Good Afternoon All:

Tom:
Fergie doesn't know what color is going on the challenger as he hasn't seen what the graffiiti boys do down here on the Almost Nothing.

***:
I have almost the same camera as Ed but mine is only a 3.2 megipexel. I like the idea of the "dock". It stays plugged into the wall and the computer all the time so when ithe camera is sitting on the dock it is charging the batteries. All I have to do is push one button and the pictures are up-loaded to the computer and put into the proper file. Also like Ed, I bought a bigger memory chip so I could take more pictures. Now you realize that I'm a person that can go to Disney World, spend three days there, and still not take 24 pictures. As a matter of fact I took just eight and then wondered what I was going to do so I could take the film out and get it devoleped.

Brian:
Your Book is in the mail, I think I mailed them Tuesday.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

I took 110 the day I rode the Cumbres & Toltec, and about 150 the day we went on the Durango & Silverton.

Hey Teffy, did you get my email a couple of days ago?

QUOTE: Brian:
if you use a regular camera you can still get them put on CD... I do believe most developing centers have this option...

That is an option for those without digital cameras, but actually having a digital is so much more convenient. And with digital cameras, like most electronics, the price seems to be coming down all the time. You don't need 4 or 5 megs to post on the web, a camera with 1 meg would be more than sufficient.

Digital cameras allow to see your results immediately, and to delete those you don't care for. No waiting to fini***he roll, no going to the store to drop off or pick up the roll. No paying for shots you really don't want. The chance to immediately retake a shot that didn't come out just right.

Not that everyone needs one, but those who are thinking about it, but have some financial limitations, would do well to look at a lower end digital camera.

Regards

Ed

Good evening Ed, mind if I have a seat at your table? Gee , only two of us tonight! Thanks for the info on the Kodak, that is one of the cameras that the wife and I really liked. It is mid-priced, nice features, I like the docking action. My camera is a standard SLR 35MM Minolta.

Bob, yes, I do get CD with every roll I send in. So I can pop them into the CD drive on my computer, but I just haven't got around to doing that yet. We just got through 10 years of taking care of my dad who passed away from Diabetes two years ago, and 7 grandkids everyday, 5 of them 7x24 while their new homes were being built over the hill on the west 40. Now I am trying to play catch up with everything!!!

Well, the insulation is done in the train room, and half of the plasterboard is up. I need to make another HD run to get another 8 sheets, boy that stuff is a pain to handle!##@%$[:(!][:(!] I also discovered that I need to run a Cat5 cable to the room also, so that I can use the computer right in the train room. With another big storm due on Sunday, I think I had better make the HD run tomorrow.

The wife is ringing the dinner bell, so I am out of the coffee shop for a while, by Ed,

Hey ***, I have a Kodak digital too. Only 3.1 megapixels, though. It does just great for most of my shots, but when railfanning, the recycle time is a little slow. If a train is moving kind of fast, it is easy to miss some of the action. I also have a Minolta setup for film, but haven't touched it since I got the digital. I don't have to wait to finish a roll, I have a printer if I need prints, but that isn't very often. I can crop or correct the pictures using software.

I have posted this picture a number of times around the forums, but I suppose it won't hurt to put it up again since we are talking about cameras. Big Girl took this last summer. The problem was the recycle time. The front of the engine was lost by the time the camera fired. It turned out to be one of my favorite photos taken that day, even though it was not quite what we had in mind. The vertical streaks are raindrops.

Good evening guys, quiet in the coffee shop lately, too many people either shoveling or sick with colds I guess...

Bob and Elliot, thank you also for your replies on digital cameras. I have been trying to decide on whether or not to spend the big bucks and get the new Konica Minolta digital camera that would allow me to use all my maxxum 7000 lenses, or, go with a mid range for now, like the new Kodak docking camera that just came out at Christmas time. I am leaning towards the Kodak at this time because it will not break the bank, and will give me the opportunity to learn what digital cameras can and cannot do before/if I spring for the KM digital later.

Rob, I noticed that you also are thinking of purchasing a DC, have you decided on anything yet?

Ooohh ohhh, were out of coffee, I'll run to the store ....be back soon guys,

I used to be much more into photography than now. From the mid-80's through the mid-90's I shot thousands of shots. Almost all on slides because I liked the control over the exposure that I got. I have some half-way decent shots, if I do say so. And they were all done with a old, simple, fully manual Ricoh camera, and non-automatic zoom lenses. Where are all those slides now? In boxes or cassettes stored away. I can't remember the last time I dragged the projector out to look at them. Don't even ask about the thousands of prints.

With the digital camera, somebody asks to see the shots we took at Christmas, and it takes about 15 seconds to get them up on the screen.

I realize that I'm lazier and more disorganized than most of you, so all this won't neccessarily apply to your situation. But for me, I've seen the light and I won't be going back to film. I don't even carry that big bag of lenses around with me anymore.

Bob, according to my calculations, we should hit the 5000th post sometime on Sunday based upon an average of daily and weekend activity.

Ed:
I haven't gotten an e-mail for you in several weeks or maybe a month. I've been on the D & S probably 8 to 10 times and I have yet to take a picture, but I had forty ladies take all kinds of pictures. I did find out that if you go into the yard wearing a white hard hat, tie, and clip board they don't try to run you out. You'd be amazed what you can do, if you dress like someone in charge. I was in the BNSF yard in Lubbock for two days before someone challenged me. Now you have to know that I was driving a 45' motorcoach so it wasn't like I snuck in.

Vee haf our vays of knowing.

But if I told you, you'd probably scoop me on posting #5000. And I want that one because rumor has it that the prize is a week in a Motel 6 on the outskirts of Minneapolis, all the bratwurst you can eat, and an opportunity to spend a week constructing benchwork in Elliot's basement.

With all the COLD weather reports, I shall refrain from complaining about what we are having.

Dr.Phil here- Who remembers - Mustard Plasters? Great to relieve coughs and chest colds. Vicks Vapor Rub. Rub onto chest , small amount on upper lip under nostrils.Or
small dab into each nostril and just keep inhaling the vapors.

CFO offered to go with me to train show this saturday. Also now pay attention-
We win the lotto, now 14 mill., all adults with spouse, sorry, no children, all expenses
paid for Excursion Train trip. Includes to and from starting place. Which trip to be decided at later date. Her idea.

[#ditto] Ed, to all that stuff about cameras and slides. I have shots of all kinds of things, including the mothballed White Pass & Yukon from the early 80's.

I like your idea for the 5000th post prize, but who's brave enough to claim it in the middle of winter?[:0][:p][:D][;)][8D]

Hi all-
My big news is finally getting the paperwork that officially says I'm going to Fallon, NV this spring. So now I have the administrative "fun stuff" to line up for that, but I've got a couple months' down time to do it (I'll go work temporarily at a training school up here). I'll pay a visit in February to visit a realtor and go looking for a house.[^]

I read a few pages ago about having a computer built? I actually had that offer from someone I work with - sounds like a good deal, then?[%-)][?]

Somebody pass the coffee, please. (Black decaf thanks)

I've posted a little more than 100 times on MR forums but this is the first time I've been here. Seems like the proper place when I've got no particular question and don't particularly feel like answering other questions.

That leaves putting in my [2c] worth on some things that have been bugging me about these forums and their denizens:

1. Abolish polls! I really don't care how many people grew up beside the XYZ railroad and who anybody likes in an NFL playoff is so far off topic as to be unrecognizable.

2. There needs to be a "Next Topic" button at the top and bottom of each page. I know I can use the "Open in New Window" option on my browser but I shouldn't have to. I should be able to navigate quickly through the drivel (like I post) and get to what I want to read.

3. Spelling and grammar DO count! If you're not literate, please get help before wasting my time and failing eyesight trying to decipher what you're saying. Most of my posts are copied and pasted into Word for a quick check before I click on Post New Reply. Try it.

[soapbox]

There, that feels a lot better.

And now I do have a general sort of question. I notice that Ed Murphy has retired to Mexico [^] [^]. <--- that's the green of pure envy. Can't do that but I'm going to be in Cancun for a week in June. Any model railroading going on in or around Cancun? I don't mean to invite myself (I really hate people who do that) and my Spanish is limited to "Buenos Dias" and "gracias" when I think real hard, but if you are a modeler in Cancun, I think I know a guy who would love to give you the opportunity to show off your railroad.

And while I'm at it, I mentioned else where that I'm intrigued by On30 and thinking of expanding (from HO) into that area. Any words of wisdom? Pros and cons?

My cup's empty and my bed is calling. Talk to y'all later.

Chuck

PS: Surprisingly, Word accepted y'all. Must be a Southern spelling checker. [C):-)]

Hey, today we only picked up 6" of the white death. It's getting better all the time!
Tom- Thanks for the info on Supertrees, if they look better than the ads, I'll definitely be picking some up.
BB4005- Thats some good looking benchwork. I'll send you my private railcar so you can run down here and do mine. Never was a carpenter, never will be. I can turn 6'000 board feet of the finest grade lumber into sawdust as quick as anybody.
Got 3 of the 5 tanks I ordered from First Hobby today, only 1 1/2 days after I ordered it! The other two are on pre-order. Looks like a shop I'll be doing more business with.
Ed- I have boxes of prints, wish I had taken slides. Wish even more that I had used a 35MM as oposed to the 126 auto wind I used. I would have had some fantastic pics!
Oh well, live and learn. You make a good argument for digital.
Ferg- thought I'd get a nasty-gram from you on my last post, if you didn't read it, well no reason to start bad habits now. Onward and upward, no going back!
Seeees ya!

Yes, thanks for your concern. I got the thing thawed enough in the garage to be able to get the carburator off, into the mud room, cleand out, and re-installed. Fired up first time[^], so we are back in business. In fact this was a maintenance day at chez Wood. The van tailgate latch, the garage door latches, and all the door knobs in the house, starting with my MIL's bathroom. Is there a fastener theme here? Anyway, I'm feeling pretty chuffed. Even a power out this afternoon caused by trees down on the lines because of the storm was brief, and didn't prevent our enjoying an excellent seafood chowder at our friends. We walked, and the return trip was a bit unpleasant with the wind. The wood stove had stayed in, despite the time we spent away, so that was good to come home to.

Quiet in the coffee shop at 11:23, most of the easterners have gone to bed.

Ed, you are still up I'm sure, I too have 100 slide cassetts, full, at least 12 of them. I plan to scan them into the computer and burn some DVD's. Just haven't got to it. I can't even view them anymore on my slide projector, I can't find a replacement lamp anywhere.

Yaaghhnn, time for bed, 12 degrees out, another two dog night, see ya all in the AM,

Thanks Phil. Benchwork isn't really all that hard, especially since the drywall screw and the cordless screw gun came along. I just make open frames of a convenient size, and put cross members every 2 feet, never stopping to worry about the details. That stuff gets filled in as I go.

Keep in mind that I work in Overkill, and some of these newer engines can get up to 10 pounds. There are also a couple of places on the layout where I might actually have to climb up and walk, and I weigh 330 these days (down from 360).

There was a really good discussion about saws over on the layout building forum, here's the link.

http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28783

A good chop saw, a tape measure, the screw gun, and a pencil will get 80% of the job done. A table saw, a saber saw, and a couple of clamps also work wonders.

The truth is that I'm really a bit of a hack. I don't measure carefully, I just get things close. The place where I try to take the most care is on grades and vertical transitions. Beside, benchwork doesn't need to be pretty, you cover it all up anyway.[swg]

Good Morning All:

It's going to get cold this weekend, their saying 26F, but I realy doubt that. If my employees lied as much as the weather man - I'd fire them.

Chuck:
Their is less misspelling and better grammer in here then on the rest of the forum. Almost no flamming as the flammers don't want to read 245 pages to find out what to flame about. We also don't have a lot of turnover in participants. Most of us have been in here for a while. When someone decideds to come in if they stay for a couple of weeks we've got them for awhile as we get more personal and care about each other a little more then the other posts

Lawrence:
Look at how much HO you could put in that space and not be wasted on
Overkill.

Flip:
WHAT'S WRONG WITH A LITERATE TEXAN??? I only use my TEXAS DRAW when I'm out of state as that's what is expected. How is Deb doing?

Tim:
Seriously - the best way to do a track plan is to go to the LHS and buy some switches, flex track, and some kraft paper. Put the paper on the table and have fun pushing the switches around and see what works. It does lead to a lot of pulling track up, but when your done it looks and runs good. After you've done this a couple of times you don't need the paper. I've tried the doodle sheet and found out the the switches don't fit like the pattern and the buildings are almost always wrong. I found out that by using small buildings like Alpine models instead of the hughmongus Walthers I can get more indusrty in the same space.

Well I've got to go to work.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

G= Gigantic(at least I think, I made this one up myself)

So, is this right?

Well, I’m in early today (but not for long) enjoying my day off. I made some more cinnamon rolls, someone (Jim) forgot to put them in when they got in late-I mean, early last night. [V][;)]

We’re due in for the SNOW today into tomorrow, some channels talk about as much as 12 inches 50 miles south of us, and I bet we’ll get at least 5-8 up here. I had a good night again last night, the train came into town about 8:15, and he left close to ten o’clock.

I guess I better get a move on though, the layout needs attending too and I’ve got a building to work on yet, so I’ll see you all, and maybe stop in later yet.

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Gorgeous morning here in Mexico. Sunshine, [8D] cool temperatures. It’ll warm up later, but I’m enjoying the morning. Got some good fresh coffee in the cup, just downed a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Got to take the dogs to the vet, but after that I’m free for my morning nap. Life is good. [^]

We went out to the orange grove yesterday and filled the Blazer with liquid sunshine. I'll be sure to have the FCVN ship another load of OJ and oranges up north for you guys.

Who remembers - Mustard Plasters? Great to relieve coughs and chest colds. Vicks Vapor Rub. Rub onto chest , small amount on upper lip under nostrils.Or
small dab into each nostril and just keep inhaling the vapors.

My Mom definitely believed in the Vicks. Yup, on the chest and just a bit in the nostril (I hated that part). Once I even got the steam vapor treatment. Bowl of scalding hot water, spoonful of Vicks Vapor Rub in the water, head over the bowl, towel draped over the head to keep in all those fumes. Now just breath normally!

Yup, that pretty well describes The Coffee Shop. Welcome, have some good hot coffee and some fresh orange juice!

Well now, we certainly recognize that there are all kinds of different points of view among the people on the forums, and I don’t think anyone here will complain about you expressing yours. But I’m not sure you’ll find many followers amongst the old codgers (and youngsters) hanging around with their feet propped on that old stove in the middle of the Coffee Shop. No one here gets too worked up when someone posts with less than perfect grammar or spelling. We’re just kind of laid back. I don’t think there’s much, but by sheer coincidence I do have a contact for a guy who is into trains and lives and works in Cancun. He even has his own website, www.trenecitos.net. His name is Carlos Alberto Thompson. You can probably email him at cthompson@dolphindiscovery.com.mx. He’s the System Administrator for all those “Swim with the Dolphin” places. Speaks good English. You can tell him I sent you. We met at a train convention down here last year, and me and the wife sat next to him and his wife on the convention excursion trainride.

Quiet in the coffee shop at 11:23, most of the easterners have gone to bed. Ed, you are still up I'm sure…
But you’d be wrong!! For an old guy who does nothing but lay around and nap all day, I still generally go to bed around 9:00 p.m. Sometimes we read a bit before turning out the lights, but if there isn’t Monday Night Football on tv, it’d be unusual to see me awake after 9:30.

Teffy, I tried emailing you again last night, this time through the forum. Any sign of a mesasage?

Okay, gotta run. I need to hurry and get those dogs to the vet and back so I can take a nap.

Hasta luego,

I learned a new life skill today! I learned how to use a defibrilator, easier then DCC. I wonder if you can run trains with one? I'll get back to you on that

Okay y'all, I'm back[}:)]

I've been reading enough to keep up, but haven't had time to post lately. I got lights finally put in my Atlas Dash-8. It looks good now, even better since I burned up the original decoder [xx(] and had to install a six function Digitrax in it. Now I can have alternating ditch lights and rule 17 heads and tails.

Ed: Red Sox? Who'd wear red sox? Black sox are better, they don't get dirty!!

Noah: Snoah huh?

Fergie: I'm bettin a defib machine would burn up a decoder as quick as a nick in insulation, and as I discovered, that's pretty fast.

Teffy: Cold here too, Gary England, the world's number one meteorologist says it'll be down to about 15F tonight.

If I've missed any new guys[#welcome]

Better go, the end is near (The end of the hour that is)

Good afternoon folks: A sunny day-after-the-storm. The trees and buildings are covered, because the snow was dampish. Looks pretty. There was ANOTHER power out while we were having lunch at a restuarant in the Harbour. Lasted until mid-afternoon. ANOTHER tree down on the line. Looks like we are in for ANOTHER storm on Sunday. The grader totally filled the end of the driveway at about 2:00 a.m. Never mind, the SB took care of it (once it had decided to start after being warmed - it must have caught some bad habits from Bob's SB picture and gone all soft and subtropical on us- some kind of twilight zone sympathetic magic going down here.....[}:)][alien][:D]) Met the HRM Library delivery chap, Fergie and Luc. He said the drive up the shore was really good compared to Dartmouth and Halifax. He said the radio had reported folks in Cole Harbour taking up to 2 hours for the normal 15 minute drive to the bridge! Yesterday's traffic had packed the snow to ice before it could be cleared, or something like that. How did you find it?

Great list! How about Zimpossible for the Z, andGinormous for the G [:D]

As did mine! Sure brought back some memories, but I liked the smell. Seems the owners of our present home used quite a bit. We keep digging up old blue bottles in the yard. They make handy candle holders, but don't let the candle burn down to the glass, or it may split off. Not as bad as a Marmite jar, that my Dad used to hold a firecraker one November 5th. Shattered like a bomb, and only by the Grace of God did we escape serious injury!

What I'd like to see is the list of who is in the topic (or in the shop in our case here) repeated at the top of the topic, so we'd know right away who's in.

It's nearly time to get ready for dinner, but after lunch I'm not that hungry.[dinner] Maybe I'll get a chance to run the new-to-me F40PH this evening. If the power stays on, that is!
