Good afternoon, evening to all. Very raw day today, never got over 32F, and areas 30 miles north of us got 6" of snow. But get this, they predict upper 60's to 70F on Tuesday...I'm ready.
We had the first of three burns yesterday, all the deadfall, and oak leaves and scrap wood from projects. I like to burn when I know that rain is coming soon just as a precaution, even though I have never had a brush fire get loose on me in 40 years.
SUE: CONGRATULATIONS !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY....!!! I see this is your second anniversary of turning 25!!! And Larry got you "what" for your BD ?? Ahh , I see there is more BD cake left, I had better get a piece before Fergie gets here, he has one ferocious appetite.
DUKE: DUKE !!! Wake up Duke !! Now what did you guys give Duke in that rootbeer float ?? Ed ??????
PC: That is real good news about SS. And it must be very gratifying to have church family so dedicated to helping fellow members.
JIM: I think you will really like a Credit Union, the ones around here give great service, I hope they do the same in your neck of the woods Jim.
RT: Good luck on the new job, you deserve good fortune!!
JEFF: Thanks for sending the warmer weather north, I see it will arrive here Tuesday!
BOBK: I saw the video on TV yesterday and today. Did you see that poor engineer?? He had front teeth knocked out, broken bones in face, head lacerations. He could have jumped out when he saw he had only 20 seconds, but he made a call to his dispatcher to get ambulances and all sorts of help to the scene asap instead, and took the hit head on the engine compartment. They still don't seem to know how the car got loose, some talk of faulty brakes. Aren't those brakes mechanically set ?
MARK: That was a nice video you made of your new locomotive, it really sounds great, very lifelike to the BB sound. Thank you for sharing it with us Mark !!
ROB: I hate those doggone water filters, they always seem to freeze up when trying to replace them. I was so afraid of breaking the plastic lines at my sons old house, that I converted that area to copper plumbing for strength, then used slip unions....no more trouble after that. I use a distiller here at our house off the artesian well for drinking water and ice cubes.
Looks like my fix for sore throat is working, no cold ( yet ), and I was soaked and freezing yesterday evening putting the fire out. I don't know why Ginger Brandy works, but it always has for me.
Later,
JimCG
Duke! Duke - WAKE UP!!

WOOHOO! I got my big boy to run around my loop!
Now if it could not short out and not derail it's front truck at a certain location I'd be set...
Grayfox: Thanks, and your welcome!Jim: Yes I've been testing it out, and programming the sounds and motor and such. For awhile I had CV2 set wrong, so it'd take off at 70 SMPH on 1/6 throttle... Now it works fine.
Everyone that said congrats in one way or another on the big boy: Thanks!
Now all I need to do is find 390 freight cars or so and a big enough layout... 5 lbs of diecast metal, 4 traction tires+ a challenger with 140 car rating...
Anyone have 70 feet of mainline?

Good Evening All,
Been down for the count this week with a nasty cold that's made the rounds in the shop. No amount of chicken soup or other stuff was going to keep it from it's duly appointed rounds either. Bother! Still needed to be at the shop but got little actually done save for paper work and the ever arriving E-mails. I feel more humanlike today after a couple of nights of one hours sleep at a time. Need to be careful what I take because of the BP deal but I feel I've turned the corner.
PC - keep the great news coming from the home front. Hope the check-ups went well today.
Sue - Happy Birthday! (don't let those cheeky guys bother you - a lady is entitled to her privacy). And besides anyone who plays with trains is still very young in outlook.
Mark - congrats on the BB. Hope you hit the lottery so you can build an empire to suit.
Bill - Those are some beautiful depot shots. I love the fact that it is still used.
Have made an appearance in the basement at odd times when I felt up to it and have triedround three of the weathering powder diluted with isopropyl alcohol to do brickwork with some promise to the technique. (just because it was featured in a national magazine doesn't mean it will actually work for me - after all my most frequent painting result is a run). At any rate here is a progress pic.
Not much else to report at this point - just trying to kick back a bit and get better. See y'all later. J.R.

Dick: Brakes shouldn't be any issue one way or the other. The switch was still thrown to the main and the derail was never set. Could you imagine if the F40 and passemger cars took the sideing and slammed into the centerbeam?

Evening all--
Been entertaining Mother all week--ran out of Hollywood Musicals on DVD by Wednesday, so we've been watching John Wayne westerns. At last count, she's seen RIO GRANDE three times (not that I mind, I LOVE that movie!). She's due to go home tomorrow. It's been fun, but at 93 she has short-term memory loss, so our conversations have been largely circular. Mainly about the property value of our land in Nevada City. I keep telling her that DESPITE the housing crunch, our property is worth about that of a small European country, LOL! It's been fun. Between that and keeping her supplied with chocolate covered peanuts, it's been quite a week. But I've gotten some work done in the garage (still vacuuming up little bits and pieces of October's roof job), and the engine facility is coming along well.
Now would someone slap me up side the head for not planning a turntable and roundhouse into all of this when I BUILT the darned thing? However, I'm doing some serious thinking which includes a Skil-saw and some serious track revisions in that vicinity. Oboy, here we go AGAIN!
Sue--. Oh, and when do you pour the 'water' into that INCREDIBLE creekbed of yours?
Hoople: Congrats on the Big Boy. 340 cars, huh? Well, I've got about 180 extra PFE reefers I could loan you if it gets TOO bad, LOL! Of course, my Yellowstones would get VERY angry at having their favorite reefers shipped north.
Well, have to go change the DVD for mom. I think I'll put on THE ALAMO, that should keep her happy for three hours or so.

Lol, nice... Not sure where I could run 180 reefers right now, I only have a 4x8... Gotta start somewhere eh?
I also need plenty more articulateds to catch up with you... Not sure how many there are left I can model, maybe the rio grande challenger and a cab forward...
I'm sure someone at the club will let me haul a train with my big boy at the next show.
Sorry hoople ment t say congrats just got a lot going on right now.
Hey all just a drop by to say hi and all is going okay talk to you all later

Hoople, "Anyone have 70 feet of mainline?
My mains are 68' each, stop over and we will see what she can do. If we get too many cars I have a 4-6-6-4 we can use as a pusher.
JR, nice weathering job, what building kit is that?
We had an empty grain hopper take off from a small staging yard here in Cleveland about 3 years ago. I think it was kids or homeless person disabled the brakes. The car rolled through an unguarded crossing hit a car then plowed into a cement plant.
Greyfox do you have a copy of the video? This is the train accident in southern Ohio right?

2 words, helper service. Have? No. Would have if I got off butt and worked on lyout? maybe. What's the derail this time? Classic fixes include tightneing a screw or adding weight to the pilot. (not so much as to negate the purpose of a pilot). Nice vid
Happy Birthday Sue! *Would start a tenor line of Happy Birthday, but is too afraid of the noise from the rest of the Diner*
Good to hear from ya PCjr! I eagerly await a vid.

Lee,
This was in Canton, MA. a loaded CSX centerbeam parked on a siding in Stouthton, MA rolled on to the main, rolled 3 miles into the next town. An Old Colony commuter train collided with the car.

Thanks for the saying nice vid, and well, it derails on my switch, then it rerails. Weight was my idea, I'll try the screw first.

Cake is OK, but in the end, it's just flavored bread. Now pie.....thats a different matter!

I've been fighting off a cold this week too. Nasty thing thats going around, huh? I've been popping the Zicam every few hours. Seems to be working! Give it a shot!
As expected, the boy lost his hand cast and his legs are doing well, and the wife can start putting a little bit of weight on the leg and start to get out of the wheelchair. Good news all around!
BTW, the brickwork on that building is most convincing! Nice work!

He's not real into it, but that's not for a lack of trying on dad's part. He's only mildly interested, ya know? These new "get well cards" seem to be causing a greater interest in him though!

Hey Mark, have you checked the gauge on the wheelsets? That could cause that. Also, if the frog on that turnout isn't deep enough for the flange on the wheel, that could cause that too.
Lee: (I hope I got the name right, I mean LSWRR) I can use my 4-6-6-4 as the mid train helper then, also.
PC: I don't think the wheels are out of gauge. It's only one turnout, and it's my broadest one, a #6 by atlas. It runs just fine through #4s.

Good morning,
Bob K, thanks. I did hear about it, but I heard it was in Canton (we have a Canton here).
Hoople, if we have 3 articulates in a consist we may need more cars or a serious grade, LOL. What code rail are you using? Did you nail or glue the turnout down?
Crystal, Tyger and I had a SERIOUS MISUNDERSTANDING this morning. Cats are not permitted on L.S.&W right of way! I'm making trees from dried plant material (basil I think) and the cats decided it would make a nice salad.
Hey, I see Lee's buying again. I'll have the pancakes this morning, make that a double.
Oh boy free breakfast and lee is buying. I'll have the chefs breakfast special girls yes make the eggs over med, bacon , toast and yes I'll have the hash browns and I'll have the pancakes instead of waffles. Oh yeah a large OJ from eds.
Merning all . Excuse me why I get this down while its still hot.
Not much happening today waiting to see if a caller from last night shows up today for a look at our place as we put it up for sale expecting to move to columbia, sc.
I'll just have a slice of whole wheat toast with some raspberry jam, some of that good ole coffee and some of Ed's OJ please.
Speaking of Ed....I wonder if Los Tres Sombreos Brigade took a hold of him...
I wanted to share some good information with my good buds here in the diner.....
A few months ago we went to the GATS train show in Winston-Salem, NC and I bought some nice tools at good prices from The Tool Man. I was digging through my bag this morning and found their business card. Here is their web site for those who are interested: http://www.hobbytools.com
Also, this week at work the Web Workgroup sent an email out to all web designers about Adobe now offering an online web version of Adobe Photoshop Express with up to 2 GB of storage space for FREE. Yes, all you have to do is set up an online account with a valid email address and you have access to a scaled down version of Photoshop and with all that free storage space too. Here is that web site: https://www.photoshop.com/express/index.html

Good morning, diners........
I was just thinking today is March 29th and if I recall correctly from a recent post from Bobk that this is the day the Lord took his child (April, Mrs. Bobk) home to heaven. It's been gratfifying to see the emotional support extended to Bobk on this forum in the past year. It speaks highly of the sincerely good people in this hobby. If you're here, Bobk, we the diners care about you and your kids.
Similarly it's good to see the kindness extended to PC and his family as both Mrs. PC and PC Jr. have undergone extensive surgeries.
Of course, there are several other instance where kindness has been extended to fellow model railroaders.
Thumbs up to all of the great people in this forum.....

A nice bright start to this Saturday in Boston. Lee, I guess I'll have a stack of those pancakes.
I see that many are under the weather with all the colds and flu going around. Hope that you're feeling better today.
Sue: A belated Happy Birthday to you. So did you get any birthday "trains"?
This is a series of radio clips from the train mishap in Canton, MA. http://www.patriotledger.com/homepage/x1059921490
Ryan: I always check out the Tool Man when at the Springfield, MA show. Some great finds, especially all the surplus stainless medical tools.
Philip: Too bad your settlement coudn't be retroactive to first eligibility.
J.R.: Nice looking building, that city scene is looking good. Is this building part of it also? Like the brick color. Hope you're feeling better, hard to do any quality w**k being so run down.
Hoople: So finally, what a wait, I sure hope that Big Boy runs perfect for you. I remember years ago hunting down a Stewart (Kato drive) F3 PhII B unit to complete my B&O ABBA. It became a mission that took me almost 2 years to get one of those long discontinued units.
Well today is really going to be somewhat tough, real bitter/ sweet. I have my wife's family visiting from NJ, for the 1 year aniversary of loosing my sweetheart. My sister-in -law and April's friends are going to empty my closet of her clothes, a job I couldn't even consider doing ( I can barely even walk into the closet as it is). I can't believe it's been a year already! A heartfelt thanks to all of tou that have made this past year a bit more easy to take.
Do have a nice day,
Edit: Garry, Thank you ever so much for those kind words. The members here and at my club have really helped so much. Does go to show what great people we have in this hobby.
