TomW---I had an interesting conversation with a neighbour who came from Mexico told me all cinco de mayo is currently is an excuse to "Party Hearty". All that other stuff is "dead guy stuff---"Sigh

Jeff--Getting really interesting motive power there---Smile,Wink, & Grin

Chloe--I'll have a coffee and toast with jam please---I'll go the corner booth and see who else shows up---

Good Morning All,

Just a regular to go please - late start after a late night last night (museum and the other diner after) and it's already starting in the shop.

Vincent - sorry to hear about your dog. Keep us posted and we'll keep you in our prayers.

Jim - That's a tough deal. I've never been politically correct either and had my lumps for it as well. Hope it blows over and they just see the good work you do as more important.

Gotta run - lots to do, I'll review last nights' posts later  - looks like some interesting pics there.   J.R.

Hi guys!

Boy, this diner is getting real popular! GO away for  a day and several pages added! They like to cut it off after about 75 pages and we are already at 25! It's great, but we may have to add on to the diner!

I only skim-read all there was there, so I'm sorry to anyone I should have commented back to, and don't here.

Thanks for all the concerns expressed over my carpal tunnel issues. I hope to find out thursday I hope what the next step I take is. The interesting thing is since he did the electrical tests on my arms, my right hand actually feels better I think. Then again, there are times it feels worse than others, so it could just be a better feeling spell.

The van is in the shop (again). The a/c heat blower motor went and now there is a shimmy when braking on the drivers side. I hope it's just a tire balance problem. As much as I have put into it recently I coulda bought something newer. Just never had the money all at once to do it and I HATE car payments. Hard to do payments on a disability monthly check. If it costs too much more, I may just look into a newer one. But for now, pop-pop (me to the cats) luvs his caravan! I keep telling it that, but it keeps testing me!

UGH!! DOUBLE UGH!! The lilacs here are starting to bloom! Allergies galore. We can't open the windows for cool air due to the durned lilacs. We have to use the a/c to keep the lilacs out of the house!

I hope Jeffrey is feeling mighty good, and his feets are doing ok. Did you get your steering fixed on your car?

Robby P. Did you get the cab ride on the switching duties yet?

Corey thems thar some mighty fine looking bridges ya got thar! Looks just like the real things! I have a tiny HO layout and have two bridges on it, but they don't belong there, and when I modify (IF I do) the layout I will have to scrap them.

Somebody asked for a prayer candle, and the prayer candle will be lit for those in need. Our friend is going in for rotator cuf surgery tomorrow.

Another friend stopped by yesterday and boy did we have some fun! We "played" trains, once I found a way to and found the layout. He has a big rambling victorian house he wants to get into trains as well, if he can get it past the CFO of his family. He has space. With gonna be two in college, he's thinking not a large budget. It's kinda all new to him, so he's a clean slate and sponge. Like me, Not too electrically inclined so I have suggested the lesser electrical work and DCC. Of course I'm prejudiced as I happen to think DCC is great- at least for my small layout. He wants to go with me to the wholesaletrains.com store the next time I go. It doesn't help that I have zero $$ right now for train stuff. And boy, I'm sure I could spend his $$$ alright...LOL.

Well, that's about it for now I guess.....

Keep up good work guys and have a smashingly great day ok!

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Goooooooooood morning.  Another cool morning, and kinda overcast.

Yesterday I did some switching, and installed some lights.  Probably work on that some more today (lights).

Jim I am with everybody else.  Hope it blows over.  Its like....The hard/honest...workers/people get it the roughest.   Maybe you can take a few days off?  If my wife is having a rough day or so, I try to get her to take a day off.  Kinda lets the storm blow over.

Vincent I had to put a dog to sleep several years ago.  It was VERY hard to do.  Gave him a steak dinner, and alittle while later on to the vets.  I brought him back home to the grave I dug.  Thats someting I won't forget, and its been several years now.

Jeff how many engines is that for you now?  Also do you keep theones your not using in a case or something?

Galaxy not yet.  Its been raining (flooding), and I just haven't made it down to try to meet them.

Well I have to go to the bank and Wal Mart.  We tried the Casino again last night and won $75.  We took $60, and added the $75.  So.......$135 isn't to bad.   At least we got our money and some.

Everybody have a good day, and I will stop in for lunch.

The ones I'm not using are kept right here in a wall mounted case I made from some scrap cedar.

Good morning folks.

I've been working on my trestle like there's no tomorrow.  This is my absolute favorite part of building a layout.  At least, it was on my first one!  That was a 4x8 that had little to no thought put into it.  This one actually has a prototype, so it makes it easier and harder at the same time.  I just have to mimic what I see instead on making it up on the fly.  I wonder if God had this much fun on the day he made vegetation?Big Smile

Thanks for the compliments on the bridges.  I know I'm just fishing for compliments by posting them on here, but I really do want the negative as well.  Does anyone see anything that is completely wrong with the images?  I'm not too sure how to go about planting the trees.   In the prototype, the trees darn near cloak the train until just before it crosses the trestle.  My hillside is a little too steep to plant trees, but I had to do that in order to fit this in a two foot depth.  I think I may end up using more of the smaller armatures from Scenic Express for the steepest parts.   We'll see, I'm probably over thinking this.

Jim, I was told a long time ago that my mouth would get me in trouble some day.  It has come true on many occasions.  Fortunately, I have an understanding boss that realizes that I'm right a good portion of the time.  I just get a a little punchy if I don't get my way.  I hope things go well for you.  They are probably looking for a reason to let somebody go.  Don't give them any more reasons!

I have a terrible short term memory, so I'm sorry for not commenting on more of the posts.  I don't know how some of you do it.

I have a short day at work, so I may get more modeling done tonight. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning.

It's 73 and sunny. The high will be in the upper 80's and there's a chance of thunderstorms.

Yesterday was relatively uneventful. I tore down, inspected and reassembled both the SD24 and the U30C and applied the end handrails to each unit. The SD24 was a snap except that the endrails didn't want to stay attached. A little super glue took care of that. The U30C was a horse of a different color. The endrails supplied with were for U33C, identical to those needed but having larger tabs. This required that the holes be drilled out. I don't have a pin vise so I had to use the Dremel on low speed to do the job. After that was done and a little super glue gel added the endrails were mounted into place. I really don't like the hand rails that are being made now. What ever happened to the nearly unbreakable ones Atlas used to have. These things they have now bend and stretch all over and sit every way but the way they're supposed to and forget about straightening one after it gets bent. It just goes right back to the bent position.

Mornin folks, Waffles and coffee please, Thank you.

Worked a bit on the Supply House, soon to be either the slaughter house or food related thing. Not quite sure yet. Suppose to rain this afternoon so I might try to mow this morning after the rest of the world gets up. Then hopefully finish the walls at the church.

Vincent- I'm sorry to hear about your little buddy. I have an extremely soft spot when it comes to dogs. Hearing your news got me a bit choked up, and after seeing his picture a tear was brought up. It sounds silly I know, but at times like this I think of my little baby also. Especially since she is a Lab also. Like I said there is something about dogs.. I know you are doing the right thing by not letting him suffer. It is the best for him. You both are in my thoughts and prayers.Angel

Corey- Be gentle? Be gentle on what? I think it looks great. You've already mentioned what I see. As far as the trees go, I wouldn't knock myself out making it exactly proto. I mean like you said 2 feet. A fair representation is all you can do and By Dingys' That's exactly what you've got going.Thumbs Up

Jim- AngelYou are in my prayers also. The comfort you need and the answers you want, will come too you soon I am sure. I don't know you well, other than here, but based on reading your conversations and hearing what other people say, you are a kind, intelligent, hard working, God fearing man. Nothing in there to be ashamed of and everything to hold your head up for. Everyone has a threshold. I find it hard to believe that a business could not forgive a moment for an employee like you. I do understand however, all too well the kinds of "supervisors" out there and their "bruised ego" situations. Remember, you have a choice to make first thing in the morning when you wake up. That is what kind of day I choose to have. Always say "I choose to have a good day". You'd be surprised at how much better the good things seem and what a bite out of the not so good stuff it takes. At least if things don't go as well as you'd like, you are not predisposed to making it worse with the attitude that it‘s going to be a bad day. That seems to make nothing go right. Life's too short to not have good days even when it's raining. "Try it. You‘ll like it". (oh, wasn't that an old advertising slogan for something years ago? This will haunt me for a while)

Tom (bridge)- Yeah that 5th of May thing goes on here too. I also knew what it was to an extent. I knew it was the day they got rid of the French, but not the details. And I knew (removed the word "that" from this point) it didn't last. I guess they were so drunk they forgot the French came back.Laugh Taquila! Laugh

Robby- The steak would have been soggy at my house. I would have cried through the whole thing.

Well best get a move on.

Have a Great Day! And that means ALL of you Jim!

Afternoon everyone!

Been a busy, busy day so far and I still have lots that has to be done.  Been at school for rehearsals most of the day and then up to Canandaigua to feed the cat and make sure all is well.  My sister should be returning this evening so at least I won't have that to do again for a while.

PC and ewl01, you have probably heard the story about the 2 farmers Ezra and Zeke talkin' over the back fence.

Ezra - You know there Zeke, I don't rightly know what it is that our boys is doin' at that there fancy college.

Zeke - Well sir, they's there getting somethin' they call DEE-GREES.

Ezra - what them?

Zeke - Well, the firstist one theys get is one called a BS, an you know what that stands for.

Ezra - Shore do!

Zeke - Then they studies real hard and spends a lot more time and they gets another one that's higher called an MS.  That stands for "More of the Same".

Ezra - Uh-huh.

Zeke - And then if they studies really, really hard and spends a lot more time workin' real, real hard, they getts the highest Dee-Gree possible!  An that they calls a PHD!

Ezra - Well whats that?

Zeke - It stands for "Piled Higher an Deeper!"

Oh and yes I have one of those "More of the Same" ones (almost 2).  Paid for it all by myself too...........Whistling

I know a good many people with that PHD thingy too.  Most have been friends for years before I found out that they were called Dr. so and so.  They tend to be great people.  The ones that are almost to a one complete idiots are the ones that always use the term Dr. and have the letters PHD  (Meaning, "hello I am much more important than you) after their names at all times.  I only 2 people I have ever worked for or with had that problem................

Jim, hope everything works out well at work!  If you haven't already, start a file with everything that happened as you remember it, date it and keep it in a folder at home.  Anything new that happens, do the same.  I had problems with one of the PHDs mentioned above at School over several years.  He threatened me, tried to coerce me on several occasions, and was genuinely abrasive.  Every time I had an incident, I wrote it up, dated it, and kept it in a file.  After he was convinced to .... ah..... retire (yep that's the right word) I never disposed of the folder.  My next principle was one of the greatest ladies to work for imaginable.  When I retired and was cleaning out my room I ran across the folder, took it home, and read it page by page.  Laughed at some of the stupid things that that guy did and said so hard I cried!  Still have that folder around here someplace.  I may write a book..........  My FIL used to have a saying on a poster at his house that read, "When arguing with an idiot, make sure he (she) is not similarly occupied".  Every time I got in one of those situations I tried to remember that poster.........Smile,Wink, & Grin

Got to get everything together for Deacons tonight at Church, so I best finish my RBF and get to w**k.

Coffee in a Soggy Southern mug, please & thanks.

***Johnboy, the (N) trestles are put aside. Those smaller two (HO) trestles are being used in the wife's river canyon. I might use the large (HO) one as part of a shelf display I haven't finished yet. Might end up selling off the (N) trestles to recoop some train funds.

***Jeffrey, nice collection there and the display is perfect.

***Sawyer, just remember school, soccer, and girlfriends are fleeting, while model RR'ing lasts a lifetime. (but do enjoy those other things while you can) Cool

Wife wants me to create "rocks and rocky surfaces" on the foam canyon. She doesn't really like it as it looks presently. I started working on this with the tile adhesive (which I still have tons of), but I'm not happy with the results I'm getting. Question: What dirt cheap material will work to sculpt rocks and rocky outcrops out of? I do have some sheetrock joint compound, if that would work? Thanks for any suggestions.

Rob,

You can try wire brushing the foam a bit (somewhere inconspicuous first just in case) to rough it up and deskin it. Can you sift and bake some real rocks and dirt out of the yard and add it over some thick latex paint in places? (Kilz undercoat with ink added works well for grey rock). The sheet rock compound also works with sand or the small gravel added over top. If you vary techniques you can get that layered rock look with a little patience. Add some ground foam and cover in places where debris would build up and you might have your canyon with character.  J.R. Oh yeah and you usually leave the water for very last so you don't get debris stuck in it.

Evening all.

Spring day out here in SunnyCal--82 down here in the Valley, and fifty miles east in the Sierra, it's in the 50's and raining like crazy.  Go figure.

Had one of my new signals go 'blooey' today when I turned it on.  No, it didn't blow the bulb, but there seems to be a little problem with the on-off switch.  Whoopee.  Thank God I've got some extra switches, I'll have to play around with them a little.  So right now, Sierra City Junction has suddenly become "Dark Territory."  Sounds ominous, doesn't it?

Corey:  I love those bridges.  REALLY nice work!  Is that highway arch bridge a kit or scratch?  It's really impressive.  As to 'planting' the hillside, your idea of using the Scenic Express armatures sounds pretty good.  I don't know if this helps, but I think there was an article in MR some months back about planting 'forests' on steep slopes.

Barry:  Ah, the "Dead Man's" theory of History.  When I taught at St. Francis, one of the History teachers was a 'Revisionist' who taught from a 'Feminist' point of view.  Nothing against that, she's a very cool lady and knows her stuff.  But we were all gathered around the lunch table one time, discussing a point in 19th Century History--the "Robber Barons".  I happened to mention something about the "Big Four" of the Central Pacific Railroad and she grinned and said, "Ah, you like the Dead White Man's Version."  I just grinned and said, "Yah.  After all, they were THERE!"  She blinked at me, and then the table cracked up.  Her along with the rest of us.

Phil:  Congratulations on the Bachelor's!  Don't you feel great that you survived jumping through all of those Academic Hoops?  Seriously, I wish you well and good fortune.  I remember when I got my Master's in Music, I just grinned at my Advisor and said, "Thank you so much, I hope I never have to look at you again in my lifetime."  Then we went out and had a couple of beers, LOL!   Yes, after that, we're still very good friends.

Uff-Dah the Viking had a coughing spell this morning.  Not a big one, but I've got to see if they continue.  If they do, it's back to the Vet's for another Pregnozone shot.  I will of course, forewarn them.  Uff-Dah does not take kindly to people prodding and poking him.   He has a reputation at the Vet's.  ("DON YOUR ARMOR, THE NORWEGIAN'S COMING BACK!").   At least Uff-Dah and myhself have one thing in common, Pollen is not our friend, LOL!

Well, heading back to the MR to see about that signal switch.  The Yuba River Sub does NOT take kindly to suddenly going back into Dark Territory, after all the work I spent updating it to the early 1940's, LOL!. Confused

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom , the arch bridge is three kits into one.  They are the Walthers, arched roadway bridge.  It comes with plans to build them together to form one bridge.  I bought them on sale for fifteen a piece.  It was a darn near perfect kit for my bridge.  I wish it was a little longer with lower arches, but I'm not complaining.  Even the guard rails are perfect.  Thanks for the compliment and the direction.
