Modelling AT&SF in the 90s
Good Evening, Janie! I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, please. Thanks!
Dick, that's great news on the expansion of your RR's domain! Remind me, what scale do you model (HO, wasn't it)? What are your ideas for the layout design (currently, I read your topic on your difficulties fitting everything you wanted in)? Do you want a fair amount of switching, mainline runs, interesting for multiple operators, and/or....? That height difference should be 'fun' for doing the benchwork, but as you said, possibilities for a mountain line, or a logging branch line off your main RR.
Rob, that's a great deal for Samantha - of course, she'll be a bit busy for the summer, but after that.. How'd you do on your auctions, when it all was done? Hopefully the Big Boy fund is about topped off now!
Sue, when can we expect to see your mini-clinic (with drawings and photos and directions, uh, huh!)? That's a mighty fine scratchbuild stock pen.
Lee, you have been one busy tracklayer the last several days. What's your secret?
Garry, I already was planning on a trip to Chuck's Depot, so seeing his layout (rather large one at that) will be icing on the cake. I'll let you know ahead of time once I get my weekend figured, and maybe we can meet there.
Jeff, good to hear from OzJim, - tell him Hi! from us in that other forum, please. I'm not superstitious - but if I had a loco that gave me as much trouble as your #666 has, it would've been out the door already...
RRNut, those pics of your shield brought back some way old memories of some 'sword & sandal' movies one TV station used to always run on Sunday afternoons (Ben Hur, Spartacus, etc.). Nice job on the shield, by the way.
Got some work done on my 'downsized' Robert Printing Co. building this afternoon. Here're a coupld of pics (used the cell phone, so quality isn't that great):
That is an angled front view (the walls are inside the magnetic gluing jig). And this one is the back side (which won't likely be visible once the building's done and in place (backdrop will block the back view):
That, and some fiddlin' around with layout designs on the 'puter, are about all I've been doing this weekend. I did find a lot of detail parts, and inventoried my stock of Bar Mills billboards, so if I find any at train shows I don't get duplicate ones. The detail parts included some power meters, package of industrial power heads (220 v.), a set of outside plumbing pipes (like when the drain pipes are outside - the way some older buildings in warmer climates would do), and various detail parts for detailing my Athearn SW-7 (into an SW1200).
Getting cold here tonight, about 35 F (and some snow/rain mix at times). Wish this weather would get rid of these hiccups and start heading for spring and summer!
They had a piece on a train show at Carterville on this evening's news - and they just said it was the Southern Illinois club's train show! Hey, Garry, if I'd have known, I could've looked for you!
Well, time for me to head for bed and catch some sleep. See everyone in the a.m. Gav, how're your 'wee ones' behaving themselves this weekend? Hopefully no major nasties...
Blessings on your week,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Hello ....
The 3 of us (Gus, Dan, and I) had a great trip to southern IL this morning. The train show in Cartersville was great. That town is very close to Marion where Chuck's Depot is located. We spent a lot of time in the basement of Chuck's Depot where he has a layout measuring about 65 feet by about 35 feet. I took pictures standing in the middle of the room.
What do you think of the big bridges and the neat rock quarry?
At the train show I picked up a few goodies but not a lot.

Good evening, Chloe. I will have a root beer float, please. I bet Jim will be in for one soon.
Dick, Thanks for your kind words. I have not heard you talk about bowling lately? You haven't teased me about White Cascades either.
Sue
Hi Sue, Bowling is down to the last night, tomorrow night in fact, we are in 4th place of 8 teams, so MRR money is on the line tomorrow night for final positions. No, I haven't harrassed you about " White Cascade " lately, I figured you were too busy to read it, but I know one thing, once you start to read it, you won't be able to put the book down, what a horrific accident and experience those people went through.
JIM: I model HO. I think I had better complete the 1st train room layout before the wife thinks I've lost it ....shhhhhhh , she doesn't know it yet.
GARRY: What a layout that is, and that is the biggest quarry that I have seen in a layout, it looks like a diamond mine in northern Saskatchawan!
JEFF: Ok, we can expect the new locos to be in that color scheme by Wednesday right ?
ED/JP: The sox beat the Yanks again!! But there is sad news...somebody ratted on the construction worker who buried an Ortiz shirt under the cement floor of the new Yankees stadium. Can you believe that the construction gang went back there today and jack hammered up the floor in the area where this guy worked and found the shirt about 1 foot down??? !!!! The shirt is going back to Boston and is going to be auctioned off for Jimmy Fund for children's cancer.
Time for bed goodnight John, Luc and Fergie ...wherever you are!!!

Anyway time to rake the yard today.

Temperatures will finally begin to warm back up this week however it will still be cool during the morning hours. Partly cloudy skies will move in this afternoon while the temperatures try to recover after a chilly weekend topping out today in the lower 50's. Clear skies will be around tonight with calm winds and therefore a FREEZE WATCH is in effect through Tuesday morning with temperatures dropping to around 30°. The warmup begins Tuesday afternoon and lasts through the end of the week with temperatures staying at or above average in the mid 60's to lower 70's with mostly sunny skies.
Joke for today
A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely.
After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how he had done it. "I knew it had to be the Microsoft Building, because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer."

Morning all!
Just popping in before I head out this morning.
Gotta take my son and wife to the doc's later today. They're going to take my son's casts off and have a look see, then measure him for the custom leg braces he'll need, then cast him back up for 4 more weeks. As for the wife, maybe they'll give her the OK to start walking again. Who knows.
Oh well, gotta run!

***Jim, look forward to seeing how you finish the Roberts Printing building. As for my Bigboy fund, it is good to go/aquire. But before I have buyers remorse (not likely with trains), with such a small layout, I keep wondering if I would be better off forgoing the Bigboy with sound effects and instead look at picking up both an Atlas Shay and Proto 0-8-0 or a Kato GS4 & some Daylight cars for it??? Really need to go see a Bigboy in person first. Planning on a trip to that 4Nscale hobby shop this week and see if they have one to show.
***Garry, all I can say about Chuck's Depot is WOW. Sure is a LOT of area to finish.
***Fergie, is that XXXtra Hot stuff what Rangers carry around in bear country?
***RT, OUCH!
Need to start boxing up trains and hit the PO later today. Fire Weather Advisory & a Freeze Watch went up today. There is a chill inthe air. Will need to put out more hay tonight for sure.
Rob
Good morning,
Took a week off work to catch up on the layout, I earn 2.5 days a month and I need to be below 60 days on the books before my transfer since I'll be in school most of the first 6 months.
Sue, no I didn't miss that post I thought baiting you out with coffee and pie would work, now I'll have to think of something better, LOL!
PC good luck today with the trips to the doctor's, I hope everything turns out in your favor.
RT, yea that is a pain in the neck, the last time I PAID someone to do my taxes he transposed my kids SSN's and that promptly got me audited then he helped me through the audit for free and her transposed the last 4 numbers in the kids SSN. That was it, been doing them on my own for a while now. This spring I did go through Taxslayer because it was free and I'm pretty happy with their service.
Jeff, nice roundhouse pics.
Garry, thanks for sharing those pictures, very cool quarry he has there.
Well I painted the Styrofoam for the ash pits and the lift out section for the duck under already this morning. I hope to drive the golden spikes into the mains by tonight. Then it will be time to solder the leader wires onto the tracks.

Oh yeah, we got a nice 69* or so. We went over to my grandma's house and played outside with my uncle's two german shepherds.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a cup of the TH, please,
and I brought a couple of boxes of cinnamon rolls, if anyone's interested...
Yep, Zoe, the second box is the sugar-free ones. Yummy!
We got colder weather, a bit cooler than you did, Jeff. Supposed to reach almost 50 F today for our high temp, and then drop into the 20's tonight in some places! Crazy weather... Someone must not have sent the memo informing Mother Nature that it's spring.
Rob, I'm sure Sue would agree with you that a Shay could be a good choice for your engines. Nice thing would be, they wouldn't likely have problems with a smaller layout's curves (and their radius). Good to hear that your auctions totalled up sufficient funds, and good luck with your trip to the 4Nscale LHS and checking out a Big Boy live.
PC, best wishes on your son's and your wife's Dr.'s visits today. Hope she gets the go-ahead on graduating from the wheelchair, too.
Garry, thanks for posting the pics of Chuck's layout. That is one large layout (and quarry)! So, how well-stocked is Chuck's? I understand from some of our MRR club members that Chuck stocks things about from floor to ceiling (and then some)...
Dick, I take it you don't know that Yankees stadium worker personally? You didn't have a hand in burying that shirt?
RT, hang in there - I believe that job will be good (once you get there). All I have to say on your tax return is OUCH!! I've been using TurboTax (either online or buying the software) for the past several years with good results on my returns. Depending on your tax situation, the free e-file places might be worth looking at for next year's return. For next year, go to the IRS' main page and look for a link that says something like "Free file" or e-file. If you go through the IRS' link (rather than direct), you can get the free e-file option.
Jerry, that magnetic jig is one I got as a gift, and I'm pretty sure that Micro Mark and others sell it, though if you knew someone who works with sheet metal, it wouldn't be hard to have them make it (just get a bunch of square magnet pieces to go with it). I'll post pics of the jig tonight or tomorrow.
Inch, good joke (and accurate...)! Bet it got cold up your way last night (and tonight as well).
I'll be getting to my cinnamon roll now. Hope everyone has a great week. Me, I have to pick up two more kits that came in (the J.Frost Ice and Storage, and the Central Gas Supply). Let's see, that pushes me to 38? structure kits to put together... Better get working, huh?
Blessings,
Good Afternoon All,
I know it's after lunch, but those cinamon rolls look just too tempting to pass up. And a coffee while we're about it please.
Pocono was a bust. One holed piston and a broken gearbox to show for it and we then packed up and left tail between our legs. Hopefully Savannah went better as I hadn't heard and usually that's either really good or really bad.
Did get a couple of more minutes in paving roads on the layout so we'll see how that looks once it all dries. Oh and i made a quick stop at the museum to fix the brakes on the 44 tonner so it would move (water drain valve on the brake reservoir broke off and dumped all the air).
Nice pics this weekend - keep it up.
PC - sounds like your son should be another week or so before he touches ground again. From what little you've said here, he's very much deserving fo the recognition. Hope the visit to the doc goes well for both your charges.
Inch - I love those jokes you come up with - and too true as well.
Jerry - more good progress on the layout, hope everything on the home front is going all right also.
Jeff - actually the tracks off the turntable look a lot like ours at the museum. There has been so much deterioration under the leads that half of them lean now.
Well - gotta go get back to it, I'll try to check in again later. CUL, J.R.
Good afternoon everyone !!! Chilly here today under PC skies and 46F. Yes, I agree with all you guys, it WILL be cold tonight, we have frost warnings also, as radiational cooling will allow the temp to hit about 24F by dawn tomorrow.
JIM: What shirt??? Ohhh, the one that was just dug up in the NEW Yankees Stadium? All I can say is, the guy lives south of the Rio Grande River......as Sgt. Schultz used to say, " I know nothiiiinnnnnnnnggggggggg ". That's my story and I'm stickin to it!!
SUE: Did you get the book "White Cascade" yet?
PC: That is good news for the little guy Philip, and I'm sure that you guys will all be walking the sands of the beach real soon.
FERGIE: Good Lord what is that odor!!!!!! Who brought that Tabasco sauce quart bottle over to this table.? Did Fergie use half the bottle on his lunch?? Holy cow how can he eat that stuff, that will kill an Elephant !!!!!!
JEFF: I see you haven't repainted your locos the new KCS scheme yet, how come?
MIKE: Get your tractor ready, planting time is almost here. Have you done your maintenance yet? Try those new spark plugs with the forged electrodes that are supposed to be non fouling and fire hotter.
RT: OUCH !!!!!! Man it really hurts to have to take out IRA money early doesn't it?
Time to get back to work, see you guys at supper,

Hello ...
Grandpa Jim asked: "Garry, thanks for posting the pics of Chuck's layout. That is one large layout (and quarry)! So, how well-stocked is Chuck's? I understand from some of our MRR club members that Chuck stocks things about from floor to ceiling ....."
Yes, Jim, he has great selection.... Reminds me..... If Paul is still looking fomr MILW Erie Builts, Chuck's Depot has two of them in stock. Phone him; he does mail order.
JR :....... Sorry to learn Pocono was a bust......
RT ..... We've had an open issue with the IRS for over a year. The IRS adds a new demension to the word, "inefficient"... Our taxes were correct, but a computer glitch by the stock broker firm sent some bad info to IRS and caused two errors. After a few months that include corrections from the stock broker, the IRS corrected one of the two errors. They had the data and corrected forms from the stock broker to resolve both errors. IRS only fixed one and has been billing back taxes for the other error. We've been back and forth for over a year. So far, nobody seems to know how to fix the second error although it's the same kind of error as the other. that's our IRS.
PC ... good to learn about the prgress being made by both son and wife!
Jerry .... The show was small, but I got a few things. I bought two F7's in NP freight colors. Also, I bought one drive chassis and one dummy chassis for an old Balboa E8 set. The dirve and dummy chassis were a total price of $10.00 and I know just the dummy trucks are worth more than that. At Chuck's I got one of the newly released Greyhound busses plus some scenery products.
Fergie ... i hope the 24" curves on the MESS are not a mess for you. It should be okay
Dick....... I like the avatar.... tell us about it if you like. .
Happy Model Railroading
For those who get RFD-TV: 6:00EST Trains & Locomotive - "New River Adventure"
After shipping some packages today & adding up the-bay Fees...OUCH. Train fund is still in good shape though.
Gosh, for a tad less than the price of a Bigboy, I checked and could get the Kato GS4 & the entire matching car set. Now wouldn't that be mighty Perdy! I will one day have a Shay & one of those Proto 0-8-0 locos, as both could have a role on my little layout. Just not sure what order to go after these without winning a Lottery.
QUESTION: Does anyone have a section of track on their layout that is strictly for display? I REALLY want to make use of a large old trestle I have, but can't figure out how to do so and still connect it to anything (elevation problem). Maybe with some careful planning and many layers of styrofoam, I could make the average track level several sheets up in order to create a deeper ravine? Such dilemas.
Reading that Freelancers-Rivet Counters thread, I have to chuckle. To me it's like comparing styles and subject matter of art. Something can look photographic/accurate/etc and be lifeless, while another loosely created painting can touch one's soul and bring tears to their eyes, and visa-versa. I could sure jump into that thread, but prefer to hang out in the Diner.
While I'm here, arefill, please & thanks!
Hope everyone is have a good day.

Did ya miss me?
Well, I've been in Denver, CO for the past week and just got back late last night. Attended a conference for work and then the family flew out and met me there on Friday. We drove to the mountains for some snow bird fun and on the way back I found this BNSF unit coal train at 8,400 ft. el. between Tabernash and Fraser, CO on Saturday afternoon.
Benjamin took these with my Canon Digital Rebel while I was driving.....

Good evening .......going to be a cold one tonight under clear skies and calm winds. Last night of scheduled bowling tonight, we are in 4th place so we will be bowling against the 3rd place team. I hope we can take 8, then we will have more $$ for MRR run to LHS next week.
GARRY: I finally posted an Avatar after many moons. The picture was taken by a friend that we met on the Conway Scenic RR. I got permission to ride the cab and video the return trip to North Conway through Crawford Notch. The loco is an FP9 that was purchased from CNL back in the early 90's. We were at Fabyan RR station near Mt. Washington and had just completed the runaround on the siding for the return. She will be retired soon, this year they will be using a U23B that they purchased and repainted. The U boat has dynamic braking which the FP9 does not, and replacing the brake shoes gets expensive for Scenic railroads when they are trying so hard to contain expenses.
RYAN: Great photo of the coal train in the snows of CO. The family must have really enjoyed the trip.
Later,
Evening,
Rob, What about an elevated track belonging to a different railroad? Here in Cleveland the flats wee serviced by the B&O, overhead passed the NKP. Maybe you could work something out on your layout?
Jeff, looks like an ALCO RS-2 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ee/Santa_Fe_loco.jpg
