Trainman Sam Well, I decided that I was not going to sit idley by just because I couldn't glue down my foam... So, I prepped my new Bachmann Maintenance of Way Rail Detector Step Van for DCC. It took me all of about 10 minutes to figure out the process of separating the van body from the motor mount. I then had to figure out how I was going to isolate the motor from the two frame halves, which I found that a piece of elctrical tape sliced into thin strips and used to wrap around the ends of the motor worked sufficiently to also allow air flow accross the motor to prevent overheating with prolonged use! Now I put the whole thing back together until I can purchase the Digitrax DZ125 decoder ( I want to use this prticular decoder due to the fact that it has Fx3 functionality, along with Back EMF and "Switching" mode)

I don't come in for one whole day and you people have moved the diner again? Wow, that must be like 8 times in two or three years...
Well it looks like it might rain today, although yesterday was great... Back to being Seattle, I guess.

Hi guys,
Some Chloraseptic spray for my throat, please. Going to the walk-in Dr.s today to be sure I don't have strep throat. That won't be any fun. Won't wait til tomorrow when i might possibly see my regular Dr.

Yeah, but do they all have to go at once???? And when you don't have the money? And when there's a recession and everyone is raising their prices? The dryer {haven't bought one yet} that matches the washer series is now $100 more than the washer was! The stove we want to convert to gas. That will mean a gas connection, too.
AND we need a new faucet and sink in the bathroom...both beyond repair, basically. We are turning water on and off under the sink. AND we will need new skirting. AND....
Last year it was my 10 year old van hundred dollaring me to death, this year the house. My oh my!
AND my other half wants another trip to Hawaii or to Disney World this year!!!! YEAH, RIGHT!
Try and have a wonderful day everyone!

Finally, not one thing I absolutely HAVE to do!Thing is, I've got a few things I've been putting off that I should do, so I'll probably do those today. The good part is, at least there's no real pressure to get them done by xyz time. I'm supposed to have read the Screwtape Letters for a class, and I've got that book on tape, so I see that happening today. Also, I'd like to change out my headlight bulb on my motorcycle for a brighter one I picked up earlier this week. Lastly, I want to do a couple things to my hot tub project to get it ready for water and testing. Yeah, it's getting that close to done! I should be tubbing in style for under $500 soon! Oh, and a nap is figuring pretty high on my to-do list today too!
Sam, I'd put one (maybe two) small LED inside the back of the truck and then run fiber optics from there to the various lights. You can add color to the lights with some of that stained glass window type translucent paint on the tips of the fiber optics. Painting the shafts of the fiber optics black will keep the colors from bleeding together and it'll keep the blinking LED from affecting the non-blinking LED if you go that route. The biggest downside is that all the lights will have to be on all the time, or they all have to flash as one, unless you use more then one LED. The upshot is that the fiber optic ends, even mushroomed with some heat, are very small and can give you a scale sized light bulb! Just my
WARNING......RANT dead ahead!
And as for not using "That" word.....THAT'S CRAZY! The English language is a constantly evolving language. It's like a living being, growing and changing as it does, and to restrict it in such an arbitrary way is to effectively choke it. The only restrictions that ( I used it!) should be placed on it are those that ( Again! This is fun!) the society using the language deem, as a whole, to be socially unacceptable for some reason, like swearing. It's not socially acceptable, or considered polite, to use those words that ( OK, now I'm just getting carried away!) society has deemed as "foul" language. I'm not aware that (This is kind of fun!) the word "that" has been added to the that (See, here's a good use of the word in question!) unsavory list. ( THREE TIMES IN THE LAST SENTIENCE! That (!) has to be some sort of record!) Lastly, you might remind her of those famous words of William Shakespeare, "To be, or not to be, that is the question!" Is she presuming herself to be a better practitioner of the English language then William Shakespeare himself? Would she be so presumptuous as to think that (This has got to stop!) she could correct William Shakespeare in his use of the English Language? Just tell her that (I'm out of control! Someone stop me!) imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and you are merely imitating Mr. Shakespeare when you use that (this is bordering on lunacy!) word. I don't see how she could possibly put up a valid argument to that! (Oh the madness of it all!) If she somehow persists, have her rewrite what I just wrote here, without using the word in question. Even if she manages to remove all of my uses of it, she will misquote Mr. Shakespeare if she dares go there! And imagine how difficult the syntax would become in this paragraph! You see, to not use that (The insanity of it all!) word would make the English language quite cumbersome, as one would have to constantly keep re identifying the object one is talking about. The word in question takes on the job of a pronoun in this case, and thereby facilitates a fluidity of the language. Does she dislike other pronouns, or is she biased to only this one? If just this one, isn't that (Are the language police coming yet?) like being a language racist? Boy, THAT (Oh the humanity!) should stir up a whole hornets nest! But I digress.......... /rant I'll go back to my corner now.............So whats going on with you all?Needin' some prayers? No problem.....gottcha covered! I pray for you all constantly!
Good morning all,
Snowing outside, but the weather guesser said no more than 1” of accumulation today.
Sam: How large is this VAN? I would think the 1.5 mm led would be your only hope. Quicker electronics has a rotating beacon LED but I think its 5 mm.
Garry, I love the dinner are we going to see girls on roller skates delivering food to the cars?
Sawyer, have you ever been to a Camp operated by the Marines? Do a Google search for:
USMC hydration chart
it is an interesting concept, you match your urine color to the chart and it tells you how much water you need to consume to bring you back to a safe hydration level. Did you know you can dehydrate faster in cold weather?

I guess I better go, I think I hear the wife getting up.
Be back later.

Good Morning People. The current temperature is -5C and that is where we will sit for the day. We are having another 2-5cm of the white stuff with potential for more if snowsqualls show up, otherwise a mix of sun/cloud. Tonight's low will be -11C.
I'm doing an early spring cleanup of my trainroom today and watch a couple of old train videos as well. I'm trying to wrestle some more workspace from the stuff cluttering it all up. Otherwise any posting of pix from this petunia is going to be very cluttered----

TMarshAnyway, my English teacher had that pet peeve herself. Said it was the most unnecessarily over used word in the English language.
Hey, NOW I remember why she doesn't like "that," that's why...I remember her saying that now about "that."
Huh.
Imagine that....
***EDIT***
Oh, and Sam? I think that's her goal for me...to get me to consciously or subconsciously find other alternatives to that word. Maybe it's a mental thing... maybe SHE'S mental. I wonder if she didn't have some psychotic English teacher, maybe some psychological trauma for saying said word.
Good night everybody....

Todd. Any editor I have had gave up on me as a lost cause--I'd be so incorrigable. Oh THAT(grrr--reaches for throat--NO! NO! GAA---AA-CK!!) and some other turns of pseudo phrases would be things "like", "sort of", "um", "er"---and the pregnant pause.
----------------------as for high schools WE had 3 of the things, Plus I went to a public school that(OHNO OHNO--Runaway flee flee!!!) actually looked like an inner-city slum school than a 'normal' school--it came complete with fencing on top of a concrete wall, asphalt play area so that we could really injure ourselves, and dead trees. This in a 'city' only 20,000 in population. As for outhouses ---well----- BTW--we, as kids going to this ---er---fine establishment called a school would frequently talk about going to 'prison' on Mondays to Fridays--and we also could not fraternize with members of the opposite sex--segregation by gender( could not even play in a playground together but we were together in a classroom)--and people wonder why we're so odd-----
Hey Amanamedic: Have I passed the "That" test??? Please check my previous two posts as well!!! LOL, I didn't do it intentionally, but it seems I may have subconciously avoided using said particular word!!! It's amazing the subconcious mind, isn't it???
Well, Good Night all!
Again, I pray for all of those in need (which is pretty much all of us isn't it)!
EDIT: I forgot to ask: If anyone knows which LED is the best one to use for the strobe light on top of the step van? I want to replace the simple little "DIMPLE" of plastic which has been painted with a "Safety" orange/amber. I figure since I am already going through the trouble of installing a DCC decoder I may as well install headlights, taillights, and the strobe light, and possibly even a figure in the driver's seat!!!

Barry, around here you would be surprised what is a mall. I think if you left an old outhouse sittin' somewhere there would be at least two vendors in there (need at least two to be a mall. There are mall rules ya know) sellin' something.
Garry, Niiiiice diner!
Chris, yeah just funning'. I remember in High School, what?, YES, Barry.... Williamsville DOES have a high school, and YES it is more than just one room. Oh for .....YES it has indoor plumbing. What a jokester . Anyway, my English teacher had that pet peeve herself. Said it was the most unnecessarily over used word in the English language. That...and mall.
G-night all. Prayers for those in need

Good evening ....
Here are a couple of photos for you........
First is my roadside diner that I made on the dining room table during our recent 9 day blackout following the ice storm. All work was done during the day when dalight came in the window. It will be a while before it has a place on the layout.
The marching band is to welcome Jeff home.
The second picture is another view of my new dining car. I posted 2 other pictures in WPF.

Building a protolanced industrial park layout
Well, as I mentioned before, I have gotten the smaller table, the one which used to be part of my Poppop's layout, from my parents home to my current one! I removed all the remaining particles of cork and track nails from the top surface, and I am now searching all over this house for a caulk gun... NO LUCK, called my fiancee and asked if I could borrow one of her fathers caulk guns tomorrow after church, which the answer was YES! So now I am in a hold pattern until tomorrow to get the extruded foam board glued down. Which, I have to run to my self storage unit and grab the cork roadbed that has been sitting in a box waiting for it's moment in the limelight, hopefully I can still make use of it! Here is a photo of the table top, post scraping!
I did however forget to take the photo of this thing once I had brushed off the debris... I apologize for the grainyness (if that is even a word, well it is now!!!) but my phone doesn't take great photos... I believe this section used to be staging on my poppops layout (if the marks of where the cork roadbed are any indication, that is my guess.)
Jeff, I hope you are resting!?! We all missed you a lot (you not being here we couldn't hit you with pies!!!) Glad you are doing better! I'll be praying for your full recovery my friend!
Prayers for all my friends, known and future! I'll just hang out here near the back, and have a glass of Coke (Coca-Cola for those who want to be over ANALytical!!!) and a big bag of popcorn please? Thank Chloe!
CNCharlieQuestion for PC, I'm looking at getting a Proto Berkshire in N and I can't seem to find anything on converting it to DCC so I assume it isn't DCC ready. Do you know anything about these locos?
This one is a bit of a monster to convert.....probably one of the toughest conversions out there. I'd probably opt to just pay someone a few bucks to do it (Like these guys maybe if you don't have anyone local) if you aren't comfortable tearing this bad boy down completely and then milling on the frame. There are directions here, but it's a real challenge. On the bright side, it's a very nice loco and a good puller, so it's a good candidate for the job.
Todd--this would be the dangest thing for a mall. Imagine a mall that(AAAGGHH!!) has glass on all sides and the buildings kinda sorta inside(OK-backwalls are part of the glass sided bit). I've yet to see some malls looking this---er--um--eccentric(-that's it!). Sort of 'Post-modern' if you will.. I'm sure there is a prototype for it somewhere---------
Good Evening Diners!
Say all this talk of train shows and nary a one to be seen anywhere around here. In fact there is only one a year and needless to say there aren't any manufacturers present. I haven't bought anything for the layout for a while and I'm starting to get the shakes. Oh wait, I do have an order waiting for me at my friend's place in Thief River but it'll be a couple of months until I get back down there. I feel a little better now.

Great to see you back in the Diner Jeff and that you're feeling better.
We had the usual running around Saturday but my wife did take me out to lunch to a place we like that does great mussels in a Pernod sauce.

As a self-taught "urinalist" (if somebody doesn't like what I wrote...they can p--- in it!) I'm not only developing my craft, but working through the subtle stupidity of "AP style." I guess the good thing about not having gone to a "J-school," is at least I didn't get introdoctrinated as to what "causes" I'm suposed to be an advocate for, or what my "agenda" is supposed to be. Being self-trained, I just deliver the facts, and let the reader decide for themselves. Unlike my counterparts in the big-time media, MY readers should not be able to tell my politics from my articles.
Wow.
Where did THAT come from???

Crikeys! Top of the page?
Well boys and girls, order up...
Evenin' all. Hmmmm let's see I'll have let me think......
Sure sounds like everybody that got to go to a train show had a terrific time, nice grab Ray. Jerry, Inch and myself will just sit here and sulk.
Eric, Thanks for the pictures. I enjoy shows. Though I can't say from experience but I read somewhere that WGH shows aren't the greatest anymore. Anybody else heard that or agree/disagree?
OK the menu just showed up. Oooh the Welsh Rarebit sounds delish, (did I just say "delish?) with a Dr Pepper and the baked Apple with cream for dessert Thank You.
Ryan, can you make that noise with your Clarinet like my sister made with her sax? You know that noise that makes your eyes bug out, cats run for the hills, dogs pass out and the devil just give up on your soul? She was reeeaaal good at it.
OK what's the deal page 4 won't load it's been 5 minutes. This is like waiting in line at the bathroom. Dum, de, dum, dum,.. Ah there we go.
Alright Colby, very funny. What's the deal with the tiny pictures for us old fellers. Oh wait... click on picture. Great photos. Looks like you've done a bit of work there. Is it continuing off the shot? It looks like it.
Jim,.....yes. And I love the quote. True, so true.
Got some stuff moved out to moms again. Got my trip to the FLHS. Of course I had to suffer through an agonizing 15 minutes in the yarn section of the Michaels store before we could get to the all too brief 45 minute shopping blitz through Castle Trains. Barely had a chance to get what I needed let alone have time to poke around. Good to see THAT they had business. Picked up a few pieces of flex and some styrene for rollup doors. I still can't remember what I really needed from there. Still windy here and starting to flurry.
I'm afraid to refresh to see if anything's happened so I'll just sit in the back and rest a bit. Scoot over Barry, I see an issue there THAT looks interesting. Oh and let's talk about this arcade thing, you see here in the States we call them MALLS. And even though you Canadians have technically been around longer than us newbies on the block, THAT.................
MadSingerJust to spite that crazy editor out there, that that that that that. Ohh. What now?
I love it!
Now, in all fairness to my editor, also known as the Boss's wife, we all have a "hang-up" about something, hers just happens to be the word "that." I'm not sure why. Some writers use it almost to excess. I don't know, I'm just a photographer that (OOPS!) had to become a writer, a self-taught journalist. I'll say this, it does take a certain amount of thought, pre-planning, and even some creativity to find ways to avoid using THAT word.
Thanks fer checkin' in there MadSinger, and take care of the asthma 'eh? Otherwise we'll have to add you to the sick call list too!
MadSingerJeff- stay outta the hospital. You'll end up like this - I have terrible asthma and have been hospitalized for it. I guess I'll have to say what I have to for my grandpa and uncle. Know your limits.
Good evening people--Chloe--I'll have a coffee and a hamburger deluxe with gravy on the fries please.
I spent the day chasing after things that went AWOL in this house. We now have a Must Find and Put Back Where It Belongs list. I also got the glass plate scenario solved. Now the building(s) are going to become a glass enclosed shopping arcade. This, on top of wiring for lights in the place, is going to get interestingTodd-I've decided to stick with the Pigma pigment .005" thing. It looks better than the standing seam idea I cooked up--
I'll sit at the back and look at the mags
JimRCGMOLove that little ice cream stand - can you tell who makes/made it?
JimRCGMOJeff - I hope that photo isn't of where you put all the gravel (ballasting track at 1:1 scale? Not a good idea...). No wonder you wound up in the hospital, in that case!
It's dark out so there's not much detail. The ditch is about 18 inches wide and around 60 feet long.

Fergie good to see you back. So what have you been up too. The ice is bad in a bunch of the rivers. Lots of work for the breakers to clear it out.
