Good Morning,
this is the day today - married for 25 years now! A life sentence for murder gets you out of prison after 15 years...
No, Zoe, that is not a black tie I am wearing - it is dark blue... Just some juice for me, and a bagel to munch on while I wait for the guys to drop in.
The weather will be fair today, just like I have ordered it for today. Not much of a celebration - I ain´t got no money to buy anything, that little piece of pressed carbon needs to wait!
Jeffrey - that happened to a friend of mine years ago. He bought an old fire chief´s car and just took down the blue lights (in Germany, they are all blue flashing lights). While stopping at a traffic light, an old lady just bumped into the rear, not much damage done to either car, but the little old lady fainted...
Jim - if Barry has some surplus HO scale bass and trout, I´d be happy to put them into my pond. It is not really a big pond, maybe 12 sq. feet...
Barry - would you please keep your ´ boomers and monsoon rain? Those folks with a basement in our area now really have a hard time with their basements getting flooded about every other day. There are tiimes when I miss a basement for a train room, but with the prevailing weather, I am glad I don´t have one. After all , I am into modeling trains, not submarines...
A really good day to all of you!
CNCharlie, Thanks for the offer, I allready knew from reasearch that it worked in Montreal for commuter service. I always thought No. 47 looked cool, with its Hudson wheel arrangement under a tank locomotive. As for the Jubilee, ANY locomotive in that state of repair brings tears to my eyes.
Good morning. It's 77 and cloudy. The high will be around 93 and there's a chance of thunderstorms. Not much happened yesterday. My mother and I went to a restaurant in town for lunch then I brought her home and got her settled back in then worked on the layout for a little while then went to dinner in town with my sister and her husband. He's scheduled to go back over to the sand pit soon and is using his time to get some home DIY projects done. They just recently got their 4.5 ton central AC system replaced with a 5 ton system from Payne. It wasn't a pain to put in though it did require some reworking of the duct work and the mounting base. They'd been having some problems with the old system and the mounting frame for the evaporator assembly was partially rusted out. I'll stick with my Frigidaire. It keeps it downright frigid in here.Today's Weather for:Sundown, LA 71446-6114 7/26/2009Heat Index: 82°FHumidity: 87%Dew Point: 73°FSo Far TodayHigh: 78°FLow: 76°FRain: 0.00"Rain Rate: 0.00"/hGust: 3mph NNEToday High: 95 Mostly cloudy. Good morning, here is a link to the rotary coal dumper I built. The cost for the materials is $0. I used scraps of wood I had and a heavy gage coat hanger. A friend of mine had one on his layout, but he was using it to haul lime stone from a quarry to a steel mill so I can’t take credit for the design. I intend to install a coal mine in the opposite end of my basement to load cars (still working on how to construct the remote shutoffs my friend has) and install a double car rotary dump for the port facility. I think this will be an interesting operation to add to the layout; filling hoppers at the coal mine then delivering them to two different industries to be emptied. On my friends layout it kept two drill teams busy dumping coal and filling the empty cars not to mention the two main line trains transporting the loads to their destinations.
This week’s project is to design and build a loader using the body of the Walther’s coal mine.

Good morning folks.
I see that most of you are doing well. For those of you that are not, I hope it changes for you.
I've been building kits at a fairly good pace these days. With fall just around the corner, I need to get all of my spray painting out of the way. The buildings are getting painted, assembled, and set aside. The weathering and detail work can come later. It's also satisfying my need to move things along. As the buildings are built, I can start to visualize how my town will come together. Almost instant gratification! I may get some time later today to continue this building spree. There is one thing that I'm learning with all of this painting, I need an airbrush. The finished product would come out so much better with more control of the paint. Some day soon I hope.
I hope you folks have a great day!
Mornin' everyone!
Just popping in for a quick cup of dark roast before heading out for a fun filled (I hope) week at SciTek Quest Camp. We have 30 campers signed up for the program, the most we have ever had. most are coming to camp for free as we managed to get 3 different scholarship programs to fund kids (14 to 18) to come to the camp.
I will bore you will a few pics from the week as it unfolds. I put photos up at my Photobucket account every day for the parents and friends of the campers to see.
Got to get "On the Road Again....". later!

We had lightnig hit one of those out in front of our old house. Watched the whole thing! They can be quite the attention getters, huh?
Lemon water, please.
***Jeffrey, wish we could see a pic of that gals face in the parking lot. Just maybe she will think twice about her own driving & attitude next time.
***Lee, the RCD looks interesting. Look forward to seeing it in place on the layout.
***Barry, so, how's the squirrel doing?
Rob
Good morning. Never got any rain yesterday. Not one drop. Maybe this afternoon again.
I guess I will head into the basement today. Try to finish up some cars.
I did find a job in todays paper *FedEx Ground*. I worked for them in NC for about a year and a half. I had to give it up due to my grandmother was walking to work (I worked 3rd, and wasn't home till about 8-830am). I got employee of the week twice, caught some people stealing (got a plaque for the head FedEx guy), and ghot promoted four times. So...........Maybe that will help me.
Jeff.......Very funny story. My wife and I were shopping the other day at Wal-Mart, and you always see something happen in the parking lot. That day some old lady couldn't turn her car "tight enough" to back out, and slammed into a "Caddys" bumper. She backed up again and left. Maybe I should open a body-shop in the middle of the parking lot $$$$$.
Well I hope everybody has a good day.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Mornin' Playing hooky from church this morn. I need to mow the yard and fix the brakes on my truck. Just pads, but they got so low there wasn't enough "juice" to opperate the front calipers. I checked the pads when I replaced the ball joint and they weren't that bad I didn't think I'd need them yet. Oh well.
Ulrich- do you not have sump pumps or you not allowed to use them?
Lee- I kept looking at the photos, well the trucks wheels and track, trying to figure out how you kept the car on the track. Uh, duh!
Ray- Have a safe and enjoyable event. I know you'll enjoy yourself.
Rob says- "Barry, so, how's the squirrel doing?" Ohhhhhh, nooooooo! Garry's gonna start again!
Have a Great Day!!

Good Morining!
Not often that I make it here in the morning so I'd like a toasted cinammon bun and a large coffee please Chloe.
Barry, did you find the remains of the cooked squirrel? Pippa's dream was to catch one and have it barbequed so I wonder what she would do if it fell pre-cooked? She came close a couple of times to getting one when she was young but she wasn't quite fast enough. Now she can't hear them and often doesn't see them. Getting old is the pits.
I've been doing a little, well I wouldn't exactly call it weathering but perhaps toning down, on a few box cars. I also have that little store painted and will put it together today. Not sure what I'll call it but it will help fill out the village a little.
Another cloudy day here with a chance of showers but the temp at 25C is ok and there is no wind which is very unusual. Wife and I are having a chill-out day.
I'll just sit at the RC and finish my bun and coffee.
CN Charlie
Just ordered the "Locomotive Scratch-Builder's grab bag" from BLI. I'm hopeing that the two nonoperational locomotives are easy to fix!
Todd, there are 4 pieces of wire coat hanger bent 90 degrees. When the car is rolled over it rests on the wire and then the top of the car rests on the bent section. The left side wheels do come off the rails a little but fall back in place when righted.
Rob, as soon as I clear off that area and put all the tools away I plan on shooting a short movie of it in operation.
Lee- Believe it or not, as obvious as it is, it took me a while. I thought about it off and on then it dawned on me while I was mowing the yard. OF COURSE the 90 degree coat hangers! I just came in to re look at the photos to confirm and I saw your post. Boy the simplest things huh. My first thought was you had magnets mounted where the bolts on the bottom where to hold the car but I thought that might be too iffy and you'd spend some time digging the cars out of the bucket. Loose coal, cool! I'll be looking for the loading operation next. (or did I miss that?) Would the coat hangers work if they were the width of the car to keep it flat? Or would they be in the way and/or look wrong. How do you keep them from sliding while the car is inverted? Friction? I would think that would loosen over time. Clamps? I'm sure your friend has it figured out. I'm just curious.
I took the 2nd class Modell Railroader quiz in MRH mag and am just class 1 (or whatever it's called) FLUNK!! Class 1 probey I guess. What's an articulated? (that aughta bring Tom a runnin')
***Lee, can't wait to see the video of it. Real coal? If so, those little locos will get a work out for real. Very cool!
Glued some small sections of foam to the corner of the canyon (wife's HO layout). Then added some sheetrock compound to make room for a small cabin. Eventually wife will add things like a banjo player, nearby still and anything else she feels belongs there.
Houdy All!
I'll make this one shorter as we seem to be having a T-Storm affecting our utilities.
Visited with my ex-girlfriends family up north on Saturday for a picnic. Her Mom invited me even though the girls fiance' was there... Don't know what that's about but her mom makes great food so I went....
nik.n - I ordered 2 of those grab bags, I hope I can make something too!
I had plans for doing some MRR stuff but summer here apparently is not good for that.... Too many interruptions..... Someday.... Maybe!!
Things have been crazy here with the BENNYS. An acronym for tourists originally traveling on the shared Penn, CNJ, Coastline.... Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Newark, New York State ( I know, geographically it's wrong but that's the usual order), and now jamming the Garden State Parkway. And then, locals evading police in pursuits. Nothing like a dozing New Yorker waking up at 6:30am after taking down a utility pole on the local highway... or a local flipping an SUV after a 2.5 mile pursuit "I din't do nothin' wrong!!!" Of course he couldn't explain the 6 cases of laundry detergent (which were crushed and spread over the road) in the back of the truck.....
Any hoo... enough unimportant stuff from NJ.
Eric
I'm bettin' that squirrel is a crispy critter!
Afternoon all..Its sunny and 78 here..Sallie is napping and 2 grand daughters are watching TV..I'll have a RBF make it a double please..Thank You..Hope you all are having a great sunday...Jerry
Rob - If the wife comes up with a mini Burt Reynolds for that scene I'd think about leaving......
Jerry - that RBF sounds good, I'll have one too and I'll take care of Jerry's tab, thanks.
Lee - I went back and looked at your unloader... simple (that's not an insult!!!), but practical and efficient.... I definitely like it. I can picture a loader in the hills, (modified Walthers minekit perhaps?). Of course I've never been to Ohio, how do they mine coal there? Anyway, can't wait to see it in action.
Ulrich- I just clicked on the previous page by accident and re caught the first part of your post earlier. How did I miss that!!!!!

Phil, Garry: I think the squirrel was a little overdone by the looks of it----
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is going to be a quick one---we got some nasties heading our way so I'll be ready to turn off inna bit------maybe.
We had a few heavy monsoons come through with some trying to be those t'underboomers and so most of the day was spent looking through the Walthers newsletter things and trying to find some goodies
Chloe, I'll have a 32oz porterhouse steak medium rare with baked potato and grilled asparagus please. I'll finish that off with a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie and a coffee as well please----I'll be at the window seat watching the trains------
Eric,
Once upon a time Ohio had block coal mines but those ran out years ago. The railroad I loosely model after is the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern. They had a line that ran south from Ashtabula, OH to the Pennsylvania – West Virginia state lines where they serviced 4 coal mines. The coal was transported north to power plants, steel mills and other customers but most of it went to the docks to be transported to the upper Great Lakes States and exported to Canada.
I wasn’t going to model a coal mine, but in the name of “operations” I need a means to load the hoppers. I have an out of the way corner in the basement (in a spare room), separate from the main layout that I can install a coal mine and a loader. I have a power plant and I will have a coal dock (at the port) to receive the coal via the dumper I just built and a future dumper.
The neat thing will be the train departing the coal mine will need to travel once around the #1 and #2 mainline, then switch to the #3 mainline to deliver the loaded cars to the power plant that’s approximately 195’ of travel. Then the locomotive will have to make a stop at the roundhouse to be turned to pick up empty hoppers before returning to the coal mine. While the mallet operator is running hoppers back and forth on the main line there will be a drill team at the power house and the coal mine running switchers to load/unload the hoppers. A similar event will be taking place to deliver coal to the port where a third drill team will be unloading hoppers into the waiting 720’ freighter. The primary goods moved on my layout are Iron Ore and coal. So there will be an opportunity for another operator to transfer ore Jennies from the port to the yard or the steel mill. So if I can pull it off at my next operating session I can gainfully employ 6 operators at once doing something more than just running trains around in a circle.
Lee - Thank You for the description of your planned operation. I finally looked at your site ( I should look at the others too). I have seen your pics before but of course the site explains everything. Someday.... maybe... I hope I can be that dedicated to the hobby to accomplish a fraction of what you, and others, have. Oh, an early congrats on your retirement.
Evening All..Thanks for picking up tab for my RBF Eric...You all have a good nite...Jerry
Evening, Janie, Flo - could I have a taco salad (hold that 'da Bomb' sauce, please! ) and a Dr. Pepper, please. Thanks, ladies!
Todd, your plan works well for when the two-legged critters can be 'faced' in real life, but online, they hide in the lockers or duck down the hall, or "Oh no, you must've misunderstood me - I would NEVER mean that mean-spirited type of remark...". I find (for me, YMMV) the online ones respond better with totally ignoring the dolts (since taking a 2 X 4 to them isn't really an option in the forums...) No, Crandell, I was just speaking hypothetically (but you let us know if the real life 'woodshed' option is available, and we'll help clean out some of the - ahem - clutter....)
Jeff, that lake is down even more than I'd guessed - 10 feet?! So, I suppose the anthropologists are artificially keeping the level down for the sake of their 'dig'? That was hilarious about your gal and the quickly-shortened rant when she saw the light bar! Couldn't backpedal fast enough, could she? Hey, nice Cotton Belt boxcar - our LHS owner/MRR club member is an ex-SSW conductor. He'd appreciate that one!
Ulrich, I hope a few of those thunderboomers just get rained out before they get to you. Now, your neighbors who like R/C boats for their basements, they might disagree, but... And Happy Anniversary! (Just don't let the frau see your post!)
Lee, I was (sorta) able to see your dumper pic, but can somebody please give me a logical reason WHY the #$%*&^ at Webshots use a bandwidth-wasting format like Flash, for STILL photos??? Mutter, mutter, mutter... The dumper does look good though, Lee. Sorry for the rant, but websites that needlessly waste bandwidth are a pet peeve of mine. (Probably related to another pet peeve about politicians who waste MY money. Guess I'd better move on before I get onto THAT one...)
Cederstrand Jeffrey, wish we could see a pic of that gals face in the parking lot. Just maybe she will think twice about her own driving & attitude next time.
Jeffrey, wish we could see a pic of that gals face in the parking lot. Just maybe she will think twice about her own driving & attitude next time.
Nah, Rob, I doubt that one'll happen - some of those drivers never do figure out the cause of the problems...
Cederstrand***Barry, so, how's the squirrel doing?
You mean "Fricassed Fred'"? (in Garry's absence, I'll pinch-hit for him)
Barry, I've been about 30-40 feet away (back in my college ROTC days), marching down a street, when lightning hit a transformer on a power pole ahead of us. It only took our platoon leader a split-second to give us the order to 'break ranks' (any longer, and we would have done that, anyway... )
Jerry, how's the 'fixing' of your chairs doing? Have they got everything up and running properly?
This weekend I started what was gonna be Phase II of the background warehouse, but I think I'm gonna call it Phase I-b instead. Started out with one of these ScotchBrite pads to rub off much of the 'mortar':
and then tried drybrushing some Boxcar Red (the walls still looked kinda light to me), and wound up with this:
which I'm not really happy with, not a close enough color match to my 'brick red' that the spray paint was.
I also wanted to show the depot I'll be using for the Cortez station. It was a DPM/Woodland Scenics, but the baggage door was on the back side of the wrong wall (IMHO...), so I cut and re-glued it to put the baggage section on one side, and the passenger seating area on the other. Here're some photos of it (still need to paint it, and the roof is just set on it - I hope to build an interior for it before I get it all done). Front:
Side (angled) view:
Other (passenger) side view:
And the back view:
I also noticed on my trailer court office/shed, that I'd epoxied the roof on before painting the building (and before gluing the window glass in), but I decided that with some fiddling, I can slide the window 'glass' in the door and then play 'tip-and-tilt' until it's in the right spot, and use a sticky stick (tape or some glue from a glue stick) to move the 'glass' out, apply glue, and pull the glass back to the opening. Since I don't know of an easy way to un-epoxy something (without totally damaging things in the process), that'll have to do. I WILL remember not to do that again...
About time for me to head for home. I'll see you Diners (and ladies) in the morning. Prayers for safe parking lots, for progress on draining your ponds (or filling them back up, in Jeff's case), for healing, and thanksgiving for a Happy 25th Anniversary, Ulrich!
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Hey Ulrich.........
Gooooooooood Evening from sunny Camp Babcock-Hovey in the heart of the Finger Lakes!
Flo I'll have a cup of decafe to calm me down so i can get a good nights sleep........ Oh yeh, in a R&GV Museum Mug please.
Philip, did you post something naughty again?????
We had a great day hear, have 28 campers ready to learn and have fun. SciTek Quest has begun!
Not even any of Barry's thunderboomers until we got in the dining hall for supper. It poured then with a great light show outside. Tonight's opening campfire was held inside. No sooner got back to the lodge than we got some more "weather".......
Have a good one! Hope to stop in tomorrow.
