Lee, and have a cup of coffee (or beverage of your choice) on me. I'm with you on preferring freelancing for my RR. Enjoy the Shop and just give our virtual servers (Zoe & Chloe the twins, plus Janie and I think Flo helps out some days, too) your food and beverage requests. If they don't have it out front, they can probably find it in the back stockroom and freezer. And enjoy the pool table over in the corner there. Me, sometimes I like to sit in that corner booth and watch the trains from there.

Been a busy week at work, so I'm hoping today will be calmer. Got in the Roberts Printing Co. kit and I'm supposed to get the money for my eBay auction tomorrow morning. That will help! Plus, I'm supposed to get a reimbursement check today, which will be good. Never can get too many checks when the bills are coming around.

Hope everyone's staying healthy today, and for those who are working toward that. Our weather's supposed to get into upper 60's today, and possibility of some showers.

Veteran’s day is Saturday, but most businesses are observing it today.

 

I’m modeling a free-lance RR in HO scale. 1945-1952 era 99% steam. The “L.S. &W. RR” (named after me, my Daughter Samantha, and my Son William).  I was trying for a near prototypical operation but I didn’t want to get locked into one of the historical Railroad lines.  I’m originally from Toledo, Ohio (near Airline yard and Old Road) and grew up with the railroads.  Several family members worked for NYC, PRR, PC, and Conrail. I ran off and joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1987, but still have the love of modeling railroads.  Currently I live in Euclid just N.E. of Cleveland, Ohio. (Near Collingwood yard).  My current duties involve PWCS missions (Ports Waterways & Coastal Security).  In other words: I get to trespass legally around the rail yards, right of ways, mills and docks.

Has anyone had any success in modeling cement (concrete)?  I want to cement the area between my roundhouse and the turntable on my HO layout and looking for advice. 

This should work.  Just change the color a bit and carve in some expansion joints.

Got a good laugh yesterday at my bosses expense. He was trying to rebuild an old bandsaw (at least 30 years old). He got everything together, it all turned fine, nothing came loose in the tests. He turned it on and it ran fine. Ererything worked as it was supposed to. He then got a piece of wood and put it to test. The cutting was going just fine, then the machine started vibrating, a little at first, then suddenly a lot. Then the machine started flying to pieces. He jumped aside making a desperate grap for the cord as he went by. He got it unplugged just before it threw the blade off the rollers. All is OK, nobody was hurt and we all got a good laugh. The machine was then labeled as junk and will be cannibalized for parts to fix another one.

 Mornin, coffee and a couple sweet roll Zoe,
 Starting the day with some sun,high in the 60's, with increasing clouds through out the day, and rain moving in this evening, just what we don't need. We're already almost 11 inches over the yearly average now.

Found out last evening, one of the grandsons, Jussy, joined the ROTC, and will be marching in the Veterans Day parade in Mattoon tomorrow. So after a stop in Greenup to pick up some corn we'll head on up and watch.

Jeff ,, you best be carefull there son, you gonna hurt yurself bad someday. I think that ones will be tender for a few days. Good luck at work today.
 I had a nail drove clean through the top of my foot one time and I couldn't move far enough to get the crow bar. So there I stood 30 ft. up on a 2x10, nailed down, till Fred got a round there to get me loose. Kinda hobbled around for a few days.

Plan on working outside on the yard, raking, hauling, n burning this morning. J Birds will be here latter and she likes helping with that. Hope ya'll has a gooden.

   Mild but still damp out. Lighter overcast than normal this morning. I'll have a donut and a regular coffee please. More wiring drops put in last night and I think I've got the blocks or sections worked out for the busses and reverse loops. Next I get to search for a four block feeder/breaker compatible with my MRC set-up.

   If today is trains at work day I'm covered. Got my ABA Lionel New Haven F-3's set up in the cabinet. and the Lionel repair piece set up on the cross over on top of same.

   Jeff - Stapler in hand, staples in wood. No safety on the tool? Please do be careful we like having you about.

   Time to pick up tools - today we rearrange the rigs in the lot and  start making room for more machinery - oh joy. CUL,J.R.

Grayfox: I had the spinal meningitis when I was 2 years old and it messed me up bad! I grew up with severe nerve damage and multiple personality problems. I was mentally retarded as a child and learning anything was difficult. I also have dyslexia and ADHD, both conditions that were unknown then. The damage from the meningitis screwed with hearing so I hear words and sounds scrambled. Fortunately there's a pattern to it so I was able to, over time, learn how to 'decode' what I hear. When I was 17 I had severe blood poisoning, cause unknown, and was hospitalized for 3 weeks. At 19 I had lead poisoning from red lead paint and at 20 I had blood poisoning again, this time from an infected cut. At 24 I started having severe problems with my balance and eyesight and was also having frequent dizzy spells. I got checked out and found that I had a blood sugar level of more than 700. If I had followed the doctors advice all would probably be fine now. But I didn't and now I'm paying the price for it. I still have frequent dizzy spells, the bones of my feet and ankles are deformed by a nasty condition known as Charcot foot wiich is spreading up my legs. I need special footwear to walk and then I can't walk very far, my energy level is ZIP, I have no feeling in my arms from the elbows down and no feeling in my legs from the knees down. The good news is that my heart is healthier than that of most of the doctors and my bad cholestorol level is in the 70's, very low.

Man, you have to be careful!!! Diabetics don't heal very fast, and you can get infections real easy, as my dad did in his later years.

You certainly have had your share of sickness and injuries Jeff, Spinal Meningitis too!!?? On top of everything else?? Good Lord, what did you do for a living in those days when you got all those things? Did you fighht off Aliens from the planet Aerius??

Good evening all. Today at work, I got stapled! That's right, stapled! I was using a pnuematic staple gun and accidently shot a 2 inch brass staple through my left hand. Good news, I didn't feel a thing due to all the nerve damage I have from diabetes and spinal meningitis. No bones, b;ood vessels or nerves were hit. Bad news, I bled like a stuck pig. All I felt was the pressure of the impact when it hit. I lifted my hand and looked at it and said 'Well I'll be d***ed, how the he** did I do that!'. I told my boss this project is official now, I have blood in it. It has to get done.

Man! Has it been a few days since I was last in here or what? Anyway, I’ve been on vacation this week and have done nothing but relax and enjoy it while I can. No more till at least February! Tomorrow, I’m going over to mom and dad’s to help do some remodeling of their bathroom. Dad got some new flooring that I’m helping install and mom has made me some oatmeal cookies, and will be serving steak and potato salad for dinner. Awesome I say! Plus, I get to save $4.00 this week by also taking my laundry over and not having to do it here at the complex or the laundro-mat.

Evening Gang: Not much going on here. We had to take Mary Ann's tractor in to the dealer today. It wouldn't start, just hit the switch and nothing. It was the ignition switch so only cost $31. That was a surprise.

I think that I'll head for the shop and see what if anything I can get done. The TVis next to zip tonight. Tomorrow we're going in to talk to the HR folks about insurance and such for retirement. I may not go on the feb 2 date. Mary Ann needs to get here cateracks removed and I've got some problem in my right eye. I'm seeing the eye doc next fri so I'll know more then. Also the boss hasen't cleared me for taking the four weeks of vacation in January. I guess I could make one more opening.

Well I'm going to cut out. Have a good night all.

Jerry,,, No, on both counts for Veterans day. The only parade around that I know of anymore is in Terre Haute, bout 3 mile long, can't walk that far anymore. And the last I heard wasn't anyone going to take the locomotive over this year. Not to many people will take the time to drive it like I did for 5 years.

 Was going to help with Veterans day program in Marshall schools Mon., but found out today that mom is getting her orther stints done then. I think I need to be at the hospital more

Good Evening All,

   Just passing through on the way home. Got over to the yard but forgot my tape measure and had to be content pulling the flat off the plow truck.

   Dick - you hit just the tip of the iceberg on the Mideast. After you factor in the Syrians, Saudis, Yemenis, Turks and the Israelies you have a powder keg with a lit fuse. We need to be aware that the minute we withdraw a war is going to start since the people in the shadows in Iraq are simply waiting for us to leave. Unless an Arab coalition can go in and take our place there is little hope for peace. Not a pleasent thought.

   Driving to Las Vegas is not my style. We're flying and taking a rent a wreck from there so we can tour. I haave spent way too many hours/days/weeks over the years driving truck cross country for that to have any attracton any more. There is a world of difference between driving to get somewhere and doing the tourist thing. I love the scenery in the southwest and even if we went nowhere I'd be happy. As far as the fast way out west it's simple. Route 80 to Route 15. 40 is more interesting in places and if you are going on tour take the time to follow at least parts of Route 66. There are roads in Colorado that go through some of the most breathtaking scenery you could imagine. If you have the time I could send you the route map for one of the week long rallies we ran out there. In the fall it was just spectacular.

I am going to digress from trains for a minute because it is important that all Americans know the consequences of the actions that we take as a nation.

Regarding the election, being a history buff, I am very concerned over Iraq for several reason, let me lay these thoughts upon you:

1. If we pull out of Iraq, seeing we started it by invading, we leave three rival factions:
(a) The Kurds (Islam )in the north, who have a lot of oil wells, but are hated by the Turks who NEVER will allow a seperate Kurd state, they will invade and have said so.

(b) The Sunnis ( islam ) under Saddam, murdered, tortured, and gassed, the Kurds and the rival Shiites mostly in the South.

(c) The Shiites, ( Islam) the majority population in Iraq, have no love for the Sunnis after the way thery were treated by Saddam and his henchmen. And this hatred goes all the way back to the 8th century.

(d) Iran is nearly all Shiite, and led by the most radical of Islamic leaders, a real nutcase who is building nuclear reactors ( supposedly for electricity ). They have been funding and training the terrorists in Iraq, plus a new radical bunch of terrorists in Iran.

Now as you can see, if we just pull out of Iraq, we are going to have a mess worse than anyone can begin to fathom. The Shiites will take over the entire country, there will be a blood bath, and Iran will be the winner without lifting a finger. And, between Shiite controlled Iraq, and Iran, they will control more land and oil than Saudi Arabia, including the Persian Gulf where all the shipping lanes are for oil in the Mideast.

The bottom line, we made the same mistake after WW1 when we left Germany in a mess and that brought about Hitler ( you know the rest of that story). After WW2 we installed The Marshall Plan ,put West Germany back on their feet, and they became a good neighbor and part of the world community of free nations.

Those who do not learn the lessons of history, will be doomed by it.

Good afternoon gents, spent the day setting up 6 4x4 tables with 3/4" plywood tops for our Christmas Village display ( Dept 56). Tomorrow I set up 75' of Kato track and the inclines and foam mountains for the train that runs through the mountains and the display village. I am glad that I made these tables with wing nuts and carriage bolts!!!

MIKE: That lantern might bring $50 to $150 at a train show. I see them all the time at big train shows, and they are getting around $75 normally depending upon the RR name and how rare they are.

RYAN: Look like you made it for running 1st train by Thanksgiving...this WILL reflect in your next performance review !!!
As for gold mine, or silver, it is easy to model those, just get a bunch of small stones and spray paint them gold or silver.

LISA: I will be at the Train show also, probably on Saturday. Maybe we will run into each other there. I will be wearing an Alaska hat on with a few RR pins on it.

GMTRacing: JR, do you drive to Vegas area? The reason I ask is that we are planning a trip there in a year or two, let me know what routes you recommend etc.
I agree with you on the election mandate. I seems to me from what I saw, the Dems that got elected were those who were more moderate towards the center, and not radical liberalists.

Yeah Jerry, they change with the seasons it seems like.  The one I got all that from is the Hobby Town over on East 82nd street over by the mall (6336 E. 82nd St.).  Dan in the train shop hooked me up.

There's another decent shop over off of Washington Street near Shadeland (Train Central, 6742 E. Washington), there's Tom Metzler's place that's been there for years (7418 Madison Ave.), and Big Four out in Plainfield (1005 E. Main St.) that are all good too.

Sounds like we have some sore losers in the cafe, but I must said YES!!!!!!! Now we just need to get the Bush out of the white house, and it'll be free at last, free at last my people are free at last. Its time to get the hell out of Iraq, let the towel heads kill each other. Better yet put Saddam back in power, he knows how to keep the people there from killing each other. Oh well you can tell how I voted.

    The weather here is great yesterday we missed the record high by 1,73 for Nov in the northwoods not bad. Today its about 60, but tomorrow their saiding the hammer may fall 4 to 7ins of snow/ wet slobby crap, oh well it is Nov. The local weather man saids the ground is to warm to stick, we'll have to way and see oh's right. I put my fate in my indian weather stone, ever see one? It a stone hanging from a string. If the stone is wet its raining, if its white and wet its snowing, if you can't see it its foggy and or dark? If its cold to the touch its cold, if it is warm its warm. Its right 100% of the time, theirs no weather man that can said that!

    Man we do have alot of sick ones here, I know how you feel for the last month almost every time i have bowel movement i have alot of blood see the Doc on Tues. also been getting these killer headaches.
