Good Morning from Tipton IN !

Good morning all,
Snow storm yesterday was less than expected only 7" of snow, but last night the north winds hit and blew the snow into drifts and now everything is a mess. Last night the Discovery Channel's Modern Marvels show did a good job on "America's Railroad".
Johnboy, tell us more about the track cleaning car, how does it work, Pictures?? I'm still thinking about building an Aztec type car.
Terry, very nice job!
Phil, yes that looks like a really good show, I'll be adding it to my DVR since I have to work bright and early on Friday. Sounds like a good haul from the train show.
I found some web sites of interest:
Several forms and pocket manuals for the PRR used from 1940-1950 including souvenir and investor promotional material: http://prr.railfan.net/documents/
Several Kodachrome color slides from 1940-1950 in a searchable data base. How dirty were the trackside buildings? Searching by county is your best bet. You can find it here: http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/

Good Morning All,
Just a regular to go please. It's in the 40's this morning with a steady drizzle. I've been trying to catch up posts since I got back from Florida but you guys have been quite busy these last few days. My condolences for those greiving and prayers for those in need.
Haven't had much time for the layout the last week or so and I'm off to Chicago tomorrow to pickup all the parts one of our drivers got. If I have an easy run and not too much snow, maybe I'll get some time at the end of the weekend. The truck got back from Fla yesterday in the late afternoon so we have the cars to go through as well as an open house the weekend after this.
I love the layout photos' you've all been posting, lots of nice details and good ideas. Good to see Ed get back at it too. I just don't know of any way to detail the track other than ainting once it's down. otherwise the rail is bare where it moves on the ties if you use flex track. Personally I prefer to use the track without the attached roadbed as the variety of turnouts and other accessories is much greater and the track is easier to adapt for different situations.
Ed - One thing you might try after you get the ballast down is to dribble some dilute black ink down the center of the ties and ballast to simulate the grease drippings so commonly dropped especially by the steam locomotives. Even the rotten, really weathered ties in the museum yard that date to who knows when are still stained in the middle with crud.
Ryan - Loved the PC menu, but any menu for them needs a healthy helping of crow (pie?) We were having a chuckle the other day as the only road to come out the other side of the merger at least in name was the New Haven and the other two didn't want any part of it. And Inch - I'm not sure that was what they had in mind when they wanted to "merge". Waste of a lot of good stuff, no? Well, I've got lots to do today again so I've gotta run. CUL, J.R.
hey guys! well my layout might not be as extravagaintic as some of the wick'ad impressive layouts shown, but It's a good start.
Zoe, just a cup to go for me right now. Wanted to stop by briefly on the way to w**k.

Rob, just think of it as something your wife will appreciate, and a very simple to do HD list item. She will appreciate it a bunch, I am sure. (You could always mentally go over a list in your mind of what you need to do next on the layout if the eulogy runs over-long... Just don't admit to that if she asks you what you're thinking!). So that would be a yes.
Of course, you might make mental notes during the funeral of what parts of the service that you would and would not pick to include for your funeral (since my guess is that the odds are against your wife wanting to go as simple as you'd prefer). Then a few weeks later you could suggest to her that "For my funeral, I'd like you to..." (Might even sound to her like you were listening.
My , anyway.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Coffee, please. I haven't been for a while. The sunshine has won out.
Terry, I am jealous of your space. Looks like you have made efficient use of it. Thanks for the photos.
Phil, Our gas prices are now in the $3.40's. Diesel made $3.80 on Monday. We would be best able to stay home and work on our layouts.
Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Morning all!
Check it out! My son finished his Pinewood Derby Racer last night. He runs it tonight. He needed help with the power tools and such, and also to hold the body decal while he wetted it, but the rest is all him. I brought it in to work this morning to weigh it on the scale. The legal limit is 5 oz., and, well, a picture says a thousand words......
Hope he does well!
The wife is getting a little antsy about the surgery tomorrow, but she's just giving it to God. Thank you all for all of your prayers of comfort and safety.
Oh, and Terry, really, really, great stuff! I meant to say that last night when I saw it, but I guess I had a serious case of tunnel vision. I was trying to save the life of a brother model railroader! I won't mention his name, but his initials are Rob Cederstrand!
Well, I best be off!
Later!

Oh, you're GOOOOOOD!
Hi again, Zoe, Sue! Zoe, how about some of Ed's OJ, cup of coffee and I'll take a run at the buffet this morning for breakfast, please. Thank you.
Sue, good to see you back in the Diner, and I'd agree with you - the way gas prices are predicted for this summer, we may be spending more time on our layouts. Cheaper that way (well, for me, since I have a lot of structures and detail stuff that needs assembling/placing on the layout...).
Lee, thanks for the links to the photo sites - I've sent the link to my home address so I can check it out tonight.
Terry, your layout looks like you've made good use of the space, and have already put a good amount of time into it - great job! I would Philnrunt's kudos on the city photo . Looks like a fun layout to run, too.
Philnrunt, at least now you know about the Muncie train show - now you need to get yourself on their mailing list to get notified ahead of the next one. Looks like you managed to find a few things to get at the other show, even if there were a few wee problems...
And Colby, you've been moving along there on your layout also. It's good when we get out layout past a certain point to where we can run trains on more than the bare plywood.
Johnboy, good to hear that you've had some better weather up in Sasketchawan. There may be hope for spring down south here, after all!
Only a very few flakes to be seen around here this morning (the snow kind...). No accumulation, and only 28 F. I heard we're supposed to warm up and have some nice weather on the weekend. Now that would be very nice!
I'd best get to my breakfast for now. Keep those great pics coming, boys and gals!

Hey all, question........
Has anyone ever used millit spray that you get for cage birds (all leafed or foamed up of course) for tall, skinny trees, like a poplar tree? It looks it be the right shape and a pleasing texture, but I know that as it dries out it tends to drop the seeds, so you'd have to secure it all with maybe some matte medium. It looks to me like it's work pretty well though. Here's a pic of the stuff....
Anyone tried it?
OK, I guess lunch is on me today!
Who's hungry.......
(Nothin' but the best for my friends ya know!)
Howdy!
Glad some of you liked the GM&O menu yesterday.
Ed sorry about the taste buds, sounds like the tequila collection is still in good shape though.

Thanks for the comments ,all! Tips and critiques are welcome and gratefully accepted!!
PC: that car looks fast standing still! Also, there's gotta be a use for that bird stuff, maybe some paint and ground foam for pine trees? Try one and post pics?JEFF: Is the water tower a kit? I like it.
GARRY: finally saw the rock post, that's good stuff!
A few more layout pics?

Terry ... thanks for the remarks and i really like you layout room!
Jeff ... I, too, like the water tower. The vines add to realism.
Happy Model Railroading.

Made a run into town to the PO (heads up PC & JP...packages on the way) and I finally remembered my camera. Even better, caught a train passing through Fairmount. Good thing no cops were around, as I had to jet ahead and find a place to pull over. Too bad it was so overcast. Here are some pics:
This last pic is of a couple engines switching some hoppers at the large Textile plant in Fairmount. One day I need to try getting photos of that place to share.
Perhaps one day I'll remember to take the camera on a sunny day.LOL Hope everyone is doing well. Rob
Afternoon.
Sunny here, was rainy in the morning though.
Well since my last post was 2 pages back...
Flashwave: Who makes that engine house? Seeing yours makes me want one.
Sue: Are you and Larry going to Trains Trains and More Trains in Puyallup? I know I am.
Later all.

I'd love for it to be a beautiful day. But I have a cold. (feels like a cold and a half...) Stayed home to rest. Girls, may I have some of that Raman Noodle stuff you have for the sick and weary? yeah, that's the one.
PC: Coem West young Grasshopper. We see alot of UP on the way between Avon and farther down Terre Haute. On the way to doc's I saw 3 Up Dash 9s and a CSX SD something or other sitting at IMI to get cleared into Avon Yards. And last year I saw a KCS Southern Belle on point of the Schneider Piggy
Hoop: Sorry, not my engine house. Seen that model at the club, but she t'aint (sniff) mine.
Is it done already? thanks. Keep change. I'll sip on this and then it's back to bed.

Wanted to compliment everyones outstanding layout pics that have been posted recently. Really great and inspiring work. Really appreciate some of the little details.
Well, about time for evening rounds. Got the fire roaring in the cabin, as it is going to drop into the low twenties tonight. (stop laughing you northerners)
Rob
I fall asleep fo a few days and "Wham" the place has changed. Gone the old smelly furniture, gone the mice holes... NIce change!
Anyway I see the coffee pot is still "crusty" so I think I'll grab a cuppa java! BTW the Powder Blue Sheers gotta go! Blech!

If there's any left, I'll have the Salmon and a bit of key lime pie for desert please. Fixin to head off home and do some chores after dinner. I'll see if i can check in later. J.R.
Evening all
glad to see the conversation is as good as always.
darn i'm gealous of your layouts still waiting on 4 switches for mine to re-commence tracklaying
oh i,m sorry tea please

Evening Gang: Today was pretty much a cattle day. We had the vet come out and give some heifer calves their shots and the bangs vacination. Tomorrow we'll try and figure out what calf belongs to what cow. We had them marked but they licked it off.
I have a check up with the VA doc tomorrow afternoon. There isn't anything wrong just a check up.
Terry those are somegreat pictures of your layout. It really looks like Wisconsin. Any chance of you posting a track plan or have you already and I'm having a senior moment.
Sue those are pretty high prices on the fuel. Our diesel is $3.50 last time I looked. I'm sure it will be up there soon.
It was 25f this morning and in the high 60s this afternoon. Tomorrow it's supposed to hit the 70s. That's OK since we still have to sort out the calves.
I guess I'll head out and see what else is going on.
Good Night All
Good Evening, Diners - Chloe, I'll go with what Rob has - the Grilled Salmon and veggies, a fruit compote, and I may have that blueberry pie... (shhh...) On second thought, let me have that blueberry first - I'd better eat that before PC gets here.
Today after that 'office' thing, I was ready to get in the car, turn up the CD player, and head for home. After coming here for dinner, I think I'll just veg out for the evening.
PC, keeping your wife's surgery in my prayers. I found out tonight that my friend Linda(from Memphis)'s uncle in Mississippi died of a massive heart attack yesterday, and she'll be going there tomorrow for his funeral. If you guys (and gals) would keep Linda, her aunt Jay and the rest of her family in your prayers, I (and I'm sure they as well) would appreciate it.
Jeff, I like that water tower - looks old, different from every other one, and nicely done! Keep up that good w**k job!
railroadnut675 - like your CSX - but if Ken Larsen (CSX Slug) were in the Diner, he'd like that even more! And there's a school that still teaches Latin? I had it way back in high school, but rarely heard of a school offering it nowadays. Cool!
Rob - Ken would like your pics also - glad you had your camera along (and that the cops weren't) this time! And:

indeed!
So Fergie, is that photo from your skiing trip? Nice switcher there!
Hey, Gav - your time will come, and you'll be posting pics that will have our (newer) Diners drooling over themselves, too!
Well, I'd better get back to my dinner. I want to play around with a couple of layout ideas on the software tonight, too.
Blessings and prayers,
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?
HE WON!!!!!
My sons car won the pinewood derby race and took second in the design contest!
He's pretty happy! He got a small participants trophy, a large 2nd place trophy, and a great big 1st place trophy and a blue ribbon!

congrats to your son .that pinewood raceing sounds like fun. now what is it. from what I gather is that they design a car and race it .But why is it called pinewood and is it powered or down a ramp?
Jim thanks for the encouragement just heard from my shipper the switches will be with me in the next6-10 day's so then it's down and durty on the p/way but as regards to the others drooling it will probably be the case of running to the bathroom to beas my modelling skills aint up to much.
sorry can I have another tea and a cheese sandwich please
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful day down here in Paradise. The actual weather didn't turn out anything like the forecast (how strange!!) and it was warm again today. I expect it to be comfortable tonight, but the a/c is back on right now.
I did get active with the layout once again. I'm almost through painting the rails in the little section I am working on. It really makes a difference. And I started (barely) ballasting at one end of this little section. Hopefully I'll get a bit more done tomorrow. But time will be short as we have a number of things to do to prepare for the trip, including running out to the orange grove.
Lost time this afternoon as I had to take my computer into my local guru to fix a problem. Nothing serious, but from shut down to start up cost me 3+ hours, including travel time.
JR: One thing you might try after you get the ballast down is to dribble some dilute black ink down the center of the ties and ballast to simulate the grease drippings so commonly dropped especially by the steam locomotives.
Colby: well my layout might not be as extravagaintic as some of the wick'ad impressive layouts shown, but It's a good start.
PC - congrats to your son on winning the Pinewood Derby. Quite a week he's had. Best wishes to your wife for her surgery.
Terry - now that you've shown more photos, I'm even more impressed. Yeah, show us the last two bays.
Garry: I can't eat because I had a tooth extraction this morning.
Rob - nice photos. They often come out better on a cloudy day because you don't have the great contrast between sun and shadow.
Fergie - nice seeing you dropping by again. How long until you have to ship out again?
That's about it from down here. Catch up with you tomorrow, I hope.
Hasta mañana,
Ed
