 Good morning.

It's 53 and cloudy. The high will be in the upper 70's and it will be partly cloudy as we see a welcome stranger called 'the sun' putting in an appearance.

Did some work on getting a loading dock set in place yesterday next to the southwest spur just across the road from the new machine shop. I then spent some time shuffling some structures around. Wonder how Ezra would feel about having his home right on top of his garage? I've heard of being close to your work before but it seems like a good idea for a home in an industrial area. Had to go in for an MRI this morning. Got that done then waited 20 minutes at a railroad crossing for a train to pass. Got a real good look at a GATX tank car full of Sherwin Williams paint. Today I'll be doing some work on the layout again and this afternoon I'll be going to the parents house for pizza.

Today  High: 78    Cloudy early in the morning then becoming sunny in the afternoon. Patchy fog in the morning. Highs in the upper 70s. Northeast winds around 5 mph.

Tuesday Night  Low: 52    Clear. Lows in the lower 50s. Southeast winds around 5 mph.

First off, Happy St Patty's day to all you fellow Irish and non Irish alike from a fellow red {and gray } bearded Irish dude. Try not to drink too much today!

I'll take the green eggs and ham special please.

...Smokers...Ah them nasty smokers. I am one of those soon to be reformed smokers. I've smoked my entire adult (yes adult. And thank you very much Uncle Sam). It never tasted good, it never relaxed me. It never smelled good, it always stank to high heaven and it always was in the way. I never liked smoking. I still don't. So why? Who knows. I used to drink a bit too much (early to mid twenties are a bit fuzzy )and I decided one day I don't like to get drunk and I don‘t need anything controlling my life. I do enough stupid stuff on my own. So, though it was a bit tough to say no, I stopped drinking. Continued to go out, but drank soda. That was over 20 yrs ago. Now don't get me wrong, I still like beer. BUT, I know my limit and am proud to say I don't have a problem. ( I know, that's what all alcoholics say. But trust me). So why not the same with smoking? Addiction is part I‘m sure, but I've noticed more HABIT. And old habits are hard to break, (ooh a song). If I am in a place of no smoking I can go all day long and not even think of a cigarette but step outside or someone say "I'm goin' out for a smoke" and without batting an eye off I go. I'm sure glad the Good Lord kept me from dabbling in drugs. AngelThis is tougher than anything I've ever done....

I started smoking {sneaking mon's cigarettes} at about 12-13. By 16 I could get away {then} of buying them myself. I have been asthmatic all my life, and I used to say if quitting smoking would solve the asthma problem I'd quit in a  heartbeat. I finally quit in 2005 after cutting way down, but relapsed for 4 months in 2007. How/why I'll never know. It didn't taste good, smell good, and I had to brush my teeth after every half cigarette. I quit again for good.

I used to drink too. I used to go through a gallon and an half of vodka a day. YES, that's right a gallon and a half of vodka a day. But it, too, was bad for me, tasted terrible and did not do my health any good. I quit drinking easier than quitting smoking. SMOKING was the HARDER to quit. I still on a some occasions drink a glass of wine, so I can't say total tea-totaler, but not drinking like a fish. I have found that I CANNOT have "just one puff", "just half a cig" or "just one cig". That is how I relapsed on smoking. There is a saying "one cigarette is is too many, 1000 is not enough". I truely believe it.

After having pneumonia last year and really not be able to breathe, going into severe oxygen deprivation every time I coughed and lost control of functioning, I can say without a doubt I will never smoke again. I now also have O2 at night when I sleep. Now I cannot stand the smell of it at all. I HATE walking into a store where there are smokers outside or the dreaded smoke released from the ashtrays.

I do hope you quit. It may be harder than quitting drinking, but go for it man. I encourage all those who want to quit to do so. I found I breathed easier, I had more money, feel better, smell things better and am glad to have that monkey off my back.  I used the patch to help me quit. Glad it was there. Good luck, Todd, and others who are going to quit! T'aint easy, but WORTH it!

"Flyin Weenie" hehe Like I said, You just can't make this stuff up any better. But yes, sometimes a stop at one of these will be a mistake, but often....mmmmm dogies! Makes up for all the bad choices. Just reminded me of a little greasy spoon about oh...27,28 yrs ago now(yeesh) in Spfld that is no longer there. Called "Ace and Kelly's"

Good morning everybody, very sunny, very warm, and very windy here in Clarence. I'm expecting another grass, field, ditch, or brush fire today. I figure every idiot with a match will be out burning something.

Todd: Funny! I don't mind a GOOD "greasy spoon." With the 'weenie,' I didn't think the food was all that great, and when the place looked downright scuzzy... just didn't leave a good impression with me. To contrast, I used to LOVE Steak 'N Shake. Some of the dudes working the grill looked...well...public health hazard comes to mind...but the food was ALWAYS good! Don't know why, but the Cedar Rapids one closed up. Gone. It was a great place to go when I'd end up teaching a continuing education EMS class at a factory on third shift.

And, I'm one of those smokers too. I can't explain it, I won't defend it. Maybe someday, I'll get smart enough (or scared enough) to quit 'em. I'm a bit of a smart-@ss, or dumb-@ss (since I smoke), so take the following comment in the spirit intended please: With Obama's push to increase health insurance (SHIP, I think it's called), by jacking the fed tax on a pack of smokes...there are now even more people depending on my nasty habit to finance their health insurance. It's like I have a moral imperitive to smoke... some kid gets his health insurance because I'm buying smokes at the Casey's.

More seriously, I won't defend "smoker's rights," but I will defend private property rights. Here in Iowa, we have a comprehensive smoking ban to where even if I owned my own business, I could not legally smoke in it. That's just wrong. Restaraunts and bars used to be able to make their own choice about it. Don't want to go into a smoky eatery? No problem...a bunch of 'em went "smoke free," by their own free choice, people could go there and enjoy all the "clean" air they wanted. Those businesses lost their competitive advantage when the bill was passed. Nobody can argue smokes aren't bad for ya...it's been known for a long, long time. So, why aren't they outlawed? The govt. (local, state, fed) can't stand to give up the tax revenue they suck out of us. Case in point, the health insurance funded from taxing smokers. If they outlawed smokes...where would the money come from?

What would they tax next because it's "unhealthy?"

I fear a very slippery slope, where we're going to be told what we can/can't eat, drink, smoke, do...all in the name of "the greater good."

OK...I'm getting off the soapbox before I alienate everybody and their cousin here.

My best wishes to all in need...you're not alone with this crew around.

Have a safe day...

Chris

Mornin' everyone!  And a HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY to ya!

Zoe I'll have the Green eggs and Spam,  without the Spam please.  I will have a side order of Bacon if ya don't mind.  Do you guys know that St. Patrick was actually Scottish!  OK, OK I'll be quiet!

My son and his wife will be picking me up early this afternoon to go see my FIL and probably say goodbye to him.  Tough time.  It will be good to have my son with me at that time though..............  Then I have practice for the Musical from 3 to 6 today.  Finally realized that I have 2 more (hopefully) working radio units that can be used for the show.  Duh!  So we should be OK on mics.

Inch, a cougar........  They have been moving closer to civilization for the past several years, so they say.  They have to live somewhere I guess and we have been building in their back yards for many years now.  As an avid camper, it is a bit scary to know that they may be around here in the Northeast.  There are cases in the Southwest where they have killed people on some well used trails...........

I still have a house to clean!  So I'll finish breakfast and be on my way.  See you all later.

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Morning (and a Happy St. Patty's Day to ya!), Zoe - I'll have some (green) pancakes, maple syrup and a coupla strips of bacon, glass of Ed's OJ, and a cup of coffee (in that green mug), please. Thanks!

Forgot to mention the other day, Sawyer, but I think your layout plan looks very prototypical (especially after seeing the diagram of your prototype RR's trackage)! Thumbs Up Hey, that work car should be fun (and maybe they'll have some train bargains, too)! Oh yeah, the teeth cleaning is NOT one of my favorites at the dentist (and the lecture from the dental hygienist about flossing..), either.

Vincent, thank you for doing your part to stimulate the economy. Yeah!! We want to keep those MRR manufacturers from having to ask for bailout money, right? Wink (Not trying to start any flame wars, mind you)

Rob, good to hear your FIL is doing okay. Has your wife been getting her sleep until he had the seizure? She needs to take care of herself too (my My 2 cents). Keeping all of your family in my AngelAngel Oh, on your Daylight/Lava Express, those cars are an appropriate color, with those shades of orange and yellow...Smile,Wink, & Grin

Lee - on that team track, I've about decided that either 1) I won't find one, or 2) if I do, it'll be priced at 'collectors' prices. I'll be making my own - as I think I'd posted earlier - using the photo from one of the kit boxes as a general guide. I may get back to you about some possible Accurail kits I wouldn't mind if you happened across at a show... I'll do some looking at a list I had made of ones from the right time periods and email you.

Inch - great score there on the locos! Bow Glad you enjoyed the show (and celebrating your anniversary!). I hear you on the St. Louis traffic and driving - and I grew up in St. Louis County area (but that was a few decades ago....Whistling) There was one weekend a bunch of our MRR club went to the Collinsville show and went by some LHS (now closed) in St. Louis County, and just getting from the Mississippi River bridge(s) across into St. Louis County was a crawl most of the way. Banged Head One more reason I don't want to move back up there.

Robby - good start on that junkyard (and I like that fence), and now the fun part! Weathering/rusting all those junk cars and scrap (and maybe even the fence?). Almost your idea of heaven, eh? Wink Have fun with that!

Dick, no need to mention more on the smoking - my Dad died of respiratory problems (even though he quit after one auto accident when he was in ICU for a while), one aunt died of lung cancer, and Mom might have gone from that, but she died of other causes first. My brother quit smoking some while back, not sure how he managed it. And Todd, I think smoking is a harder addiction to quit than about any of the illegal drugs are (worked in a treatment center for a few years, and the clients agreed about that).  I'm suprised I never took up the nasty tobacco habit, being the only one in the family who didn't start it. (okay, end of rant... SoapBox)

Duke, nice photo of the Berkies Thumbs Up - boy, I'd forgotten how black their smoke could get. Wow!! Good to see you dropping by again!

Sue, sounds like you've been productive on the layout. When can we see pics (and drool)?

Our weather here today is supposed to be like that of all you Diners east (and north) of us - about 70 F by the afternoon. We had some fog this morning (it was about 40 F when I headed out to the car). As Inch or Todd mentioned, it's supposed to cool off the last couple of days this week, though. Good ol' Missouri weather - if you don't like it, just wait a bit, and it'll change! Wink

I'll post a photo later today/this evening, but have been emailing (and talked on the phone a little) with a lady in southern California. Yeah, what am I thinking, all the way across the country? Well, we have been getting along, even though I have no idea by what means God might us together. She and I neither one have much of a budget for travelling to meet currently (but again, why be rational?). Personally, I'd say she's way out of my usual league I've dated in the past - tall (5'9"), with long blonde hair, and very pleasant on the eyes. Smile More later...(Not quite a 'Film at 11", though)

I think I must have caught that talking virus from Todd this morning (yeah, that'll work - blame it on Todd...) Time to let my food stop my mouth, I think. Zoe, I'll be here at the corner booth. Thanks!

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Mornin' all!

Lots of prayers going out for those in need of it.

Supposed to be a nice day today.  They're talking about 70 degrees!  And sun!  I asked my daughter if she'd like to go for a ride on the motorcycle after work and she said yes.  She hasn't been on it yet, so we'll see how she likes it.

Oh well, gotta run......LATER!

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY, make sure you wear something green.  Don't wanna get pinched.

Not to hungry, but I gues I will try the green eggs, and ham.  I don't really know how they will taste Chef.

Well not much planned today.  Might make a trip to the LHS, and see what I can find.

I bought a cheap boxcar from eBay to weather for youtube.  I have had several people ask me to do one.  I will start the car as soon as the car comes (probably not till this weekend).  I will give the tips, hints, or whatever I can think of.  So I will let everybody know when the car comes.  I hope it will help some people.

Well everybody have a good morning.

Mornin', Fried potatoes and gravy please. Mug of coffee too Thank you.

I'm ready for another beautiful day today. 75 degF Yeah!!(74 actually but I can't tell 1 deg and 75 sounds better.) Didn't get much done round here yesterday with the Church bookwork and a few odds and ends around there. Had to go into Spfld for to pay the fish bill etc. BUT TODAY! Get the lawn tractor ready, push mower, chain saw oh and I'd best do a little PMCS on the generator.

Dick- Sorry about your BIL. Prayers for his family and yours

Chris- "Flyin Weenie" hehe Like I said, You just can't make this stuff up any better. But yes, sometimes a stop at one of these will be a mistake, but often....mmmmm dogies! Makes up for all the bad choices. Just reminded me of a little greasy spoon about oh...27,28 yrs ago now(yeesh) in Spfld that is no longer there. Called "Ace and Kelly's" We used to go in there on Friday nights after bowling about 1 or 2 in the AM (muuuuch younger then) Place was typical diner with the grill across the back behind the counter. The cook (Ace we think) would ask you what you want from the grille and bring you what you ordered . The part that made you not want to stay was the place had blue indoor outdoor carpet (remember that stuff?) and your feet really did stick to the floor. And the juke box had an impressive collection of songs but no matter what you picked it always played either Elvis' "Blue Suede Shoes" or Mel Tillis' " She's Got The Horse and I've Got the Saddle". Or is it "I've Got the Horse and She‘s........" any who. The food wasn't that great, but it was cheap. "Breakfast only at this hour folks". Was the greeting we'd get.

Ray-Sorry to hear of your SILs Father. Sound like he was close to your heart. Our Prayers for the best.

RobbyP- I can tell it's going to shape up to be a great scene.

COUGARS!? Are you sure it's not PC scrounging around for pie crumbs?

Inch-To tell you the truth, I'm not sure who put on the train show I was talkin about earlier. My personal opinion would be that it would not be worth the trip, a special trip, of any distance. If however you found yourself here or could combine a reason to be here, then hey, it's still a train show there is generally always SOMETHING at one and it's pretty much all Spfld has to offer. Besides out by the mall on weekends puts you real close too Castle Trai-ay-nsSmile,Wink, & Grin. If it was NOT the Springfield MRR club that put it on, then I don't want to unfairly knock them. But it would be a local club putting something together so I understand that their abilities to draw vendors etc. would be limited. Glad you mentioned it. I hadn't heard of it yet. I must find out more.

Barry- Nope, no. Springfield is a unique town. They don't support much of anything. They have a convention center that, for concerts, seats 7,000 and I think Kenny Rogers umpteen years ago has been the only one to sell out. Maybe also Neil Diamond, or was it Tom Jones. Not many people support things in that town. Kinda strange town. They talk about tourism and all that stuff but nothing really big comes there and you'd figure that they would draw from a large area, I mean people drive to St Louis like it's just across the tracks, or to (gulp) Chicago. But Springfieldians won't go to anything in town other than the Giant Garage Sale (which is not) or Professional Wrestling. And I'm not sure it's even Springfielders that go to that. Of all the baseball fans in the area, they can't even hardly support a minor league team that EVERYBODY wants but seams like no one goes to.

But if either is in town be sure to let me know and maybe we could "hook up" as the younguns' say.

Smokers...Ah them nasty smokers. I am one of those soon to be reformed smokers. I've smoked my entire adult (yes adult. And thank you very much Uncle Sam). It never tasted good, it never relaxed me. I'm sure glad the Good Lord kept me from dabbling in drugs. AngelThis is tougher than anything I've ever done. Well not quite as tough as admitting to the wife that the reason all her grass was dying was due to my indiscretion with the RoundUp. That got me grounded from all chemicals for about two weeks and then I was under scrutiny for the rest of the summer. Now I'm off probation and have been using RoundUp responsibly few several years now. Though I still get a look out of the eye occasionally for the most part I think she trusts me.

Well I've yackity yacked enough. Ya'll have a great day

Happy St. Patties Day!!!!!

Chloe--I'll have a breakfast platter and a large bucket of caffeine please----

Got the back door to replace today--frame and all--so's I'll be spending the day doing that and some more yard cleanup to do. It will be quiet otherwise--gee I might get some MRR'iing done today!!

A GOOD St. PATTIES Day to all you Irish folk. I'll have my usual irish coffee Zoe, only double the irish part.

A warm day with temps in the 70's n mostly sunny for here. It was so warm out yesterday I almost unsealed the sliding door, but it's a bit early for that, since their talking colder temps later this week.

Well there's a good sign of spring here, I'm getting my spring cold. It's an annual event for me.

DICK,,,, sorry to hear bout your BIL's passing.

TODD,,, do you think the Springfield model RR club swap meet coming up Apr 5'th will be worth our drive. Mother found out about it and is talking bout going up. So she can go by the mall I'm sure. The only way I'll go with her shopping is with bribery.

She also seen a flier for the swap meet in Decatur Apr 18 & 19, she brought to my attention. So I'm sure she knows a mall round there.

JERRY,, we've been married 16 years, but have been together 30 come July. There's some N scale metal wheel that came with some stuff to send in to ya one of these days.

On wild life news, a cougar has been seen out in this area. With all the deer round here, I guess it should be no surprise. I haven't seen any tracks up close to the house yet.

Spent most of yesterday on yard work, burnt leaves till the breeze picked. Then it was raking n haulen off time along with several loads of sticks.

Tested the engines from the meet, an all but one ran. I'm hoping it just needs a good cleanin.

Best get on ta chores n get done what I can afore I get kids up. Thoughts for all those in need n hope ya'll has a gooden

Morning All!  Chloe, The breakfast special and a decaf please!

Dick, my condolances and prayers.  I'm sure most of us, myself included have a smokers story to tell.  I'm 52 and I've had asthma since age 2, now I have COPD even though I never smoked... Dad did for 35 years.  It just goes on and on....

Finally painted the boiler house.  I'll forgo the mortor affect, it overwhelms the structure.  A wash will tone down the 'redness' of the building.  I'll post some pics after work.

Good morning all,

I’ll have the GREEN EGGS AND HAM for breakfast this morning in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!

Downtown Cleveland should be a mess © today.  The town and surrounding area was settled by the Irish back in the late 1700’s and there is a huge parade most of the day and the bars will be open at 0600 this morning.  Travel by car will be impossible so I’ll be parking at the moorings and walking up the hill today to get to the office.

Jeff, I’m glad you can use those hatches.  I’ll call Randy this morning and see what he has on the order of 50’ Auto box cars.

Thursday when my LHS opens I think I’ll order two 348-23435 but in ERIE colors, can’t beat the price.

Evenin' everyone!

What a Day!  I spent 6 hours at school setting up and checking out the sound system for the Spring Musical.  Got a couple of odd jobs done around here as well, but not as much as I needed to.  Tomorrow will be shot as well.  My son and his family were going to try today to get up see his Grandfather while he still is lucid.  Didn't happen today so they are planning on going up tomorrow and I will go with them.  Most probably the last time we will see him alive.  Difficult time especially for my sister in law who has been doing all the major things that need to be done for several years now.  She has also gone through all her savings to help him and get him the care she wanted for him.  I will have to get back to Geneva mid afternoon to  get over to practice. (No practice tomorrow night - that will be clean the house time!)

Dick, my condolences on your BIL.  The smartest thing I did 30 years ago was to quit smoking.  I smoked cigars and pipe for many years.  It was my youngest son at about age 5 who shamed me into quiting.  I did and never turned back. Like some others, I don't even want to be near anyone who is smoking.  My next door neighbor smokes.  He will outside in all kinds of weather, shivering and coughing.  His wife won't let him smoke in the house.  Bet he dies of pneumonia.

Hopefully, I will see all of you in the morning.

Good evening, All.

We spent most of Saturday and Sunday working on the layout.  Larry built a diorama to display my branchline station on.  It was his first attempt at scenery and it turned out well.

I did some weathering and poured  a hydrocal foundation for my scratch background building.

We are still getting snow in the rain.  I am ready for spring.

Later,

Sue

I ain't tried a cigarrete yet, and I have no intention to. I run and such, and smoking screws up your lungs etc., and you kinda need your lungs to run; therefore, smoking would screw me bad.

I am a reformed smoker and can't stand the smell of it anymore. I picked it up from my mother who smoked. When I WAS a smoker, I was all for "smoker's rights", but now being on the opposite side, I am against it, and think it should be banned. I am asthmatic and don't need any more lung grief than I have already.

I hear you there brother. I smoked for 23 years. I quit in 1994 and still have breathing problems to this day.

Sad news, my brother in-law died, he was 62. He was a heavy smoker that just could not break the habit. To make matters sadder, he died in the hospital while his daughter was at her baby shower, her first child due next month. Ask me how I feel about Tobacco companies after loosing 4 uncles, one cousin, an aunt, and now my BIL all to lung cancer.

An Extra Prayer candle is lit for your BIL's passing.

I am asthmatic and don't need any more lung grief than I have already. Last year at this time I was in the hospital with pneumonia. Had I been a smoker still, it could have killed me. I am now very enamoured of breathing. Here in NY smoking is banned in all public places and Health Care facilities and government offices have even banned it from their campuses. Amen.

Hello everybody!

Dick ... That is so sad about your BIL. Prayers for family members. It must be a rough time. As for smoking, it's not that they kill people, it's how they kill people. Death by lung disease is just terrible.

Duke .... It's great to see you stopped by. Those 2-8-4's are really something. There is a C&O 2-8-4 at the KY Ry Museum. I wonder where you got the photos.

It's been a little busy here, and I have done too little on the layout in recent days.

Happy model railroading!

Rob, my layout is a 12ft long, 8ft wide (at the ends), and 2ft wide in the middle (where the track runs).  Its a dunk under.  I have no room to really expand.  That's where I am kicking myself.

Well I agree with the smoking.  I don't see how people pay for it.  Here is PA they are adding more taxes to them.  Where some packs will be $8+ a PACK!!!!  I have never smoked, and don't plan on it.

Good Evening Peoples---I got some more toothpicks cut for some more utility poles and got another couple of buildings done for the revised atrium. Good thing I had some books that had some pix of atriums and their frameworks

Chloe, I'll have a giant burger with fries and a bucket with a RBF in it please---I'll be doing some evening trainwatching by the windows--

***Sawyer, must be rare that someone actually likes going to the Dentist. Cool that he is into mrr'ing.

It's so much GOING to the dentist Rob, as it is getting to talk face-to-face w/ a fellow model railroader. I hate getting the tartar scraped off my teeth, and also the fluoride treatments.

Evening all,

Dick, sorry to hear about your BIL

Sawyer, must be nice to have a dentist be a fellow MRR. Wonder if he'll let you get some train stuff for being a good patient.

Robby, looking good.

I tried re-constructing the gouges in the rear radiator grills on one of my U33Cs with Squadron green putty. It's not going very well, seems the putty breaks apart when cut. I looked on the web for what would work for this, and epoxy putties are what seems to be best for this. I did however fix the broken part of one of the cabs with it. So in a bit I'll paint the window edges silver. So I'm off to find some of that stuff, and a few #80 brill bits. I have managed to get the walkways and other things painted. hopefully later I'll get around to putting a TCS A1X in one of the U33Cs.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

***Robby, nice pics. What are the dimensions of your layout?

I got the drop on the fox this evening. Was finishing up in the barn when all the birds (geese & guineas mostly) started pitching a fit and all moving in the same direction. I looked over the gate and saw (to my surprise) they were all moving in on the fox that was walking/sniffing in circles in the middle of the barnyard. I flew over the fence and heaved my manure fork at it while shouting out "Try me you %#*&^'n fox!" I got within 15' before it could react and it sprung off faster than I have EVER seen a fox run. It raced across our pasture, through the creek, and kept running across the neighbors pasture at full speed until out of site. Guess there will be no goose eggs on his menu this evening.Laugh I'll wait a few days, then hang out in the barn and see if I can get some photos of it. Sure was a beautiful animal.
