver were the hardest as I remember to steer. Very stiff. The Fords, John Deeres, and Alice Chalmers were sweethearts in comparison. Minneapolis Molines of the 1930s were somewhere in between..... OK for all you city people out there that haven't clue of what a McCormick Deering 10-20 looks and sounds like, here she is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVA51Yx3PbQ&NR=1
And here is a working photo of the 15-30 in action doing some plowing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=905R42Kezl8&NR=1
I was about 8 years old when I first got to drive the 10-20. Wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be.......... Oh, and BTW it was called a 10-20 because it had 10 horsepower at the drawbar and 20 HP at the flywheel (Belt). So the 15-30 had all of 15 HP on the drawbar and 30 HP on the belt.
I think the old McCormick Deering would be a great model for my layout. Too bad no one makes one in HO.
Have a great evening!

Hello ....
There is too much non-mrr stuff going on for me......
Jeff ... I hope the burns heal OK.
Luc ... glad you were here.
Ulrich .... I must have missed the explanation. Sounds like surgery. What's up? (Maybe somebody will answer for you)
Thanks for all the advice on the computer virus. The desktop s idel today. I had no time to mess with it. I found some info where you could download a program on a good computer, copy to a CD, insert CD in bad computer, boot it up,and clear teh virus............ However, shotgun therapy may be a good option as Nik said.

You just cant beat Monty Python or anything from Mel Brooks. His "Blazing Saddles" and "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" are the best comedies I have ever seen, and he always works himself into the movies he's directing.

***Jeffrey, great looking boxcar there.
***Luc, hope Gloria isn't in too much pain while she waits for surgery. Congrats on the new great grand son.
***Ray, gotta love those old tractors.
***Barry, I found watching that video somehow unsettling. YIKES!
Speaking of tractors, our little JD has sprung some kind of fast drip leak. Cleaned it up this evening and will look for where this new leak is coming from tomorrow. Either hydraulic or gearing seal.
I left the hose draining out the tank down at the barn before it dawned on me minutes ago. It was running for over 4 hours. Lost half the water from that tank. Tomorrow I'll round up every hose I have and fill it back up using the storage tank here at the house. I haven't had to do that in a long while. DUMB DUMB DUMB
Good night y'all.
Rob
Good Morning,
Janie, a glass of milk and a bowl of muesli - I´ll be at the RC to watch who´s dropping in...
Monday will be the day of surgery, i.e. I will have to go into hospital on Sunday morning to get prepared. Unfortunately the surgery isn´t going to be just a walk in the sunshine. I have been complaining about being tired all the time - the reason being that one of my cardiac valves isn´t doing the job it is supposed to do. So it is going to be a repair or exchange job. I don´t like the thought that some ill-paid and overworked surgeon is cutting up "me heart", but there is no way around it.
CU, folks
I officially retired from Active Duty on the first; I even have the blue ID card to show for it now!

LSWrrJeff, nice looking XM you have there, did you do the weathering?
Good morning. It's 66 and clear. The high will be around 90 and it will be partly cloudy.Today I'll be continuing a couple of projects I was working on yesterday. I need to finish up the new Athearn boxcar. It needs a coat of Matte-Finish and a set of Kadee #5 couplers. Right now it has the cheapee McHenry couplers which I had on it through the weathering process to (1) keep paint from getting into coupler pockets, wadded up paper towel doesn't work all that well. (learned this the hard way) and (2) if a coupler is going to get locked up by paint or whatever I'd much rather it be a cheap piece of junk than a more expensive Kadee. I also need to 'rust up' the axles and the backsides of the wheels. Project #2 is a N Scale tank car I tore down yesterday. I used the Dremel to remove as much of the molded on handrails and grabs as I could get to and now I need to get some fine sandpaper so I can hand sand it smooth. I'll be using it as a HO Scale propane tank. Today is also grocery shopping day so I'll be doing that as well. That's fine, I'll be able to get the Matte-Finish and the sandpaper at the same time. I'll be starting another weathering project today as well. My Bachmann Boise-Cascade all-door boxcar is way too clean and needs some dirtying up so it looks more like my Bachmann Southern all-door boxcar. There are also 2 DPM kits that require my attention. One is the 'Robert's Dry Goods' building (#10200) and the other is the 'Front Street' building (#12000) and I have 2 packs of DPM modular walls to play with.Today's Weather for:Sundown, LA 71446-6114 9/3/2009Wind Chill: 66°FHumidity: 77%Dew Point: 59°FSo Far TodayHigh: 69°FLow: 66°FRain: 0.00"Rain Rate: 0.00"/hGust: 0mph NNEToday High: 92 Partly cloudy. Good Morning--
'Spring' just had to step on to the keyboard and send my post into the aether....
So we'll try another post---
Ulrich: YIKES!! That sounds not so good!! We'll keep you in our prayers-------
We've gots lotsa sun and the high of 24C today---right now out on our lovely deck it is -----9C.
Got some running around to do today and some of that will be to FLHS to see what new stuff showed up. Steve will be spending some time in some line ups to get his student card and such------
Chloe, I'll have an extra strong cup of rawcaffeine please-----I'll be over at the corner booth
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I need coffee! Dark roast COFFEE! Strong Dark Roast Coffee and I don't care what mug you serve it in this morning....
I tossed and turned most of the night. Allergies kicking in a bit I think, I just couldn't breath right and I had a tickle in my throat. Finally dozed off about 4 AM, got up once at 8:15 to visit the "room down the hall", then slept like a log until 10:30. I would still be sawing wood except that my son called at 10:30. Of course with my hearing, it was just enough to make me wake up, but not enough to say, "Oh the phone is ringing...." Since I promised to help him with a couple of projects today and was expecting that he might call around 11AM, I quick got a pot of coffee on and headed for the shower.
My Son's wife got in a fender bender with her car. Somebody hit her car. So it is in the body shop and should be done this morning. I was to drive Art over to the shop to pick up her car after he dropped off his daughters at day care. He then had an appointment to take his boat trailer down to get it inspected. So far he has not heard from the body shop, his oldest is having a flare up of her rosacea around her eyes, so he is keeping her home today. I will be taking care of her for an hour or so this afternoon. So.... I am "on call" most of today.
I have an old college friend and his wife coming for a short visit on Sunday. Haven't seen them in close to 35 years (we have kept in touch by mail and now email over the years). I have to do some major house cleaning in the next few days! Luckily some of the "house cleaning" involves the layout....
Hope all of you have a great day and my prayers to all in need.
Howdy again!
Finishing the coffee here at the Rivet Counter and caught up on some posts I missed...
Ulrich, my prayers to you for a successful surgery, and an easy recovery. I know you will feel much better with that done. Good luck!
Barry, just spent the last 15 minutes watching the videos you posted. Those guys must be out of their minds trying to start an engine that size that is not tied down to something solid!!! I remember several times idling the John Deere A or the 60 that the front end would bounce up and down with the torque of the engine...... And... You have to love that UP Challenger. People can't figure our why there are still those among us that want to model the steam era. They should watch that video! Nothing like it!!!
Good moring. Another pretty day!!! Keep'em coming.
Not to much planned today. Might work on the layout some, and get started on the new boxcars.
Hope everybody is doing good.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Went out and got the grocery shopping done. Most $1 TV dinners as the doc won't want me traipsing about in the kitchen much. So for a while it's just gonna be heat-n-eat. Also went to Lowe's and picked up a can of Valspar clear flat spray paint (Wal-Mart didn't have the Krylon Matte-Finish) and a pack of 320 grit sandpaper.
Hello..
Ulrich...... Prayers and best wishes for a successful surgery and a prompt, full recovery. ... (btw, any strudel, today ? )
Cheers, everybody
Howdy all...Its sunny and 73 here but it seems warmer than that...I'll have a Polish sasage drag it thru the garden on a bun, fries and a strawbeey shake please...Thank you..Working this morning cleaning up my van..tring to get some wax on it before winter..Foun a con cor F 3 on E-bay this morning and put a bid in on it..ends saturday...
Jeff..Great weathering job...
Ulrich...You are in me thoughts and prayers...
You all have a good one...Jerry
Cox 47Jeff..Great weathering job...
Today I tried Valspar Clear Flat for the first time and I'm impressed. I think I'll be using this stuff now instead of Matte Finish. Here are two photos of one part of the same car. The first is before using the Clear Flat an dthe second is after.
Good Evening---
We got Steven into his new quarters at the university. Dang, the place has seriously changed from when I got stuffed into a residence. I had to share mine with a longnosed rat, ---I mean, fellow student--but he spent more time in the boozer---and by Xmas I had the room all to myself-----Now Steve gets a room that has a kitchenette and a bathroom all to himself----and, yes, he assured me he'll keep it clean
His text books have now cost about $745. And counting. He still needs an elective--------
Chloe, I'll have an RBF and a Lemon Merigue Pie please-----I'll be at the RC for now---
Hello again...
feel free to have some cake.....there's plenty to go around.........Shelley treated me to lunch in Clarksville, TN to celebrate........
Cheers
Chocolate dipped icecream cone, please.
After a long day on little sleep, the wife & I went to the train room to discuss ideas. We're still swapping buildings around in her town, trying to come up with something that looks right. So far, no final decisions.
Hooked up the animated "Stan's Diner" sign and all I can say is "COOL". We're both very impressed with it. She asked if her carnival rides would look like that. Uh, no!
Now she's thinking she should have a school, but there is no room anywhere for it, unless you pull that eminant domain cra* on the wee little farmer family and steal some of his land for it. Fortunately, my wife thinks the horses and cows need to keep their pasture for grazing.
The best part, she wanted to watch her train run. I just think that is neat. Oh, when she asked (again) if I was going to have a town, I said no, your town is enough. Most of my layout will be barren land from a past vulcano eruption. Does anyone think one of those impressive BLAST FURNACE models could work for smelting some ore deposits obtained from a vulcano mining operation???
Another question (asked before but I forgot the answer), do you use AC or DC to operate HO scale 12v lampposts?
Evening, Chloe. I'll have a medium slice of Garry's cake and a glass of milk, please, and a Santa Fe mug of coffee for washing it down when I'm done. Thanks!
Jeff, nice job on that boxcar - how'd you do the rust spots on that? Toothpick? (Very) Small brush? Those wheels are looking good, too.
howmusI think the old McCormick Deering would be a great model for my layout. Too bad no one makes one in HO.
Ray, maybe if you sweet-talk and bribe DerJohn, he'll figure out the directions for you for building one...
Barry - so, how much time have you been spending on the 'Tube lately? Me, I had to w**k today (although 2 of my lonely 3 appointments for today already either had not showed - my 8:00 - or had rescheduled - my 3:00 - by about quarter of 9 a.m.). It did make it easier to have my paperw**k done before I left for home this afternoon, though...
Man... - that Challenger is HUGE when you have something in the picture to compare it to! How fast does that loco move when it's (as the video said) "pouring on the power"?
Rob, sorry to hear about that forgetting the hose was running. But I bet you won't forget about that for a long while, eh? At least, most things I learn by -ing tend to stick with me for quite a while... How've the critters been doing lately? And have you been getting some painting in, in between all the chores and w**king on your wife's layout? Hope so! Oh, and I'm not the electrician in here, but I think the DC outputs of your powerpack would be good for lighting. That's kinda dangerous territory, inviting the wife into the train room - she'll find more things for you to do! Now, if she had to do some of that w**k herself, it might slow her down a little bit...
Ulrich, we'll keep you in mind and for Monday, as well as for you to get the best (and least tired-out) surgeon in that region for your surgery. Fill us in on things once you get rested up and out of the hospital (unless they have 'puters in there, of course, and you can post sooner than that from inside).
Last Night, I went looking through what I thought were the most likely tubs where the NMRA gauge might be, but no luck. Ah, I know what I can do to find it! I'll go buy another one from my LHS owner/local MRR club member on Saturday! That'll guarantee that the other gauge will turn up, right? (Sheesh!....) Even if buying a new one gets the other one to show its face (so to speak), I'll just put the other one in a definite location - like taped against the inside wall of one of my storage tubs, where I can see it from outside of the tub.
Hope everyone (including you, Ray and Rob) gets a good night's sleep tonight. Prayers for healing and for comfort, as well.
Blessings,
JimRCGMOJeff, nice job on that boxcar - how'd you do the rust spots on that? Toothpick? (Very) Small brush? Those wheels are looking good, too.
