Good afternoon everybody.
Tilled the garden, and de-weeded it.
Now since its about 1:00, might head into the basement.

***Robby, wish I could put you to work here on the ol' farm, so I could have some train room time. Weeding is not my idea of fun.
***Ray, as you know, grief can do all sorts of nasty stuff to the human body (and mind). You've made tremendous progress there. Continued success in your ongoing recovery.
***Nik...HAPPY BIRTHDAY, if I forgot to say so already.
Still much work to do around the farm. Chance of thunderstorms today into tonight, so need to get on with it. Have a good day all.
Healing thoughts to those in need!
Rob
Rob this is more the "wifes" hobby. I wouldn't mind working on a farm. I think it would be very neat.

Good afternoon...Chloe, Janie, or Flo...a tall, COLD lemonade please while I recover from YARD W**K; and I don't mean kicking freight cars around. Between the Wife and I, we've gotten a lot done, but still much to do.
My day started out in a bizzarre manner. Around 0400, something wakes me up. I'm laying there, trying to process the sound. It hits again.
It's a $#@^&*^$ $#@!^*(&%% #@!!%^&%$&** ROOSTER!
Two more of 'em chime in as well.
Turns out, the nutty neighbors put a trio of roosters in the former rabbit hutch in their back yard.
Peachy. Just peachy.
Later in the morning, our neighbors on the other side ask us if we heard/had roosters...
Evidently, the offending nut-burgers got the hint (neighborhood ticked-off), as they loaded the hutches up, and drove away with the offending birds.
Just one more episode in my future book "Who Stole My Dead Cat?" A warped look at life in an even more warped small town in Iowa.
Have a good rest of the day, and a better week...

Just got back from town. My sister, niece and my neighbor and I all took went together to take my mother out to lunch at the local steak house. I had a 1/2 rack of BBQ ribs and mesquite grilled chicken with a side salad. The others had whatever they wanted. We had the best table in the place. It was a fun afternoon.

I just poured the latex rubber and put the lumber stack in it so I can make a mold to make more stacks. I set it outside to cure as the latex does have a bit of an odor.
jeffrey-wimberly the latex does have a bit of an odor
Ahem. Are you sure it wasn't the chicken and/or the ribs?
Speaking of which I just sent my Mother home with a full stomach. I made dinner, beef roast, pan seared new potatoes, (I know but that's what the bag said), corn, broccoli/cauliflower mix and for dessert apple pie. Yuuuuuum Yum. Both mom and Brenda sat and kept asking if there was anything I wanted them to do. I knew I was being set up so, no was the answer.
Guess I'll hit the train room for a stare or maybe I'll do something.

Hey guys.
I just got back from a long day at work. I think some meat lover's pizza would really hit the spot.
Nik n, happy B-day
Jeff, Where's a good place to get that latex rubber stuff? I want to make some cast of the underframe pieces of my 85' intermodal flats, so I can make copies that are made of metal (being rubber, I'd use some of that stuff that melts in hot water) so I can bring the cars weigh up (with out plunking down 13 bucks a car for some already made ones, especially considering I have 5)

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Good Evening, Flo - I'll have one of those RBF's and a raisin oatmeal cookie please. Thanks!
Barry, as much as 'Spring' likes to run, jump, do the 3 meter dash (up and down the sides of cabinets), etc., I don't know that I'd say he is a 'Small' energy bundle... He hasn't found some wild catnip somewhere on your property, has he?
Oh, Nik.n ? - (ahem...) "Happy Natal Anniversary" to you! As other Diners said, hope you get plenty of MRR stuff for your day.
I started to assemble the bookshelves this afternoon (so I could start putting my MR and RMC mags and my MRR'ing books/booklets on the shevles), and after assembling the four exterior sides (2 sides, top, bottom and bottom front thingee), tried to move it into place in my bedroom before putting all the interior shelves in. Dang thing about fell apart on me - #%$*&^ pressed wood piece of #$%*&^$%!!! I kept the interior shelves - I think they may be useful for making a portable workbench for the MRR stuff - and the rest of the broken piece of %$#*& is in the dumpster (well, did keep those nails they give you to fasten the cardboard backing to the sides, top and bottom. Silly thing had sat around for months (or maybe a year plus) waiting for time to assemble it. Flo, could I have another RBF, please? Thanks - I think this will be a two RBF day (if not three). I feel about those things like some of you feel about those poorly designed lawn mowers...
Kinda bummed today - maybe leftover from not getting daughter's Mother's Day card to her before they left for the weekend. And now it's clouding up this evening. When I came into the Panera's this evening, the manager was saying he's planning to move to Seattle to have less rainfall. About right for our weather lately - almost every other day (okay, maybe one day rain and two days off).
I was thinking I want/need to put in the size/shapes for the structures I haven't built yet (and don't have in my layout design program's libraries yet). I might be able to re-arrange what I have in structures and see how big a space I may really need, or if I need to start selling off some of the structures. There are some I do want to figure into the design (like scale track, ash pit/conveyor, car washer, and even some larger ones).
Chris, if it were me, I'd be delighted that the 'offending' neighbor got the hint so quickly (of course, someone might've called the neighbor's place around 4:05 a.m. to warn him what might happen if said birds kept up their 'serenade'...) Now, any suggestions on how I could get rid of my neighborhood chirpies that love to come sing outside my window 45 minutes to an hour before I intended to get up? These ones, alas, are not in any enclosure that I could so easily ship down the road a few hundred miles.
After looking at all my covered hoppers (kits or assembled), it looks like I'll have almost a dozen (mostly 2-bay) ones when they're all put together. So since my long trains will be about 8-10 cars (plus the caboose) long, I could almost have a 'unit train' (okay, plus a boxcar or two for the bagged up seed, etc. during harvest time. That, or I'm going to need to have more room so I can lengthen my passing sidings.
Todd, maybe you can (several days or a couple of weeks later) - in passing - say to your wife: "Honey, remember how I couldn't think of anything I wanted back on Mother's Day? Well, I was down at the LHS this week, and that [fill_in_desired_purchase_of_your_choice_here] was looking pretty nice..." (Of course, it'd be pushing your luck a bunch if you didn't pay for it yourself...)
Jeff, I'd say you filled up that hollow leg (the one when I was a hungry teenager, I would get accused of having) at dinner with your family and neighbor today. What an appetite! Looking forward to seeing what you do with those National Oil tanks.
Ray, it seems that as we get (a bit) older (and our metabolism slows down), we have to adjust what we eat - except for Jeff, whose metabolism never did slow down, right, Jeff?
Vincent, not sure which kind Jeff is using, but Woodland Scenics has Latex Rubber (and Hobby Lobby carries it usually - I know our H-L here does). I have some of the Latex Rubber myself, but plan in my case to use it for casting additional scenery items or structure foundations, etc.
I'll kick back in the window booth a while and see what's going on outside. Hope those of you celebrating Mother's Day had a good time of it.
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau

This fellow goes off the register if I give him ANY catnip!! LOL!!!---actually, a good part of the day usually finds him by me at the 'pooter sleeping, or in Audrey's lap while she's trying to knit or read.
Oh, JimRC, anytime I've made up those ferschlugener bookcases I've always jammed ALL the shelves in. I got a mittful of the things in my trainroom and they are still standing---kinda warped shelves but at the very least they haven't collapsed-----yet--Now we tend to go to places like IKEA-----wherein at least the dang things are solid birch or summat---and just about the same prices of some of these POC things one finds----

Then came more cleaning and hacking away at the bushes. All the Forsythias, Lilacs, Cherry, and what nots are out----and causing the ol' pollen to be just a flappin' abouts. We're slowly getting things planted here---as we're STILL going to go to -1C tonight----we tend to end up waiting for most of our planting until just after the 'Victoria Day'---yes we still call it that---weekend--We've even seen frost in late June around here some years

Good Evening,
Hey JIM: Yeah, we were deeeeeeeee-lighted when the foul creatures rolled by... many "whoo-HOOS" and fist pumping/fist bumps ensued. Funny thing, when the nutty neighbors returned, minus the birds and the hutch...they didn't seem very friendly.
Gee whilleekers.

Ah, the joys of "knock it together" furniture. I guess I've been lucky. I've got shelf units that have survived multiple moves and held together. I had one completely disassemble itself on me, but it was in the line of duty working at an auction house. We had to pick up some large knock-it-together items out of a double-wide mobeel home. I forget exactly how it happened, but somewhere between the deelux double-wide mobeel home, and our truck, part of it buckled, cracked, and generally discombobolated itself. Once in the truck, the condition worsened. Upon our return to the auction house, fatal complications had set in...and we tossed it, one piece at a time, into the dumpster.
OOPS.
Hey, anybody have any use for a bunch of wood (plastic) beer barrels? They're from a Preiser "Beer barrels, beer crates with bottles" set, No. 17105. I only needed the metal kegs, the bottles, and cases, and have no use for the "wood" barrels. FREE to a good home...

I was down at my parents place helping my father fix the new mower when we got a fire call. There was a dryer fire at a home about a mile up the road from here. By the time I got there our guys had the fire under control. Can't make it for Star Trek tonight. The theater is sold out.
Coffee refill, please.
***Chris, here in the country we are so use to hearing roosters, we kinda don't even hear them anymore. Besides, anyplace that has 3 or more "roosters" probably raises them to fight and as such, those birds are worth some $$$ and a their owners would likely shoot you for messing with them. BTW, I think your book would be a real hoot. Hope you get it written one day.
***Jim, I know those kind of shelves well. That junk board that nails to the back of the junk framework is as imporant as keeping the junk shelves in place when you go to move them. And it doesn't hurt to add a couple L brackets to hold them against the wall either. Not much good for supporting anything heavier than HO stuff though.
Went out for a Banana Split, as today is my "cheat day" when I eat anything I want. Had French Toast with syrup for breakfast. Looking forward to starting another week of eating healthy, as the sugar load makes you feel yucky when you've been off it for a week.

ROB: I don't know why these nut-jobs had the roosters...but I kinda doubt it was for fighting, they're very devout believers. They just...seem to make odd choices when it comes to critters. For awhile, they had a bunny rabbit. They used to let it hip-hop around their yard (and ours, no fence). One day, the bunny was gone. Odds are good it was "dinner" to a passing dog or cat. They had a little dog. The grotesquely obese daughter may well have sat on it...*SQUIIIIISH!* They had some other kind of rabbit out in the hutch all winter long...that just didn't seem too kind to the rabbit.
I just don't think they're playing with full decks over there...
I'm wondering if it wasn't a 4-H project in the making. In fact, the more I think about it, I'm betting they were going to be "project critters." Too bad we live IN TOWN!
Maybe they figured with 60+ UP trains blasting through town at all hours, nobody would notice the birds...
I hope I get the book written too...trouble is, even though real life is often more absurd than anything in the fiction section...I'm not sure anybody will believe some of the things that go on around here!
And yes...somebody DID steal a dead cat from me...
JEFF: The beer barrel/bottles set is a neat little kit. The insanely small bottles have ended up "tossed" in the back of a utility trailer, and littering the ground around the fuel tank I'm working on. The metal kegs and cases of bottles will eventually end up at Jerabek's, a beer wholesaler/distributor; WHEN I get the RR built. It'll be a real high-class wholesaler, dealing in such wonderful barley products as Old Style, Grain Belt, Pabst, Schlitz... Should be good for a carload/week, I figure. One more place to route the yellow CNW plugdoor RBL's to.

I hauled in a Walthers GP-9M, (which is comeing in the next five weeks) a Woodland Sceneics Grass mat,(I needed that) a set of lumberjacks, (which went immeditely on my diarama, and they look good) and a Atlas refreshment stand, and that brings up a request for a How-To on adding decals. All I know about these is they are water transfer.
See yall!
Good evening Diners: nicn, a day shared with you by our #1 grandson Dan. We celebrated this and with the family (minus granddaughter who is living with her father) by watching him demolish a 1/3rd rack of ribs at the restaurant of his choice. Yesterday could have been a mrr day but for the little matter of Kris deciding it was time to do the turn-my-office-back-into-a-guest-bedroom thing. A major sort through her stuff, and cutting down a WWII era kitchen table to fit a space on the other side of the room. Removing the small shelf type extension I had mounted on it with brackets some years ago was the hardest part. The screws were very tight in the hardwood legs. All that was after painting the wall onto which the narrower table was to go, and the table of course. Fortunately, the phone line run I ran from our bedroom to that side of Kris' office for my computer when we shared the space, was still there and easy to re-activate. So, I didn't get anything achieved on the layout until quite late in the day. That was to fine-tune a Peco medium (about#6) turnout I've used to replace a Peco short (#4) by my window module. You can see where that was, and where the longer one is. Makes a longer lead to the industry, and solves a curve on the grade off the main situation that was always a pain. The trouble is that there are now three, not just two rail gaps to align at that end of the module, the avoidance of which was my reason for the #4 in the first place. Here's the yet to be ballasted situation this evening.
PC: Congrats on the Degree. On the Cosmogony, but there is a wealth of interesting stuff at http://www.reasons.org/
Vincent: I'm sure your decision about Duke, although difficult, was the right one. That's been our way for all our pets. A tough one was "Muriel" the cat we brough from England in 1967. Our daughter turned out to be allergic to her, and the doctor said it was her or the cat...anyway, on the way to the vet we stopped for directions. A couple hearing of the situation took Muriel! We hoped she wouldn't drop on them from the basement rafters the way she used to drop on us!
Corey: I agree with the consensus. Your work on those bridges and their surroundings is outstanding. I wouldn't sweat the details, you are doing just fine!
Galaxy: Kris is going to try Polisoconol, a waxy derivative of sugar cane, that is said to be great for that. She's getting a 3 month supply. We'll let you know if it works for her. Sorry about the allergies, nearest I regularly come is sneeze attacks from dust, mould etc.
RobbyP: Good sign that the boss called. Too bad the calendar wasn't pre-booked! If the boss doesn't call in a reasonable time, I'd be calling to let him know you're clear to work and still interested.
Chris:
and taking out dead trees/brush? Activities that may have helped to limit this "fire event?"
Todd:
I KNOW where everything came from.
Rob: I hear you on the Veggies thing. We're on a WAY less red meat - way more veggies and veggie protein thing. Started 6 weeks before Easter, and it's working out really well. Lots of interesting dished we never knew existed.
Jeff:
My Walther's order finally came in today.
Looks like that catches me up for now. Earlier night tonight, so I'll say goodnight and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

Good evening all,
Chloe, a cheeseburger please, with a 7-Up to chase it down please and thankyou.
For the sheer heck of it all, I present for your amusement a pic of the abandoned fuel tank I've been working on and the original pic I'm working off of. The original was shot in '84 on a Kodak 110. I was 15 at the time. I found it on my first trip to the ex-RI yard in Cedar Rapids (CNW "North Yard"). To try and come at least close to duplicating the scene, I put the components on a shelf left over from a Knock-It-Together P.O.C. Despite having a camera with lots of whistles and bells, I just couldn't get the same angle/depth of field/perspective of that little 110.
EDIT: Another DOH! moment.
I just found this posted to the Amesrailfans group on Yahoo: "The last two CNW locos were westbound through Clinton, IA about 6:30 this evening. No doubt they are on their way toward Des Moines for the special run for the CNWHS trip next weekend. The units were trailing 3 UP engines. Both appear to have just been to the beauty shop, as they were clean and somewhat shiny as best I could tell from a distance."
That would've put 'em just a few blocks away around 7, 7:15, 7:30-ish...
Good evening all--
Chloe, I'll have a hamburger with onions and mushrooms and a diet soda please-------
Got most of the brush cleaned out --now we wait to get the stuff picked up. Didn't get much RR'ing done due to all that cleanup but I am going to get some work done on it tomorrow------
Have a good'un
der5997Jeff: My Walther's order finally came in today....waiting on an order to come into the Halifax LHS, and for a pair of GP 15-1s to come in the mail. I've got the decoders ready for the GPs, and the LHS order is wheel sets and stairs and handrails destined for the container crane. I've given up on the idea of etching my own. Too steep a learning curve for now.
Evenin all, It has been a Grand day here at the ranch. I did not get in trouble not even once. Better hit the hay early and not press my luck. Did get in Toddland (of which I'm king) and do some work on the supply house, to be something else, and all is going well so far. Missed out on the whatchacallit-Bay purchase of a Proto 2000 loco in T&P BUT am not disappointed because I would have paid more than I've ever paid for ANYTHING individually so far. Sold for $71 American and I bid $70 oh well there'll be more again sometime.
Jim- Sorry about the shelf, but great idea on the HS. I'll try it. Of course on Fathers day I‘m privileged to take the herd to dinner and am allowed to pay also, so........
Vincent-Hobby Lobby has a 40% off any one item coupon on line at Hobbylobby.com this week. Could take a bite out of the stuff Jim talks about.
Chris-Um, kindly remove that delectible nectar Pabst from the list of obviously less than desirable brews.
Der-Oh I don't just dismiss and go on blind faith, well I guess I kinda do, I'm very much interested in the hows. , Just not enough to "study" per se, more of as curiosity. Though if I don't understand then the Blind Faith kicks in. I wouldn't consider myself a King. (see, I did look it up )
Chris-Looks good!
Well all thi talk of ribs has made me decide I had best get to bed before I order up some myself and I can't decide whether I'd want a sweet sauce or a tangy one so, Good night all. And God bless. He has me with a great Mother.
Prayers for our friend in need of comfort on his first Mothers Day after his loss.
Good morning. It's 70 and cloudy. The high is expected to be in the upper 80's and it will be partly cloudy with a chance of rain. My father and I fixed the mower deck problem on his new mower yesterday. Actually we just removed the steel strip along the front edge. It doesn't look like it was used as any kind of reinforcement but rather was designed to keep grass from being blown out from under the front of the deck. This could be useful if the mower was being used for mulching but since we're never going to use it for that there's not much of a reason for leaving the piece on there. Besides, if the front of the deck needs some kind of reinforcement it would be fairly easy to have a strip of steel welded along the front of it. We had a fire call yesterday, dryer fire in a double wide mobile home. The fire was dealt with in short order and was completely out. Air was pushed through the house under pressure for 20 minutes or more to clear the smoke and detect any hot spots. No smoke or flame manifested itself and all the equipment was packed up and the responding units left. An hour later the house burns to the ground. Did we miss a small fire somewhere? I don't think so. It would have shown up when positive air pressure was introduced. Was there a fault with the dryer that ignited a new fire? Possible. At this point we just don't know. The Fire Marshall's report should help clear things up. On the model railroad front I'm still working on the SD24 which is slowly beginning to resemble an SD26. I may be able to install the decoder today. I don't know yet. I haven't found the decoder for the U30C yet but I will. It's in one of the boxes in the closet. I'll have to go through them one by one. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 5/11/2009 Wind Chill: 69°F Humidity: 98% Dew Point: 68°F So Far Today High: 71°F Low: 69°F Rain: 0.00" Rain Rate: 0.00"/h Gust: 5mph SSE Today High: 88 Mostly cloudy in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Good morning folks. Not a real productive weekend, but relaxing none the less. All of the Mothers in my life have been accounted for and praised properly!
Nik, Happy Birthday this weekend! I saw it was your birthday but didn't get a chance to get on here.
I've decided to mount the trestle and track this week so I can start on the rest of the layout. I was going to continue on the valley until finished, but I need to move on now. It's so nice seeing a bit of scenery that I want to start on the rest of the layout. Once I can get the trains to go roundy round, I can begin other areas. Not that I won't finish the valley area, but the rest of the layout is just track and roadbed on foam, nothing else. I think I'm lured by the images in my head of what it will look like when it's done. I'm pretty excited at the the prospect to tell you the truth!
I have a long and boring day at work today. I never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait for the weddings to pick up in June!
Have a great day!
Good morning everyone----such as that is.
We're under a frost warning as the temperatures tonight are expected to go to -2C for a low. Some areas North of here could be seeing -3/4C before daybreak-----back to the ol' burlap trick. We don't worry much here as we tended to throw a lot of mulch around.
Jeff- That secondary fire in that house---kind of odd even after all that air but then------Our Bush Hog works well with all the meadowish stuff we got around here. There was even a lawn mower a neighbour had that had no tires---just rode on a bed of air as you cut the lawn. It was an interesting devvice to say the least! It was made in the UK if that explains anything
I have to redesign the Ellis yard as I found a few switching issues. It only showed up when a couple of friends showed up to operate on the workable---at that time--sections. Aw nuts ---grumble gripe snort snark---

Mornin all, Sounds to me, if it was around here they, wanted their house gone. Wouldn't the FD have at least unplugged the offending dryer? or even removed it? Hmmmmm.
Another busy week. Not much planned really. Just sounds good. Besides things always seem to come up.
Have a Great Day
