Good morning and I will have a bagel with lox and cream cheese please!
Hey Chloe thanks for the apple pie a la mode last night! It was a great treat!
“Take your model trains to work” day is Friday, November 10th.
I revived an old post this morning in the main MR forum section, “Take your model train to work day” is tomorrow, November 10th. Anyone else have model trains at work? Check it out!

November 10, 2006 (Friday) is "Take your model train to work" day! Since we are off for Veterans Day tomorrow I brought my trains to work today.
Nothing fancy, I brought some HO scale stuff, two diesel locomotives, a Norfolk Southern GE Dash 9-44CW, and a Kansas City Southern SD45T-2, a Southern covered hopper, and a Norfolk Southern bulkhead flat car. I was thinking of making a 3' display base with roadbed and track but did not have time to put that all together, could be something to shoot for next time. My next door cube co-worker models S gauge and we talk trains most mornings; it was fun sharing and showing off my model trains.
Layout Progress Report
Finished the dry-run of track for the staging yard last night, and then something funny happened. I decided to hook up my old MRC DC throttle and test the tracks out. So I took off the old lead wires, slapped on some brand spanking new 20AWG wires and soldered them to a short piece of flex track. Then I attached that to the yard lead track and put on my new Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW diesel and tested every switch and track configuration in the 11 track staging yard. Yea buddy! Not one hitch, and it felt good to run trains again, been over a year and a half since I ran some trains!
Now I just have to attach the track to the roadbed! That is tasked for tonight’s train adventures.

Philip, I am sure it might take a few sessions to get that one put together. Thanks again! Looks like you got a great deal there too, I like Atlas products.
Inch, I like the history of Veterans Day you posted, sure is interesting how it has evolved over the years.
Dick, it is a coal mining operation that I will be modeling. Now I never thought of modeling a gold mine, but that would be interesting.

Good Morning All,
Mild but overcast this morning and the rain hs stopped for now. I'll have a regular and a blueberry muffin please.
We saw a show about the Cass Senic Railroad last night at the museum. Lots of Shays and Heislers and 9% grades. Very interesting stuff.
I had asked the CFO what she wanted to do for our anniversary and she came back with a trip to the Grand Canyon so that's where we're going. Been past it a dozen times driving to and from the races, but never stopped. Turns out there is also an excursion railroad at Williams and if we fly into Las Vegas the Hoover Dam is on the way. This could be a cool trip.
Inch - Sorry neither you or your CFO are coming out this way, but Uncasville is all the way on the other end of the state and not an easy drive from there to here. The way the weathers been she may need all the same kit in Fla that she would have here. My peeps in the Naples area are all complaining about cold weather though I suspect that means they've had to wear long pants instead of shorts every day.
Dick - As far as the elections are concerned, I saw a mandate for change in international policy, not Carte Blanc for the Dems who in any event have changed alot of the words in their tune. I think the mess in Iraq just got to everyone with a conscience and it took this to get anyones attention at the White House. We can't change too much too soon, and in the immortal words of Peter Townsend "Meet the new boss same as the old boss."
The DRM booth is the Danbury Rail Museum booth at Amhearst. I'll be doing that show and probably the Cheshire Ct show next Sunday. I need to get some more yard time in so the show at the Mid Hudson Civic Center this Sunday is out. We are scrambling a bit to get the plow truck up and running and check the antifreeze levels in the rolling stock that have it so that will shoot this weekend at the rail yard.
Glad to hear our wounded are making progress towards recovery especially Jeff and Steve's better test results.
Time to pick up tools and work. Man that coffee was good. CUL,J.R.
The faster we go the behinder we get.
Good morning and top 'o' the day to all of ye. I'll have the bac on and eggs this morning.
Here's the weather for my area today.

Yeah, I went back this evening and picked up 4 cabeese and a new NMRA gauge for $22! That place has always treated me well, but I could get used to this!
Had a good trip to Pineville today. The drive was good, the traffic was light. I stopped by the LHS and picked up a new Atlas hopper for 12 bucks, don't see deals like that everyday. I went on to the hospital from there. Physical therapy went well, the damage was light this time. They only had to remove the tops of the caluses on the right foot and just a light filing on the left foot. It still smarts though. From there I had to get my feet measured for special shoes. Maybe in two or three months I can get out of these A-B walkers. They do a good job of letting me get around but they're uncomfortable in the extreme as the braces bite into my legs. I've had to wear them for three years now and that is three years too long! If I had taken care of myself in the first place I wouldn't be in this prediciment today.
If any of you have diabetes, do exactly what your doctor tells you to do, no matter how inconvient it is. You'll thank him or her in the long run, believe me. I can barely walk without aid and I can't run to save my life! Not even a short distance.
Another reminder for you diabetecs and others with weak immune systems, get that flu shot and have the date of your last pnuemonia shot checked. Get it if it's expired.
Pc: That was a nice haul you made at the LHS. You really scored. Pics as soon as possible.
Veterans Day is Saturday, so I thought I’d post some trivia bout it
1918, known as the Great War, WW1 ends with an armistice, between the Allies and Germany at the 11’th hour, on 11’th day, of the 11’th month.
1919, on Nov. 11’th, President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day. The original concept is the suspension of business for a 2-minute period, beginning at 11 am with a day of also marked by parades and public gathering.
1920, at the suggestion of church groups, President Wilson declares the Sunday nearest Armistice Day should be marked with services promoting international peace.
1926, congress adopts a resolution requesting the president issue a proclamation calling on officials “ to display the flag of the United States on all government building on Nov. 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies pf friendly relations with all peoples”. Over the next decade, most states establish Nov. 11’th as a legal holiday. At the federal level, the president issues an annual proclamation.
1938, on May 13, congress passes legislation making Nov, 11’th a federal holiday, Armistice Day.
1941-1945, 1950-1953 WW2 and the Korean wars create millions of new veterans in addition to those of the Great War, already honored by Armistice Day. On Nov. 11’th 1953, cobbler Alvin King of Emporia Kan., organizes the town annual Armistice day as an observances of “All Veterans Day”. The Kansas Governor attends and suggest similar observances in every US city, prompting US Rep. Ed Reese of Emporia to introduce legislation that would change Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
1954, on Jun 1, President Eisenhower signs the legislation changing the name of the day to Veterans day. On Oct 8’th he issues the first Veterans Day proclamation.
1968, congress passes the uniform Holiday bill t ensure 3 day weekends for federal employees by creating 4 national holidays on Mon. as the new date of observance for Veterans Day.
1975, President Ford, signs legislation returning the federal observance of Veterans Day, to Nov. 11, to take effect in 1978.

Good morning fellers!
How bout some coffee and a doughnut or two over here!
Rained just about all day, and we broke a single day rain record with 2.4” in Raleigh. Supposed to dry out and get really nice on Thursday. Temps are now in the mid 60’s, but still damp.
Monique went to her notary class last night and I spent about 3 ½ hours in the train room. I put down some more cork roadbed for the coal mine area and the lead track to the staging area. Also put down track in the staging area for a dry run before they get put down with adhesive. My original plan was to have nine tracks in the staging area, and then as I started with the dry run of the track I found that the area would hold two more tracks, so now the staging area will have another 16’ of track. Yea!
Dick, thanks for that movie review, now I want to see it! Does anyone know of any trailers out there for this oldie but goodie?
grayfox1119 wrote: RYAN: What type of consulting does he do from home? I could deal with that too.
My dad was a paleontologist with Texaco for just over 30 years and worked with a team of other geologists in what was known as the PaleoLab. The small consulting company they now own subs out the same work they used to do when they worked for Texaco, only now they get paid by the slide. A brief story of what he does: They review slides that have core samples for various drilling rigs, mostly ones that are actively drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. With the electron microscope they peer into these prepared slides and count how many microorganism fossils of a particular species known as foraminifera are contained within sections of the sample. Depending on how many of these tiny fossils show up they can determine the stratification zones that are most likely to contain oil. They then send their results back to the company; they also consult for Shell, Chevron, and BP.
Hoople, I know DCC might be out of the question right now, but picking up a few $8.00 / hour jobs and your $$$ can add up quick. You are only a few years away from being able to work part time at some places. When I was a restaurant manager we used to hire bussers who were around age 14 and made around $5.75 per hour working part time. The only limitation was that they could not work more than 5 hours straight and could not work after 10:00 PM. They also got a tip share from the wait staff, cash is king!
Fergie, hope your dad is feeling better soon. Nothing wrong with you a’ tall! You just got a case of that railroader flu going around again, that’s all! It makes you want to buy locomotives even though you already have more than enough motive power to pull a 50+ rolling stock consist. Jeff, so you were a traveling man eh! Sounds like some European adventures under you belt. Hope your feeling better soon!
Inch, glad to hear Becky’s feeling better now. Have to agree on the weather, getting up to high 60’s here and damp too.
Jeff, be safe on your trip today! And here’s hoping you are feeling better. Sounds like you got plenty of European adventures under your belt. Oh, and thanks for breakfast again!
Cheers,
