Mornin y'all, hows it goin?

Got a lot of track cleaned last night, and went out this mornig and took some pics of the AT&L this morning. They have all five of their locos in town right now a GP7, GP9, CF7, GP10, and a switcher of some kind. Who made the CF7 anyway? Its kind of a weird looking thing[%-)]. Anyway, I put a pic in my signature, hope it works!!

Well, I want to thank all for the ideas/suggestions. It's great of you all to do this. I'm doing good and so's he and her. As I've stated, I think 'N' is too small for me as I've got alot of 1:87 / 1:60 cars (mostly Matchbox, some Hot Wheels, and some off-shoot of Majorette (Matisto?)) so it' would mean more money for vehicles that I don't have to replace one's I already do have. As for the layout, it's just 'on hold' till I get my own place some time after April/May. I'm attempting to get a 2 bdrm so 1 could be used for the layout w/ room left over for 'workshop' and if possible, expansion. I'm also going to look at loan rates and houses in the area I want to live in when the time comes (already have my VA cert so I can get a VA home loan), so that's another possibility.
Well, I'm working and it's time to actually get working.

Greg the CF7 was built by Santa Fe out of F7 locos, about 237 of them were made. The snow has come and is drifting seriously now. Is real hard to see where you are going on the roads so I'm staying inside and working on layout for the day.

Good afternoon everyone......the cable was out for a while today, so just getting back online. It is 7F degrees and a few lazy snow flakes falling. The local weather forecasters out of Boston, and the Weather Channel winter weather experts are all excited about this big nor'easter!!! We are forecasted to get 15 inches, and possibly as much as 30+ in some areas due to the "fluff" factor. ( The colder the temperature, the fluffier the snow, which therefore yields greater snow depths )

Flip....you tell him man !!!! These young guys all think they are indestructable until sometime into their 50's funny things start happening that they/we blamed on work we did the day before etc. Nay, nay, it is old man time ravaging our used and abused bodies of over a half centry!!!! THEN we begin to smell the roses and wake up!!

Luct, John & Fergie, this storm is going to "explode" off the New England coastline. With a very cold High Pressure to the north and plenty of Atlantic moisture to work with, we are in for a beaut!!!! The winds may approach hurricane force ( 74mph ) off the coastline which will cause coastal flooding at High Tide ( and we have a nearly full moon to add to the tide !!) Drifting will be severe, the snowplows will never keep up with the storm with fluffy snow and high winds.

JP, sorry to hear of your dilema....here's hoping things work out for you buddy !!

Turbo, one wife is quite enough, I don't know how the Mormons manage it, can you just imagine strollin past a jewelry store with your 5 wives??? Ohhh man, there would be no money for trains would there guys ??!!!!!

Bob, Ed, we might be buried up here for a while, so you might have to airlift those oranges to NE. I might hitch up the wolf to a dogsled and head over to the CSX tracks in the south part of town. It is great to stand on the overpass road and watch those big brutes sma***hrough the 15-20 inches of snow and send a blizzard of snow off in all directions!!

I brought a box of Krispie Kreme doughnuts, there on the far left table, Noah, don't pig out !!

Tim; I'm about 1500 miles south of Duluth in Parker County Texas. I was born and raised in Milwaukee. I guess that's were I get my liking for the northern iron roads. I've got a friend who used to be the director of the Canel Park Visitor Center.He lives over in Superior.

Brian; That's a start. Treat that Bachman stuff right and it should give you a lot of enjoyment.

Greg; The Santa Fe built those CF7s in Cleburn Texas, about 30 miles south of me. They used F7 frames, prime movers, electrical, trucks and even windows in the first batch. They added flat car side frames to them to replace the structural support of the old car bodies. They do look different but they worked well and are doing service on alot of short lines.

Mitch; Nice paint job on that RSD-15.

Spent some time this a.m. clearing a path to the woodshed and getting in a couple of wheelbarrow loads of logs. Ran the F40PH some this aft. Track had become dirty again, so I'm now running in the loco as a MOW track cleaning train. Amtrack F40, with Amtrack caboose (side vision) pushing the TCC ahead. Already it's running better. It was veerrryyy sssllloooowwww to start with.

Gotta go, as I've run out of afternoon, and Rosie-the-dog is complaining that she hasn't been fed.

Well guys, there_snoah stopping us here in the great white north!!! Up until yesterday it was the great brown north. 6" of white stuff was not enough to keep me from getting to Home Depot, and spending almost $200. I bought 6 sheets of masonite, 4 sheets of 1/2" foam, a sheet of 2" foam, a bunch of 2x2's, and lots of screws.

The 2x2's aren't for the layout exactly. I need to build sofits for the duct work in the center of the room. That project needs to be done before the benchwork can be finished. The masonite is for the backdrops, and fascia. The hard part is carrying all of the stuff in, because all of the junk in the way.

Brian, there's nothing wrong with that, everyone's got to start somewhere. When I was young and just starting out in Horribly Oversized, all I could get was the cheapest Athearn set on the market. The one with the little industrial engine "The Hustler" (remember those, guys?) that had rubber band drive!!

It's great to not have money concerns, and to be able to get whatever you want. But I suspect a great number of model railroaders have to budget their hobby purchases, and/or save up a long time to get stuff.

It matters more what you do with that set once you have it. How you set it up, how you gradually expand it, what you do to add scenery to make it come alive.

Be sure to let us know when you actually have it.

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,

Just a quick one to report on the day's happenings. I just got through reading all the back posts and I see that I'll be busy for a while (later on) answering or commenting on everything. But right now a nap is called for.

Wife and I just got back from playing 9 holes of golf. I hadn't played in about 6 months, but the shoudlers and back felt good enough that we decided to go out. Now our local course isn't exactly a country club, it has nine holes and is probably in the condition of a typical municipal course in the states. It does have a pool and a couple of tennis courts too. But the price is right, we pay about $45/month for dues, which covers all our green fees and use of the pool for the family.

Anyway, we got to the course just before noon. There was one car in the parking lot, but those people were finishing their round and leaving. We teed off and we were on #6 before we saw another player on the course, and they were back on #2. We don't have a tee time reservation system at the course, I guess you can see why.

It was a real nice day out, partly cloudy, temperature in the upper 70's, maybe low 80's, and a bit on the humid side. Nothing to complain about (except for my golf game!).

Anyway, the recliner is calling to me. Gotta run.

Had an awfull ride home the drivers wiper came off and I had to go out and fix it on the side of the highway[:0][B)][:0][:(!]It was just the nut that had loosened and at least a trucker had a metric wrench and helped me out. What's this "find it" stuff?? You're actually supposed to 'find' the ball after you hit it? I buy the used balls in the bowl in the pro-shop. They're cheaper that way, and anyway, I figure I'm only renting them from the pro for a few holes. They'll soon find a new home in one of the water hazards.

Goog evening all.

CFO and I have settled in for the night and waiting for the storm. I periodically look at the weather maps as they become available and it does look like this will be a good one with anywhere from 5 to 12 inches, strong notherly winds gusting to 55 kts and could be stronger. It should start hitting us in about 12 to 18 hrs. A low over Newfoundland appears to be stalling this could slow the storm some and increase the precip.

Hope every one is cozy, we have some nice 40's and 50's music on and relaxing.

Good evening all!! Boston Light just ran the two red flags up that have black dots in the middle......thats correct....HURRICANE WARNING flags!!! .[:O][:O] The governor has declared a state of emergency, and has activated the National Guard.
They want people OFF the roads, stay home, and let the emergency vehicles do their job!! Don't worry, I will ! That is why I'm in the coffee shop with friends !
Seas are expected to be at 20 to 30 foot waves, with at least a 3 foot storm surge above high tide ( and a full moon to boot !! )

The weather bureau has just said that this storm will go into the records as on of the top 10 worst storms to hit the area, drifts over 6 feet are expected. [:O]

Fergie, Luct and John, this is a bad one !! The storm is aimed directly at Nova Scotia after leaving the gulf of Maine. The temp here is 7F, we have had snow since 4pm, and we have 4 inches on the grond already. Visability is steadily getting worse, at about 1/4 mile now. The barometer is falling like a rock !!
John, I see that Fergie has brought in a cord of wood from the shed, hey, you guys may need it !!! I brought in extra wood tonight, and the woodburner is going full tilt, with a pot of coffee on it. I fired up the generator, and that is ready if needed, assuming I can reach the generator shed.

Flip, you are correct, they all start up at the circle and drop down through Canada before returning to Eastern Canada.

For you guys in Florida, Texas, etc. just imagine a hurricane with it's high winds, but instead of driving rain, you have driving snow so heavy that you literally cannot see a foot in front of you. The only thing that I experienced that was worse in my lifetime, was a sand storm at White Sands NM back in '60

I wish I had got to HD today to get the rest of the plasterboard that I need for the train room walls, darn!! Now I may not get there for several days at least while they dig out. But HD is a zoo around here on the weekends, so I try to go weekdays.

Many people at 4pm Mass tonight, I guess they know no one will make it tomorrow for services.

If you guys don't hear from me for a while, you will know that I have lost power/ cable. I will try to remember my morse code (KA1VEI) and send smoke signals Aah-ee Kimo Sabi.

We had some snow (a blizzard) in Toronto a few winters ago and Mayor Mel called in the Canadian army, we were teased and taunted for asking for some help. I hope Bostonians are treated to kinder folks in Mass for asking for the Nat Guard to assist them. It would be interesting to hear any stories you all have about being on a passenger train in a snow blizzard. Many a train from Halifax to Montreal or from New York to Montreal were snow bound and had to be rescued way back when. Once I was stuck in a car in a storm on the NY Thruway and taken to a hotel somewhere in the Pochonoes by state troppers. Went home to Montreal on the train, then back to NY on the train when we found out where our car had been towed. After that, I took the train from Windsor Station to Grand Central rather than drive. This was about 1969. AD. Right now, it's a little snowy out here in the TO and area.

Not to worry ***, from the maps I don't think we'll get more than a foot but the blowing effect will cause high drifts. I should mention I am not a professional weatherman but I am an oceangrapher and had to learn how to read these things. I'm positive it will be a "good" storm.

Fergie, I feel for those north of mid-Illinois today. Went out today, and found out the wind chill was bad enough (40 degrees, but wind chill dropped it to about 5 - 23 to 32 mph ‘breezes’). Our temp only dropped about 15 degrees since yesterday (but the wind is definitely up). Heard we had a wind advisory here today (kind of like "Don’t let dogs or small children outside without a tether") I hate to think what it’s like for you more northern Clubbers with driving sNoah on top of it.

Weather on now - says it’s 20 degrees (F - that's -7 C. for our northern friends) with winds down to ‘only’ 28mph. Our high temp for the day was around 9 a.m. this morning(!). [V] Forecaster says they’re having white-outs in the northern Midwest. That, and they said the Northeast may get a couple of feet of the white stuff.

Now that I've put a couple more logs in the stove, let me pull my chair closer. Need to warm my toes and fingers before I head back out again.

Got some more MRR mags at the library while I was out today. Almost tempts me to get a subscription again. But then again, I need to categorize the ones I have now (fair number of 1989-1992 or so, plus some other ones and RMC's). I find a lot of the MRR articles are good starting points for lots of little projects I can do (without going outside into the cold weather). This is the time of year for kitbashing, making little detail/trackside projects, etc. (for me, anyway)

Better put on my coat, hat, muffler and gloves. Time to head home before the worse weather gets here!

From the weather reports and from reading your posts I guess we better start praying that things (the weather) don't get as bad as some think it will. Here in Arkansas the sun was out today but the wind was strong and gusty. It is now about 645 pm and the temp is at 32. Our low is going to be about 22 to 24. I know if it is cold here it must be really cold up north. I feel for you all. Everyone take care and stay inside.

Well Lisa got home this afternoon after I had been out in -16c for about two ours. (lasted for about an hour in the t shirt before I put on a wooly pully[:-^])

Anyway she just about lost it after she realized that the dreadknots in my mustache and beard were actually icicles. Took a picture but it didn't turn out. Shucks.

Anyway we're in for it, so hold on tight!

Luct was at George's today and saw a CP 4-6-4. But it wasn't yours. George threw me out after a half hour when I started to talk about snow. Go figure.

Lately I've been thinking about starting over and switching from modeling the Q to modeling the Nickel Plate, but in the same era as what I would have built my CB&Q layout in. The reason I want to switch is that NKP steam is quite popular and available in plastic, and has a lot more interesting roster than the Q. Anyone think it's a good idea, especially when I barely have any CB&Q equipment so far?
