Good evening gents, first, prayers and best wished for Deb and Flip, and a speedy recovery for Deb.

Another beautiful day today, cloudless sky, 40 degrees...Spring is here at 7:33am Sunday morning, and we ahve nearly 12 hours of sunlight now, so the snowpack is melting away.

Wasn't able to work on the layout planning yesterday or today, I had a mini flood in the basement. At first I thought that this was a leak at the floor/basement wall interface with all the melting snow, however it turned out to be a faulty expansion tank on the furnace. It was causing the over-pressure valve to open and release heated water out the overflow pipe. I finally saw it happen as I was looking for the floor leak...$146 fix for this one!!

GA TOM Tom, you are getting your share of fowl weather down there in the mountains lately. The storm track has moved south, we are in the sun now for 7 days.

Teffy Thanks for the info on the radii. I want to use larger radii also, but with a 10' wide room, I will have to plan carefully. Any suggestions?

JIM Yes, I am relieved, but it looks like you guys are in the storm track now, we have had 4 days of great weather with 4 more to come. HEY, are you picking on HD?? I am part owner of that company you know.... ( a very little part owner, haha )

ROB (Pa) I have a large space on the 2nd floor of my garage ( not attached to the house) that I plan to use for expansion of MRR later in time. I was planning to use a wood fired furnace, called Central Boiler. It is installed outside, can be up to 100 feet from the house or garage, uses large wood, like LOGS etc 3-4 feet long. I saw one in use here, the guy heats his large old farmhouse, a pool outside (summer), and his workshop/garage. He has had it running continuously for 10 years. Just throws a log, or skids, or other wood he has into the furnace every day or two. It is forced hot water system. I am seriously thinking of getting one, as I have an ample supply of wood here.

Flip; Great news about Deb. I was thinking about you two this morning as I went about turning on my stuff in the park. I check out the animations at the mine train every morning and blow a salute to the folks sailing on the Great Lakes. One long and two short. As I was doing that today I thought about you guys.

Gees, Teffy that was a tough one. I mean you could have given us a clue. Rob you are one sharp fellow. Bob you sent me into arrest for a minute there with that 29 comment. I just turned in my vacation request for the 28 today.


Noah; Take care of yourself. Rest and drink lots of fluids. Lets see is it feed a cold and starve a feaver or starve a cold and feed a feaver. I can never remember, so I feed them both.

Not much happening on the model railroadering front. I've been too busy with the ranch stuff. Our daughter and grand daughter are coming Saturday so we have to get the house ready. Poor Mary Ann gets stuck with all that normally. Since I'm off thurs and fri I'm going to try and help out.

On the weather front; it's going to get down to freezing tonight. We didn't get alot of rain. In fact only a couple of sprinkles. The cold is the kind that goes plum to your bones.

Well, might be I celibrated too soon.Deb has numbness and tingling sensation in her right hand and the arm is weak. Did a catscan and took x-rays. Could be either just swelling [we hope] or the screws are in to far causing the pressure on the nerves. The dr. will be in to see her 'tween 8&9 a.m. My toes fingers and eyes are crossed. Not to mention some prayers to ya'll know who. Thanks again for your words of encouragement and your prayers on Deb's behalf.

That church in NOLA is the Cabildo(spelling?) with Jackson Square park in front of it. I spent my eighteenth birthday mostly passed out under a bush just to the right in the picture. Eighteen was the drinking age then(telling my age) and it was one heck of a birthday party![:D]

On the car front, I talked with one of the car guys today - he said he had a white Lincoln (but Lincolns are soooo not my car style - I’m into trains, not boats[4:-)]...[;)]) and a 94 Taurus (which he needs to clean up; just got it in). So probably (if I can snag a ride there with a friend) Saturday or maybe Friday, I’ll go look at what he has. Need to call another place on the Izuzu pickup about seeing that too. Well, thought I'd check in before I go hit the sack--VERY productive day, Spooky was shredding the furnace filters as fast as I could stick them on the shishkabob thingys, paint them, spray them with cheap hair spray (Aqua-net: Ye Gods, people actually USE that stuff on their hair? It's like liquid epoxy!) , dip them in the ground foam and plant the little devils. Got some pine, some fir, and just because Spooky was working so hard, I used some really TALL shishkabob thingys and built her a couple of Sequoias. Stuff looks pretty good--good enough for 'close-up' trees at the front of the layout, and are easier than all get-out to make. Anyway got a lot of forest planted, and even ran the first train into Sierra City, much to the delight of the population, who came out of the woods expecting a Yellowstone, only I borrowed a BLI ATSF Northern for the job (I needed some REAL noise!). They were so happy they didn't even notice that I haven't paved their main street yet, but they didn't seem to mind the raw plaster. We mountain folk are used to roughing it, LOL! Though several of them complained to me about that big Mason jar of ballast that I left standing near Perryman's Pub.

Matt: Yes, BLI's promising an HO 'talking' motion-sensor stock-car. Cattle or pigs (sorry, no sheep, which would have been really interesting). I'm looking forward to it, so's #1159, my little Rio Grande 2-8-0. The way that chunky little devil rocks and rolls with a cattle train, it should be one noisy trip for the critters.

Lil'Rob: We can't forget the Canadian River, either, can we? Only other place on the entire Texas Panhandle (besides irrigation ditches) that you can go to climb things. Dumb me, I associate Canada with lots of evergreens, figured that's why the Texans named it the 'Canadian', kept looking for them along the river--nope, just cottonwoods. Actually, had trouble FINDING the river the first time I went there--seems it likes to flow underground a lot. But Palo Duro Canyon was a sight to behold, all right!

Well, time to turn in. Have to pave a street tomorrow and put a parking lot in at the hotel, so Ma doesn't have her customers trapising plaster all over her new carpeting Her Electrolux is on the fritz, she had to send it all the way to Sacramento for repairs, and instead of sending it by train which she can do now, she sent it with her son Jimmy, in his '29 Ford truck--the one with the extra gas tank for hauling moonshine. Hope she gets it back some day. I also hope that Jimmy--who's not very swift--doesn't unload the wrong gas tank at Eddie's Place in Nevada City--that could make for some really INTERESTING occurrances when the loggers and the miners get off shift!

Oh yeah, babeeee- Spent most of last night with the boyz, got pretty much what I hoped for done, still don't have CA to finish 'em, went to W Mart today with a new prescription-dr said I was doing pretty good- and they MESSed around and finally told me 20 minutes later that they were out of what I needed, come back tomorrow. Ah well, little did they know I had 2 SDs so I had the strength of 10! And my heart was pure.

Kenlarsen- Yeah, but if everybody did it "right", where would this world be?Mistakes keep me in a job(unfortunately) and most other eople one way or another. Or people, as the case may be. As for a functional layout, isn't that like a functional family? Heard of 'em, but few and far betwixt. And not nearly as interesting as the disfunctional ones.
Tomwatkins- Those magniviewers definitely came in handy, but I need to get my own pair to get used to 'em. Anytime I tried to look away from the work I had 2 inches from my nose, it was like I was hammered, staggering around with my arms extended like a drunk Frankenstine's Monster. I might just order a pair from Micromark. It was fun to read the tiny printing.
Siberianmo- Oh yeah, funs a poppin' now. They are great models, and I'd forgotten how much fun it is to work on detailing diesels. Now Tomwatkins and Ed would say diesels don't have any detail, but we know they really do. Steam engines always scare me that something is going to break loose at high speed, and then BANG! -there goes New Jersey! But they are fun to watch. From a distance and behind sandbags, that is.
Ed- Iced coffee......you dawg. Around here, if you want iced coffee, just take over 2 minutes to drink it!
Ed and bjdukert- I absolutely agree with you, patience is something that I sure could have used about 30 years ago, but, as with so many things dealing with growing older, life plays it's little tricks and drives you to having patience or an early grave. In other words- Lets WALK down there and do all of those cows.
JimRCG- I just assumed your shortline was , shall we say, fiscally conservative, and only a RR flush with cash could afford 2 stripes! It's a great scheme, either way, it has the right feel to it. And isn't Mitchell good at that stuff. He should get into computer graphic design. He certainly has a knack for it.
Did I mention that my friend,( the one on the drug task force) found a Nickel Plate track diagram book at a local Antique Store?He snagged it for 12$, and passed it on to me. IIRC it has the Ft Wayne and Chicago Divs, all laid out and industries listed, looks like it came from about 1952, I think it was a road foremans copy. I have it laid out trying to flatten the pages now. Pretty neat. Do any of the rest of you have anything like that? I also have an Erie Lackawanna engine foreman's book with diagrams of all of the diesels he has access to, circa 1960 or so. Great drawings and details, down to what type of water cooler is installed!

Good Mornin' Everybody,
Well the dreaded "winter Mix" seems not to have materialized. It's stayed just warm enough (34) to keep everything liquid. It's just cold, gray and yucky. Today will be an inside day for sure. There are only a few odds and ends to get done and then it's off to the basement. I'm going to start laying up the embankment behind the interchange yard in Murphy. The yard sits down on the "bottom land" alongside the river, with the town above it. The bank is quite steep with lots of exposed rock faces. It should be interesting to see how it develops.

Siberianmo, I really like the night sky backdrop! The Polar Express will look great in front of it. The AMB tavern turned out super. They are nice kits to work with.

Cat Tom, Nope, steam is nothing if not tempermental. It's best to keep steamers as happy as possible. Whose 4-8-2' s and 2-8-0's are you running. Mine are Spectrums and I really like them.

Matt, enjoy your holiday!. That is a good looking locomotive.

Tim, I'm sorry to hear about the sickness and hospitalizations in your family. Hopefully it's not terribly serious and everybody will be on the mend soon. We'll keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Grayfox, basement floods are no fun at all, regardless of the cause. I'm glad you were able to see it happen and get it fixed. Enjoy the good weather. After a long string of cold, wet, ugly days, the sunshine is wonderful stuff.

PhilnRunt, detailing diesels is fun. So is running them. It's just different from steam. Actually, I'd rather have faith in my maintenance crew than have to watch steam, or anything else from behind sandbags. I hope never to have to fill sandbags again.
Congrats on finding the Nickle Plate track diagram book. They are fascinating things. I've got a copy of one on the L&N's Hook and Eye Line and it's really super stuff.

The weather was so bad yesterday that we didn't go to work, that's the first time I can remember ever "just playing hookie". I played trains most of the day and tried to figure out where to put all of the junk so Ed, Paul, and Lilrob can see the layout all at one time.

How is the BS doing, it seems like I've been around 150 now for about 2 months and the Dr is probably going to change my medication, after all I just bought a six month supply.

WHAT DETAIL DOES A deisel HAVE? It's a rectangular box with a coupler on each end. I went railfanning about a year ago with some of the guys in the club and was amazed at how they could spot "whatever" by the number of louvers on the battery box door. I mean a 2-8-2 doesn't look anything like a 2-8-8-2. Pick - pick - pick. Us slow people with bad eyes have to do steam so we can tell the difference.

On the maginifiers, look very strong at "Optiviser" as you can buy several different lenses, I use a "4" for most things but I do have a "10" but it's focal length is very short. I'm thinking about getting a "7" as it's a better maginifaction then the "4" but a longer focal length then the "10".

Twhite:
A lot of the Texas rivers are underground, it slows evaperation. Most of the San Antonio/Austin area gets their water from the Edwards Plateau Aquafier.

I've got all of the material to build Aggro's trees now I just need to find the time.

I'm going to call the Conroe FD and be sure what exit you take off I-45 and then I'll send you and e-mail with the instructions.

Sun is actually shining in Cape Girardeau today - I'll have to take back my previous statement on our weather. It's supposed to hit the 60’s today (temperature - we’re not talking a time machine here)[;)]

How are things in the GWN? Flurries off and on, and the snow is on the defensive, I would say.

On the place names front, I can offer Sober Island, where we live, and 2 communities just down the road, Necum Teuch and Ecum Secum. Matt and Steve, have you noticed how directions are often given in terms of either churches or pubs? For instance, to go into Morden from I my home, I would take the road either past the Crown, or past St. Lawrence's. Seems like it's much the same in NO. [:D]

Have the parts for my power source, now I need the time to build it. Have to sort out some computer problems first.

Morning all--and happy St. Patrick's day to all of you Irish out there (can't qualify, I'm German, Austrian and Cornish--no wee bit o'Erin there at all, darn it!). Was thinking of corned beef and cabbage tonight, when Spooky reminded me that where SHE'S from, it's just called a New England Boiled Dinner. Hm. Well, we have a variation on it too, only it's called Sauerbraten. I understand from friends that in Dublin, they just go for Chinese takeout. Oh well--

TomW: My 4-8-2's are Custom Brass and Sunset, except for a couple of neat Spectrums, (next to Yellowstones, I'm a real 4-8-2 freak) and my 2-8-0 is an old New Jersey (?) Brass import that I remotored a couple of years ago. Cute little devil, the side-rods hang so low that it cuts weeds along the right-of-way.

Tim: The new storm is splitting, so we're BOTH supposed to get it! And we were in the 80's just a couple of days ago. Glad my plaster's dry!

Bob: Spent four years in the Texas Panhandle when I was in the service. It was pretty much "Terrain Shock" for a boy from the Sierra Nevada, but Texans certainly know the meaning of the word 'hospitality'. Enjoyed my time there, took me a year to get rid of my 'Panhandle Accent' after I got back to California--the girls thought it was just NEAT!. And like I said, Palo Duro Canyon is just beautiful!!

Flip: My prayers for you and Debbie. Had a 'swelling' a couple of years ago, it turned out to be a very common subcutaneous cyst. May that be all it is.

Der: Got the e-mail--many thanks. It got forwarded to the proper people, I should hear gales of laughter coming from the direction of the High School any minute now.

Noah: LOTS of orange juice, fella. And some asprin. You're probably too young for the other cure, which is to use a shot of Myer's Rum in the OJ. It doesn't actually cure the flu, but after a couple of glasses, you get to the point where you don't care if you're sick or not.

Well, got to get paving today--cloudy out and they're predicting rain beginning tomorrow for several days. Hate these false California 'Springs', you'd think I'd be used to them by now at my age. Spooky says 'hi', she's shredding more furnace filter material right now. Doesn't think my forest is thick enough. Hey, gal, one project at a TIME, okay?

Good Day and Happy St. Patricks Day! Green Beer for all the o'lucky gents in the establishment today!

Well the chill is in the air again here in the Deep South, low 40's, too cold for us this time of year. I know that temp is nothing compared to you northern bretheren, but we are used to the warm and temperate climate. I think the taxes are finally done, one more pass over it tonight and then the better half gets to review it once, and then e-file away and hope the refund comes sooner than later. I just hope the CFO lets me allocate some refund funds for the model railroad cause. I see benchwork in my future! Lowe's just sent me a coupon in the mail for 12 months interest free if I spend $299.00 or more per total purchase on their credit card before April 12th. Timing just might be right for the benchwork lumber and hardware purchases.

Well there is a die hard contingent of true Saints fans that still see the games no matter the score or record. I have not been to a game in over 5 years, they used to sell out before the blackout so I could see them on TV locally until last year. They got so bad the games started not to sell out in time to lift the local TV blackout, so my interest in them has fallen off too! As we seem to say every year, "SOS - Same Old Saints", and "Well, theres always next year." Did you watch the superbowl? I loved that one ad the NFL put out where all these players were singing, "...after today were all undefeated." I loved that one. New Orleans has it's own personality and culture, unlike any other city. Look me up when you make it down to the "Big Easy" agian. BTW, I love that tavern you built, looks great!

Is that a family vacation photo? A trip to New Orleans would not be compete without a trip to Cafe DuMonde for cafe au lait and then a short walk to Jackson Square. Kind of looks like it was a cloudy day then, it does rain alot in the summer afternoons. BTW, great news on the new server allocations! We upgraded four of ours last year, and still have three more left to migrate this year.

I saw somewhere someone had built one of those dollys you lay on like them mechanics do for workin under cars. That might help too, but solder dripping from wires might get a little messy, still thinking that one over! Any ideas?

That would be Flip Phil's layout! And you are correct about Jackon Square and Jackson Brewery, the church is the Saint Louis Catherial Catholic Church. The Cabildo is the building on the left, and the Presbetaire is the building on the right side.

Sorry to hear about Deb, I hope she is feeling better soon! The after effects of surgery can last a few days, hopefully she will be feeling better soon. Our prayers are with you both!

Yep, everyone eats to live, but in New Orleans we live to eat! Speaking of escargot, Escargot et Artichot is a recipe we used to do as an appetizer when I was a chef at the Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue many years ago. Escargot sauted in an herb garlic butter sauce and then all poured over a steamed artichoke, YUM! Gotta love it!
