Mornin' everyone!

Going to be another hot but with the round yellow thing blazing up in the sky day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 74°F with a high around 84°F later this afternoon.

Zoe I'll have an "everything" bagle and a cup of dark roast in a FGLK Mug.  Please and thank you.  I'll be over at the rivet counter with the others.

grayfox1119
I then can take some self satisfaction in what I was able to do myself.

Dick, that was the point I had been trying to make.  I would rather have something that may not be as "perfect" on the layout that I made myself than a "trophy" model that I bought......  It's just me and I have no problem with anyone who does things differently.  Remember the old "Shake and Bake" commercial back in the 70's with the mom bringing dinner to the table?  Mom say's, It's no problem, it's Shake and Bake!  And the little toothless child pipes up and says, "And ah haelped" (in a southern accent....)  I sometime feel like that little kid.... because I made it myself!

So Barry, (in the words of Harold Russell) "Are you having fun?" Big Smile

I was looking over the "Dang Heavy Handed Evil Moderators" thread this morning just to see what had been posted overnight, was reading where I had left off last night, clicked on the last page......  and was taken to the, "This page does not exist on this forum" page..........  Hopefully it won't get restarted by one of the, "Free Speech" advocates.  Way back in Jr. High School, I was privileged to have an English teacher who was a young lady when Women's Sufferage was happening.  She taught us more about "civics" I think even though we DID learn English (we were terrified of her).  She was already in her 70's when I had her.  She made it very clear that every "right" comes with a "responsibility"!  Nuff said.

Best finish my bagel and get some things done.  Later!

[edit] Looks like late breakfast and early lunch is on me.  Eat hearty folks! Smile

Mornin‘ Coffee please. Thanks. I started this post last night but decided to hit the hay and finish this morn.

Another State Fair parade is history. I had a $7.50 fajita from our old buddies from Texas with the giant skillet and Brenda had a $7 Philly steak sandwich. That coupled with a couple of $4 ice creams and a $4.50 Lemonade shake-up and a $3.50 beer, (at least it was Shiner but still...) and my money clip was empty. One of two days at the fair down. Sunday is Veterans day so we get in free. That is usually the day Brenda and I go.

Got my PM from Ulrich, saddened but understand. I am glad he will still peek in the windows at least. Maybe when winter sets in he'll stop in to warm up and for some coffee and play catch up. (or sooner)

Ya know, after thinking about it for a bit, Ok ok, I'll try and keep it short. Do you realize that the same subjects that get discussed out in the forum that ends in, or at least contains, arguments and what not, get discussed in here. The same subjects with the same differing opinions. The same novice weathering or structure building looked at by the experienced and commented on and suggestions made by all. The difference, not a cross word is said. Not one insult or put down by anyone. Proof it can be done.

Garry- I wasn't aware of those troubles. That was before my time here. But allow me to say I'm glad that you survived and your presence here, like the others, is one of the main reasons I stay in this forum.

Ray- After reading your post here I went to the Scenery thread. I wouldn't fret over it none. Most people know you and I know that working on being a Master Modeler isn't for the "buying" kind. You have to want to build and I'm doing more of it myself but I'll still buy. Maybe not as many trees, I've got some naked trees and some of that WS stuff, Fine Leaf Foliage. I also am keeping an eye on the twigs that appearin my yard. Anyway like I said there, I didn't take it in an offensive way. Of course I've heard you opinions on having fun and enjoying the hobby a few times before so maybe I was predisposed to my interpretation but I don't think so. Like Jeff said some people just look for things to pick at. Possibly the mod knew what you meant but saw the probability of someone taking it and running. Interesting thought on the Photobucket idea. I have to use the old uploader to post myself and I have IE 8. You're right it might be between this site and Photobucket. Not us. What you said to Jim about what is acceptable in your modeling then and now is true for me from before I got hooked up with you guys and now.

There is a lot of good examples in here, you guys make it look so easy until I pick up that brush!

Robby- Sorry to hear they locked you out. Here's a tissue, think I see a tear. No wait, I think it's sweat. Um, you really thought the wife would give up the bathroom. (shakes head) I know, I know, she said the basement was yours. My wife says I can do whatever I want too, but I always ask. Safer that way because sometimes you know, I didn't understand what she meant. DunceLaugh

DerJohn- A wink's as good as a nudge to a blind man. Know what I mean? Nudge Nudge! Laugh

Barry- 48' long SIDE of N scale layout??? WOW!

Dick- I agree. As I progress in this obsession, er I mean hobby, I find myself in need, oh let's face it, want, of items that are not available. So I have started to scratch build more buildings the latest is a Whataburger. So far, I haven't found one. If they made one I would buy it, because the kit manufacturers do a better job than I do. However, I am getting better and my scratch buildings are coming out better. Each time I build a building I learn something I could have done construction wise to improve the structure. So far nothing is elaborate enough that someday I can't make another one with the skills I will hopefully have bettered. However, if I see a kit that is right up the alley for what I have in mind I will still buy the kit and hope for forgiveness. (only kidding). (snicker)

Have a Great Day!

Hey Ray!! Did ya see where Jeff scratch built the sander dust catcher attachment? That's a modeler!! (slap, slap, smack, slap, smack, thump, thump, thump, slap) OW! Ow,ow, ow, ow, ow, Zoe stop it! hahaha, who knows. I don't think we have to read To Kill a Mockingbird this year.

Actually, I quite enjoyed Tequila Mocking, or something like that. First one done read

lol, yeah man.

Well, went to orientation, and now I know how the heck I'm gonna get to all of my classes, just need to figure out the bell schedule, as we'll be on a different one than normal for the first eleven days (homeroom). and then they said we need to report to homeroom the first thing first day, which ain't even listed on the bell schedule. Oh well, I'll figure it out.

Good news, at least 4 of my textbooks are stay at home, so I only need to take 2 the first day, hoping my spanish2 book can stay home as well, though I didn't see the teacher today.

you and I know that working on being a Master Modeler isn't for the "buying" kind.

Absolutely!  I am privileged to know (and be friends with) 3 Master Model Railroaders.  All three are far more concerned with if others are having FUN with the hobby than how "good" the work is.  That is until they come to judge for merit points.  And that is how it should be.  For me I don't know if I will ever live long enough to receive the honor of MMR, but I sure am having fun going through the process.  My model railroading friends run the gamut from the above mentioned people to a gentleman who lives about 4 miles from me who has a full basement of trains.  I mean a FULL basement, as in 1800 sq. feet of trains.  Most all of the track (HO) is hand laid (using matchsticks), and he makes his own locos.....  Of course he is the owner of Tiger Valley Models.... (Guil Mack).  Another has a fairly small O scale layout but with some of the wildest things I have ever seen.  He makes his own DCC throttles and has working couplers that he scratch builds.....  (Mouth hangs open in awe) and scenery to die for.  He is a Electrical Engineer retired from Kodak.  I also have a friend that lives a couple blocks from me who has 3 different scales on the same layout which consists of 3 ovals of track (one in each scale) and a couple sidings to store equipment.  Everything is set out (don't think it is nailed down....) on a sheet of cardboard" grass and runs through a plywood "tunnel" and then comes out the other side and goes round and round..... He loves to watch all three run at the same time.  Yep he has just as much fun as I do in the hobby.  Just goes about it different.  I had a good time visiting his layout a couple months ago.  The hobby can and should run the gamut of possibilities.

Hm. Both threads appear to be gone. Just as well. I was expecting to get an E-mail from the mods anyway. The second scenery subject was not going well and the Modulators one looked like a fishing trip for an argument. I bit. Though I thought I responded in a civil way, after I came in here and while responding I kept thinking about the reply I had made and actually the mods beat me to the draw. I was going to ask them to remove my post because upon reflection it was just adding fuel to the fire no matter how I worded it. I don't know if my responses were the last or not. Didn't get a chance to see, don't care.

On a lighter note and of more concern, I found my drywall mud and am now going to add the new road in Gold Creek. Don't ask how I could loose the tub of drywall stuff.Whistling

I've also decided after having a black piece of cardboard for a blacktop road between the Pizza/Bait/gas and garage and the post office/general store/bar, (an idea of using cardboard mockups to see if I like it or not I picked up from DerJohn thank you.) I believe I want a dirt road instead. One of those traveled dirt roads that are actually heavily traveled unpaved roads. I think they are quaint. Did I say quaint?

Sounds like great people. However if asked their opinion on the hobby and how they approach it, I would expect nothing less than similar to what you said. That would not be a slam towards how anyone else feels just their opinion on how they feel. I'm also sure that if you or I asked them how to make realistic trees from stuff laying around they would be a wealth of information and eager to help. If however we had purchased store bought trees and asked how to make them look better, they would be more than willing to help with that equally. More than likely without turning up their noses and saying something other than possibly a better brand to buy or a casual comment about how easy it may be to make your own after a bit of practice and the money savings involved. But neither with a condescending tone nor an insistence that you aren't a model railroader. Just something to ponder. They love model railroading and the variety of ways to do it, as it should be. Some people really don't have the time or talent or dexterity to scratch build everything and they (I)shouldn't be excluded from a hobby because of the way it used to be. Under that notion none of us should be driving cars. We should be walking or riding horses because that's the way it used to be. I left out commuting on trains because we all agree that we should have more trains!

(walks off singing ".... And the sons of Pullman Porters and the sons of engineers, ride their fathers magic carpets made of steel. Mothers with their babes asleep, rockin to the gentle beat and the rhythm of the rail is all they feel")

Afternoon folks.

I'll have the Asian Chopped Chicken Salad for lunch please Chloe!

Jim, thanks for the image tip workaround for viewing while the MR online community works out the kinks.

Todd, now it all makes sense! Confused

Hey Garry, glad to be of assistance with the razzing..... Whistling

Ray, nothing you said was insulting to me, in fact I was shocked when that thread got locked up. I just shook my head when I saw what had happened that the mods took it down. Sounds like your garden is in full swing too! My tomato crop this year was lacking.

Hey CN Charlie, glad to see you too! Dinner

Dick and Ray both brought up a good point. And for me the scratch building debate really don't seem like a real debate to me. It's just like making decisions with cooking. Are you going to make your cake from scratch, from a box mix, or just buy one already baked and decorated? It all depends on the circumstances, if I have the time, the knowledge and the will, then I go ahead and make a cake recipe from scratch. If I am running short on time then I buy a cake mix, and if I'm in a real hurry and the pocket book can handle it then I'll get one already done. Same goes with modeling, will I scratch build that structure from wood and plastic, or will I get a kit and put it together, or just go and buy it already built up? All depends on the circumstances!

You all have a great weekend!

We are going to a fish fry pool party tomorrow! Might even catch some fish! Dunce Whistling Chef Dinner

Hello everybody.

Todd and Barry... Thanks for the remarks. Ryan, are you the assistant razzer? ...or how about "vice-razzer"?.... Ooops. no that might be taken wrong.....can't have that..... assistant razzer will do.

Ray... I never saw the thread in question. I can not possibly imagine you could say something offensive. I think there are people who look for stuff to be offended about.

Dick ... I would prefer not changing the grade. Talk to the un-civil engineers, however.

Jim CG ... Chuck's Depot tomorrow? ... My friend, Gus, might be there but I don't know. He is thinking of stopping there on his way here from Iowa. ...Chuck is holding an order for me for Gus to pick up.. It is....(are you ready to hear about it?)..a Digitrak Empire Builder Wireless starter set. ....ssssshhhhhh... it's a secret......Bridge Tom is staying with DC....

Sawyer..........I like the logo for SC Rail.

Good afternoon to all, I hope everyone is enjoying their FRIDAY. For all you guys still not retired, work harder, your SS deduction is the paycheck for all us ORF's..LOL  Ohh, and now you have to support DUKE who recently became an ORF.

TODD: Well stated my friend.

RAY: Those three MRR Craftsmen that you speak of, are the REAL DEAL. They encourage the rest of us who are learning and having fun and enjoyment.

It IS indeed a fun and a great hobby. AND, speaking for myself, and I know for all of you guys and gals in the Diner, we also get to meet ( at least via email and occasionally in person like DUKE on his trip East several years ago, and J.R. at the Big E) some of the greatest people on earth...the REAL DEAL! I enjoy reading the comments from each and every one of you. I may not reply or comment back to each of you, but that is because my memory is not what it once was to remember each comment ,mea culpa, and my typing sucks ( I use the H&P method, Hunt and Peck) .

GARRY: I agree, and I really don't like changing the grade either. I do have an alternative however. This layout encompasses TWO adjacent rooms, which have an opening ( tunnel ) at each end of the common wall between the two rooms. So I think I can keep the same grade, just extend the main line LONGER to give me chance to gradually bring the 2.5% grade down.

MRR: It's tough trying to model an area in the mountains, New Hampshire, the Maine Central Mountain Division, where the elevation from North Conway up through Bartlett, and Crawford Notch, rises 640 feet. This is a scale of 640/78 = 8.2 FEET  for HO scale. So, one would think, just build a Helix right? Well how much room do you give up to build a Helix? 6 feet in diameter? That takes a lot or real estate away from the layout. I may have to build a Helix in the adjacent room so that I can adjust the altitudes of the tracks, otherwise, how do I climb back up to the higher elevation at the OTHER end of the main line?? I would have to start the climb as soon as I get down to scale 640 foot level all over again and may not have enough run length to keep grade at 2.5% max. Building a Helix seems to be a challenge to me, and buying one already made is not cheap...so, as RAY, JOHN, TODD and others have stated, you build it yourself. Anyone ever build a Helix??????????????? I did see a garage door elevator system in a past MRR magazine a few issues ago, that seemed like a nice idea too, a little involved, but nonetheless a nice idea.

SilverSpike

That was a GREAT example Ryan. And you also made me hungry dog gone it!!!

Well, time to get back to work, my 14 year old Grandson and I and the 3 year old Grandson, spent the morning clearing the walk path through the woods to where the kids take the school bus in the morning, about 3/4 of a mile. This is a nice shortcut, eliminates a big hill down to the road which is rather dangerous due to heavy country road traffic at the times the kids would be on this secluded road with no sidewalks. The Ice Storm back in December really made a mess with fallen limbs etc. and new growth with all the rains we have received.

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!  Well here's a update on the layout expansion.  Its about done!!!  Its level, doesn't wobble, and I even cut out where people can get to the bathroom Whistling.

I still gotta add the wood for the backdrop, and I have three 2x4 sheets left (notice in the picture).  I was thinking of making a BIG yard with that one section where the scrap yard was.  Maybe use up two sheets for that.  I know I have a lot more space now than I did.

Its also going to be a lift out.  I just gotta make sure it will work.   I will also have my upper train still going.  I'm probably done with it for the day.

 Everybody have a good afternoon.

2 pc dark BBQ chicken and fries with some cole slaw and a Dr Pepper please.

Garry- I looked up the word vice and as Jed Clampett said when he was made Vice President of the bank, I'm not sure I like that. I'll get back to you after I've decided if I'm offended or not.Clown

Jeff- It came rolling out from under the seat of my truck. I still do not remember putting it in the truck. Last thing I recall was putting it under the layout to use again. Now, I probably won't be able to find the putty knifes I had found the other day. They were there under the layout where the mud was supposed to be. I hope I didn't move them.

Sawyer- I didn't notice the logo until Garry mentioned it. Looks professional. Great job!

Dick- I know what you mean. I see that unless I try and take over more of the basement, and Robby can tell you how that will go over, I won't be able to get what I want in the space I have even with compressing unless I have one train 12 cars long be in 2 or 3 towns at once. I was looking at in the future a second level myself but as you pointed out to make a helix large enough to easily handle long cars I would be giving up space I don‘t want to. I'm not sure I would want the garage door setup in the magazine for me. If something were to go wrong, and it probably will with my luck, it could end up with an entire train on the floor with me sitting in the middle of the pile crying like a baby.Laugh

Now that have some road material in a tub...... I should have just enough time to put in a road and then get cleaned up for work.

Now ya did it Todd.  Guess what will be running through my head the rest of the day?

All of you that mentioned the locked threads......  Some very good insights.  I guess that is why I like to hang around here in the diner.  Great bunch of folks!

Robby, the benchwork is looking good!

I'm waiting for the glue to dry before taking a few photos of some new scenery above the old tunnel.  Then I have to do some shopping and head up to Canandaigua to go out for dinner with my sister.

RYAN,,,,,, glad to hear your dad's doing good and pray it continues. How'd your son do with baseball tryouts??

Last Thursday, Mother said she wanted to get the H out of Dodge. She's had a lot of stress at work n some round here too. Friday evening she decided, we was going to Evansville. After checkin motels she found a Ramada in Henderson KY cheap. Saturday morning we finished packin and was gone by 8:30. We had a good time, went to H-L, she found a train candy mold and a train cupcake puzzle pan set. I got some people n a couple paint brushes. Then we found ABC hobbies, I found a Cornerstone gas station and a Dutch Masters cigar car, both cheaper than up here. We stop at a couple flea market type places, she found some odds n ends she'd been looking for. Sunday went to the Audubon museum and to the gambling boat. I don't know how much she won, all she'd tell me ws the trip didn't cost much in the end. All in all it was a very worthwhile trip, she's been in a much better mood since. We also did alittle rail fanning in Evansville Sunday and caught a couple trains.

That last one was in a neighborhood we really shouldn't have been in. While I was taking pictures , Mother seen a guy standing in his doorway watching us with a gun in his hand. Needless to say we left.  I also got one of Cryo-trans refer car.

Got some pics down at INRD's Palestine yard I'll post laters.

Best check the canner and get some of the mess cleaned up. I'll catch ya'll laters maybe.

I guess your bucket wasn't the same size as mine. Five gallons. That's kinda hard to misplace but I managed it.

Hoo wee! Man, am I worn out! I've been working down at the parent's place all day. First, mowed the grass. Second, help fix a water leak, Third, had to do some work on the new tractor. Fourth, had to vacuum up lawn clippings and dump them on the burn pile.

Sheesh--Get home and find all manner of stuff be flapping about regarding the scratchbuild scenery thread(s) ---or what have you. I'm starting to think of a new title for scratchbuilder---lest the phrase becomes a hot button----that of "marginalized other---"Mischief

Anyhoooo--got call from my photog buddy---we's be out on a abandoned ROW hunt---he's found a few more to investigate-----

Had another hot day today of straightening out our gardens in the back---the lake/pond thing is still there and there is a small spring attached to it---the source seems to be somewhere up a ridge near here---so who knows how long this thing be here---

Chloe, I'll have a coffee and a toasted western sammich if you will---thanks---I'll be at the RC checking out Todd's new collection of bumps/bruises----

Got my PM from Ulrich, saddened but understand. I am glad he will still peek in the windows at least. Maybe when winter sets in he'll stop in to warm up and for some coffee and play catch up. (or sooner)

I think it is a kind of break from the blastfurnace heat that some of the threads on this forum can get to at times----although nowhere near some of the dang unmoderated ones I would go to in the 1990's these topics do raise the temper with some people----(MMM---interesting thing this---temper and temperature---both get hot on ocassion---) And in this case---always a good idea when one is not well----kind of makes me wish my dad did this----

TMarsh

After reading stein's PM I think that we just got the tail end of the dang thing---the parties that were mentioned did not include Ray, but his AFR might've set some of the more---shall I say--PICULOUS one's off and there might have been even more stuff falling out thenWhistling It is all under the bridge anyhooo

TMarsh
Barry- 48' long SIDE of N scale layout??? WOW!

Full basement --- even includes space under 2 car attached garage. The overall length of the thing runs about 65'!----and the thing I like about it is that the stairwell( which is the elevator in this case) is situated at the far end of the basement---hence allowing for even more space-----

Which reminds me----

Robby: How the beepity beep did you end up with a bathroom such that a triangle corner is on the layout?----that has me scratching my noggin!Sigh

Evenin' folks!

Zoe just a cup of decafe for me.... cream and sweetleaf in it, thanks.

Barry..... AFR???Confused   My AFR???  Huh?  Haven't figured that one out...  Applied Fuel Resorces?  As Found Report?  Automatic Feature Rendering?  Average Failure Rate?????  Ya lost me!

Got home from dinner with my Sister the Artist....  Always an experience.  Went to a fish place just outside of Canandaigua,  Captain Yogi's,  Place was packed.  First we went inside the place so we could harass the cook who is my sister's mailman, and used to be on my Boy Scout Troop Committee several years back.  He lives in Geneva, but works as a cook at the restaurant.  In order to be fully effective I work one of my Despair.com demotivational shirts.  Had to pick something that was mild enough to actually have my sister allow me to wear it but still make a statement (so to speak).  I choose the, "Points of View" shirt. http://www.despair.com/pointsofview.html  I wanted to wear this one but I knew she would spent the whole evening telling how negative I always am (she is the only one who has ever said that....)  Whistling  The shirt I really wanted to wear is one that says: How can I politely extract myself from this conversation!  Unfortunately, It would ruin most family get togethers for the next decade or so.  I stuck with the points of view shirt. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Anyway, after harassing the cook we ordered dinner.  I had the Friday evening Fish Fry which featured some endangered species.  I think the mailman had to go and catch the fish before he could fix it for me, or at least it seemed like that because it took about an hour from the time we ordered until we got served....  I did mention the the place was packed....  yes.  Anyway I ran into a couple people I know from Geneva.  One lady I worked with at school and another lady who was one of my students many years ago and whose Mom was a close friend of my late wife and who died about the same time of a completely different disease.......  She had benign brain tumors that although benign, eventually proved fatal.  Her daughter has the same problem, in her late 20's.......

Hope you are all having a great evening!

MIKE: Totally agree on Grandkids, they are such a big help, we have 9, 5 boys and 4 girls ages 3 to 20. The 3 year old follows me around no matter where I go, now his mother has to put bells on the screen door because he hears my lawn tractor up on the top of the hill and out the door he goes, just like this morning. Me and the 14 year old grandson were working in the woods and this little guy shows up saying, " I help??" I am convinced that God placed little grandchildren here to help us retired people have some real pleasure in the later years.  Thanks for posting the train photos Mike, great shots as usual.

JEFF: You worked far too hard today, watch your Glucose level son!! Get some rest and keep some eats nearby the bed in case your level goes low.

ROB: When doing layouts, TWO rooms are key to a woman: Kitchens and Bathrooms.

PC, AWESOME! Where was this?

Was down at the local firehall's carnival. I was the' Butter Boy" for the Clam/Mussel/Corn/Soda tent. I found out today delivering hot food while taking peoples money, melting butter, pouring it into small cups and running across the five acre grounds to get more butter while we were running on a quarter stick and a prayer at the same time is a lot harder than you think. Even melting the butter in retired stovetop coffee percolators was a dance, trying to keep up with demand while making sure that all the butter was melted, or when the demand was low, keeping the butter warm and not burning it. The stove we were using had three settings, all the way on, really super close close all the way on (Barely a difference), or off. Dead I survived though. BTW, the stars tonight are breathtaking, knee jellying, and ALL OUT AWESOME at the same time. The tree frogs, crickets, and what else is out there are singing their hearts (or whatever they have) out too.

"So we loaded the Half-ton of garbage into the back of a red VW Microbus with shovels and rakes and implements of destruction, and headed on down to the city dump."

I love that line

I'll see who comes in.

Good morning all,

Been an interesting week at work for me, the boss found out I’m into railroads so I’ve been getting all the railroad bridge projects that come into the office.  A certain RR wanted to build a bridge over a small channel and my first question was: do you own the property the bridge will set on?  The answer was “yes we are almost sure we own that land”

This will be a entertaining job if nothing else happens.

Goooooooooo morning.  I just got off of work.  The first night back since my wrist injury.  Its doing better, but slowly.

Barry........Maybe these pictures will help.  I guess I should have added them first.

Duke......I have some braces (metal braces), and several screws into the legs.  She's not moving Mischief.

Rob......Its easy to expand, but its more the track plan.  I want to make sure it has what I'm looking for.

Dick........I agree.  I did get the basement, but a bathroom had to get in the way Grumpy.

Here's some pictures.  Maybe this will help.  It has the cement beam, and the bathroom.  Which is a loooong ways off from getting done.  I also added a shot of how much space you will have to walk by.  *Sorry if the pictures are bad*
