Evenin' all.I'll take a piece of Texas Sheet cake and a glass of milk. Too tired last night to enjoy it.

The fair was a washout. Literally. Everything was fine and humid just like the fair is supposed to be then after the Dockdogs.com show, it started to drizzle, then rain, then drizzle, then rain, then drizzle. Oh well had a decent time in spite. Didn't spend near as much as I usually do so yippee! Especially after I won this load of vending machines on the bay just before we left this morn.

I see we are trying another weathering thread, I hope this one stays around.

Now as I prepare to make my departure let me say too all you good folks who are sweating in the heat. We started out hot and humid today but when we left the fairgrounds at approx 5:45 the temperature was a chilly 69F

 Chris.....I forgot to add this.  The wrist is MUCH better.  I would say its about 90%.  I used it all day doing the layout, and its much better than a few days ago.

Getting some rain out now and the temps have to the mid 70's. Chace of rain everyday till Friday with highs in the mid to upper 80's

Well made through another jamboree, 5 hours of kid football. It was a hot humid 89, but atleast we had some clouds and a good breeze and the boys looked ok for, plenty of hard hitting n tackling..

TODD,,,, seems the went by without notice the cooler than normal temps and all the rain, but I'm ready for the games to start kinda.

We're still playing a trip up your way, just don't know when yet. I know we'll be up the Chatom train show n swap meet in Nov [weather permitting].

LEE,,,, those plans would be great, but I'm past that stage on building now, thanks anyway.

GARRY,,,,, we thought bout getting ahold of you, but didn't have the number with us Maybe the next trip.

DICK,,,,, we just haven't been out much this year and a few times I'd forgot the camera ta home and missed some shots. I didn't know Trains Magazine had a contest, may have to check it out. I have won or tied the photo contest over on Train Board and had a couple chosen for railfan photos of the week. No prizes, just an honor.

Grumpy - to the Diner, but if I'm remembering correct, I think you've been in before (an edition or two or three ago...), correct? Welcome back, and have a cup on me!

Todd, on the 'scratchbuilding scenery' topic, I do have a Scenic Express Super Trees kit that when I get more time (and a place for the mess(TM - sorry, Fergie!)), I'll be starting on. Now that is about like scratchbuilding for me. Our club had a 'tree-making' night (actually, two) for making some for our club layout, and there's a lot involved in that (IMHO). Anybody else who's built those and has some tips for me, for when I get around to starting? By the way - have your bruises from Zoe started to fade away yet? And do you still have track of that tub of drywall mud? (I see you're an old Arlo fan from way back, eh?

Whether we actually have better manners in here than out in the other forums or not (or if it's just that Zoe, Chloe, Janie and/or Flo will take the frying pan to us if we start getting rude),but the actual behavior in here is that we treat each other more politely. Heard something like that this morning, as I recall - "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." Sounds practical to me...

Robby - great to see that you figured out a way to, uh... "leave access to the bathroom" (and expand your layout). Looking forward to seeing how you decide to use all that new space. By the way, one silly question (for us guys, that is..): Will the bathroom door close when you've completed the layout?

Rob, if you hear/heard of someone with a tar trailer model in HO, please let me know - I have these nifty W-S 'Roofers', but I figure I should by rights have a tar trailer on the ground with some silly piping going up to the roof to feed those tar buckets more efficiently... Your wife does find more things to think of for her layout - by myself, I can't seem to think of those nearly as much or as many as she does. I picked up a couple or three of the NuComp kits, and I've started one (the 'office') using epoxy (but all I have is 15 or 30 minute kind, MUST get the 5 minute type at H-L this week...). Unpainted resin, kinda an off-white/dingy cream color. Hope that helps. Oh (something I, uh, learned) - paint the walls first, then glue the 'window glass' inside, and then glue the walls together. (I'll be playing like I'm a ship-builder type, trying to slide the w-glass in through the doorways and then getting them glued inside the window openings...) See Dick's signature about learning from others' mistakes... Oh, I'll take a photo or two of my 'office' (unpainted, partly assembled) and post them tomorrow morning for you to see.

Lee - that RR sounds like either A) they have so much property they have rights for, that nobody has bothered to check for years, or B) they are descendants of the "Robber Barons" and are still used to just commandeering the land if they *don't* happen to own rights for this particular spot of land... Should indeed be an entertaining job, I'm sure! Thanks for the emails, and sent you another one back this evening earlier. By the way, did you get that deadfall when you were at the LHS?

Inch, I'd say - whether it was texting, talking with friends in the car on on the phone - that teenager needs to focus more on her driving when she's behind the wheel, or she may be lucky to reach 17! Hope Deb's car doesn't develop anything that interferes with its running. Will your insurance check out the car for you? Thanks for the warning on the windmill base; I'll watch that extra careful when I'm putting mine together.

Todd - And just what's wrong with wanting to get trains cheap for me and my buddies?! I do consider the whole thing to be two parts - 1) Walthers, the shipping companies, and anyone else between me and my MRR stuff I want, are wanting to get the money from my wallet to theirs. 2) I want to keep as much of my money as possible in my wallet (for other things, or for more MRR stuff later). Therein lies the tug-o-war...

ACCHH---now THAT is normal--- Western Fair---usually held in the first/second week in September, is guaranteed to have 3/4 of it rainy and almost cold---at least very cool. the rest maybe a ittle sunny but on the whole just plain dull

Jeff and Robby- We'll see I hope they learned from the last time (or two) That kind of "criticism" isn't appreciated around here. Advice and tips on the work are accepted but when it goes so far as to need a "thick skin" then maybe they should just keep quiet.

I'd like to see the thread grow and become something that has to start new every 50 pages or so, but if it doesn't work, I know I can present my attempts at modeling and weathering in here and get just as good advice and tips as I can anywhere on the net.

Jim- The "crew" may have something to do with it but I think it's the people who come here that is the reason. I mean think about it. This diner is totally everything the meanies are against. Even though we talk about MR we also waste bandwidth, repeat questions that have been asked before and ask simple novice questions that we could look up in a book or google. Difference is, we don't mind. Someone has a question and someones glad to help. We like to talk MR and visit also. We aren't all business and mainly, we are friendly and like the neighborly side of MRing also. Let me ask you this, when you go to your club meetings, are you allowed to ask how someone is? Can't you talk about what you have done that day? I know the point is Model Railroading and I'm sure you talk about that, so do we, but I‘d be surprised if there was a big sign that said "all conversations MUST pertain to Model Railroading. I‘m also fairly certain that a question has been asked many times by different people over the time that could be looked up elsewhere without getting a response that says the question has been asked and answered I‘m sorry you weren‘t here but too bad so sad look it up yourself. If you were that type of person I don't think you'd come in the diner and if you did you probably wouldn't stay long. Certain types of people tend to find each other and hang out. Kind of like Ocelots. I look at this as kinda like a virtual clubroom with individual layouts. That's some Tug-O-War you got there. Now when you add in the utility companies the gasoline companies the food companies and the rest, that becomes an all out bigtime tug-o-war with the purse strings!

Barry-But do you think you could keep a straight face during THAT lecture. There have been a few memorable fairs where the temps were nice, but for the most part sounds like the normal weather for your fair is the same as ours, either sweltering hot or rainy. And if the rain happens to stop during the day, the sun comes out the temps go up and you know what happens then.

Chris- That's it buddy, get it out of your system here. That's what we're here for. Well not really but it's an interesting sideline, too bad we don't get paid for it. Use that word with freedom, that's what it's for, to be used not to be stuck in some dictionary somewhere like the word sentient.

Wow, everybody turned in early. High today 81F with a 60% chance of rainfall and scattered T-Storms some possibly severe. Rain possible over an inch. We got about a half inch yesterday. Starting to hear occasioal rumbles in the distance.

Not much planned today, bookwork for the church, maybe some MRRing, then work at 5.

Inch- I'll keep an eye out for the show.

Well I guess I won't be leaving the computer logged on today, I thinks I'll be shuttin down sometime. Sounds like some early mornin T-storms firing up, startin to rain and it's getting noisier.

 Good morning.

It's 75 and clear. The high will be in the low 90's and there's a chance of rain.

Last night I got the bulk of the old backdrop down. I tried being careful with it but you know how it is with bulky things like that. I didn't damage any structures but I still managed to derail just about everything. The twin SDP40F's are still on the track though. It would take a pretty good punch to knock those heavy beasts over. That's somewhat over 4 pounds of dead weight between them. The task this morning will be to get the backdrop broken down and packed out to the trash. Later this morning I have to go down to the parent's place and order a new inspection cover gasket for the pool pump. The old one is still good but it's getting progressively more difficult to lock the lid down so it has an airtight seal. Also have to see about mowing my sister's yard. She said she was going to get the gas for it yesterday.

Good Morning All,

     High only only in the mid 70's today but the humidity is already so high that I'm drenched. We've been busy on the house sanding painting staining and sealing whatever we see not quite finished. Of course now that we're to the end of the project we've run over budget (no surprise there) but at least the end is in sight. A bit of plumbing and ductwork plus a fair bit of electrical hookup yet we're not doing, but the second floor is done and the rest is nearly there.

    You've all been so prolfic that I've not been able to keep up the last few days but I did want to add to the comments on the tone here as opposed to the big room outside. Being able to drop in here and comment about what we're doing and our times has been valuable beyond words. The concern and care for each other is real and and no different than a real coffee shop with regulars face to face. Although I've not met most of you, I consider you all my friends and very much value the time we spend here.

Yes. The friendship in here is real that is for sure. There is a sense of community one does not find in the larger forum.  Good morning.  Seems like another hot day.  I believe the high will be around 89.

 I need to work on the layout some more today.  I need to add some braces on the legs.  I just need them a bit more sturdy.  Go to a LHS and get a train car to weather.  Gotta make some extra money (house taxes due ).

 Inch..... I added about 5 feet to the layout (12x8) to a (12x13).  I finally got the right measurement this time .  The area the of the layout the basement is in is about 12ft by 20ft (give or take a few feet long wise).   The braker box is in one corner, and the bathroom is in the other.  Thats why I had to stop.  Can I expand more, no.  Mainly in the inside of the layout.

 Jim and Chris...... I would like to add a small stand up shower in the basements bathroom.  The toilet already works, and it  needs a small sink.  I was looking at making it about a 7ftx7ft or close to that.  Just a real small/working bathroom.  The door would open inward, but the wife wants one of those doors that slides into the wall.  That takes up even less space.   I think the wife is seeing a "luxury bathroom" in her mind .

 Todd........ I'm sure the new weathering post will be locked.  One of the MTW guys have already made he way into it.  We will see thou.

About the tone in here. Different kind of people we are. We have our differing opinions, but also respect the opinions of others. That's all it takes to get along, my way isn't the only way. It may be right for me but not necessarily for you and when someone makes a suggestion, that's the way it's given and that's the way it's taken. If I tell Robby I think an inside opening door on a bathroom that size is a bad idea and he responds it doesn't matter to him because, well it just doesn't, they're will be no "know-it-all" or "ungrateful" thought from either one of us. Just a suggestion or exchage of opinions. Nothing more.

Robby- I thought a name looked familiar but I wasn't sure for certain. I hope we can ignore him, or them, if it gets that way and let the mods deal with it. If not, well I guess we can try again, and again. Or like I said, I can learn in here just as well. I probably will use both places if everybody doesn't mind. I already posted a "where I am now" picture. It's already on the wall here so I won't pain everyone with another!

Heard something going on outside this morning....  Verison was busy replacing the "Utility" pole across the street.  Turns out it actually is a "telephone" pole.    The leaner was actually snapped off in the ground.  It had rotted through and last winter it snapped.  The 2 poles are now lashed together waiting for the NYSEG to move their guy line to the new pole.  I would assume that Verison will be back to take the old pole as soon as that is done.

Flo I'll just have a bowl of raisin bran cereal and a cup of dark roast.  I be at the rivet counter waiting to see who else shows up.

Doggone right on that one Jeffrey!  Sometimes I used to not mow my own yard just because I didn't get any gas....   Sometimes that went on for weeks at a time!  Besides you have a backdrop to replace, don't you?  First things first ya know!

Robby:  I lived in a house quite a few years ago that had the dangdest bathroom in the basement. The entire room could not have been more than 4'X5' but it had the toilet, a sink and a "stand up shower" in it---the thing was that the floor was actually done in such a way that it looked like it was a shower stall type of floor----that is the kicker. The ENTIRE bathroom WAS the SHOWER!!!

That was a house built for a multi-tasker!

Ray - sorry to hear about your anniversary of missing your wife, but good to hear you had family for support. I'd guess that you had a definite keeper there, and sure you have a number of wonderful memories from your time together. The good memories of loved ones don't usually fade very quickly, I've found.

Looked like yesterday was fairly productive for a lot of you Diners - even Chris managed to get an article done while talking the finer points of fire engines... Loved the ROW pics and Inch's pics from his & Debbie's trip, as well as those ones of the verrryyyyy weathered buildings that Barry(?) posted. Barry - want to post those as examples in the weathering thread? (Nah, better not egg things on...)

Robby, good to hear your wrist is doing better now - make sure you allow it to get fully healed before tackling too much stuff at work.

We're gonna be humid and hot - like August usually is here  - today, about 90 F and right now it's 70 percent humidity and  already 84 F (29 C). Our morning weather guy has a sense of humor and had 'Clarence the weather dog' in his background graphics, mentioning the "dog days of August"... Hey, at least he's trying to make the weather a bit more fun!

So Todd, I think you/we have pegged us pretty well - *that* we break about all the usual forum rules (including bandwidth), and don't care *that* much whether someone does things the same way or not (and don't get our 'cottons' in a wad, so to speak...) - yep, you have us down about right! Uh, sentient? Duh, what's that?

Oh, our district fair is coming up, and odds are - like most of the ones you Diners have already mentioned - there will be rain on at least one or two of the 8 days or so that it runs. But like the ones *that* have been mentioned, mostly drizzle-type rain, no heavy downpours.

Almost forgot - PC, thanks for that link on the whole 'Rain' performance; excellent and amazing piece there! What've you been doing over the weekend - any rides with the CFO?

***Jim, no luck finding a Tar trailer yet. Sounds like you enjoy making model building as challenging as possible. If I had to place windows inside after the fact, I'd leave them out make it an abandoned building. Good Luck with that!

***Barry, [4'X5' but it had the toilet, a sink and a "stand up shower" in it]....that would be a rather common size in Hong Kong. One of my brothers has lived there for many years and has plenty of stories.

Ooo Rob- just had a thought, check out military models for a water buffalo (trailer) a bit of paint, some styrene rod the size of sprayer arms or some thread for a hose and voila! Tar trailer.

Flo I'll have one of those RBFs to tide me over until dinner.  I'll go sit at the front booth for a bit and watch the tracks outside.  Why? I don't know?  Too dangerous right now to sit at the Rivet Counter what with threads about weathering and "Collectors vs Model railroaders goin' on outside.  yep, I'll just sit and watch.

I spent some time this morning starting to clean up the workshop area of the basement.  Man!  Have I let it get to be a major mess out there.....

 I got 9 more pieces of poster board up for a total of 12 pieces thus far. Now I'm gonna rest for a while. When next I work on it I'll be working on the east side of the layout (been working on the west and north sides) where it's a little smoother going. After all the poster board is up I'll go back and put some glue into the seams.
