Hello Folks: I'm on completely 1:1 scale train-less Prince Edward Island for a brief vacation with Kris and her mom (92 next month). We are however not Diner-less, as just up thte road from our motel is a genuine inpbusiness-since the-50s Starlite Diner. This evening Kris had the Little Richie dinner, and I had the Big Bopper. They were outstanding! Unfortunately the Juke Box was down for repair, but otherwise all was authentic. the prices didn't match Tippon Bill's daily offering of course, but that would be too much to ask! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/wetidlerjr/Diner/menu_breakfast_1.jpg We took some pics, but they are on 35 mm film since we left the digital camera at home, and had to get a throw away at the gas station next to the Diner (Ellen wants photos to send to friends too)
Jeff:
Taking the bent one off and putting the new one on took only 15 minutes.

Colby, Nope, the layout continues to be at a standstill. Life keeps getting in the way.
I'll say goodnight then, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort or peace.

Holy Cow, I'm doing the same THING!! #4388, the only MT-2 with the semi-Vandy tender (actually, I think it's called an SP-1 or a semi-Hinkle, or something like that). Got the stack and domes from PSC, along with the Elesco. Got it almost finished, but it sure needs a skyline casing--so I hope that Genesis comes out with a separate casting and one that I can adapt to that doggone Elesco! I've got a photograph of her up at Norden near Donner Pass (how she got up there is beyond me) and with the Skyline and the Elesco, she looks as if she's got the world's biggest 'cowlick,' LOL. Had a Devil of a time trying to mount the pump right above the cylinder on the engineer's side, finally gave up and mounted it back toward the firebox.
Yah, well--I guess Great Minds DO Think Alike, my friend. I don't know about you, but that Spectrum of mine sure hauls a BOATLOAD of cars! Nice loco. If mine works out, I'll have one each of the MT's except the MT-1. Actually, my favorite of the classes is still my Balboa brass MT-4, it seems to be the one where everything came together RIGHT. I know Espee sure liked them. But even being primarily a Rio Grande man, I think that Espee had the handsomest 4-8-2's of almost any railroad I've yet seen.

IGood evening from the land of the Sore and bruised. I'll take a glas sof milk and some rtoom to do some homework. Seven days now I;ve done the Fairtrain. I come home and hurt, every part of the body aches from all the rocking and standing. And yet, I still have the big goofy grin from Day 1 just thinking about the next day. This is where I should be. So today we had boyscouts helping wth the strollers (OH THANK GOD but there late) And I met one who is also wanting to get into railroading. After I realized I was in his way of doing what I wanted to be doing, I handed him my hat and turned over the car to him. We may have a new car attendant next year I suspect. Went to the fair today for an hour and a half. Had a good BBQ Puleld Pork sabndwhich, and some Icecream. One opf the boothes jhas a G scale on top of it, and Butler University has a Garden they set up. With a garden Railway. Yep, it's puleld by an SP. Pics later when I get te algebra done. Good day gang!
Paul - the gondolas behind that flatcar were full with old ties, so my guess is that the excavator was on top of the cars loading them w/ the old used ties. Not sure where they came from, but I do know that over the last year or so, CSX has been laying new track and ties in the yard here.
Tom - Glad to hear that Lowell is doing fine!
Galaxy - So, that's CP's yard that I see off to the west of 81 near Conklin when I go to PA? Hmm....

Afternoon, Flo - just a root beer float, please.
Thanks.
First off, Diners, it is my daughter's (27th, but who's counting...) today, so a tip of the mug to her. I'll be going over after supper this evening to see her and her family. Talked with her a little on the phone a few minutes ago. They were out for dinner.
I've cooled down since last night's WiFi fiasco (and wrote Panera my email of 'appreciation' for their connection's annoying habit). This time, I'll be saving the text of my post before I try to send it... [Edit]: of course, since I did that, no problems. Mr. Murphy again?
Tom, your and Flashwave's talking about steam engines got me thinking about the Mikado I still want for my layout (okay, maybe a little lusting after it, too). I've had a search going on the 'Bay for the Athearn Genesis Mikado (and results sent to me via email daily), but got interested also when I noticed (while I was putting together my order at Dallas Model Works) a BLI USRA Light Mikado that they are taking advance reservations on. Haven't seen the price yet.
Oh, I did notice in an email from BLI/Factory Direct Trains, that they have a (bit pricey for me) Woodland Scenics Built-&-Ready factory on special. Called American Metals, and it looks kind of like their Barrel Factory, but with an Imex flatbed-and-stakes truck and their Loading Dock figures. The factory building is a lot like the Lauble Linen Mill kit (and I have one of those, plus one assembled), and I already have the dock figures plus a Classic Metal Works truck and a GC Laser kit for a stakebed back for that. , looks like another project!
Rob, sending you an email on your question with some (partial) answers. Let me know if you have other questions.
Jerry, hope you get all rested up so you can enjoy the grandkids tonight. Paul, you probably are resting up from being with your grandchild last night.
Tom, sounds like Lowell could be around for a while yet (if he doesn't eat you out of house and home with the sardine and Gerber's bills )
JP, are those all house open houses today? Talk about a marathon! Best wishes on seeing something that meets your needs (and is within your budget).
Luc, thanks for posting that 50's menu - just the prices I needed to set up a sandwich board out front of my diner when I get it built! Just the right time period, too!
Yesterday I went by the 'down-the-road' LHS, and got another Santa Fe 50' flatcar, the Walthers track scales kit, and another freight car (that I can't recall now - should've taken my pre-ORF nap, I guess...). Got an email today from the MRR club member/LHS owner, that he has a backordered DPM modular walls kit in. I don't even recall ordering DPM modular stuff for some months, and had given up and bought several of the wall kits off the 'Bay since then. Wish Walthers could get their backorders in a bit quicker than this. I may have to go back to cancelling my backorders if they take more than a couple or three weeks to refill.
Ironic/humorous side note - when I was talking with daughter on the phone today, she said "Guess what?" She said my ex-fiance (from, let's see, 12 to 14 years ago, I guess) will be working in one of the same buildings Sarah will work in this next school year. From what Sarah said was the woman's current last name, apparently she's married a third time. Wonder what the ex-fiance's reaction will be when she realizes who Sarah is? Life can be funny (weird) at times.
This afternoon, our church has rented out the recreation center at our local university for a 'Family Day' from 4 to 7 p.m., with full use of their pool (which has a zip line on it), climbing wall, volleyball courts, etc. and it's only $2 for single persons, $5 for families. That includes sodas, chips and pizza. I'll probably pass on the climbing wall, but the volleyball sounds good to me...
I'll sit a spell with my RBF. Don't want to fill up before the pizzas, chips and sodas.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Evening folks.
I'm having a BLOT tonight.
That's a BLT with Onion in the middle!
These days anything I eat will have a tomato in there somewhere!
Franken-mato the second (the big juicy ones not the grapes from the massive single grape tomato plant) is giving us lots of babies, too. Softball sized giants.
Seems quiet in here tonight.
Regardless of what the timer here says, this is being posted about 9pm EDT Sunday night.
Rest well, tonight guys- tomorrow is another week.

Goodness, Flo - where's everybody been? No new posts since I posted a bit after 2:20 p.m. and nobody's been in the Diner (okay, now it looks like Galaxy's here), and - surprisingly - we're still on page one! The Diner and forums didn't get caught in a time warp for the afternoon, did it? I'll have a brownie sundae with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, please.
Thanks!
The church thing at the recreation center was fun. I am not the volleyball player I used to be (found myself losing where the ball was in the overhead lights), but did work up a fair sweat with three or so games of that (and a game of washers. For those of you not familiar with 'washer pitching', as Wikipedia calls it, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washer_pitching
Also (after washing up some, not-to-be-confused-with-the-above) stopped by my daughter & son-in-law's to wish her a happy birthday (and to get to play with my wonderful grandson! Me, proud of him? Nah...) Got a longer chance to talk and visit than last time, which was very enjoyable.
Question for you Diners who are further along on your layout than myself: do any of you have signals on your layout, and if so, what kind/type/brand are you using (2-light, Pennsy style like Atlas came out with, semaphores, or something else, and what brands)? I'm inclined (partly due to sometime long ago having one 2-light signal sort of like one of these that Walthers carries from NJ International) to something like this:
http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/525-1083
although I do like the look of semaphores and could plausibly make an excuse for one like this (also by NJ International and also carried by Walthers):
http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/525-1010
But I'm not locked into NJ International, if someone can tell me about another good brand in those kinds of styles of signals.
Flo, how about a cup of decaf, too, please? Thanks!
Evening all--
GORGEOUS day out here in SunnyCal--only hit the high '80's and we had our refreshing Delta breeze and the air was nice and clear. Evidently the SUV'ers stayed home, LOL! Woke up this morning to a Lowell who was standing on my chest and meowing about his sardines! He knew that this was the one day of the week he didn't need to go over and get 'cat dylaisis'. Anyway, he had a fairly good day.
Played a Family Retreat Mass over at the local Catholic Retreat center this noon, it was one of those Masses where no matter WHAT was on the Liturgy sheet, everything got mixed up. It was one of those 'seat of the pants' Masses where I spent more time searching for last-minute 'substituted' music than playing what was supposed to be on the program--actually, it was the Music Director suddenly deciding to play it by ear. I love her dearly, but she can get a little 'flaky' at times. Somehow it all rolled together. Afterwards, the Priest--Father David, who was as confused as I was, came up and grinned and said, "Wow, we survived ANOTHER one." He's a kick.
Well, Phelps did his bit, last night. Stayed up to watch it and thrashed up and down off of the couch, yelling like crazy. Oboy, that relay team had me going for a while--but when he made that turn in his Butterfly, I knew everything was going to be all right. We had an interesting discussion about him at lunch after Mass--as in how can he do what he does with such SHORT legs? I told them that we have a 6'2" swimmer on our high school team that is ALL torso--his name is Riley Shanahan, and he's one of my best basses in choir--and he just SLAMS through his races because it seems to be all arms and feet. And like Phelps, this kid has feet the size of flippers, LOL! I'm still shaking my head about Phelps. And the kid is such a KLUTZ out of water--I mean, he fractured his wrist getting into a buddy's car, early this spring. Kind of like my student Riley--I always wonder how he's going to make it to his desk without destroying the entire room, but in the pool, he's jaw-dropping. And when he opens his mouth in choir, he just blows me out of the room. Beautiful voice, I think it comes from his knee-caps, LOL. He's always joking with me. "Was that a MANLY sound, Doc?"
Well, as a swimmer in my youth, the Olympics are kinda-sorta over for me, so now I'll get back to the MR. Mom was scheduled to come down this week, but I haven't heard, yet. Probably because I informed my sister that with Lowell as he is right now, Mom cannot be the center of attention. Might have hit a nerve, there-- We'll see.
Working on the troop train--can't get the darned Shermans to stay on the flatcars. I've been using that WS stuff that I use to mount people on sidewalks, but it doesn't want to seem to work on the tank-treads. I don't want to CA the tanks to the cars, because I'd like to change out loads when I want, but right now, they just slide around and grin at me. Which is weird, because the other vehicles--Jeeps, trucks and howitzers--I've mounted just stay where they're put. Anyone got any ideas? The tanks are resin kits, BTW. Wonder if that has anything to do with it? Oh well, I'll try and figure out something. Just don't want one of those Shermans sliding off on a curve and fouling a tunnel, LOL!
Mark: I'll try and post a photo of the MT-2 for you--it's in a book buried somewhere. And I'll get an 'in progress' photo of the Spectrum, too. I still have to mount a proper Espee headlight, which will have to be drilled out to accept the Spectrum lens, and it will also have to be mounted low-center, a-la Espee, so that should be a fun project. And the more I look at it, the more I think that the PSC Elesco casting I got for the smoke-box top is TOO BIG. I may have to get another casting from Cal-Scale that is a little smaller. But gee, it sure runs nice!
Well, have to feed Lowell and then myself. Best to all, prayers to those in need. And lets hope that the storm moving into the Gulf Coast stays just that--a storm and not a hurricane.

PS, Jim:
Just caught your post on signals. I have operating (manual) signals on the Yuba River Sub, and a lot of them are the two-light semaphores, from NJ International. I'm very prone to semaphores, and they work well for my particular time-frame. Now I don't know whether or not NJ has improved their semaphores, but when I bought mine, they operated with a brass relay that was set into the tracks--the approaching locomotive would set them when the wheels pressed the relay to the rails. Unfortunately, they would 'flip' so fast, that after a while, the screws came loose on the blades, and the blades would fly out over the layout. I finally disengaged the relays and just used them as lit 'dummies'. But as far as sturdy signals, NJ International really makes some good ones. I'd like to re-do my semaphores to automatic operating condition, but I don't know if NJ has re-done their mechanism to allow a more realistic raising and lowering of the blades.
Here's two of my NJ semaphores on Yuba Pass on the Dark Canyon bridge. I like them a lot, but I have to reach my finger down and adjust them every time a train rolls by:

And on top of that we are to expect a winter like rain and wind strom Tuesday night into Wednesday morning!! Man, from one exrteme to another! Evening Gang: Well today we drove 70 miles to an Ikea store. The daughter and her husband needed to get some things for the new house. As for me I should have stayed home. I got a new clamp on goose neck light for my drafting board and that was the only thing saw that I needed.
Last night we ran a few trains over at the live steam track. It was fairly cool and raining alittle off and on. I got my diesel out and made a run. It did all right once it got warmed up. I had to stop in the first town and pick up a string of freight cars that the steam train in front of me had dropped off. It seems the wheels on one or more of the cars were not rolling freely. I took them in tow and headed for the far loop. That is the first time I have ever had to add throttle going down hill.
Rob thanks for wanting me around for awhile. Sometimes I feel like a museum piece.
Tom I had a thought about those tanks of yours being too wide for the flat cars. Maybe they are in 1/72 scale? The Sherman was desinged to loading gauges for the roads and railroads. They were 8ft wide if I remember right. I'll look it up tomorrow if I can find my books. I checked Google and it was 8ft. 7in. wide, 19ft 2in long, and 9ft high.
Well I'm going to hit the sack.
Good Night All
Tall glass of lemon water, thanks.
I snuck in one more purchase on the bay tonight, for the wife. Thought they looked pretty neat and I'm sure she will get a kick out of the rocking horse.
Have a nice night all.
Good morning all,
Tom, Walter's has/had a sale on HO-scale WWII military vehicles for your flat car loads.
Rob, how are those couplers coming along? Nice figures.
The weekend was eventful on the MR front. Almost finished with an IHC switch tower, I think my color combination came out really well; pictures to come soon. I started on a scratch built rotary dumper for the power plant and finished a billboard for Northern Light and Power. I finished painting and decaling 7 cabooses. Still working on swapping out couplers and decaling gondolas, and I'm not looking forward to the coupler swap on those Bachman gondolas, everything is held in place by screws.

Tom: I'm not familiar with the NJ's, however I've started to stockpile the Tomars and they are a very nice Semaphore indeed! Unfortunately they come in at about $25 each and the Tortoise control systems can cost you upwards to $45 I'm now trying to figure a way to control without the $$$. (btw there's a B&O S-1a 2-10-2 on ebay right now)
Dick! Where are ya... Must be hiding after the Trouncing Toronto gave the Red Sox (Who's yore Daddy Now!)
