...not by what the weatherguessers are saying this evening Dick.  Yes the storm is headed to Newfoundland, but our share is some wind, and maybe an inch or so of snow, but they don't think that very likely. So we are thankful for that. (In fact Fergie probably won't get as much wind as we will here further down the shore. "Down" in this instance being north and east towards Cape Breton.  I'm told it's because the current off-shore flows  easterly like a river from the direction of Yarmouth in the south, towards Sydney in the north.  So, in a boat going east it's like going downstream.  We are "Down the shore" from Halifax, although we are further north than they are!  Aren't you glad you asked?Clown [:o)])

Let's just say we dodged 2 bullets on outr way down. Don't know how and don't care to question the weather gods either but we did. We sailed from St John's Friday night and they got hit by a storm Saturday all we got was 20 kt winds out of the Nor'East all the way back ho... all 550 nautical miles. Yes We got lucky as NOAA was originally predicting hurricane force winds for part of our transit along with freezing spray. A real killer! Several ships were at anchor todayin Bedford Basin awaiting for the winds to die down as wind warnings are in effect at this time.

BTW: John love the picture of the viaduct, excellent!

Whistling [:-^]

A very Happy St. Pats Day to ya all.

Chloe, If you please, I will have the spinach pizza with a mint julip shake and a slice of key lime pie to celebrate.

For all my friends here, this is your laugh for the day.

An Irish man walks into a pub. The bartender asks him, "what'll you have?" The man says, "Give me three pints of Guinness please."
So the bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they're gone. He then orders three more.
The bartender says, "Sir, I know you like them cold. You don't have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on it and when you get low I'll bring you a fresh cold one."
The man says, "You don't understand. I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too, and we're drinking together.
The bartender thought that was a wonderful tradition.
Every week the man came in and ordered three beers. Then one week he came in and ordered only two. He drank them and then ordered two more.
The bartender said to him, "I know what your tradition is, and I'd just like to say that I'm sorry that one of your brothers died."
The man said, "Oh, me brothers are fine - I just quit drinking."

Last day of work today, but it is a big one. Started at 6:30 this morning and won't be done tonight till between 9-10pm. Only an hour off from 4:30 to 5:50. But then three weeks off. I've sure been looking forward to that.  We will take a little trip, visiting some friends and our son and D-in-law in Spokane. This time we will take the wifes HHR instead of the 3/4 ton. So we will save substantially on fuel.

FERGIE,  I hope you arn't to green out there on the briney, it doesn't sound very good for that area right now.

PAUL,  You have moved enough gravel you should have those containers buried by now.

PC, It seems that your family is trying to corner the market on surgeries lately. Our prayers and best wishes to your wife and son. We hope that this gives them a great boost in their vitality and mobility.

CAPE JIM,   Did you check your horoscope today, I think it would be a good time to put the move on that little bank teller.  Doncha know........

Well I will try and get back in before we leave.   By the way, I have mixed and put down a couple of bowls of that "STRUCTOLIGHT"  It seems to be working well on the slopes and more horizontal places. I haven't tried it on the more vertical sections yet. It seem to have an acceptable texture for the mountains, it was nice to get some gray instead of the white plaster on them.  Will keep you posted. This apperently is the same product that you get Stateside called "GYPSOMLIGHT"

Keep smiling, it looks good on ya.

Johnboy out.............................

The "Wobbly" will wobble a little and then get a break for awhile.

Top a tha afternoon to ye!

PC: If you put the chairs back to back would you have 2-8-2? That was fast for your son's surgery, good luck!

RYAN: I'm a bit disapointed there's no corned beef, but the portabellas and beef will do just fine, thank you.

LEE: I just watched on the news the Mesabe Miner leaving Duluth with 52,000 tons of coal ,led out of the harbor by the Adler.Cool! Spring's almost here.

JIM O'Cape: anything in the PO box?

The CFO brought home 4 standard issue camo shirts for the USAF. She's sewing on the nametags and 148th Fighter Wing patches for a co-worker that's being deployed to the sandbox(2nd deployment).26 years old ,three little girls. She's the mom, dad's serving ,too.Dad is at least stationed here as a recruiter.I can't imagine the CFO being away from me that long, or vice versa.Again, thanks to you all that have, will or are serving.

Still haven't got the BIL over with a camera for pics, working on that for tommorrow. The chainlink fences came out OK. Forgot who asked, but I thought I bought "bridal Veil" at wally's but the CFO says it's "toule". It has a finer web than bridal veil.I'm getting better on each one I build. The first one had WAAAAY too much rattle can silver paint on it. The stuff comes in a roll like ribbon,it's white and 3/4 or 1" wide.only a couple bucks/roll,enough for ALOT of fencing.

Diners!

Dick:

You might have a loose connection somewhere, cold solder connections don't go away, but loose connections  make and break with every little bump of the table.
...that's why I checked the power bus connections, but things seem tight there too.  Thanks for the thought though, and if it happens again I'll look there first.

Gav:

listening to those placenames I thought you were in Devon or Cornwall .
...thought it might twitch your wires! Actually I was born a bit east of there in Dorset.  If you go to Google Earth, set pointer to 50º 48' 51.02" N x 2º 16' 48.58" W, @ 722 ft altitude, you get to my best guess from the memory of a 4 year old, of the place. I spent my first years at 50º 49' 12.14" N x 2 17' 12.42" W,@ 1000 ft and that heap of stone is now a private school.

The place names that sounded West country are all in Nova Scotia, and I suppose the early settlers had West country connections!  Not bad for a heavily Scots settled province.  We presently live at somewhere  near 44º 50' 43.99 N x 62º 27' 32.77" W ....(the resolution is very poor as we aren't overflown very often, and so altitude should be about 5500 ft., then zoom out to get the broader picture of Sober Island and area.)

Jerry:

I look at something and think it looks pretty good then take a photo and see were my modeling needs to improve
...You too?, Couldn't see where, but it happens to me all the time!  As in last night's post of the inner guard rails on the viaduct.  From on top they look quite good, but at track level, all the misalignments come leaping out.  Must be the leprechauns!

I shouldn't have written that, because no sooner had I done so (2:42p.m. Atlantic DST), than the power went out, and stayed out (trees down on the line somewhere near Sheet Harbour) for 5 hours!

Jim o'Cape :

and best of luck on getting the replacement arm made (and getting a logging truck or two).
...I figure I'm going to try making a cast using tack-up putty for a mold, and epoxy for the material. If I'm lucky, I can do one for each side, and sand them down to equal thicknesses, glue them together, and go from there.  Any major faults in that idea people?

On the trucks, there's an outfit in New Brunswick that makes many different N Scale vehicles including modern staked logging trucks (they don't have the self loaders, hence the need for the High Hoe).  I've lost their url, but can search it out I expect.  From the look of their products, they use a computer printer programmed to produce 3D objects.  Way Cool. The viaduct, BTW, is over 640 scale feet.

Paul:

Der that Cat excavator is used for log loading. It is equiped with a graple in place of the bucket.
...Thanks for the confirmation, it's what I'd hoped was the case. (Not Case, I know it's a Cat!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Ryan: Those buildings have been hidden for 35 years? You did fine work then, and haven't stopped!Thumbs Up [tup]  That Corned Beef and Cabbage looks grand.  Any chance you could do Boiled Beef and Carrots?(It's a Brit thing)

Fergie:  I've been away myself and didn't realize you were "on the briny ocean tossed".  The wind tonight by the Sober Island bridge was the strongest I've experienced here on a walk.  Good thing I didn't have Rosie-the-dog as, in her old age, she probably wouldn't have been able to stand up! Glad you liked the pic.

Johnboy: One good Yuk deserves another...this one is courtesy of Bill North, I think.

Two men were sitting next to each other at Murphy's Pub. After awhile, one guy looks  at the other and says, 'I can't help but think, from  listening to you, that you're from Ireland '

The other guy responds proudly, 'Yes, that I am!'
The first guy says, 'So am I! And where about from Ireland might  you be?'

The other guy answers, 'I'm from Dublin , I am.'

The first guy responds, 'So am I!'
'Mother Mary and Begora. And what street did you live on in  Dublin ?'
The other guy says, 'A lovely little area it was. I lived on  McCleary Street in the old central part of town.'
The first guy says, 'Faith and it's a small world.  So did I!  So did I!
And to what school would you have been going?'
The other guy answers, 'well now, I went to St.. Mary's, of course.'
The first guy gets really excited and says, 'And so did I. Tell me,
what year did you graduate?'
The other guy answers, 'Well, now, let's see. I graduated in  1964.'
The first guy exclaims, 'The Good Lord must be smiling down upon  us!
I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same bar  tonight.
Can you   believe it, I graduated from St. Mary's in 1964 my own self!'

About this time, Kathleen walks into the bar, sits down and orders a beer.
Brian, the bartender, walks over to Kathleen, shaking his head and
mutters, 'It's going to be a long night tonight.'
Kathleen asks, 'Why do you say that, Brian?'
'The Murphy twins are drunk again.

Time for my dessert and tea.  I'll say goodnight, as I've a bunch of catching up to do elsewhere, and really just finished what WORD had saved when the lights went out.

God Bless all, and prayers for healing comfort and peace for all those in need. (PC's son for Thursday's op, etc.)Angel [angel]

Good Evening.

Der; I wouldn't worry about misaligned track because if you look at some of the stuff the prototypes are running on you would be scared.  I think it looks really good.

Jerry; I like the fish shack!

Terry, is that coal heading for Canada?  I know it's not coming down here.

PC, I wish everyone in your household handles the next couple of weeks in good order; especially you; sounds like you might need you super dad/husband outfit for the next few days.

Ryan, that cold storage building looks pretty good.  Very detailed backdrops you have there who makes that and do you have their website?

Dick, yes we have one big fault out here, but fortunately it runs under Lake Erie for us.  When I moved out here in 2000 I took earth quake insurance on this house and State farm tried to talk me out of it.  Recently they stated they will no longer offer earth quake insurance to any new clients in the Ohio area.  We have a good shake about once every 3 months or so out here, Ashtabula is the hot seat.

I received my MRR Stimulus payment notice in the mail today.  It states individuals who normally do not have to file a tax return, the new law provides for payments to individuals who have a total of $3,000 or more in earned income, Social Security benefits, and/or certain veterans' payments, you may receive a payment of $300. http://www.irs.gov/

It also states MRR Stimulus payments will be sent out in may.  Wahoo!

 Good Evening from Winterpeg!

Yes it is still winter here but the temp is supposed to be about +35F this week so hopefully we will lose our nickname. One can only hope.

Not sure about this corned beef and cabbage request. I know it's St. P day but really, to take that over Ryan's menu? Are you serious?

Jim, the new caboose is really a fine one. TrueLine Trains is to be congratulated for doing a correct prototype and not just sticking a new road name on the same caboose. There are significant differences between the CN and CP versions. Mind you it should be good as it cost $45. I'm just glad I pre-ordered as the run is sold out everywhere at least for the transition era version. I had a very good Saturday as I spent half the day going to 2 shops in town and spent more than I had intended but I've found that if you don't buy it when you see it, it won't be there later. So in that vein I bought another CN boxcar kit, one of those Branchline train versions so there are lots of little parts to keep me busy.

Jeff, I hope your dad has a riding mower otherwise it will be a full time job! Really nice of him to help you out though. By the way I'm curious as to what kind of car you have with 275,000 miles on it. That is truly amazing. Does it have a 3.8 litre motor or is it a V8?

Der, I didn't look up your lat and long but I assume from previous posts you are up around Stellarton? I've actually been to Sheet Harbour a few times on business but that was 10 years or so ago when I made quite a few business trips to Nova Scotia. Sure did enjoy the Seafood Chowder many restaurants serve there not to mention the all your can eat mussel bar in a certain well known Halifax establishment.

Well it is nearly time for a TV show my wife and I enjoy, Corner Gas. I don't think it is shown south of the border but it is a comedy with dry humour, no laugh track and it is set and filled in a little town just south of Johnboy.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

Evening Gang: Mary Ann has bronchitus. The doctor gave her a scrip for an inhailer and some antibiotics and told her to take Mucinex and Robitussin ( What I told her to do last week) Of course since the doctor told her and charged her $75 she'll do it. Next time I'll charge her $75 and get some more trains.

Lee the coal is headed for the power plant at Silver Bay. The next boat is supposed to go to Marquite Mich. The CSL Assiboine was caught in the ice above the Blue Water bridge for a bit until the Risley came down and broke her out.

Rob I wish that I could help you out with the hay but mine isn't horse quality and it's here not there.

Well I guess I'll hit the hay.

Good evening, I wish I had saved some room for Ryan's corned beefand cabbage.  Yummy.

Thanks for the photos, der and Ryan. I can't believe the size of the yard.

Did the BNSF-semi collision north of Seattle make the national news? Semi turned across the track into a private driveway.  Luckily the train was moving 10 mph slower that usual.  It ripped the trailer apart, and moved the track allowing the engine and several cars to plow though the dirt.  No one was hurt.

Still no news about the earthquake.

CN Charlie: It's a 94 Buick Century with a beefed up engine and tranny. The engine is a 3.1 V6 bored out to a 3.3 and overcranked with a 3.3 crank. Lots of torque. There's also an electrically driven turbo charger buried between the intake and the block. This thing puts off a real whistle going down the highway. Gas milage sucks. Average 12-14 MPG.

Had a great vacation in Florida. while was gone, i ended up redesigning my track plan to better fit what i wanted to model. as soon as i got home, and unpacked, it was over to the layout for some major deconstruction. I'll post photos soon.

Good Morning All,

A regular to go please Zoe. Spent all my time this morning catching up posts so i can't sit and stay. 42F this morning with the usual overcast and a predicted high of 46. No more rain until tomorrow though. Got all the cars unloaded from Fla and underway along with the rest of the work for Savannah. The Lotus 23 with the disconnected wires i got running after it was towed in to the pits and drove back to the truck. In a sprint race format, any delay spells finito to any chance of a good finish so the driver just parked the car and didn't look for the problem.

PC - Good luck to you and your son on his surgery. You'll be in our paryers of course.

Jerry - The fish stand looks great. Looked at the pic before i read your text and said - hey that looks just like..... Wonder if the actual structure still stands as not much has changed in a lot of the countryside outside Birmingham.

Der - love those dead track section issues don't you? I usually find it's dirty track and not bad joiners especially in N. I think the inner edge of the rail is a lot more important in iNvisible scale for proper running.

Gotta run - thanks for the buffet again Bill.     CUL, J.R.

A wet one around here today!  Been raining all night last night.  Some areas have already received between 1/2" and 1" of rain.  Rainfall totals should end up in the 2"-4" range by tomorrow evening.  This much rain will produce significant flooding across central and southern Indiana for the last half of this week.  The rain will taper off by late tomorrow afternoon.  As colder air returns, there is the chance for a few flakes of snow mixing in later tomorrow.  That'll be a mess for those that get flooded!  Imagine......not only are you flooded out, but it's ice cold muddy water roaring through your living room!  Better get the extra blankets out!  We always open our home to flood victims in the area when it gets like this.

So my wife is starting to stress out over this surgery for my son.  She just does not do well with even slightly stressful situations.  I just tell her that stressing over it isn't going to change it one iota.  It's all in God's hands, so just give it to Him and relax.  It couldn't be in better hands, could it?  Oh well, it's just her nature I guess.  And this is something to be mindful of.  I mean, my son has the same condition she does, so waking up after the surgery could be a very real problem, and he's never been under, so we don't know how he's going to react to it.  Guess I should take my own advice, huh?  Just give it to Him!

Oh well, I best get busy!

Later!

Morning Gang: Mary Ann woke up around 6am and was hungrey so I guess she is feeling better and is on the mend. It's raining here the temp is 60f and supposed to get to 70f before going down to the 50s this afternoon. We need the rain and I put out hay for all the stock yesterday, so let it come.

I am going to finish my coffee and head for the well site to meet with the operations people.

See you all later.

Good morning, 42F and rain this morning.

Paul, Duluth to Silver Bay is not a long haul for coal; I'm surprised they didn't deliver the coal to Silver Bay directly by rail. Duluth isn't on my list of coal shipping ports, Superior and Thunder Bay is.   Did you see the ore jenny sale in MRR?  2 HO-Scale ore Jennies for $6.  Glad to hear the Mrs. Is feeling better.

PC, best wishes for your son, I'm sure everything will work out fine.  Something that helped me when my kids underwent surgery: think about how many other kids have gone through surgery and how many people have had to undergo general anesthesia and they are fine, I guess what I'm trying to say is a little trust in the Doctors abilities and track record. As a parent I understand what you are going through and I wish you the best.

Tomorrow my truck is going to the dealer to have the safety recall stuff worked on so I guess I have the whole day to assemble the rest of the bench work on my layout.  I did cut and paint the last few sections of sidewalk (to replace the sections I melted with rubber cement) last night.

Trying to figure out the double ended yard for my layout; I'll have an area 2' x 17' in a harp shape.  Any suggestions?

Morning Zoe, Diners - Zoe, I'll have the special, please,  and a glass of Ed's OJ.

This morning by around 7:30, we already had a little under 3.4" of rain (since midnight), and more on the way today...

Had to put some rags at the bottom of my living room windows, as the rain was coming down so fast, it couldn't run out the outside bottom quick enough, and was pooling some on the ledge (plastic or ceramic, not sure what it's made of). Hopefully it won't run over and soak the wall or carpet. But the rain had slacked up enough for me to get to my car this morning without getting totally soaked. Better watch out in your area - definite possibility of flooding in some areas.Captain [4:-)]

Jeff, before this all gets down the Muddy Mississippi to your way, better put the pontoons under your trailer! Hey, I think it's neat that you get the bubble top on your car. Probably spooks some people when they see you coming on the road (wondering "Quick! - What's my speed?"). Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

PC, we're hanging in there with you and the family, and what you said is true - it's not in your hands, anyway. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Ryan, nice looking cold storage company - could be named "Polar Bear Storage" or "Arctic Storage" (assuming you don't want to go with the Walthers kit name of "J.Frost Cold Storage"...). Looks good, though. Thumbs Up [tup] BTW, I have the Walthers kit on order, but it's more of a transition era building, with the cooling tower on the roof. Have you seen Ian Wilson's website and monthly weblogs on MRR'ing? His one layout (in the pics there) has a cold storage facility set in the transition era (or maybe late steam). Here's his site:

http://www.canadianbranchline.com/

His weblogs cover a variety of useful info. Can't recall who, but I know another Diner tipped me off to him (maybe one of our NOTB folks). Oh, and sorry I missed the corned beef and cabbage last night, Ryan.

Fergie, good to hear you're back on terra firma again. Sounded like some ride home, though.

With this weather, I expect today at w**k to be a rather slow one - good for getting the stack of papers whittled down.Smile [:)] One meeting tonight at church, but that's the only getting out I expect. (Brought a can of soup for my lunch at w**k)

Best get to my breakfast for now. Be sure your car can float if you have to get out, and don't drive through any puddles along the roads, if it's raining in your area as much as in ours today.

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Paul, great news about Mary Ann!  Thats a real good sign!

Lee, I have great confidence in the surgeon we're working with.  He's an excellent surgeon with impeccable credentials, and he's familiar with their particular physical condition.  The thing with the anesthesia is that with people who have their disability (CMT, a form of MD) is that they often don't react the same as most people to the anesthesia.  They sometimes don't wake up, at all....ever.  They (doctors) haven't yet figured out why or how to fix that.  And each person is different, so there's no real way to know how it's going to go other then to just go ahead and do it, and by then it's too late to go back.  Thats the concern.  (Probably more then you ever wanted to know about that, isn't it?)  Just going under can be very life threatening for my wife and both of my children.  In the last 5 months my wife has gone under three times, and she's been under before when she was a kid, so we kind of knew what to expect, but neither of my kids have ever been under, so this is new territory.  Thats what my wife and I are concerned about.  But like I said earlier, it's not really in our hands anyways, is it?

I can almost hear God asking, "Do ya trust me, really, or do you just say that you do?"

......I trust.........
