Briefly, thanks to those who responded to my prayer request. It was appreciated by our friends. These people helped us thru the ordeal of the death of Shelley's sister last year, and they helped much when I had my problem in the middle of August.

Der ... I sent you a PM.

Jeff ... The trucks on your loco look a little like Trainamster trucks, too. Not the same though. Have fun!

More later.

The consensus of opinion so far on the mystery loco drive is that it may be some kind of Atlas variant.

please & thanks.

***Lee, those magnet rakes look cool, if they really work. Sure could have used one before I spread all that dirt. Going to plant grass and let whatever metal nails & such I missed simply rust away under ground.

***Der, the first N scale freight building I ever had was the same as that one you posted. One day I hope to replace it, for sentimental reasons.

Good afternoon folks:  Latest track of Kyle shows it heading straight for Yarmouth, not on the more westerly course predicted this morning.  So, we are in for a windy day tomorrow, with gusts up to near hurricane force, and Fergie and Luc could have a slightly worse time of it. Not too much rain here probably, but we shall see. All this info courtesy of  http://www.stormpulse.com/ (thanks Dick!)  So, I got my walk after lunch today OK, and it was a warm one, with all the Gulf air being pushed up ahead along the eastern seaboard.

Paul: 33% humidity sounds like an Alberta winter! Getting that moisture level up is a way better fix than meds, and a tad cheaper too!

RT: I like the thought of those remote operating couplers, and the back talk sounds very cool. Too bad that sound is a long way down the list for this layout!  Maybe by the time I get around to that, the technology will have advanced to where it's possible for both those features!

Trains:

I did a little work on the layout today, scenery work, tomorrow I'm going to do a little wiring,
...Photos? Enquiring minds need to know!.....Big Smile [:D]

Lee: Thanks for putting up those HO locator sites.  I browsed through and saw Revell, and a pic of an old friend from my A&W Alberta layout, the suburban station. ...so while on the Revell site, I looked some more, and solved a puzzle.  There was a  kit in Horribly Oversized for a freight building I have in Normal. From the way the main building is chopped off, I had thought it to be a kitbash, but no, there it was revealed as Revell!

John, the dock looks pretty good!
...thanks, if you aren't ROTFL, I'm happy, 'cause I'm making it up as I go along!

Tea time, after which I'm doing drawings for the container crane starting with some photos. First, I must find out what a 33" Z scale wheel is in N inches!

Good morning.

It's 64 and clear. The high is expected to be in the mid 80's and it will be partly cloudy.

Yesterday I mowed my parents yard (if you could see it you'd know what a job that is, even with their huge mower) then did a few odd jobs around the property. Afterwards my mother and I went to El Giro's restaurant in town. It's good that she's able to get around again and we want her to get out of the house some. After that I came home and worked on the layout a bit and puzzled over the mystery drive in my GP35/S6 (chop-cut-rebuild) to try and determine where the parts came from in case I need to get replacements. I'm 95% certain the frame is Kato. The motor may be Roco. It was made in Austria. The trucks are the big mystery. They look ALMOST like the trucks in my Kato RSC2 but there are differences. All I can find on them is 'China'. I'm fairly certain the flywheels are Athearn. I can't complain about it's operation. It runs smooth as silk and I certainly have no complaint about it's price (FREE).

Evening Gang: I left out a word in my last post. That word is frost, very important. I did go back and add it.

Der Mary Ann and I had a nice nap but still felt bad after. The kids brought us a couple of humidifiyers. We set one up in the bedroom. It has a sensor for humidity and it read 33%. No wonder our moths and throughts were so dry. It's been running for an hour or so and it feels better in here already. The morning will tell.

Well I'm going to hit the sack.

Good Night All

Good evening Diners: Quite a productive day, all in all. The blackened rails are now installed on the dock, ready for the crane to be delivered. (Insider information tells me that the manufacturer hasn't even got the drawings done, let alone begun construction, so there could be a small delay!)  I began typing this while the glue dries to hold the end stops to the dock, prior to painting concrete. Photos when that's done, after dessert I suspect.

On a technical note, I see that container cranes don't run on train type rail, and the wheels are double flanged. Too bad, as all I have is the code 55 (Z?) and Z Scale wheelsets.  I'm going to have to cut those down to yield eight individual wheels for the "inline skate" type trucks the crane runs on.  I also see that the rail is mounted in a poured concrete casting.  This is fortunate, because modelling that has allowed me to cover over the slight mess (sorry Fergie) my contact cement for the rails made along the edges of the rail. I've made the casting out of strips of Evergreen Plastics .010x.188" strip, cut lengthways to give me 1 scale foot wide pieces to glue on top of the rail foot, both sides. I used super glue for that, after first painting the strips. Since I didn't seem to be capable of cutting the Evergreen strip exactly in half lengthways, I ended up with four thicker and four slightly more narrow strips.  Making a virtue of necessity, I put the narrow ones along the further of the two rails, thus giving a little forced perspective.  I followed that up by putting the two slightly thiner of the four "identical" end stops cut from blue Styrofoam on the further track also.

Time for tea and dessert.  I'll have an Earl Grey please, and a banana chopped in milk, with a sprinkle of ground Cassia, some Toasted Oat Os, and strawberries and blackberries to top it off. Thanks Zoe.

Garry: Sorry to hear about Diane.  I've put her and Wayne on our churches' National Prayer Chain. Could you let them know, by way of encouragement?

Paul:  Were you able to get that nap?  Hope you sleep better tonight, those allergies are no joke.

Rob:

Wife is taking a break from nursing to pursue writing. Will need to seriously tighten up the belt for a while, but I think it is worth her giving this a serious effort. This is not without outside/professional encouragement. She is VERY talented in this area. Wish her (& us) luck!
...We do!, and Kris says that your wife has a better chance at making a go of it in the US than she does here in Canada. The publisher of her novel has defaulted on the contract in the matter of royalties...things are in a flux at the moment, and we are waiting to see what next month, "the month of promised payments", brings. It looks as if the publisher may have been taking trips abroad at the expense of the authors. Wish us luck too!

Well, dessert was delicious, the glue's set and the paint's dry.  So here's the latest.  I've had a go at adding bumpers to the dock yesterday.  They are a bit undersize, no doubt, but what I had on hand were the plastic covers from the levers of Radio Shack switches. (The ones with the black plastic cube mechanism and contacts) I used truck bolsters for the retainers, as they fit nicely into a 5/64ths hole drilled in the dock, and thus hold the rope or chain or whatever that is.  I painted them yellow, but left the bumpers plain white. If that isn't known to marine science, then I can paint them, open to suggestions. I've seen pics of grey, blue or sickly yellow, none of which turn my crank, but I could live with blue or grey.

and a close up of the stops...

Jeff:  Considering the note, I think your guess is right, that drive's  kitbash.

Trains: Sounds like you had a great trip. I'd like to see the Jim Henson exhibit , but not enough to actually make the journey!

That's about it for me. TS Kyle later tomorrow by the sound of it, but I expect it will be quite windy and raining most of the day.  We have broken the back of the outside work, finishing up chipping a pile of rose branches and old spruce boughs that has been sitting unattended to, growing slowly for about 3 years! Now it can rain and fill up the well again.  The fish in the pond won't mind either.

Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort, and peace.Angel [angel]

Anybody got any idea what kind of loco drive this is?

It had what looked like an Atlas RSC body on it when I got it. The frame has 'Made in Japan' on it, the trucks are from China and the motor is from Austria. Does any company make something like this or is it a kit-bash from someones junk box? I got it in the mail. No indication who sent it, no return address, just a note that said I hope you have as much fun with this as I did. This drive is what I'm using in my GP35/S6.

I still have 2 locos on the layout (out of 14) that need to be lettered. They will both be lettered for the MGRy. I have only 2 locos lettered for the L&A. It's a light freight operation servicing a branch line with lightweight rail, hence L&A 227, a GP35 which has been modified for the purpose. The other loco is a GP40 the line picked up as a rebuilt wreck. It's used on the heavier part of the line which goes onto the MGRy. Both are in line for decoders, nothing fancy, just the Bachmann standard.

Afternoon Gang: I had a mesarable night. The allergies will be going on until the first frost comes along. That can't be too soon for me.

Jerry good to hear that the chair got fixed quickly. I think that if it were me doing the repairs I'd replace the chair. Is it still under warranty?

I'm going to cut out and take a nap. Mary Ann is already in bed.

Hello everybody!

Terry: I just saw your water. Wow. I would loan you our kayak, but it might take a while to get it to you.  I heard you had a b'day. Happy late b'day, youngster!

CN Charlei. Yep the 928 has quite a sound to it. We still have a problem with paperwork and it's just sitting in the garage meanwhile. Next, it needs a lot of work.

Tom .... Does Lowell have favorite flavor of Gerbers? I would not like having a cat on my pillow when I'm sleeping, but to each his own. I hope that knee heels soon. I bet the topside creeper is not in use.

Everybody... I mentioned in recent months that a close friend of ours at the church has cancer and was going through chemotherapy. This Tuesday, the 30th, she will have surgery to have her bladder removed. She and her husband are very active in church. It does not sound good at all for her. Also, they now have their first grandchild as of about two weeks. My prayer request is for Diane and her husband Wayne. Thanks.

everyone. I'll have a medium JR Regular please, and a slice of the banana bread with butter, heated, thanks Janie. Have to leave room for Ryan's Chicken and Sausage Gumbo for lunch. Dinner [dinner] Thanks Paul: Hope you are feeling better today.

Rob:  You are not alone! You aren't the only pregnant male around, it seems http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080926/koddities/oddity_pregnant_grandfather Big Smile [:D]

Justification for pack rats!  A couple of years ago I put aside one of those plastic rod things that controls the vanes on a set of Venetian blinds. It would "come in handy some day".  Today is the day.  I need to blacken the rails for the container dock crane before I install them. They are Z scale rail, 26" long. That's quite the trough, if I were to lay them down in Blacken-It ®.  That rod turns out to be hollow, and is 24". The rails fit nicely in there, and the closed end is sealed with some glue, so clamped vertically it's just right for the job. Yeah!! [yeah]

Jerry: That's really good they were able to get you a replacement motor fairly quickly. Answer to prayer, I'd say, despite the night in the power chair..Angel [angel]

Terry: Two weeks is long enough without power. I guess the freezer stuff is toast (or not!)Sad [:(]  Still, as you say, it could have been much worse.

Jeff:

to find out why the check engine light won't go off.
...when our old van was like that, and it needed a Motor Vehicle Inspection permit, the local service centre (who can't issue the permit until the light no longer comes on) told us that about half the vehicles that come in have that light on!  Fortunately for us the computers did talk to each other, and it wasn't a major item.
...and found the other tracks again
...can get like that all too easily, can't it? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] , hope you're connection improves. We're on DSL, which is copper phone line to the hub, and fibre from there.

CN Charlie:

Well that was frustrating. I just finished typing my post and it all disappeared before I could hit post. I guess it was too long.
...bummer! It's one reason I do most of my posts in Word first. (the other is spellcheck!).  That way, if the system toasts my post, I've got the thing on hand to try again.
You're so right about the cost. Here a jar of beef or chicken is $1.39
...don't know about the cost of baby food, haven't looked in a whileWink [;)], but the "Baby Asprin" was mentioned at the diabetes clinic the other day. I said we cut up the 325 mg regular asprin into ¼s, and the dietician said, yes, that's a good plan because the baby asprin costs over $8 per bottle; and that it's a $ store item in the States! What a rip!

CapeJim: Did you squeeze in the hair cut today?

 Tom:

Just picked up the Farmer's Almanac, they're predicting a really COLD winter out here in SunnyCal.  They didn't say whether it would be wet or dry, though.
...I was surprised to read that the Farmer's Almanac forecast is one factor driving grain and soybean futures right now!  Hope the leg improves rapidly, can't have you cut off from layout time too long!

Lee:

The first boat I was on had a "hurricane strap" in my coffin rack.
...Let's see, an mrr and a coffin...wouldn't have been this chap would it? (been wondering how I could use that one!)

Looks like time's getting round to lunch. TTFN.

Good morning.

It's 62 and clear. Today's high should be in the mid 80's with plenty of sunshine.

Yesterday my internet service was about to drive me crazy. Up one minute, down the next, slow post times, photos loading at a snails pace. Last night it took five minutes to get a two line reply posted. This is an intermittent problem that's been ongoing for the last six months or so. Right now it's working very well so I hope the problem has been corrected. If there was a better broadband ISP in this area I'd go with them but there's not, so I'm stuck with what I have. Fiber-optics are great when the system is working right but have just one little thing go wrong and it's not worth crap.

Chamomile tea, please & thanks.

***CN Charlie, would have enjoyed giving you a hand with those boats. I would then be a wreck the following day, but it would still have been fun.

***Tom, good to hear Lowell continues doing well.

We bought two dump truck loads of topsoil (very cheap) from a major dig going on. Got most of it spread over where the log home was. After spending oodles of time picking up nails, scrap metal, melted plastic bits, glass, etc, there comes a point when a layer of dirt is the best option. Wife will plant grass seed when I've finished.

Good night all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Evening Gang: Not a whole lot on going on today. I really felt lousy after lunch so I went to bed after taking some Benadryl. I woke up around 4:30 and felt a little better. Right now I'm really feeling crummy again so I'll be heading to bed.

Good Night All

Ya know when I started this post I knew that I'd be starting a new page. Where's PPC when you need him. So have at it gang and remember that I'm sick. Yea I know in the head.

Fergie, The first boat I was on had a "hurricane strap" in my coffin rack.  I figured out what it was for in a hurry!  I also mastered the art of bringing an extra pillow, you can lay your shoulder on it and roll over until your other shoulder wedges you in the rack.

Evening all.  Another 'sunny' day out here in SunnyCal, the weatherperson on KCRA is still waxing profound over our Indian Summer weather (low 90's).  The Indians I know sure wouldn't be 'waxing' of this stuff--they're waiting for Fall--like the rest of us.

Just picked up the Farmer's Almanac, they're predicting a really COLD winter out here in SunnyCal.  They didn't say whether it would be wet or dry, though.  Wet would be nice, as in Sierra Snowpack and full reservoirs that we can ship to that other portion of the state south of the Tehachipi's to keep their swimming pools full this summer.  Do you know that 70% of the water in California is generated here in the northern part of the state and 70% of the population lives in the LA Basin?  Gives you pause, it does, LOL!

Well, knee has been stiff as a board the past couple of days, surgeon says to 'walk it off'.  I'd love to, if I could find something to hold onto, LOL.  As he told me, I'm 69 almost (this December) not 26 and I take longer to heal.  At least he didn't get the numbers reversed and tell me I'm 86, for cryin' out loud.

Lowell is doing very well--two jars of Gerbers plus whatever he can scrounge from Spooky during the day.  Kid's turned into a real EATING machine.  Evidently the one kidney's still working pretty well, and darned if he doesn't have a little more muscle tone, lately.  Still sleeps on my pillow and washes my eyebrows during the night.  He's such a sweet little fellow, I'm bound and determined to keep him as long as I can--but NOT past terminal suffering.  So far, so good.

However, the Farmer's Almanac might just be right, both cats are EXPLODING with their winter coats.  Have to brush Spooky daily right now.  I usuall end up with enough to build another cat.  Even outdoor Gizmo is bulking up--she's looking more like a cougar everyday.  Dang, hope she doesn't GROW into one--I mean, how could I explain that to the owners of missing neighborhood dogs, LOL?

Not much new on the MR, hard to stand for more than 10 minutes at a time.  Dr. says that will improve.  Yah, WHEN? (GRUMP, GRUMP  Grumpy [|(]

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Good Evening Diners!

Well that was frustrating. I just finished typing my post and it all disappeared before I could hit post. I guess it was too long.

Hurrah! I finally got the boat pulled out on Wednesday! We managed to pull 4 boats that day which is about all you can do in a day. It is a time consuming and tiring process that takes at least 3 people to do and it is better with 4 or 5. The reason for so much manpower is that the crane is stationary and has power to lift only so once the boat comes out on the slings, you have to use muscle power to swing it around and positinon it on the trailer. My boat is one of the smaller ones and it is 3 tons so you can imagine their is a lot of grunting and (sorry Phil) cursing.

Tom, glad to hear Lowell is hanging in there. Baby food must have magic properties as our Jamie is now on it at least for a food topping. You're so right about the cost. Here a jar of beef or chicken is $1.39 but he sure does like it! Really gets the old boy excited about meal times. We had him at the vets again today as he may have an ear infection or an abcessed tooth and he has to go in on Monday to get it fully checked. No wonder our vet has a new Beemer.

Garry, really like your 928. They sound great too especially if you a manual transmission and let's face it, sound is important. Have fun with that great looking car!

Terry, Glad you made it through Ike ok but it looks like you live on a canal and not a street!

Well, I better sign off as I want to listen to the rest of the debate.
