***Jim, getting rid of projects that (you know in your heart) will never get done is a freeing experience. I need to do more of that myself, although I've done pretty well down in the dungeon over the past week.
***Der, mighty nice job on that birdhouse. Very cool!
Moved the last of the saved (white) foam into the train room. Think it might actually work as a base to carve the vulcano from. Sure will make a heck of a mess short term though.
All is well on the ol' farm. Went from all those storms to a frost warning. Good thing we haven't planted our veggies yet.

Hello folks: I haven't read anythig since page 41 yesterday, so don't know your current news. However, I do have some photos of the completed RR themed birdhouse I've been working on for Kris' Arts Society. I had to extend the real estate from their standard to do anything worthwhile. The whole thing is "Folk Art", so please don't get on my case for prototypical correctness, besides, I'm not into steam, and did this from memory of genral principles....sort of time will tell if any birds ever nest in it!

Good evening, been afew days since I stopped by for a root beer. Now that the snowpack has all melted, we have very busy clearing away the tremendous damage done by the December ice storm. So far I have used 3 gallons of fuel in the chain saw, that is a lot of cutting and there is more to go. In between all the outside work I am still making progres on the layout. This week looks like many days with showers, so I should be able to get more done on the layout.
For those looking for Der John, Nova Scotia got hit last week with the worst snowstorm of the winter, so he has been a little busy digging out.

CN Charlie: You guys have had one tough winter!!! I am happy to hear that the flood control in your area should keep you from experiencing Fargo's fate.
SUE: WOW, another Birthday !! You sure don't look 24 to me, how do you stay so young? I know, it must be the MRR hobby!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE
DUKE: Another snowstorm hitting your area? April starts this Wednesday, what gives?
DON: Congrats to your son on his achievement!!!! It is so nice to see young folks take an interest in 4H.

We picked up some masonite for the fascia today. If we get it cut, I can proceed with filling the bottom of the stream.

Afternoon, Janie - I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich and a RBF, please. Thanks!
Well, Jerry, I don't think we got any of those white flakes in Cape G. that Paul sent along (but then again, we're 120-125 miles south of St. Louis, so in the winter sometimes Perryville - 30 miles north from here - will get snow, and we won't). I even asked several people after church if they saw anything, but nope. We did have a temp in the low 40's this morning, and I'm betting the wind chilld dropped that to feeling like the 30's. You hear that, Johnboy and CN Charlie? Grab your shorts, fishing poles, and swimming trunks and c'mon down! Just watch out for Chris' little snow patch on the way here...
Attaboy, congrats! Now, will she let you take vacations later on to NMRA conventions, shortline RR's, etc.? But at least she knows what she's getting into, and appears to be okay with that. (Maybe you could check out motel locations for the honeymoon that are close to RR tracks, reserve there, and get some railfanning in? )
Hey, Chris, I would NOT throw a pie at you for being able to con talk your bride into such a RR honeymoon. Now for other reasons, I plead the Fifth Amendment... Good to hear you got a keeper this time! Let you get the choice on your train room (and would've let you go to the fire?) Sweet! Oh, an editor have an agenda? Never!
Duke, good to see you in the Diner again (and awake between naps). Rob, sorry 'bout the mixup on that email. How'd your critters (and you and Barbara) weather the storm?Mark, I'd [ditto] what PC said - the callouses will come with practice (till you don't even notice, except for the grooves getting a bit deeper...). Which reminded me that I should get my (Epiphone Texan) acoustic re-fretted. I've been delaying because I want to have them install an acoustic pickup at the same time, and the pickup was $130 when I checked (probably a coupla years ago). Maybe I should check what a good pickup would run now, hmmm?
TMarshWell, woke up this morning' to an un-determined amount of snooow. About 8 inches on the table on the back porch. About 6 inches on the back porch rails. About 3 inches in the back yard. About an inch in the front yard. None in the house and about 3 feet where the village filled the foot of the drive up. I guess the Lord will find a way for us to get to church. Oh look! A snow shovel has appeared in the garage! My hands just fit this snow shovel!
Jeff, at least now, Ezra won't have to worry about the neighborhood kids stealing his ladder when he's asleep at night.
Eric, that plant is looking good excellent! Especially since it's so big (and all that support bracing to put in).
Okay, smarty-pants Lee - and where did the Western RR's in the 1950's or so put their heralds on freight cars? (Inquiring minds want to know...)
Got rid of one box full of old Apple videos (had accumulated them from when I was the user group contact person, many moons ago). Tossed them in the Dumpster. I'd been deluding myself into thinking I was gonna convert the VHS tapes to DVDs - except to do that, I'd need a faster 'puter, a working DVD-/+R drive in it, and a lot of time. So I have another 2 or 3 square feet of floor space showing. That was easy, now I just have the rest of the apartment to go.
Back to MRR'ing, I got out the trailer park office kit to see about starting on that (the NuComp one), but it turned out that I need to use CA or epoxy for that (and I'm out of the CA. So back in the plastic bag with everything for now, and I'll break out the epoxy, and probably use my magnetic gluing jig on that this next week/weekend.
I didn't get back to my Walthers modular warehouse that I'd sprayed the previous weekend to brick red. Need to check the location of the pilasters on one side wall, so may need to spray that again after I pull them and glue all the pilasters in the right places. I'll be glad when spring actually gets here in another couple of weeks, and I can use my outdoor 'spray booth' again.
I've been frustrated lately, because I cannot find my Pelle Soeberg/Kalmbach book - I had it out 2-4 weeks ago, but haven't found it with my other MRR books or in my book stack in the bedroom. Another reason to tackle the clutter in the apartment.
Well, I'd better get moving for now. Clutter awaits! Prayers continue for those in need (and we know who we are, right?).
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Morgan,
I agree but; the “local” railroads ran the herald on the rectangular tenders in the middle and on the Vanderbilt tenders they ran them on the forward flat half. Trust me I just finished watching 9 video tapes of Great Lakes railroads in the last 7 days before I installed the heralds.
I did see in the videos the rail road’s started covering steel coil loads in 1956! I’ve always thought those didn’t start until late 60’s early 70’s.
I just finished numbering the 2-10-2s and the 4-8-2. Now I need to do number boards and touch up some paint.
Speaking of heralds, anyone ever notice pre 1960 (99% of the time) the southern railroads have their herald on the “left end” of freight cars with the reporting marks on the right and Great Lakes rail road’s have them opposite with the reporting marks on the left and the herald or slogan on the right?

Afternoon!
I think I'll have the New York strip steak and some onion rings on the side!
PC: Thanks, I was pretty sure it'd be good because I already knew that Gibson owned Epiphone. And it was a Les Paul. Gotta like that.
Tmarsh: Yeah, I'll definitely enjoy it. We looked at a couple fenders, but I prefered the look and sound of the Eppy.
BlownoutCylinder: Well, it's not my first song ever. Last year at school our music teacher taught us how to play the guitar, for maybe twice a week for three months. We learned how to play songs like Louie Louie and Hey Jude... I only remembered the A and E chord when we got the guitar, and didn't remember the songs. So technically it isn't my first song, rather, my first REAL song.
Mark
Looks like I got this page on me! Have at it!
Howdy, Took the truck to church so I didn't have to shovel til we got back. Something very interesting must have been in the passenger seat because when we got home Missy (the dog) was extremely interested in the smell of Brenda's (the perfect wife) sit upon. So to speak. I told her she probably smells herself because that's where she sits. Who knows what's been in that seat. It's a truck. By the time we did get back the snow was mainly slush. 4,000lbs per shovel full, after a while not a shovel full. I learn, just not quickly.
Who had the guitar? Who had the guitar......Mark! Epiphone is a great manufacturer of guitars. Gibson bought them yeeeeeaaars ago to compete with Fender in the stores so some stories go.( long trade agreements /disagreements story. Used to be new Gibson's and new Fender's in the same store a no no.) Anyway, Epiphone is a very well made guitar and very affordable. Not only compared to others but especially their parent Gibson. Some buy the Eppy as a stepping stone towards a "real Les Paul" but after a while don't find that the "real" one is worth the extra $$$$$$ and stick with the "Poor Man's Les Paul" and are quite happy years later. Nice Guitar!!!
Chris-Oh yeah, I knew what you meant, and I agree. We have had and still do have, some very competent ladies on our VFD. I just had that thought cross through my head and had to say it.
OK now for off topic stuff.
Lee- Nice job. Loco looks real good.
Today I shall smear some joint compound on the foam joint cracks on the layout. Maybe make some bumpies for effect. Then maybe work a bit on some structures and things. You know piddle around in the world of choo choo's. Then off to the church. They are showing "The Passion of Christ" tonight. In Hebrew I think. Subtitled
Have a great day

Afternoon All!
Waiting for the race to start. Weather is trying to decide what it wants to do. Dry, comfortable, but still cloudy.
Finally did some work on buildings. These are modular kit pieces so a lot of glueing is involved. Still ned to brace, paint, install windows, etc.
Did a rough fit of track and building. Things will work out, I'll make it fit. Actually, I have space for this so I'm confident of the outcome. A bit unconventional because eventually there will also be a track that runs around the perimeter for just running trains. The through track will come into the scene via a hidden track. I plan on having several major scenes connected by this outside track.. It's my layout so...\

AmanaMedicinch53your wedding sure sounds like an interesting one. Oh Pally, you have NO IDEA!!! If I was to go through and list everything about the day that went completely WRONG... we'd be in Trackside Diner XI by morning from the band-width I'd have to use!!!! I'll hit the highlights: DJ was an incompetent drunk. Young nephew left unsupervised, found the shelves with the trains..."trains CRASH!" A friend tried to get my 1961 Pirsch pumper started, so we could move it, proceeds to pull the sediment bowl and dump 20 gallons of gas, most of it all over himself . A bazillion japanese beetles arrive one hour before the OUTDOOR ceremony. Did I mention the drunk D.J.? Oh, and to top it off... my FD gets paged to a workin' structure fire. My Chief and Captain ORDER me to stay put (so as not to upset new wife) while they go fight the fire. Our trucks go roaring by the place. I finally call it a day and find my bottle of Maker's Mark. Kit sees the trucks go by, thinks I'm in one of 'em. Finds out I'm in the house...and says "Honey, you could've gone... The ONLY thing that went right all day...was that I got to marry her. Otherwise...we shoulda gone with my initial plan: ELOPE. But, no....we decided to "think of our families and our friends." Thinking of others...putting the feelings of others FIRST, gets ya in a bind every time... Just reliving the day from hell makes me feel like I need a seditive... To this day, I STILL can not watch the video tape. But, she's put up with me for over five years (6 in October). She fully supports my hobbies, I fully support hers. It's a good partnership. Chris

***Jeffrey, thanks for saving Ezra from a ladder fall, as sooner or later that was sure to happen. Stairs look good & functional.
No more trees down. Wife asked me not to work on removing that one across the fence until she returns home. (she's helping her folks today) Seeing that it is right below that big, beetle eaten, long dead pine tree that hovers over our power pole, she probably has a point. Besides, it's windy and cold out today, so it can wait another day.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Zoe I'll have the #2 special this morning, over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of the sourdough toast. You can find me the booth up front watching the rain outside.
Tried to post last night when I got home from the show at 10:45, Oppppppppps!
Enjoyed reading all the wedding stories. For our honeymoon (almost 42 years ago) we went to a cabin in the woods on a little lake in the Adirondacks for the weekend. Nobody within miles of us in mid April up there. Only heat in the building was from a fireplace and an old wood cook stove. Not that we needed to be warmed up....... We did manage to lock ourselves out of the place once. Lucky we were dressed at the time.............. I had to break in through a kitchen window and unlock the door. After that we just did, uh.... indoor activities.
Show went very well last night in all regards. Have "Another Op'ning, Another Show" this afternoon and that is it.
Hope you are all staying safe and have a great day!

Good morning. It's 41 and clear. The high will be around 67 and it will be partly cloudy. Didn't get much done on the layout yesterday due to neck and upper back pain most of the day. I finally got a few small things taken care of. Hope to do more today. One thing I'm thinking about doing is tearing down pedestrian bridge and using part of the stairway for the outside stairs to Ezra's digs over the gas station. I'sure I can make use of parts of it elsewhere. It looks good but at the end of the day it just gets in the way. I have a barbecue to attend this afternoon at my niece's home. Think I'm going to miss that? Not on your life! I couldn't miss it even if I wanted to. She'd carry me over there hog-tied if need be! This is one of those 'neighborhood events' where any and all in the neighborhood can attend, and I'm sure there will be plenty of folks there.
