Jeff & Fergi gave me some good ideas today.  There is only one place in Ohio I can get the Rivarossi spring I need, so I'll be calling them this week to see what they have.  I went to Harbor Freight Tools today and picked up a bunch of tools for the layout, then went over to LHS and I only spent $27.  1950's billboard were on sale for $4.99 so I picked up a couple of them and some glue and stuff.  I'm painting some cabooses and working on swapping out more couplers.

Galaxy  Remember the pics I have been posting are all from Northlandz and maybe someday I can have a layout that looks as nice as it as well as what some of our Diners have. Thumbs Up [tup]Yeah!! [yeah]

Afternoon all--a nice, brisk 103 out here in SunnyCal, but believe it or not there's a breeze, so the air quality is not bad.  Unfortunately, I went out into the garage an hour ago and it was 114.  Had to open the door to breathe.  Now the garage is only 105--WHOOPEE!--and I can probably go out and do some fiddling in a couple of hours.

Was running my infamous 'Basket Case' Yellowstone yesterday, and as it went around the curve by the Champion Mine, suddenly BAM!  WHIRR!  ZZSST!  WHACK-WHACK-WHACK!  Stopped the little dear, found out that the Universal I installed when I rebuilt it had decided to self-destruct.  Well, not really, but evidently I cut the shaft just a little short, and the ball and socket decided to part company.  No problem.  Just adjusted the socket forward on the shaft, gave her a few tryouts, then put her on the track with a full load of about 20 reefers (that's what she's supposed to do, LOL!) and she went back into 'let's raise the garage door' mode.  She seems happy.  I like happy locomotives, don't you? Tongue [:P]

Lowell's had a couple of really GOOD days, eating like a horse and actually starting to GROOM himself again.  The vet's assistant (the cute one I was telling you about) said they had four cats like this, and the longest one was about three years.  So there's hope.  She said he'll have up and down days, and to just keep watching him.

Lee: That roundhouse should belong to ME, darn it!  Neat photos.

Jeff: Always wanted to do that to one of my little houses.  You inspire me.  Hm.  Just black paint and lotsa glue to warp the eaves, huh?  Dang, you're clever! Bow [bow]

Went over to the LHS to pick up some flatcars for my tanks, yesterday.  Found out that one of the VERY detailed metal tank kits I VERY painstakingly put together is GERMAN!  Whoops! Blush [:I]  Do you suppose anyone will notice?  I guess I can always say it's 'captured' and on its way to an Army base for study.  Or something like that.  And the two Shermans that I know are AUTHENTIC have treads that hang over the sides of my flatcars.  Now I have to figure how they got them on and off the flatcars to begin with.  I'm beginning to wonder if this 1944 troop train is going to be worth it, or a kind of 'let's look at it and giggle' kind of thing.  Oh well--Shock [:O]

Speaking of, back to the garage, I think it's cooled down a bit.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tall glass of lemon water please.

***Duke, anything I ever do with my layout is going to look miniscule by comparison. Wow, that is some bigtime scale modeling there.

***Tom, only claps & chears from me for that troop train, however prototypical it is or is not. I say "go for it". And good to hear your Yellowstone is happy and pulling it's share again.

Picked up an HO "Sky Wheel" carnival ride for the wife's layout this evening. Will need to find a motor for it next. She should be pleased.

Being impatient waiting for the GS-4, I pulled the 10 car Daylight set around with a Berkshire. Forgot how nice the sound of N scale wheels rolling along the tracks is. Can hardly wait to have a real layout to enjoy running trains on, not to mention having them out of their boxes where I can see them. Sure will have a lot of vintage freight car couplers to upgrade...yikes.

Talked over a couple changes to the build with our contractor today. No problem at all. Has been a quiet few days here, but they will resume work on it (bang bang bang) early in the morning.

I make the best of what I've got, which ain't much. If I spend $62 at the LHS that's 1/10th of my monthly income, so I have to be picky about what I get. The guy who runs the place knows the position I'm in and takes as much off as he can, so sometimes I can get a Proto 2000 loco for 1/2 price. I went there one day and walked out with three Athearn BB F7's and two MDC RS-3's for less than $50!

I see lots of *inexpensive* locos I'd like to have but they don't have DCC, and I don't know how to convert the *cheapies* into DCC...I'd fry something for sure! And Proto's say they are "DCC ready" which I understand can simply mean the weight has been modified for a decoder to be installed...hard wired in that is, and that is what a non-electronic person like me can't do...

NUTZ!

Hard-wiring a decoder is drop-dead easy after you do the first one. I've done almost a dozen and lost only one decoder. It was a Bachmann El-Cheapo so nothing lost there.

Evening, Chloe. Yeah, it is good to finally get out from behind the dishwashing sink...Sheesh - some Diners can really eat when I'm buying. Shock [:O] Ah, well, could've been worse (at least PC was here only briefly and we weren't having an AYCE piefest...).Wink [;)] I'll have a cup of hot cocoa for myself, please.

Thanks! Smile [:)]

BridgeTom, that roundhouse that Duke posted the pic of, might actually have room enough for all your articulateds (and the ones you want to buy, but haven't - yet!). I didn't even try to count all those stalls, there are so many.Wow!! [wow] I do believe Northlandz can make you drool faster than anything except maybe a new articulated at your LHS, right? Wink [;)] Good to hear Lowell's up to his more usual appetite (and how're things with the cute vet's assistant and you? Mmmm...?)Whistling [:-^]  I'd agree with Rob about the troop train - whatever you think looks good, it's your layout, so you can do as you dang well please. Yeah!! [yeah] I think I once saw a picture of a tank on a flat car, and I think the treads did hang a little bit over the edges...

Jeff, when you have a LHS owner like that who treats you right, I can see why you go there all the chances you get. Thumbs Up [tup] That's a good 'special' on the Athearns and the RS3's, too. Big Smile [:D]

TrainsRMe1, I asked Chloe if they could move all the cold stuff over to the second freezer tonight and let you sleep in the (now) empty cooler to cool off. That's brutal weather you have there. Are you doing like some of us in the Midwest do in the summer - living in the basement for the summer (or is your 'puter on the 2nd floor)?

Lee, which billboard(s) did you get? I've been accumulating some Bar Mills ones (that they've stopped making) from various dealers, so now I'm having to figure "How many billboards is too many?" That, or I'll have to build a bigger layout than I'd planned, just to have places for them all. I guess for me, billboards are like articulateds are to Tom...Cool [8D]

Speaking of LHS'es, today I picked up a 50' Santa Fe flatcar kit (BB), a RTR Atlas Cotton Belt PS-2003 covered hopper, and the Walthers track scale buildings kit, all on sale, totalled a bit above $42 or $43 with taxes. Haven't double-checked the number on the covered hopper yet, so I hope I didn't duplicate a road number. I also this afternoon noticed that one 50' SP boxcar that I already had, had too late of a date on it. But when I checked the RR Register for its number, the number was in there for the 1953 listings as another type of boxcar. I think I'll change one of the numbers in its road number, and backdate the build/rework year.

Well, I'll get back to my hot cocoa now. It's seemed like we haven't had as many Diners with major health things lately, so that's good.  Prayers continue for the other concerns, and for the house building projects underway.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Some old Athearns have a copper top thingy, Digitrax sells a decoder with one of those on it already. Used it (by that I mean, Dad, the electric guy with patience) and we like it.

Jim, Tom, and people who care: I counted 18 stalls. Figure qabout 40 full circle. Almosty big enough for me.

Picked up another IHC carnival item for the wife a few minutes ago. This one is a set of consession stands: The Frog Pond , The Ring a Bottle and The Kentucky Derby. My train funds are getting low again. Will need to sell something soon. Least I could do for the wife, considering what I recently got myself.Whistling [:-^]

Good morning.

It's 75, cloudy and raining here in the Sportsman's Paradise. The high is expected to be in the upper 80's with, you guessed it, more rain.

Yesterday I went to mow my parents yard and had to stop just after I started. One of the blades hit a big root and got bent to about 20 or 25 degrees which did a pretty good job of digging up the ground but wasn't any good for cutting grass. Had to go to Lowe's to get a new one. Now you know they just won't sell you one blade. You have to buy the set. So now I have a couple of spares. Getting the blade was what took the longest. Taking the bent one off and putting the new one on took only 15 minutes. I finally got their big yard cut, finishing 4 hours after I started. I got a little computer time after that then had to get ready to go out to dinner with my sister and my parents. Yesterday was my sister's 53rd birthday so it was a special occasion. She didn't want any special cake or anything that would call undue attention. Well, she got torpedoed on that. Her birthday cake was 24 cupcakes with 53 candles.

Good morning all,

Tom the military train sounds cool.

If you guys ever decide to put used items up for reassignment, HO or N scale shoot me an email.  I live between NMRA Divisions 4 &5, N scale and HO I might be able to find a road to put it on.

I might journey to the not so local hobby store today to look at back drop buildings and pick up some micro paint brushes.  I want to build a chocolate factory and a food canning industry on the north side of the layout.

GMT, those cabooses you gave me are getting a makeover this weekend; new couplers, fresh paint and some LS&W heralds.

Jeff tell your sister happy birthday from us.

Morning all!

Well, it's supposed to be just beautiful out this weekend!  Low humidity, nice sunny days........

You really can't ask for more!

Colby, Nope, the layout continues to be at a standstill.  Life keeps getting in the way.  Working more has allowed me to make some purchases that will make nice projects this winter though (if time allows).

Afternoon All: I just got back from the National Museum of the Viet Nam War. Well the place where it will be built. They put a Huey on a high mount at the entrance. It turned out the the Huey was once with the company that I was flying with some 42 years ago. Three of the guys that were in the company were also ther so we had a mini reunion. All went well untill they went to start athe crane to lift the Huey into place. The crane wouldn't start. A bunch of the guys were all but tearing the engine apart when someone looked in the cab and found that someone had put the transmission in drive. Dhooooo. Anyway the crain started and everything ent as planned after that. Say does the fact that an aircraft that I flew is now a museum piece mean that I am also? Excuse me I feel old and should lie down.

The No 1 granddaughter is 12yrs old today so a party is in order shortly. Tonight we are running at the track so I may really take a nap.

See you all later.

Afternoon all--

Just got Lowell back from his 'daily dose' (and no, the cute assistant wasn't there today) and the Vet's wife was on duty today (she's also a Vet:  How they met is quite a story in itself) and was very pleased at how 'perky' the little fellow was.  "What's he eating?"  "Gerbers baby food and Norwegian sardines,"  I said.  "In OIL?"  "No, water."  She breathed a sigh of relief.  Lowell muttered, anxious to get home and bury his nose in said sardines.  I can't STAND those things, and he's going through them like a bulldozer.  Hey, whatever works!  Tongue [:P]

Leah, my choral director at school and her boy-friend came over a couple of hours ago, she wanted to go over this semester's repertoire with me.  Her boyfriend is a pretty neat guy, but he's kind of a 'rivet-counter'--especially for a non-model railroader-- and as I was showing them what I'd accomplished this summer on the MR, he looked at my new canoes on Bullard's Bar Lake and told me that the two kids fishing from one of them would probably tip it over in real life.  I grinned, told him I'd been canoeing since I was 12 and had never tipped one over in my life, fishing or not.  Leah just laughed and told her boyfriend that he'd been watching LAST OF THE MOHICANS too much, LOL!

Was over at the LHS yesterday, and Bruce told me my Z-6 should be in sometime in October.  Getting ITCHY!  He also showed me train show photos of the new Genesis Espee MT-4 Mountain, which is going to have a separate snap-on Espee Skyline Casing.  Which looks really cool to me.  I already have an MT-4 (brass Balboa), but I sure could use a Skyline Casing for the MT-2 that I've kinda-sorta kitbashed from a Spectrum Heavy Mountain.  Hopefully, Genesis will offer the casing separately.

Is there ever an END to MR projects? Shock [:O]

Nice day today, it's cooled down to the mid '90's--which considering what it's been like this past week is like an early Fall.  Going to spend the afternoon out on the MR, see what kind of trouble I can get into.  I've got so darned many half-done projects that I think I'll just run trains, today.  Blush [:I]  But I've got to remember to quit a little early this evening to see if our boy Michael wins his 8th Gold Medal.  That one yesterday was a REAL heart-stopper!  I still say he was born with gills.

Have a great day, everyone.  Prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile [:D]

NO YOU DIDN'T SAY THAT, AARGH, THAT MEANS I'LL HAVE TO GET ONE!!! Or at least the skyline casing for my kitbashing project on my spectrum mountain... Wait, You're doing the same thing? Wow, great minds think alike. I was going to make my 4367 into 4388, the only MT-2 with a vandy tender (It's original got smashed) Just so you know, the MT-2s had Elesco smokebox mountain water heater systems... The yardbirds have a decent kit for one.

Anyways, Guess what I did for the last half hour? I looked for a little screw that holds the pilot on my challenger... It decided to fall off. I found it where I put the challenger hiding between ties... Knock on wood...

And, the cowboys are playing tonight at 6 pacific time, against the broncos on CW 11... Yeeahaw! Can't wait for that.

Today is an interesting day. For sure.

refill, please & thanks. Tomorrow I will be down to 1 cup for the day.

***Paul, if you feel "that old" and wish to become part of that neat monument, you could always look into freeze drying yourself. However, we would rather have you around for a long time yet. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

***Tom, glad Lowell is doing well. The last time I was in a canoe was for a five day trip down the Colorado river. Was a wonderful experience. Love canoes, kayaks, rafts, etc..., at least when I was still healthy enough to enjoy them.

After the work crew left, I re-routed the dryer vent ducting through a hole I cut into the space for the future door (between the train room and workshop). I see no reason to start driving into town to use a laundry mat for an unknown period of time. Not sure what to do with the water vent pipe, that was used for the washer & kitchen sink. It got cut off and sealed, too. Looks like the build will be far enough along to bring in the electrician and plumber in the next week or so. The plumber can fix whatever needs fixing at that time.

Going to go rest awhile. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

SoapBox [soapbox] Well, I had just spent at least 30 minutes writing my post and went to send it, and Panera's lovely (recently revised) WiFi takes me to their login again (and loses its place, so I wasted all that time). Am I going to have to resort to composing with another program, and then go through copy-and-paste and check the post again in the forum's software? Sheesh! It was a good day here until that happened. I think I'll go sulk in the window booth for now...

Jerry get some rest, I'm glad you're feeling better.

Jeff, that's something about the lawnmower blade.

Paul, that's something special about the helo and the museum.

I made it to the NSLHS today after dropping off 1400 pounds of pea gravel at my house and my GF's.  The backdrop building "Plant #4" is on sale this month only $19. So I bought:

Plant No. 4 933-3183

Commissary/Freight transfer building 933-3173

Background 949-711 (Freight Yard) and 949-713 (The Docks)

I hope to convert 933-3173 as a cannery-food packing plant and No.4 as part of the candy factory.  So I think I'm good on projects for a while.  I have the 8 cabooses finished and waiting for the clear coat to dry.
