Our lake is high too......and we're supposed to get more rain later on.  Oh well, it makes digging in the garden easy, right?

EDIT: Alright you chow hounds.....LINE UP!

I'm whippin' up some hot wings, so get your plates out!

Good afternoon, I'll take a plate of those wings...with a bucket of Coke to wash 'em down...please and thankyou.

I don't recall who said it, but someone in here said there are people suggesting the California fires should be allowed to burn??? Something about the fires not having a "carbon footprint" vs. the "carbon footprint" it would require to extinguish them??? Would those be the same "enlightened" people that have done all they could to prohibit proscribed burns? and taking out dead trees/brush? Activities that may have helped to limit this "fire event?" Disapprove

Silly me, I thought carbon was a key component of smoke/soot... I thought smoke so thick it blots out the sun, and shows up on satelite images...was supposed to be a "bad thing."

Apparently, I'm not "enlightened."

Shake and bake in the land of the nuts and flakes... Apologies if warrented to our Californian friends.

In other news and views, the weekly "face time" with THAT editor went well...as usual. I picked up a couple easy assignments, and a wild time for next Friday. The Solon high school is hosting a mock drunk driving accident complete with ER and funeral scenes. At practically the same time, the middle school is doing "Pioneer Days," and I get to run all over the greater metropolitan Solon area to cover both.

With the newspaper world being a little "slow" the past few days, I got a little modeling in. Taking a cue from JEFF, the king of re-working things, I took a dead lighter, resembling an oil drum, and am in the process of converting it into a fuel tank that used to sit in the ex-Rock Island yard in Cedar Rapids.

Might post pics later, IF it turns out worth a crap.

Speaking of "crap," I would NOT put a litter box in the layout room. A) I hate cats anyway, B) the Wife's cat creates a stink unlike anything I've experienced...and that's after over a decade in EMS!!!, and C) you wouldn't let a dog do his "chores" in there, I presume YOU wouldn't do your "chores" there...why let a cat? Nope, I'd stand firm on a litter box embargo.

My opinions...your's may vary.

MMMMMMMMMMM. Good wings, by the way...

HOT WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dinner

Well I went to do some train hunting, and was on my way home.  UNTIL, I saw the train the guys let me get some shots from.   I got 35 pictures Mischief .  Mainly hoppers, but this train had a caboose.  Why I don't know.   I will post some shots I got.  I know they are pretty rusty, but I like them like that!!!  Also, I know some people don't like graffiti, but the caboose has some.  I thought some might like to see a caboose still in work.

ROBBY P: Yer killing me pal! The first hopper was from my beloved CNW... sad to see what's become of it. I'll concede though, it does have some neat rust patterns on it. The caboose is pretty cool too...especially with the old C&O logo ghosting through. Now THAT's a technique I'd like to learn/master. Any ideas Mr. Weathering Guru??

ChrisEight Ball if it was me, I would fade the car the same.  Kinda leave the logo still some-what visible.

I did a dark blue hopper for a guy last year, and he wanted repatched to CNA.  BUT he wanted the CNW logo still visible.  I just faded the car, and didn't fade near the logo as much as the rest of the car.

Robby,

Those are some nice shots. Probably a work train of some sort? They still use crummies for crew and tool transport when they're redoing patches of ballast, etc. See three or four cabeese down on a siding below the Tappan Zee bridge often but no way to get a shot without risking arrest.  Went to the scrap yard today and got a completely intact high pressure power steering line for my car. Only cost $15. Here's the downer. It's gonna cost about $170 to have it installed.

Good evening---I got in from an interesting sight. In our end of town we got dumped on for a bit. North of us is getting clobbered with thunderstorms and to the south of us---only a few blocks away---bright sunshine and blue skies---with the nasty border of black to their North.

Now, I've a question for you car buffs out there. I'm going to start looking for a new vehicle. One that we can do a lot of farm/back road---yard saleing and RRF'ing---if that is the term used--. The Audi I have is getting to be a bit long in the tooth and I'm starting to see the ever popular holes in the trunk kind of thing going on-----any suggestions out there?----Oh yes---when we go doing the yardsale thing we come home with some GOOD stuff!!!!---hence----MischiefSmile,Wink, & GrinWhistling

Robert's Repair Service. They're the cheapiest around here. Reason it costs so much is because they have to lift the engine. A cast iron 60° V6 with steel alloy heads ain't no lightweight.

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a double chocolate brownie with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream on top, please 'n' thank you!

Today at work was... interesting - in the morning, there were two moving vans parked outside the front, to get the desks and stuff for some of our billing and other admin. types' offices (which are being moved to another building the agency bought not long ago). It was raining, of course, and I saw that they'd put some wide plastic covering over the top of a couple of the desks before they were wheeling them out the door. Then later in the morning we had blinking power (which releases the magnets holding the doors open in about all the offices, so those all closed until we re-opened them), then a severe thunderstorm warning (tornado was a few towns south of us, so we missed that, and I think there may've been a couple 50 miles north of us passing to the east). So everybody goes to the downstairs conference room where there aren't any windows, on the inside of the building, until we're sure the storm has passed by us. Finally cleared up sometime around 2 p.m. and got sunny and up into the mid-70's (F). Hope the storm missed everyone to the east (and especially the southeastern U.S.). From looking at the radar tracks on the TV tonight, it looked like this is one nasty storm system(!) Shock

LAST comment for a long while on the office thing (heck, seems like I've said too much already): I've decided that at work, I don't need/want to share my feelings. Safer that way, too. Moving right along...

NittanyLion, you might want to try the white Squadron putty (I think that's the one I used - I'll check tonight and post or PM you tomorrow morning to be sure) for filling in. I do recall that I just figured on needing to sand the puttied area after it dried, though. So figure on that being part of the process. You can also put vegetation, vines, small trees in front of the worst spots - the ol' camouflage technique! Thumbs Up Oh, if I made a diorama, I'd be trying to figure where to connect it up to the rest of my layout after I had it done...Wink

Corey, no need to apologize for talking about those bridges - as others said, that will look great once you get it done (heck, it looks great now!).Bow Following a prototype is much harder (in some ways) than freelancing/winging it (as I and a few others tend to do) Wink

PC, not a problem on the party - heck, we haven't tested the chandeliers since the last move, so we need to make sure they're still nice and sturdy by having a party, right? Whistling Besides, we may need someone to (as I heard one prayer say it): "Bless this MESS" (TM - Sorry, Fergie...) So, that cosmogony thing is like "How'd I get here, Daddy?" Smile,Wink, & Grin  (Very small theological joke there...)

Robby, on your partial boxcar, just put a little foundation under it, and make it the yard supplies 'office'! Thumbs Up Kinda like one of the old MDC/Roundhouse 3-in-1 kits used to do. Hey, that was neat about the (BN)Santa Fe recruiting railfans for security. Yeah!!Thumbs Up Hey, those cars are just like you like 'em - nice and rusty! Big Smile

Galaxy, good to hear that your van w**k cost less than expected. Yeah!! My doctor told me on my (borderline) cholesterol, that exercise will help a bunch too, so if that's an option for you, it could help you both with dropping the weight he wants you to, plus helping your cholesterol (especially the 'good' kind - LDL? or is that the HDL?). Anyway, it helps.

Jeff - NICE job on the SD24! Of course, I'm partial to Western RR's, too.. Hey, good thing you found your steering part for only $15 - can you imagine if you'd had to get it new? Shock

Sawyer - and, how much education you finish can help with making the MRR/LHS money, often. (The more the merrier?) Get your edgercaytion now while you're young (and can remember it better than some of us who've been around the block once too many times...Wink)

Rob, that sounds like a definitely good price on the barn boots. Now, can I get some new penny loafers from your shoe guy there? My current ones wear down too quickly and are hurting my feet. On your wife's "Sherman's Crossing", will it need to be weathered 'crispy-fried black and brown'? Smile,Wink, & Grin

I was able to lose a few pounds over the past week (maybe 4 or 5, I think), but need to get going on the exercise thing I mentioned to you, Galaxy. Repeat after me - "Veggies are my friends..."

BridgeTom - so, does that mean that you're a 'good' example, or a threatened punishment (like "Just wait until your Daddy gets home!")? Laugh Sorry to see how the weather out there on the 'Left Coast' has been this past week - have they ever considered putting spray spigots up near the top of the mountains, and pumping some of that water up there instead of down south?

Morgan - Amen on your comment about the real world vs. models. Thumbs Up

Garry - what'd you decide to do on your backdrops, by the way? I second your offer to send California our excess water - I'm getting tired of one day of the sun, followed by 2 to 7 days of rain.Thumbs Down Beginning to wash out some gardens around here, I'll bet.

Dick, good idea to start the grandson out early. Hmm, come to think of it, there's a local 'tourist' RR (St. Louis & Iron Mountain RR) in our adjoining city of Jackson, MO... Maybe I can see if I can talk SIL and daughter into all of us going there this summer at least once.Smile

JR, just as well to stay out of the hoosegow for now. There'll be other railfanning opportunities...Shock

I think I'll grab the seat with my back to the back wall. Easier to see the pies a'coming...

Caught up for now - and about time to finish my dessert and head for home. I'll check back in the morning and see how Janie and Flo are doing on the cleanup by that point in the morning.

Prayers for those in the way of this storm (and those out West, who could really use that water more). AngelAngel

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Exactly!  At least from a Biblical standpoint.

Actually, it's more broad in scope as it attempts to take all theories into account and weigh them against the evidence.  It's actually quite facinating.  I may major in that as I move toward a doctorate.

Evenin all, oooo those wings look good! Best not have any tonight though. Obvious reasons. SighNot much happened today kinda slow and easy. Rained this morning and cleared off this afternoon. Yard time tomorrow. Clean up from Thursdays storm. No damage just a mess. Stopped in to the other LHS while I was in Springfield today. They carry Bachmann and I saw the 4-4-0 American. Not sure I liked it in person. For some reason it looked too toy like in real life. Might just have been that one but.... I think I'll keep looking for the right loco for the tourist train. Great to see a caboose. No matter the reason, it still is on the tracks. Just like the MKT hopper that has shown up again and is in the middle of a string of other hoppers to go out. Proves again Not much is un-prototypical. Hmmm, maybe in my world the caboose will still be a great thing to have. Gotta think about that . I likes caboosies

Jim- Not discussing w**k from w**k for a while miiiiight be a good idea. Glad to hear you dodged the storm.

Galaxy- Glad to here you got off cheaper.

I don't need proof on this cosmotology stuff I KNOW where everything came from. I'll be sure to put in a mention for ya'll when I talk to him tonight.

Now Barry quit makin this stuff up. You're just trying to divert attention from the ONE and ONLY culprit. Now if....what? Oh that. Heh heh. That's, um, a, uh....well, um, ahem, (gulp). I know it looks like a catapult trigger but it's ..... uh, Hey, where did that come from? I uh, best be getting on.Whistling

Goodnight.

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

***Jeffrey, ouch! Almost as much trouble as getting to a timing belt, eh?

***Robby, excellent pics! With reference like those, it's no wonder your weathering is so realistic.

***Jim, with all the rediculous "weight loss" garbage being peddled out there, one of the best weight loss porducts available IS "Veggies". Cut out all products containing refined sugars 6 days per week (hey, nobody wants to give up that addictive, energy zapping stuff forever, so 1 cheat day is acceptable), and follow a good exercise program (I strongly recommend the Bill Phillips: Body For Life program) and you will lose fat and gain muscle while doing so. With age and illness of course comes modifying such routines, but eating right is a huge part of maintaining what health you've got.

Never made it into the train room today. Maybe tomorrow.

Have a good night all.

Good Evening Everyone,

Well it is still evening here for another half hour and then it will be Saturday. I had a post written a couple of days ago and all of a sudden, "poof" , it was gone just about the time I was going to hit ' post '. It was too late and I was too annoyed to re-type but I finally made it in here. Hope Chloe won't kick me out as it is getting late and I can see she is yawning at the counter. Cup of coffee for Chloe please.

Weather here is terrible. It went up to 40F here today with a strong NW wind. Tomorrow isn't supposed to be much better. Hope it is warmer where you are which I guess goes without saying for Jeff.

Seems this is the car repair season. Glad to here yours wasn't too bad Galaxy but new tires and brakes can take quite a bite out of the RR budget.

Rob, you would have to mention a timing belt. I need to replace mine this summer and found out it will cost about $400 which I didn't think was too bad. I have a Volvo S70 and some parts can be expensive as I'm sure Barry can relate to with his Audi. Mind you the car is 9 years old so I have to expect some repairs as stuff just wears. I plan on driving it until it drops which hopefully will be a long time from now. A friend of mine has a '91 Volvo that is still going strong so I have my fingers crossed.

J.R. Good to hear from you and glad to hear your foot is coming along as well as your house re-construction.

P.C. Congrats on the degree. I really admire you doing it all at night while working a full time job. I took mine all in one go many years ago and can't imagine doing that and working too. Besides it would have taken about 8 years to get it all in and I wasn't a very patient person when I was young.

Corey, When you are finished with your bridges I bet the caption on the photos will read " Is it real or is it a model?"

Well it is time for me to say Bon Soir mes amis, si Bon Soir c'est ca.

Good Morning, Ham and eggs please. Coffee too thank you. Suppose to ghet to about 68 deg here so good day to be outside. Still a bit dewy to do much yet and a little early yet to make much noise. I might stop in the trainroom for a bit to let the neighbors get up and going.

Have a Great Day!

Good Morning---

Sheesh did we end up with a night of t'undering boomers. I shut the 'pooter down just in time to see all kinds of lightning and what all else going on---it rained so hard at times last night we couldn't even see across the street. Not a fun night-----lotsa wind as well and even had some hail. A string of them ended up going through---4 to be exact. Managed to get to sleep around 2am---that to a chorus of departing booms and such. Today we'll just have showers and, of course, the ever popular chance a t'underboomer may show up. Our high today will be 17C and 11C is for tomorrow------WhistlingSmile,Wink, & Grin

Gonna attempt to get some MR stuff done today as the ground is a little too wet to do much else---Whistling---there was no honey do list kicked up just yet------ahem---cough coughWhistling

Good morning folks.

Thanks again for the encouragement on the trestle.  My wife thinks I've taken too long on it.  I told her it  took a lot of thought to get the right proportions.  She must have agreed, she gave me a blank stare!Wink

My father in law stopped by unannounced last night. He had gone to his childhood home and retrieved his Lionel train set. Our house is on the way. He said he had it when he was five to ten years old. He's sixty five years old now, so it's quite old. I don't think he has much of an attachment to them. He was wondering what I thought they were worth. I told him probably not much. All of the old track is corroded, the engines and cars themselves look to need some work. I don't know if they'll even work. He seemed a little let down. I think he wants to get rid of it. To be honest with you, I think I may be the recipient at some point. I think it would be cool to fix them as best I could and run it around one of my Christmas trees. We'll see.

I've certainly had fun working on my trains this week. The trestle has consumed my time and the layout. I had stuff EVERYWHERE! While my Father in law sat and chatted with my wife, I cleaned and sorted the layout. It was quite productive. I cleaned enough off to run a few trains back and forth. Well, that's it, I have to install the trestle this week so I can run trains while I work!

I hope you all have a great day. I'm off to work.

 Good morning.

It's 72 and partly cloudy. The high today will be pushing the mercury into the high 80's. It will be partly cloudy.

Changed out the couplers on the two new Atlas locos yesterday. The Accu-mates were consigned to the scrap heap as they were exchanged for Kadee 148 Whisker couplers. I went to the local scrap yard and got the part I need for my car. Looks like I'll have to wait until the end of the month to have it installed. That's gonna be $$! Looks like rain is coming tomorrow so I'll be mowing the parents yard today. That should take up 2 to 3 hours and it'll add another $20 to the MR fund. I had a derailment on the inside loop last night that wiped out several sections of fence along the east side of the Shell station property. There won't be much to putting it back up. It's the cheap snap together Bachmann stuff.

Mornin' everyone!

Just popin' in for a quick cup of dark roast.

Got way to many things to get done today.  Most in preparation  for a meeting at 1PM today on the program for the Scholarship dinner in a week and a half.  Hopefully I may actually get some time in the trainroom later.

Gotta go!  Catch you all later.

Good Morning, Janie - I'll have the pecan waffles, with maple syrup and couple of pats of butter, glass of Ed's OJ (the tanker run came in? Great! We were getting low, I know), glass of milk and a cup of coffee in a D&RGW mug, please. Thanks!

Looks like a handful of the usual early-risers here this morning - oh Hi, Bye, Ray! - Todd, Jeff, Jerry, Barry, Lee, and it looks like a couple more pulling up outside. Guess I'd better grab a seat in the corner booth before the place gets all filled up.

Jeff, I like what you've done with that UP diesel - it looks sharp! Thumbs Up I'm guessing it may be a bit before your ditches get drained down, with this last batch of rain through the areas to the south of Cape G. (and it looked like you were probably getting at least the edge of that nasty front). Heck, even Barry was getting some of those t-boomers!

Jerry, what've you got in store to do today, while Sallie's gone to the store? Or did you send a 'shopping list' of your own with her...?Smile

Just finished up laundry and I'm thinking I may go to the LHS (down the road a little) and see what he has - I could stand to pick up some more Kadees for some cars, and maybe another delayed uncoupler. I want to get all the other stuff moved off the layout so I can put the uncouplers in place (pull track up, bury uncouplers, re-install track, repeat...). Then finish clearing the workbench (aka DR table), and maybe w**k some on my DPM background warehouse, putting reinforcing styrene behind the sections and glue it all together. We'll see.

H-L has a (30?) percent off coupon on Krylon sprays, so I may see about what other colors I could use for weathering some cars - dust, rust, other kinds of colors.

Ah, here comes breakfast, so I'll dig in now. Dinner Hope your weekend goes well (and the honey-do lists are short - or don't get written?).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning........

I'll have a Tim Horton's French vanilla capacino along with two Tim Horton's old fashioned donuts with sugar topping. I had that in Detroit last month, and it was so good.

If you are interested, I just now posted a picture showing some repaired backdrop. The section of the layout has my Mrs. Hippy River bridge.

JimCG..... I like it when Hobby Lobby has sales on model train stuff because it's a good time to stock up on Woodland Scenics. However, 30% on anything would do fine.

Jeff ... the new UP units are looking great.

Happy Model Railroading.

I'll have what Garry is having as well please-----we have 5 of those places around us!! All within walking distance no less----Smile,Wink, & Grin

I'm going to undo some track near the extension so that I can place the yard just a couple of feet down from said extension---that way I can actually build in a potash processing mill and terminus. Right now we got 80kmh winds blowing things around agaiin---and they're still calling for more of those t'undering boomers------as well as passing showers---one went by---left a few sprinkles. Saw down the road a piece---way heavier-----gonna be one of those daysWhistling

Coffee in a large UNION PACIFIC mug and please leave the pot on the table, thanks.

***Corey, I hope you end up with that old Lionel train set. Do you know which version it was? A Hudson with work cars or what? Just curious.

Looks like a 60% chance of thunderstorms here today thru tonight and some may be severe. YeeHaw!

Hope everyone is having a great day.
