Rob, I used watered down paint, that was years ago, but coloring it before hand is an idea.  The asphalt roads here tend to turn grey after a few years and the striping fades fast from the amount of traffic.

Making progress on the factory walls.  I'm going to do some test painting on some spare walls to get my touch back.  It's been several years since I did any painting.

Jeff, Glad you are able to put those buildings to good use.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the #2 special this morning, over easy on the eggs, with bacon, homefries, and some of that sourdough toast ya got.  Bring the ketchup as well......

A fine morning here in the Finger Lakes.  The sun is burning off the frost on the roofs and lawns right now.  Currently 36°F with a predicted high of 49°F this afternoon.

Galaxy and Barry, signs of spring are everywhere.  The guy across the street is raking the area by the street to repair the damage done by the city snow plow crews and i expect to hear him start the lawn mower any time now.  (No lawn to mow yet but........ well that's the neighbor across the street.  Sometimes he mows his lawn twice in the same day.)  There have been many flocks of geese around here for the last week (Geneva is on a flyway for them and Seneca Lake is an overnight stop, except for those that now live here year around...).  And a few days ago I saw a pair of robins in my yard.  They have been here every day since then, so I figure they will be nesting in one of my trees.

I have 3 guys coming over this afternoon to run trains (practice for next week - we want to be able to know they will work then Whistling)Smile,Wink, & Grin  And I still have to do some big time cleaning.

Ah!  Breakfast has arrived.  I'll be in the front watching the switcher working.

See you all later!

We'll get there sooner or later!

 Good morning.

It's 47 and cloudy (what else is new?) and there's a chance of rain today. The high will be in the upper 50's.

Didn't get much done yesterday as I was battling some kind of bug until the early afternoon. I did get a couple of new structures placed on the layout. The Bachmann Plasticville machine shop is now across the street from Ezra's gas station on the layout extension and the Bachmann Plasticville gas station is next to the Shell station on the main part of the layout. It will become the 'Pak-A-Pig Barbecue' when I get a chance to work on it. I got my sister's new Acer notebook computer up and running yesterday and got her online last night with a cell modem. It's not much faster than dial-up but it's more than she had. Now she can send emails to her husband in Iraq without having to go to my parents house to use their computer or going next door to use her daughter's laptop.

Mornin' all!

Well, yesterday the wife headed off to Florida with her Aunt to go visit her parents, so now I'm a bachelor again.  Figure I can get a few things done around the house, and maybe catch up on some schoolwork too.  Today though, I teach, so it's about time to start getting ready for that.

Whats up with you all?

BTW, nice haul Lee!

Good morning guys!

A cup of Hawaiian Hazelnut cafe in a C & O Mug, please.

Well, warm this weekend but supposed to rain a lot. Right now sun is shining and not a cloud in the sky that I can see. Would be nice if we missed the rain as we are just recovering from some slight flooding last week.

Thank you, Sir... not quite up to the level set by some others around here...but I'm happy with 'em.

Like I'm happy with my BB Athearn's. I don't really care for a bunch of detail. That's just that much more to get broken. I get my locos to run them, not treat them like fragile egg shells.

Oh, I agree, Jeffrey, I have trains to run, not sit pretty in a display case. Details are very nice, but if I wanted a Faberge Egg, I'd have bought one! {Like I could afford one!}.

Lee sounds like you made out like a bit of a bandit. Too bad the one show is getting so "pricey" just to attend. $18.00 is $18.00 less to spend at a booth. And they wonder why turnouts become lower. Parking should be free.  But around here if we go to the Arena to see any type of event you pay for parking in the city's parking ramps {$6.00}.

Well, guys have a great Sunday!

Good Morning,

Yesterday a friend and I went to the NMRA Division 5 train show (Railfest) and the World’s Greatest Hobby on Tour Show (WGHS).
Railfest;  Two thumbs up!
This is one of the top two train shows and a must see in the area.  Held at the Lakeland Collage in Kirtland, OH on or about the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, a 2 day show.  Parking is free and admission is $5/adult, $8 couples, or $10 for the whole family.  Vendors are willing to deal on prices and most will meet or beat the Walther’s sale flyer.

What I brought home:
Walther’s Express Reefer’s, new in box.
Walther’s C&O wood side caboose, NIB
Atlas, NIB C&O 1949 steel caboose, NIB
Athearn, NIB, Grand Trunk 40’ box car kit custom professional decaled.
Athearn, NIB, PRR 50’ AUTO BOX.
Athearn, NIB, Pere Marquette 50’AUTO BOX.
Athearn, NIB, C&O Flat car, NIB, custom load: Two 1960 Ford 901 tractors chock & chained.
Athearn, used, custom pro graphics: Chicago-Kalamazoo & Saginaw, 40’ boxcar.
Unknown, Craftsman model round top AUTO-FURNITURE box car, 50’.
Walther’s Team track.
60 Proto 2000 ribbed wheel sets, 33”, metal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago,_Kalamazoo_and_Saginaw_Railway

World’s Greatest Hobby on Tour, Two thumbs down!
Admission was $18 ($10 admission, $8 to park).

Why I went: I wanted the opportunity to speak to manufacturers and find out what direction model railroading was going to take and see new products.  I wanted to attend seminars hosted by manufactures to see how they envisioned people applying their products and attain new ideas and skills.

What did I get:  I now know what awaits me in the next life if I fail to repent!

What I brought home:
Athearn, NIB, Canada Southern Railway, 40’ box car.
Walther’s conveyors.
A pink hooded sweatshirt with the Chessie cat for Dorothy.

***Chris, the shot was definately worht it.

***Sawyer, really enjoyed your pics. I am a SOUTHERN fan for sure. Have any of UP or SF by chance?

Still a cold rain with blowing wind outside. Hope the tank by the porch doesn't overflow before morning. Lowered the water level again just a bit ago, but this rain is getting heavy now.

Tis' late here so time to hit the hay. Good night y'all. Cowboy Rob

Nice shot. Note it did a good job of fixing the bug problem, lol.

Thanks!

For some reason, I feel compelled to tell the story of how I got the shot.

In early '93, CNW had their executive F's tucked away in the ex-Rock Island yard ("North Yard") in Cedar Rapids. They were going to Oelwein for storage, since GP-50s had replaced them on the business trains. One Sunday morning, "knowing" no yard jobs were working...I ventured into the depths of the yard. Normally, I hiked along the public trail on the East side, and an abandoned trail along the West. Today though...I was on a mission from God Himself to find and shoot the F's.

I found 'em, pretty deep in. Again, "knowing" nobody was around, I climbed on up into the engine room of the 401 and made my way to the cab. Sitting in the hogger's seat, I knew I had a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. While adjusting the Nikon FM-2 for the proper exposure... CLUNK THUD! Something coupled in from behind.

Uh Oh...I forgot about the extra job... "Extra 89." I'm trying to figure out a valid excuse to tell the crew, who most certainally WOULD catch me, when the unit starts rolling! Fortunately, it's moving NORTH...to the far, far end of the yard, and NOT South...towards Beverly Yard. Realizing I'm heading in the "right direction," I start to relax a bit as the F rocks and rolls along up the yard track.

I go ahead and get the shot, then go back to wondering/worrying about what kinda trouble I'd be in. The shove stopped almost at the switch to the former mainline. I moved to the engine room for awhile, in case the switchman was headed my way. Eventually, I poked my head out, and seeing NOBODY, I high-tailed it for the safety of the trail.

I think the shot was worth it...Whistling

Hey, did we ever locate the pie case???

Part of why I'm fond of F's...

EXACTLY!

I'm hoping someday they'll run on a layout. For now, they sit on a shelf...but they're not museum pieces.

I'd like to think those 40-2s are "functionally detailed," that is, they've got some extra parts, but can still get out on the rails and work.

And, for anybody wondering, the 6801 is a GSB Rails unit...so God only knows IF it would even run... The other two are Athearn Bluebox, one powered, one dummy.

So, could any of the raw material from a volcano be used in road building?

I think one can--I'm trying to remember the actual composition(s)--it depends on the prime material coming from the volcano--each region seems to have differing compositional makeup so you'd have to make it up--heeheehee.--places like Trinidad-Tobago for example have pitch pools with temperatures near 80C, Then of course there is the La Brea tarpits---so you can just go nuts.

Hey, they look more detailed than mine. All of mine have no detail parts added. Probably going to add some to my U23B at some point.

I don't put a whole lot on 'em... I stick to the "basics" such as the nose bell (gotta have that to make it CNW), horn, beacon, radio antenna, plow, mu hoses, and coupler lift bars. Grab irons and lift rings, cab sunshades, a vent or two (if I see it in the prototype pics), and a drop step; that's really about it.

It adds up fast financially, but just looking at Details West and Detail Associates listings at Walthers, it's obvious I could stick a bunch more stuff on 'em. I'm not going for a rivet counter's delight, or a contest winner...I just want enough detail on them that they "look right" for CNW power in the '88 to '93 era. I still need to put some black gasket decals on the classification lights. I did that to one or two others...now I "have" to go back and retrofit the rest.

The dangers of detailing, I guess ballanced against the "good enough" theory.

 Evenin' everyone!

Man, I need to sitt and relax a bit.  I've been going nonstop ever since I got home this noon after the funeral.  We got "Big Al" sent off to the next life with some style.  This was not one of those maudlin, sappy, everyone get a hankie type funerals, but complete with full organ, upbeat hymns, a pair of trumpet/trombone players, and our Men's Gospel Quartet.....  Turns out Big Al was a trumpet player back before I knew him and the trombone player doubled on Al's old Trumpet on a couple of pieces.  Place was packed, BTW.

I have the layout up and, more or less running trains.  Incredible how you find all the places where you didn't quite finish a project right before people come over to see and run the layout......  The team track in the front of the yard at Hopewell was originally for programing locos.  I pulled out the program wiring and hooked it up to a new dedicated programing track by my worktable.  Never rewired it for regular DCC.  So I go to back a loco with a car into the track.  Stalls.....  Of course it took me 20 minutes to figure out why.  Easy fix that involved moving two wires and reconnecting.  Go to the other side of the layout where I have a staging track on the upper loop.  Go to put a 4-4-0 and milk train in there ready to go to work tomorrow.  Loco stalls on the frog.......  never put the wiring from the tortoise over to the frog.  Solder up a spade lug to a short wire and connect that.  Of course then it shorts out.....  needed to reverse the  DCC wires to the tortoise.  Again easy fix but frustrating as I had 5 other things that needed to get done tonight, that now will probably have to be done tomorrow morning.

Galaxy, more like Captain Nemo I think...........  I actually did study Pipe Organ for a few years and was an organist (of sorts) at a local Episcopal Church in Geneva for a couple years.  I have actually had around 18 years of keyboard, but you would never know it to hear me play.  I was a singer and (classic) guitarist primarily.

Ok if I finish my coffee and get back to work I may get a couple more things done tonight.

Later!

Rob  like I said, it SOUNDED like a good idea.  Like you said too much stuff required.  As for roads, I have used wallboard compound and Hydrocal.  The roads were relatively thin so the compound didn't shrink or crack.

Hot Fudge Browmie Delight, please & thanks.

***Barry, you dog...that's a whole lot of motive power you aquired in one fell swoop. Excellent!

***Johnboy, wonder if it would count if the Lava Java Coffee Shop was on my wife's layout instead. I am not going to have a town on my layout, although a coffee shop next to a gas station on a highway passing through the barren landscape would certainly make sense.

***Garry, the pumice would be heading to the soap making plant.

***Eric, very cool idea, but man that industry be a LOT of work to model. All those pipes & structures.

So, could any of the raw material from a volcano be used in road building?

And speaking of roads, is there a real simple way to build decent looking roads on a layout inexpensively?

Still a cold rain outside. Up to 2" predicted tonight.
