Afternoon folks!
Chloe, I'll have some Jalapeno Poppers for lunch today, and a biggie RBF too!
Jim, the wedding party took it all in stride and were happy to see him walk off the alter. Good luck with the bills.
Chris, the only insight I can give you about Fred and his burgers is that many folks in the NOLA area will add some Worchestershire sauce to the ground meat with some chopped onions and some spices too before grilling them, but everyone has their own concoction and personal flavor.
Robby, I don't like temp jobs either, you are better off anyway with not getting that one. And thanks for the short tutorial on your weathering technique, really nice to get that special in the Diner.
Garry, glad you like the Po-Boy, and yes, the discussions lf late have been a bit beefy!
And hey Garry, cool link to the AAR site. Thanks!
Nik.n, Blazing Saddles is a classic! Love those lines too, and they have a few railroad scenes too in that movie.
Bama, nice pics you got there, and the trains are cool too!
Charlie, yup, been there and done that too many times to remember!
Dick, wow, you got your hands full in the retirement there. Congrats on the 182 and the BP! I took a few days off work last week doing "The List" and found out I need much more time to get it all done!
Jeff, like the G&D boxcar!
Todd, you know Popeye's was started by Al Copeland of New Orleans in the 1970's. At the time it was the best fried chicken in town. He bought out Church's in the 1980's and then went bankrupt, sold all the assets to some company out of Atlanta. Diversified Foods still has the rights to sell the spices, sauces, red beans and rice to Popeye's. Here we have Bojangles Fried Chicken, which I have to say is actually better than Popeye's now.
Missed your post about Franklin, sorry to hear about that, pets are a large part of our family too! Thoughts and prayers.

Well here's the next step. I've been working on this car all day, and now I'm at a stopping point. I guess you can tell I'm not your "quick airbrush weathering guy".
Ok......................Today I added some rust pits, gashes, and streaks. First place I started was the "weld line" near the bottom of the car. I used a 3/0 paint brush. The rust color was a mix of "Raw Sienna, orange powder, and a drop of mineral spirits". Next was the rust pits. I used the same brush for this as well. I would lightly dab the brush for the pit. NOW....On the gashes "due to the door", I used a 10/0 brush. Its thinner. I would lightly pull the brush to the side to make a gash. *Now this isn't a prototype car, its more a fantansy car*. The ends were done the same way. Just lighty dabbed for the pits.
Then.......I went back with a darker oil/powder mix. "Raw Umber and a dark color rust". That gave the rust some depth. I just used the 3/0 brush for this step. Kinda went over ever rust/gash/pit with the dark mix. After that was dry I went back over the rust/gash/pits with severalpowders for more depth. Dark brown, dirt color, and black was used.
*After each step I would dullcote. Give it that protection, and gets it to dry quicker*. Tomorrow will be the roof, trucks, wheels, couplers, etc.
NOTE: I leave old trucks on the car so the car will sit on them, rather than the foot steps.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Good afternoon, Chloe? yep...the usual...yep, over at the RC...please 'n thankyou.
TODD: Very Sorry to hear about your furry pal. Please know Rerun and I are keeping you and him in our thoughts.
RYAN: Thanks! You may well have shed some light into Fred's secret!! He's around the Slidel/NOLA area...makes sense he'd go with the "local flavor." I know he puts spices (top secret) into the meat. Whatever he does, I'm sure he could turn a buck selling them. As for Popeye's Chicken, my in-laws were blown to Cedar Rapids by Katrina. Apparently, they've undergone withdrawal symptoms so bad, a few months ago they (and the wife) made the 50 mile trek to Waterloo...which has a Popeye's. Loving Wife managed to snag a few pieces for me...even cold, it was incredible! I think I'm going to have to see if the Quad Cities have any.
ROBBY P: Two words come to mind looking at the latest RailBox: "museum quality." I continue to be in awe. Thanks also for the ongoing tutorial, a bunch of us are appreciating it more than you know.
This morning I journeyed over to Solon to meet a man about Purple Martin birds. I got a tour of a bird condo, met a little feathered tennant who hasn't learned to fly just yet...neat little kid. Bird Man took me around town to point out other Purple Martin complexes, and introduced me to another Bird Man. I'm not quite sure what THAT editor is looking for...these special bird houses aren't anything new... some have been in place for 15 years. Will get clarification tomorrow at the weekly staff meeting. I also got "marching orders" from da Boss. He wants me to go to Des Moines Monday morning. The Solon High School baseball team obliterated their opponent 17-0 last night, earning a trip to the State Tournament. Lucky me...I get to cover day one. IF they win, they play again on Thursday...and Mr. Boss will go. IF they lose...one and done. I also have to spend a day at the Johnson County Fair sometime next week, was gonna do Monday...but haven't figured out how to be in two places at the same time yet. Mr. Boss "goofed" (his own admission) in getting press credentials, so not sure how I'm gonna get in Monday. I might be sneaking over a fence or tunneling in or something.
I'll have a seat here at the Rivit Counter while pondering what to do about THAT Purple Martin stuff...

Chris........I'm glad I'm helping you, and others out.
The funny things is. My wife messaged me (text message) "what are you doing" around 9:00am this morning. I said, "working on a train car". She messaged me agian later toady, oh about 2:00pm. "What are you doing?" I said, "a train car". "Still????", she said. I said "Yeah, its for the guys on the train website". I guess she doesn't know my second home is the basement.
Well guys, I got the numbers done on all my locos but my C-Liner and H-15-44. The C-Liner I'm not sure what I'm gonna do, and I need to glue the body handrails onto the H-15-44. All my locos have 2-digit numbers except the alcos, and I'm thinking about changing SCRail's company theme; from operating a bunch of main lines in SC to operating the former CPDR (freelanced) and also a bunch of abandoned branches etc. throughout SC. This will give me the excuse for the two-digit numbers and blue/black basic paint job.

Evenin' folks!
Hey Ryan! I just went and checked out that Jalapeno Poppers recipe. Gotta try that one of these days. While I was at your site I visited your "store" and not only decided to place an order, but was drooling over that beer chicken stuff. Can you direct me to the recipe for that? Looks like a winner for when I have the family over for a BBQ during August.
Flo I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a seat at the Rivet Counter.
I ended up starting to pack for camp and doing a bunch of odds and ends this afternoon. Still have at least 4 days of w**k to do before I leave for camp Sunday morning. A few days ago my old gas powered weed trimmer died. So, I decided to buy a battery powered one since my property is small (1/4 acre of yard). I wasn't sure I would like it, but it is a bit smaller, lighter, and much easier to handle than the old one. It also can get into places that the old one couldn't. Turns out it was a good choice, and is one less reason to have to drive over to the gas station. Got some big overgrown weeds taken down with it today as well.
Not much on the Model Railroad front today. Just got the room picked up a bit and ran the shop vac to get rid of the dirt down there. then brought the shop vac upstairs to use tomorrow on the floors.
Rob, hows the ear coming along. You haven't mentioned it since you started the meds. Hope that is a good sign.
Catch you all later.

We'll get there sooner or later!
Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, please. Just stopping briefly for a bit before I head back home. Got to get to bed a little earlier (so I can get up and going earlier in the a.m.); I'm a bit behind on progress notes and paperw**k at w**k.
Todd - sorry to hear about Franklin, but glad that his misery is done.
SilverSpike...Popeye's was started by Al Copeland of New Orleans in the 1970's... Diversified Foods still has the rights to sell the spices, sauces, red beans and rice to Popeye's. Here we have Bojangles Fried Chicken, which I have to say is actually better than Popeye's now.
Actually, Ryan (and Todd) there's a Popeye's right next door to the Panera Bread Co. (where my usual WiFi connection is). It's not very far from the interstate (I-55) here in Cape, so I'm sure they do enough business.
It's been pretty nice at w**k this week, as our supervisor has been out on vacation, and the rest of admin. types haven't been over to our end of the building (the "w**king end") much at all, and we haven't had a lot of crisis/walk-in people the past couple of days.
Jeff, Ryan beat me to the punch, I liked your photo of the G&D boxcar this morning, also!
Robby - thanks for the mini-tutorial (and great w**k on the boxcar, as is the usual when you do one)! And do you mean you haven't told your wife about your 'secret life' in the basement?
Barry - I'm sure you will have earned that vacation once you get to go take that time off. Now, so long as you get some decent weather by that time...
Went by Penney's to get another pair of Dockers (have had one pair that's in need of retiring, and another that may not be far behind), but they didn't have any of the color I like, in my inseam (34") and my waist size. Had my waist size, but too short, had my inseam, but not in my waist size. I don't know why I keep going in there - I've emailed JCP about their not carrying my size and also talked with sales clerks, but all I get is "We can order them from our catalog for you"... If I wanted to order them, I'd go to Land's End or JC Crew! Sheesh...
Need to decide where I'm going to have my uncoupler magnets located on the back of the current layout, so I can pull the track and bury them there. Need to do that first, before I do my wiring.
I'll see everyone tomorrow morning (I expect; my 8:00 client tends to miss appointments). Prayers continue for those needing comfort and/or healing of body, mind or soul.
Blessings,

For those who've held my son in their prayers, thank you! The docs came back today and said they feel that his scoliosis is quite acute and should not progress. He will need some physical therepy, but no braces and no surgery! We're all quite relieved!
Oh, and Robby........YOU DA MAN! That weathering is truely artwork!
Good evenin',
PC: Thanks for the laugh...sick as it was Sick humor is what kept me going in my paramedic days, so I appreciate it greatly! Also, very glad to hear good news about your son!!! Continued good wishes to him! To quote from a 1973 episode of "EMERGENCY!" titled Frequency: I'm gonna "send out good vibes!"
ROBBY P and ULRICH: I wandered around the rest of the Kalmbach railyard today and suffered through the "show us your weathered models" discussion. Wow...some pretty heavy egos there. Good thing we got Vinny to "show 'em da door" around here 'eh?
JEFF: I forgot to add my voice to the chorus praising your pic of the G&D boxcar earlier today...I think that's my favorite pic of yours yet. Very nicely done Sir.
Time to do the w**k for THAT editor I've been ignoring most of today. I have no clue what she wants me to do on the bird houses...but I oughta at least edit/process the photos I've got so I'm not completely empty-handed on THAT tomorrow morning.

Made a mistake, posted my Railbox car in the thread about weathered cars... and started a somewhat heated discussion there after catching a, well I guess, that´s the right word for it, rude comment. I know that I am a bl...y beginner when it comes to weathering, but a comment like that? Shouldn´t have answered...
Thanks, Robby P. - for the second installment. I´ve learned so far, that I have to get the right materials and tools and that weathering is not a 5 minute job. Thanks for your private tutorial here in the diner - keep ´em coming, those lessons!
Everyone a good day!

Good morning, well rains a coming. Mostly in the afternoons thou.
Well I will start off with the "show your weathered model" topic. That's one reason why people don't join MTW. They say they are nice, but then they bash everything. I'm a member, and you do learn a lot from the website. BUT.....you won't see them giving out tips beyond MTW. That's why I'm trying to pass a few things on I have learned form MTW/myself to help you all out. Aggro emailed me, and he wasn't to happy. He seems to be a BIG target on MTW. He's not very liked on MTW. Now he's the guy I get a lot of tips from. I was honestly waiting on them to "lock" it .
ANYWAYS..........
I will get the Railbox done today. The roof should take about 30mins. or so. I will give it a rusty color wash. The wheels, trucks, couplers, etc will take about a hour or so. I will get that posted later.
Hope everybody is doing ok, and have a good morning.
Heartland Division CB&QPC.... Did he croak?
Yeah, he was trying to get a leg up on it, but in the end he got smoked!
I see that Kalmbach will be doing some server upgrades tomorrow. I hope they improve the poor performance I've seen on here since they switched to the new software.
I'm having a Sometimeslink tech come out here today to check out this frustrating problem we've been having. My internet signal is down more times than it's up and my parents are having the very same problem. This tells me that it's not an in-house equipment problem. Last night I checked all my equipment, cables and all, all the way out to the service pole next to my trailer. There were no loose or corroded connections and nothing I did made any difference whatsoever. Moreover, this morning my parent's modem showed itself to be online yet the connection error messages I was getting were telling me a completely different story. The tech I was talking to in Tyler checked the modem from his end and it showed up as being off. He couldn't get a signal from it. Now consider that I'm having the same exact problem with my setup and that screams that something is wrong upline somewhere.

Good morning coffee please. Got a phone call someone needs me to go to the church and print out "that report. You know the one you printed out back in January? I lost it and I need it to complete the audit I was to have done by March. Which one? I don't remember wha it was called. What's it got on it? Well it's got all the things I needed. It was perfect. You know the money we made and spent but it had other things too. Monday? Well I really need it now so I can get it done. I know it‘s 8:00a.m. but I would like to get it as soon as possible, (get this) I have things to do today." Oh you do, do you. Grrrrrrrrrr.
Ulrich- Naw you didn't make a mistake. It looked real good. The mistake was the guy who showed up. If it wasn't you it'd been someone else You keep posting and you'll see what I mean. That kind of criticism is behind the back criticism. If they talked like that without the safety of a thousand miles of separation, they wouldn't be conscious very much. I doubt if they would anyway. Beauty of the internet. You're right, you shouldn't have answered and neither should any one else, myself included, but sometimes rudeness just needs to be checked. Of course both posts and replies hurt the forum as a whole. We are solving nothing by arguing with anyone. (it is kind of comical to listen to their reasonings) I agree that just constant praise to not hurt someones feelings does no good to make that person better. But there is a tactful way of suggesting, I was always taught start with some compliment before mentioning an area of improvement. If you can't find anything good to compliment, and that should be hard usually, just say "good try, but maybe if you tried it this way..." Or fall to the old "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" Then they don't know if you don't like it, or did and just didn't mention it.
Barry- More reminded me of the little 5 year old boy who runs over to the neighbor boy and says, "my friends are better than your friends!" and sticks out his tongue. Probably going back to his friends and telling them how he reeeaaaally set them straight.
Robby- I was curious about MTW I've heard it mentioned several times but I couldn't remember the title and the diner logbook fills up so fast it's hard to find certain posts. Oddly enough I was going to ask you the name in my post last night when I got home but wandered through the yard and stumbled on that thread first. Nice representative they sent over. I still might check out some photos, but I don't believe I'll solicite their help. Sounds like an ego club to me. That guy was rude to Ulrich who clearly stated he was new to this and talked to Aggro like he was some wannabe. To top it all off he used SOMEONE ELSE'S work as an example of the forum and not his own! I bet out of all the trucks out there there is an example to fit the ones picked on. EVERY car weathers different, who's to say one car won't weather the way modeled? Has he seen every Railbox? Can he say none looked like Ulriches? Did Ulrich or Aggro say I tried to make this look just like this? I don't care for that type of help. I don't look for praise, I like praise, we all do, but when I post, I post either because I'm looking for ideas, or I'm proud of something I've done, understanding that there is always room, lots of room in my case, for improvement and any and all is appreciated. Like proof reading it is always helpful to have a fresh view on things. Not the bully look down the nose downright rude responses given by cowards under the protection of a computer screen acting tuff because it's their opinion even though they've spent the last 15 posts cutting everyone elses opinion. Yeah you're entitled your opinion, but why do you think you're the only one who's allowed an opinion. You can berate someone over every little thing they do and like a child they are going to build a resentment no matter how mature they are. To grow, someone has to have encouragement to continue. I guess if you discourage all comers then you truly will be the king of the mountain. And furthermore......(suddenly notices Robby leaned back in the booth with his head kicked back like he was facing a 70mph wind and this cross between horrified, stunned and "what the heck did I do" look on his face) Ooops, sorry Robby. Thanks for your help you give us. I'm sorry MrJones is the punching bag over there, I did notice he handled himself real well last night. (like a fisherman reeling in the bigone he did. Just about had him)
Stepping down before Crandell has to have a talk with Vinnie about me.
Sorry for the rant guys. 'twas just building up. All gone.

Ok the final step.
I weathered the roof with a mix of water, black weathering powder, dark brown powder, and a orange powder. I use just a plain old bursh and just "painted" the mix on. After that had dried, I dullcoted the whole roof. Then I went back with a 10/0 brush, and added the white lines. It gave the roof a "repaired look".
The trucks, wheels, couplers, etc...was weathered with a mix of brown, orange, black weathering powders. I first dullcoted the trucks, wheels, couplers, etc. Kinda gives the powder something to GRAB. I use aligator clips to hold the trucks while I dullcote them. I just hold one in my hand a spray away (of course I wear rubber gloves during the whole weathering job to keep finger prints off the car, and it keeps your hands clean). The same way for the wheels. I give them a quick spray, as same for the couplers. Let that dry and add your mix of powders with any kind of small brush. Then dullcote. The same for the back of the wheels. Dullcote the back of the wheels and add powders. Then dullcote again. For the couplers, I just use the same powder as I just used on the wheels, trucks, etc. First dullcote, and then take a small brush (I use the same one for the wheels, trucks), kinda dab the powder on, and dullcote.
That's it !!!! That's how I weathered this car, and most of my boxcars. Hoppers, engines are a bit different, but I hope this will help.

After reading some of the comments here this morning, I just had to go over and check out what is going on in the "Show your weathered cars" thread....... Guess we have been honored by one of those "experts" from another forum with a visit. Hope nobody minds, but I found a sign that my dear Father in Law had for many years down cellar in his workroom where he built airplanes to fly around in.....
"When argueing with an idiot,Make sure he is not similarly occupied!"
I prefer the work done by those folks (many in this forum) who do great work, but also enjoy the work of others without having to do the "My work is better than yours, watch me pick it apart!" routine. For instance, I have really been enjoying the work Robby has been sharing, and aggro is one of the best out there as far as I can see, as are many others. Too bad as the thread was supposed to be a place to "show" your weathered models not a place to crap on each others work.
One of the first principals I w**rked for used to say, "The door swings both ways. Don't let it hit you in the @$$ on the way out!" I imagine the thread will get locked soon. Surprised it hasn't been already......
I have quite a bit to get done today in between rain showers and thunderboomers today so I best get moving. When I started to write this, the sun was shining. We had some dark moments with a bit of rain, and now the sun is shining again. Ahhhhh, the Finger Lakes!
[edit] Robby I would be proud to have that railbox running on my layout! Of course it would have to be about 75 years into the future since it is still 1925 on my layout..........
Ulrich- Your house? It's beautiful. It really is. However, I couldn't help but notice how unrealistically your yard wall is weathered, and those birch trees, come on didn't you even try?
Just kidding. Your house really is beautiful.
howmus"When argueing with an idiot,Make sure he is not similarly occupied!"
(hangs head) True, so true. I fell for it.

Sir MadogMade a mistake, posted my Railbox car in the thread about weathered cars... and started a somewhat heated discussion there after catching a, well I guess, that´s the right word for it, rude comment. I know that I am a bl...y beginner when it comes to weathering, but a comment like that? Shouldn´t have answered...
Hi Guys,
thought I just drop in for a late afternoon RBF and some small talk about, ah, weather(ing)...
Robby P. - thanks for your last installment on weathering techniques. I still have a RBOX "in virgin state" - will keep that way until I have all the necessary tools and materials. Results will be posted here - not with the other "gentlemen".
Yeah, that´s my house and you are right, Todd - the weathering job is lousy, just look at the roof details with the various shades of moss. Garry - lifetime supply of my wife´s homemade strudel? OK, I will try to talk to her... maybe she will be in a good mood - it´s our silver wedding anniversary on sunday...
Btw, in real life my box car looks better than on the pics.
