Luct, I like that, I hadn’t seen that one, will have to show that to my parents.

Well, I’m definitely much better today, but I still am a little sick. We only have a half day of school tomorrow, followed by a day off on Friday, due to the quarter ending. I predict a day of modeling on Friday.[:D] I’d like to get the area with the new buildings on my layout cleaned up, the new switch installed, and the plans drawn up for the paper building I’ll be scratch building this summer, they’ve changed from the last version I drew. I’ve also got a schematic set up for the ARK sub, and I’m coming pretty well with the design. I’ve just got to measure siding lengths for the schematic.

I guess I better get going, but before I go give be some deep fried chicken soup and a side of deep fried tea.

Good Evenin' Everybody,
Today was another good day in the mountains. It was gray and dreary all day, and pretty chilly, but good nontheless. The supertrees are ready to flock. I couldn't find a brownish gray spray paint that I liked, so I mixed a batch of 1/2 roof brown and 1/2 harbor mist gray and airbrushed them. It got very chilly outside the basement door and I was glad to get that finished. I also got a bunch of polyfiber "puffball" background trees ready to flock.

Unfortunately, tomorrow will be a work day on the bathroom, so the trees will have to wait a day or so. Oh well, progress is still being made.

Philnrunt, I really like the supertrees. I've used them before and think they are really good. It takes some time to clean the seed pods off, but that really improves their appearance. I soak them in diluted matt medium for about an hour and hang them upside down to dry. This helps to preserve them. If the "trunk" isn't straight a pair of tweezers or a couple of clothes pins hooked onto the stem will straighten them out. When they dry they stay straight. Then it's just paint them, flock them and plant them. They really do look as good as the ones in the ads. I also think the smaller ones could be used to make great branches for sage bru***rees. I've got some sage clippings too, but I haven't tried that yet.

Luct, I really enjoyed the lessons. There is a lot of wisdom in them.

Ed, I've come to realize that falling just isn't a good idea anymore. I don't bounce nearly as well as I used to.

Der, orange peel + CO2 = plastic. That is absolutely fascinating. If it can be developed so it's economically viable it could have a huge effect in a lot of areas.

Fergie, so it's going to be a 4-6-6-4. Excellent ! It should look good with the Mess's heraldry on it. Enjoy.

Noah, Bill Mathewson is doing fine. He's getting his woodworking business up and going. The current major project is building a bar for a customer who's having trouble deciding what he wants. We went to the Atlanta model railroad swap meet last Saturday. Possibly next week we're going to go railroad exploring up around Murphy NC and Copper Hill Tn. We've postponed that a couple of times due to other things needing to be done, so we'll see what happens. I'll tell him you asked about him.

Hope the weather has improved a bit for those of you in the midst of a northern winter. We had another pretty good day down here. Got up in the high 70’s. I’m back to shorts and sandals. [8D]

As we’re in the middle of the orange harvest, the FCVN is just busting with all the traffic. With the additional task of supplying a tank car of OJ, and a fruit reefer with fresh oranges each day to those affected by the winter, traffic is up to a total of one tank car and one reefer a day. Yeah, we’re not exactly located in a hotbed of rail activity here. Whatever……….

I went to the doctor today and got a shot, he said that should finish off my sore throat / chest cold / head cold AND I can head back to work on Thursday evening. Still not 100 % but on the mend and after one more night of rest should be much better tomorrow. [:D]


To All Who Have Served In Any War For The Cause Of True Freedom

After watching Windtalkers I was once again impressed with the great sacrifices that all branches of the military went through to help keep the world a safer place. Many countries contributed to the great effort of WWII to insure a safer world. To all who served in that war or any war since, I say "Thank You, so very much." I don't believe Prince Harry understands the sacrifices that his older countrymen had to put up with or he would have choosen a different costume. Definately not the best choice for a costume in a nation that endured so much hardship duing the war years.

Der, though I could try to blame it on Teffy's persuasive verbal skills on the phone, I had already been thinking about the teensy-weensy radii on a 4X8 and that sooner or later, I want to add what I have into a larger layout. (Besides, the stingy side of me doesn't want to just write off whatever $$ I put into the first layout when I go to a room-sized layout later...[;)][:D])

I'm really 99 percent settled on Iain's switching/industrial shelf layouts (in the pages I suggested for Mitchell, out of the Rice book: 'Small, Smart & Practical Track Plans'). I'm going to take roughly the plan of the middle of page 28, but use the tracks for the left side from the top one and run an enginehouse with the double tracks instead of a boat float. That, and widening it from about 18 to 24 inches. Gives me an engine servicing area plus four or so industry areas to switch cars to/from, and a side track for staging. Tomorrow I'm going to go get a wide roll of paper and start drawing it life size. Then come Friday I'll see about getting one of my plywood sheets out of the storage unit and see about transferring it to that.

BTW, can anyone tell me if the Atlas Custom-Line brass switches for code 100 are laid out about like the current nickel-silver switches? And are they similar to code 83 nickel silver switches (or not)? Comments/recommendations on good (but not too expensive) switches? Peko?/Atlas?/others?... [%-)]

Better finish up my hot cocoa and get going for now. I left a box of donuts for the late night/early a.m. crew (there're chocolate coated ones in there, too!).

Believe it or not I wish I had another 50' of main line to let the Brutes do their thing. I have about 60" of main line in a contorted figure 8 and after a while it can be pretty mundane.

Talked breifly with Bob tonight( just 44mins) and he's doing fine but has puter problems. He'll be test driving the M-9 (MESS 900 series) 4-6-6-4 to see if it makes the grade. I still have to admit I'm a tad disapointed about the T-1 but I wasn't willing to saw the layout in two for the sake of an extra 2".

I'll get over it (probably not) and land up taking a chain saw down the centre line[}:)]

Hi gang; Well I had another overtime day. That's good for the mrr. I get to use half the OT money and Mary Ann gets the other half. There is a GATS show the first part of Feb and I'll have a few bucks to use there. I may get another Bachman 2-8-0.

Haven't gotten down to the basement in the last two days. I'll try again on Friday. Tomorrow will be an overtime day and we've got a grand opening at the banks new branch to go to. We may get lucky and win that 42" plasma TV. Yea, right. Any way it looks like they are going to have door prises. You don't suppose that they will have any HO stuff?

Just dropped in to say goodnight! Two good things happened today (among the many) I was into the LHS to do battle about the price of a LL N scale F40PH "on sale" for 3X what it should be. Examined it, found out I was right, and then found the self same loco for the right price in a pile of stuff more or less beside the "wrong" one! So I bought that, and the sales tax was waved!
Then the dapper gent who had been silently putting up with all that nonsense turned out to be Coffee Shop denizen Luct !!!![^][8D][:D]

From what I remember about Atlas brass 100 turnouts, they were the same as the nickel silver (or rather, the ns followed the brass dimensions.) I like Peco turnouts, but am not too keen about the way they engineer the code reduction in N.(80 to 53 with a wierd burried third of the rail in the ties.) If they do the same from 100 to 83, as I suspect, you might want to examine one carefully before making the choice. If you need lessons in careful study, ask Fergie! [(-D] I have also read in forum threads of people having difficulty recommending Shinohara turnouts. ( how's that for a CYA statement [}:)])

Jhhtrains- I actually think the flies are becoming year round acclimated! Seems like one of the MESS nuclear disposal trains had a leak and.....well now, not that I would want to place any blame! Ferg- It's good to see that even steely eyed sailors have trouble making decisions. I was always amazed at the thought that I could instantly decide to shoot a bad guy doing bad things, but when it comes to whether I'll get the RSD-15 or the 44 tonner, it takes months of soul searching. Well, you have to have your priorities straight, I guess.

It's going to be another great day in the mountains. It's supposed to get up into the mid 40's this afternoon and it looks like its going to be clear and beautiful. If I can get today's tasks in the downstairs bathroom done early enought, I should be able to get started putting the flock on the trees. That's the game plan anyway.

Ed, keep the OJ and the oranges coming. They're delicious and much appreciated. Yes sir, I'm very glad I opted out of the color selection process. That simplifies life considerably. The basic colors have already been chosen, sage green and cream. However, there are many, many different shades of each, so......... . Once again, that's OK. It gives me time to get the board and bead wainscoating cut and fitted. Once that's done it will be time for the final color coats.

Fergie, What scheme are you going to use on the Mess's Challenger? Will it be basic black with the heralds, or something fancier?

I'd better go for now. I 'd like to get this done quickly and get on to the fun part of the day.

This damn TV is about to drive me up the wall. Mom like the TV on all the time and I despise the darn thing. I much prefer to read, but to each his own.

I found out last night that a Genesis 4-6-6-4 will have trackage rights on the Almost Nothing on the way through to the M.E.S.S.

I haven't been able to do much MRRing as their has been to much to do

We went for our interview to become a member of the mediation team. They have a way of not letting you know how the interview went. Stephanie and I both feel that it was a good interview. They'll let us know Monday if we are picked.

I was very pleased with our trip and getting to meet so many of the posters.

From what was explained to me It will be black with graphite smoke box and grate. I think I'll be playing withis one as one of my locos, a generic CN Mountain by Mehano had a burgandy cherry red cab on it with yellow running board stripe, which didn't look bad.

I'll sleep on it for a while.

Well the "Alberta Clipper" has turned into a full storm and the class was cut short so I'm home and will have to do some self study. Anyway I'll be digging out tonight.

Luct/John how are you guys making out? I'm sorry I missed out on the rendezvous as it would have been worth seeing the look on George's face.

Sorry Ferg, I don't mean to be a tease. So far just Gary, but there may be more coming. In the meantime, I am getting back to work on it myself.

There are actually 2 towns in these pictures. Prescott Wisconsin is the passing siding near the wall with the pink foam roadbed already in place.

Hasitngs Minnesota is the more interesting track feature. In addition to the 15 foot siding, there is a runaround with an overflow / team track on one end and a small industrial track on the other. The primary industry is the Con Agra mill which is that piece of plywood with a switch on it, on the right side of the first photo. You can get a better idea of the layout from the second photo.

I have some sad news to report from the transportation industry...
Due to unforseen circumstances (CFO is looking at buying a 3 bdrm condo w/ NO basement and alot smaller than the house we rent (IE - No room for the layout)), Powell Transport and the East Syracuse (NY) Co-Op Industrial Park have temporairly ceased all operations.
Customers who are waiting on shipments and/or pick-up will have arrangements made w/ Class 1 Carrier CSX for these requests.

Good afternoon all: more snow shoveling this morning, the Alberta Clipper dropped 2.5 inches here, and it is 23F degrees now and mostly sunny sky. As I watched the storm last night on radar, it exploded in the Gulf of Maine, and it was obvious that our friends to the north, Fergie, Luc and John were going to be in for more than 6 inches. What was your final total guys??

And, as if this wasn't enough, the next Alberta Clipper is picking up much more energy from the Pineapple Express coming in over the Rockies, which means that when this storm jumps over the Appalachians to the coast off the Carolinas, we are going to have a very sizeable Nor'easter headed up the east coast into NE and NS!!! John, have you repaired your SB yet or are you checking out the latest and greatest ones? Better hurry!
And Tom, you might get into the action this time too with some snow in them thar mountains!!

BB 4005, you gave me an idea for my room that I am setting up. I can drill through the cement foundation wall in my present train room, and use this as the Hoosac Tunnel into the adjacent utility room. Of course I will have to move a few things around to make some track space, but that would give me an additional 10 x 12 foot space. Nice!!!

I have a Kodak DX6440. It has 4.0 megapixel resolution, 4x optical zoom. Some ability to override automatic settings if you want to do something outside the program. I got it with the dock/base. That base stays plugged into the computer, so when I put the camera back in the base (which automatically recharges the batteries) transferring photos to the computer is really just a push button operation.

I suppose there are better cameras, but this one works for me, and the price was reasonable.

I bought a separate 256k memory chip, so I can take lots of pix on vacations before having to download the chip to a CD in some drugstore.

if you use a regular camera you can still get them put on CD... I do believe most developing centers have this option,

Well, I’m off from school, so I think I’ll buy a round of drinks for everyone, stick it on my tab(which I probably should settle up one of these days, but I may have to go into debt to do it.) I also stuck some more cinnamon rolls in the oven, they should be out of the oven in a few minutes, nice and warm and sticky.

I’m watching the Inauguration Parade on the TV next to me, It’s quite interesting. They have a lot of good bands, very well organized.


Well the snow is falling around here. We might get as much as 10-12 inches, but more like around 7-9. Depends on which channel’s weather you watch.

I want to do some modeling yet today, so I better get going. I may get some pictures taken too (don’t hold your breath, but maybe). Enjoy the rolls, and I’ll talk to everyone later.
