Good morning Gents (and Ladies) - Only have time for a cuppa, then I'm off to breakfast with my pilot friend - who knows what he'll have in mind to "enhance" my Can-Am layout![:)]

Well, my significant accomplishments for yesterday were: cutting all of the shelf pieces to size in order to complete my "oval in the sky" run for the Polar Express - and - locating/ordering the "night sky" wallpaper for use as a background as the Lionel chugs its way 'round and 'round. I'm pleased[tup].

Tomorrow I'm taking a round trip aboard Amtrak between Kirkwood, MO (just west of downtown St. Louis) and Jefferson City (capital). Good "turn around" time to catch the eastbound - less than an hour IF Union Pacific's freights don't gum up the works! I usually go all the way to Kansas City (5 hours one way), but my pilot buddy is a WUSS from the get go and only can handle a 4 hour round trip! It's my birthday present to him - you'd think he would have opted for the longer trip ....... maybe he's trying to tell me something[;)]!
===========================================
Teffy
QUOTE: Siber:
After looking at your layout anything would be pale by comparison. How do you get to play with the Polar Express up that high?

Teffy - I think the pictures must not do justice insofar as the height of the basement ceiling is concerned. It's less than 8 ft, with the shelf about 10 inches lower. So the views are fine - and the transformer will be located in the old desk I used for my master controls for the HO layout. It has one of those pull out typewriter shelves - perfect for mounting the Lionel power pack. Should be easy to "play with."[:D] Appreciate the kind words .........

They already have - confiscated all of our Monopoly money years ago![}:)]

Attaboy
QUOTE: Siberianmo, don't be sure all the women were looking for work for their husbands. My mother and sister are wallpapering fiends. Just the mention of wallpaper gets them salivating. A little like all of us and trains.

You may be right - some of these ladies were going about their searches like locusts ravaging corn fields! My guess is that if you stand still long enough, they would wallpaper right over you![:D]

SteveBlackledge
QUOTE: SIBERIANMO, not got any more pics of the bullet train but i am going there in a few weeks again so i'll take some more pics

Steve - Looking forward to seeing them. Safe trip! Also, my apologies for the typo with your name ....... apparently my fingers got stuck between the keys![;)]

SilverSpike
QUOTE: Siberianmo, Again, great photos of the layout and shelf display case. I admire your train room, the functionality level gives me something to shoot for in my new room!

Ryan - One of these days (before there aren't any left!) I'm going to take the "City of New Orleans" from Chicago to New Orleans. I used to fly down your way at least 4 times a year over a 5 year period. Great town! Saw a football game at the Superdome years ago - Saints & Jets. Horrible seats - couldn't get any higher - and the game was worse![8D]

Thanx for the compliment ...... [tup]

Hey Phil! [tup[tup][tup] Happy to learn all went well! My positive thoughts for a speedy and full recovery. Tom in Chesterfield, MO (Siberianmo).

philnrunt
QUOTE: TomWatkins,Siberianmo, KenLarsen and trolleyboy- Spent the last 3 hours working on USS#1, ..... I sure do like these engines....

Sounds like you ARE having fun NOW![:D]

Brent [#welcome] I'm a comparative newcomer too - this place is GREAT! Really a nice way to spend an hour or more ....... Never know who you will "meet," or just what you will see ..... coffee isn't bad either - BUT - watch out for those "trendy" guys with their gloppies - goopies - smoothies and otherwise distortions of a GOOD CUPPA JOE![:D] Tom in Chesterfield, MO (Siberianmo)
========================================
Check this place out for lunch! This building is now called the "Trainwreck Saloon" and is located about 15 miles from my home. Kinda nice to have a model that you can "relate" to! The actual name of the model is "Nine Mile House & Tavern" and can be found in Walthers - American Model Builders 152-145 for those who are interested. I know it comes in HO and N scale.

G'day!
Happy Railroading! Siberianmo

Paul, I got the winch engine from the fellow whos property the club track is on. He has six of them. There are slight variations in the winches. I chose the one that had flywheels that are 24" from inside to inside. I thought about maybe welding a flange around the flywheels or making a new tire with flange and running it direct on the track. Got to go to work this morning so any work on the loco is going to have to wait for a month or two, till I get back home.
Sure wish I could find a job where I could just stay home, and they sent the check to me anyway!!

Addendum: Doesn't look like I'll be posting pics here. The process is just too much trouble, so,,, if you want to see pics of the winch and my progress on the loco, its HoinanRV on yahoo groups.

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers

A bit humid and sticky this morning. Still overcast, although I expect the sun to burn through later this morning.

Got the fan blowing on me so it’s still bearable. And we have some good hot coffee to start things off right. Probably won’t be all that long until I’ll be switching to iced coffee in the evenings.

Flip, that’s excellent news about the operation. I’m sure you both are relieved. Congratulations. [tup]

[#welcome] Welcome to the forum, Doctorg. Nice to have another spacially challenged person on board. I’ve got an N scale layout built on a 3’x 6’-8” hollow core wood door because of lack of space. Wyoming you say?

[#welcome] And also welcome to Brent in Queensland.
QUOTE: Well anyways I'll say hello and I hope Mitch can Introduce me to a couple of people.
Consider yourself introduced. Just help us out with a bit more info about yourself and your hobby interests.

QUOTE: Ken L : Do you see a lot of American freight cars and/or motive power where you’re at?
Unfortunately, where I’m at I don’t even see any Mexican cars or motive power. There’s no railroad within 120 miles of here. 50-60 years ago there were a couple of industrial (read petroleum industry) short lines in the area, but all long gone with no trace left. That's one reason my layout is freelanced.

From what I understand and the limited exposure to trains I’ve had down here, my feeling is that there is very little, if any, sharing of motive power with US roads. There might be an occasional KCS unit in the northeast on the TFM line, as it’s a subsidiary of KCS. And an occasional TFM unit finds its way up north. But it’s the exception rather than the rule. Cars are different, and there is an assortment of US road cars to be found. Still the majority of what I’ve seen is Mexican road.

Of course, because of the limited exposure I’ve had, it could turn out that I’m totally wrong. It’s just one data point (datum?).

QUOTE: (northern)Phil: …I’m not sure if I could have done this type of work even when I did have good eyes. But back then, I know I didn't have the patience to do it…
I too have noticed that I have a lot more patience these days than when I was younger. Not to say I’ve totally calmed down, but I’ve come a long way.

QUOTE: Attaboy: .. save the avocado for St. Pat's Day on Thursday..
Good idea. I’ll see what I can come up with as a decent recipe.

Ryan, yes I would be interested in the avocado soup recipe, thanks. Can you email it?

You guys have a good day. I’ll see you in the afternoon.

Regards

Ed

Good morning, all--usual Vienna Roast and Tuna Blintz, if you don't mind the smell, Chloe (or is it Zoe on shift, today?). Spooky decided not to rug-surf all night with Wiley, so she's up and at 'em this morning. She's anxious to help me make furnace-filter trees today (she shreds the stuff for me), says I've got enough pines, it's time for some high-Country Fir. She'd like a Redwood or two, but I keep telling her we're not that close to the Coast, would a couple of Sequoia's do, instead? Almost the same thing.

[#welcome] Brent--you've probably already found out what I did--it's a pretty cool bunch of people on this forum.

Der: Keep those MENSA's coming, will you? I'm going to collect them and e-mail them to some of my faculty friends at the school--they're absolutely hilarious!! LOVE the definition of 'Re-InTarnation!!'

TomW: Yah, have to keep those Yellowstones happy, otherwise the grumbling might spread and my 2-10-2's will start objecting to those Drag Freights and the 2-8-8-2's might balk at the daily coal train from Utah. Never know about steam, do you? At least my Northern's are happy with their new Troop Train and the 4-8-2's will haul anything I want to put behind them (no Prima Donna's in THAT wheel-arrangement, thank God!). Although I will say that my 2-8-0 is getting anxious for that BLI 'Talking' cattle car to arrive (so am I.).

Ken: Glad you reminded me about the kids--I'll tell Fr. Anthony to catch the little warts as they come out of Easter Mass, LOL! Maybe he can do a fast "ZAP!" as they run by.

Well, Spooky's anxious to start shredding furnace-filters for the forest, so I guess I'd better get moving on the layout. Have a great day, guys--check in later.

CatTom

Hi John! Actually, the weather was looking like the western part of TX might be getting some wet stuff soon (rain or snow, depending on whether it actually makes it to the ground or not). We'll wait for Teffy's weather report on that, though.[;)]

Will pray for your board appearanceconfirmation Thursday. Once you get the job, you should be close enough maybe for a trip to visit Teffy or Ed, right? Now, that April 1st start date - they're not pulling your leg, are they? [;)]

Blessings, and see you later,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jim, I was in TX for the training part the last 2 weeks - that's why I was not on as frequent. My job will never change, unless I bid on a new one and get offered the position. The April 1st date - the date that my new pay grade (rank) should take effect.

Afternoon all

Well, have completed my last day of uni before easter break - I now have 3 weeks off! Think I'll start on the unfinished backscene tomorrow - I'm aiming for a sky blue on the whole thing (this is the best my minimal artistic skills can achieve!) which looked fairly effective on the board I painted a while ago. The loco rebuilds have also finished, here's the second one to come back from the spares box:

It's one of the Fleischmann N scale rack-equipped locos. If you run them on the rack-fitted track they also offer it'll handle a 30degree gradient - have been considering a small (horizontally, very tall vertically) mountain layout for it, would basically be a scenic helix with a station at either end. It does make a great little yard switcher though - 6 wheel pickup, very low gearing, bodyshell is literally full of ballast weights.

Ryan, thanks for the kind words about the photo - currently keeping eyes open for more matching cars! The two I have seem to be sleepers of some sort judging by the interior mouldings and window pattern, I know where I can get hold of a baggage car to go with them (assuming the store still has it) but need to talk my parents into going to Cardiff for the day!

CatTom, BLI are doing a sound-equipped stock car? I know LGB have offered similar things in G scale. Wonder whether you'll be able to configure it for different livestock? could be set up so F1 = cows, F2 = sheep, etc!

Weather here is grey and somewhat warm - yesterday seemed very humid outdoors though inside it's cool and dry as always (they knew how to build houses back in 1905 - 2ft airspace under the downstairs floorboards and 8ft high ceilings, so even in midsummer it's a sensible temperature in here!).

Well, currently awaiting return of mum and brother from school (she teaches, he's in his last year). Have to take her car out to the garage this evening for servicing - interesting arrangement as we'll be dropping it off outside the garage and posting the keys through the letterbox! Gives a hint of what life's like out here I guess , that the garage can happily let people do that and not worry about break-ins.

Bye for now

Hey guys. Well since everyone wants to know so much about me I'l start off with the trains. I'm still in school so modeling is on the backburner at the moment so thats why I draw trains on the computer. I will model the QR in HOn30 when I finish school and thats pretty much it. I'm 14, a year older than Mitch, in grade 9. I like to go trail riding on my mountain bike, drawing cars helps pass the time for me and I can creatively express myself. Well that raps it up for me so I'll be off, I gotta go to school so cya fellas oh and Zoe can I have my lunch now?

Then you must be hip to the HOn30 Depot. I'm planning on building a micro layout. It's a continuous multi level called "Into the Hills". Click HERE to see the track plan.
For motive power, I'm building a Mark Rollins kit of a Class A, vertical boiler Climax in HOn30.

Afternoon everyone.... it's 12:15 here in Cali and it's sunny out.... with lots of wind now and again.

As Tim has Mentioned there is the possibility that we will be getting some rain this weekend out here.... the storm is spliting in two on it's way here from Hawaii.

Looked up some prices for lumber at Lowes and I figured it's going to cost me about $55 for my benchwork.... give or take a couple dollars depending on what is in stock.

[#welcome] to the new guys and hope you all enjoy Virtually everything on the menu.

If you want weird town names we've got them. Depending on my route home I can pass through Moriah (shades of Lord of The Rings), Goginan, and assorted other oddball names. Some of the Welsh ones are good for puzzling tourists too - try saying "Cwmystwyth" (it's a tiny village on the mountain road - name means "Valley of the river ystwyth". Places named "Aber" (as in Aberystwyth) are usually found on the coast (it means "mouth (of the river)"), though quite how Abergavenny manages to be about 50 miles inland is beyond me! I suspect a lot of the weirder ones are in fact English manglings of the Welsh name - how else would you end up with a village named "Bow Street" between Aberystwyth and Borth?

Afternoon Zoe and HPVTsunami! Zoe, an OJ smoothie - want something sweet this afternoon, and it seems too late for a cinnamon roll (to me).

[#welcome] Brent - good to have another OZzie in the Shop! Another deep-fried guy, huh? Guess that frier here in the Coffee Shop will get more of a workout, now.[;)] As others have asked, please tell us about what kind of layout/modeling you do (off -puter) - era? steam/diesel? Scale (Horribly Oversized / Normal / Zimpossible / Supersize me)? etc. How long have you been into MRR'ing?

[#welcome] Doctorg Jim, from another Jim. And who says there's not enough room for HO?? There's always room for HO (IMHO). Might want to show her some of Iain Rice's small layouts (like the one he's had running in MRR several months - tail end of last year through about Jan. or Feb. issue of this year, the Roque Bluffs one). He has a MRR/Kalmbach book on smaller layouts, too. But if you have to 'downgrade' to Normal scale (as some call it), I guess you can adapt. [;)] Both Jim and Brent, have a beverage of your choice on me(deep-fried or not), and fill us in on what your prefs for you layout are/will be. Era, steam and/or diesel, how long you've been modeling, etc.

Georgia Tom, it seems like you've been having a lot of those rainy days there - you and California. Do you feel like Joe Sblqwski (not sure on the spelling - the guy from Li'L Abner who walked around with the raincloud over his head all the time, if you are old enough to recall that comic strip)[;)]

Siberianmo, you're probably right about the women wallpapering over you. [(-D]

TurboTim, will pray for no more trips to the doctor/hospital anytime soon for you or your family. Get them well before the next batch of rain comes in. Maybe the rain will split and go around you on either side. Sure hope so.

Hope everyone stays above flood level. Der John, ***, Fergie (if you're able to check in) and our other NS/Northern people - how's the snow melting (hopefully it is)?

Blessings on your afternoons and evenings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Chloe, I could use something sweet – how about: A tall glass of limeade with a few scoops of lime sorbet thrown in?

Hello rail clubbers, been in the office all day, nothing new on the layout front.

DoctorG Jim, [#welcome]. Choose a drink, it'll be my treat.

Ryan,
Take a look at the [July 1994] photo in the link below – do you recognize the structure in the background?

Well, just in fast, Every teacher I have(which is only three, but still) decided to pile on the homework today, and on top of it I'm afraid I'm comming down with a 24 hour flu. My mom had it a while ago, and I think I'm getting it now. Ed, if you could quick ship a car of OJ up to the Reedsburg Co-op, the Wisconsin and Southern local will be comming up tomarrow again and I can pick it up after dusk. I need some OJ about now.

Just to let you all know Friday I'll make my last post for a while. It's my Spring Break and the Family is going to vist some realatives in San Fransisco. I hope to get in some railfanning and I will create a page on my Website for it when I get home. I may get a chance to get in one fast vist in the middle of next week, but I doubt it.

Well, it's four thirty central, I have some internet research to do for science(Family classification of a Racoon), and then I think I'll lie down for a while before supper. I'll see you all later.

Good Afternoon All:

I thought ya'll might like to see some pictures of the Florida M.E.S.S. I'm not going to tell you who it belongs to, but I will tell you that his favorite person is Debbie. and he lives in middle Fla. DO WE WANT TO HAVE A CONTEST FOR A FREE CUP OF COFFEE FOR THE FIRST PERSON TO GUESS THE RIGHT OWNER?

AND

AND

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one with a lot of STUFF.

Ken:
Is that your better half standing in the French Quater with you? I can't think of the name of the church but I can tell you that it's across from the Jackson Brewery. Women love the Jackson Brewery and all of those little shops.

Ya'll enjoy

TEFFY, it wouldn't happen to be Flip's M.E.S.S. by some chance.
