Good Morning All,

Just a regular to go please. It's in the 40's this morning with a steady drizzle. I've been trying to catch up posts since I got back from Florida but you guys have been quite busy these last few days. My condolences for those greiving and prayers for those in need.

Haven't had much time for the layout the last week or so and I'm off to Chicago tomorrow to pickup all the parts one of our drivers got. If I have an easy run and not too much snow, maybe I'll get some time at the end of the weekend. The truck got back from Fla yesterday in the late afternoon so we have the cars to go through as well as an open house the weekend after this.

I love the layout photos' you've all been posting, lots of nice details and good ideas. Good to see Ed get back at it too. I just don't know of any way to detail the track other than ainting once it's down. otherwise the rail is bare where it moves on the ties if you use flex track. Personally I prefer to use the track without the attached roadbed as the variety of turnouts and other accessories is much greater and the track is easier to adapt for different situations.

Ed - One thing you might try after you get the ballast down is to dribble some dilute black ink down the center of the ties and ballast to simulate the grease drippings so commonly dropped especially by the steam locomotives. Even the rotten, really weathered ties in the museum yard that date to who knows when are still stained in the middle with crud.

Ryan - Loved the PC menu, but any menu for them needs a healthy helping of crow (pie?) We were having a chuckle the other day as the only road to come out the other side of the merger at least in name was the New Haven and the other two didn't want any part of it. And Inch - I'm not sure that was what they had in mind when they wanted to "merge". Waste of a lot of good stuff, no?   Well, I've got lots to do today again so I've gotta run. CUL, J.R.

Good morning all,

Snow storm yesterday was less than expected only 7" of snow, but last night the north winds hit and blew the snow into drifts and now everything is a mess.  Last night the Discovery Channel's Modern Marvels show did a good job on "America's Railroad".

Johnboy, tell us more about the track cleaning car, how does it work, Pictures??  I'm still thinking about building an Aztec type car.

Terry, very nice job!

Phil, yes that looks like a really good show, I'll be adding it to my DVR since I have to work bright and early on Friday.  Sounds like a good haul from the train show.

I found some web sites of interest:

Several forms and pocket manuals for the PRR used from 1940-1950 including souvenir and investor promotional material: http://prr.railfan.net/documents/

Several Kodachrome color slides from 1940-1950 in a searchable data base.  How dirty were the trackside buildings?  Searching by county is your best bet.  You can find it here: http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/

Saronna Terry- I was looking at your pics, thinking nice layout room, good backdrop, clean and well lit, etc, etc, and then I got to the last pic and I have to be honest with you- that is one of the best close up street scenes I've looked upon in a long while!

Very good work, the street looks great and the buildings have that "just right" feel to them. If the entire layout is as well done as this area, you have a pretty da**ed good layout going there!

Last weekend was a nightmare, sick animals, bad weather, broken things and broken dreams, but I did make it to the Ft Wayne Swap Meet on Sat. It was there that i found out about the Muncie Swap Meet, the one that would have been 40 miles closer, without the zero visibility fog and roads closed due to accidents, the one that was on at the same time as the Ft Wayne Show. I had checked the MR Coming Events page about a month ago, and I sure didn't see it listed. It sure could have saved some driving, cussing and wondering where the he..uh, heck I was time.

But I was lucky, 'cause gas went up to $3.19 a gal, I was concerned that it might stay affordable.

Bought 10 freight cars, and some Conrail engine designation stickers, the ones you see- or used to- under the cab windows of their units. And I saw a beautiful layout built on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I've never seen a better use of a piece of plywood.

For those of you interested in WWII history, this Fri at 10PM on the History Channel, there will (finally) be a show detailing the battles fought by U.S.S. Enterprise CV-6, the most decorated U.S. ship from WWII. It should be a great show about a very great ship and crew. Just a heads up.

Oh, and I have it on good authority from a GM&O employee- don't eat the fish- go with the steak.

The engine is an 8E the passenger car is # 337 and the observation car is number 338 not shown is a baggage car which I'm working on as need to clean rust off the trucks and wheels its green with orange trim where the others are green with maroon trim.

As far as running them really don't have room to set them up but hope to do a circle around xmas tree this year comming with them and run them then.

The G gauge really is the wifes its just an engine and a circle of track its a lil critter which for you non G its basicly a chopped sw-2 switcher. ( mental note get pic of lil critter ) by the way the engine in my signature is basicly 16" long

Whistling [:-^]

Good Evening Gang,

Who is all in here tonight?.  I heard that the local would be through in a short while, I guess that is why you are all sitting by the window.

Zoe, I'll have a root beer float, that will make me believe that spring is on it's way.

For those of you who read my last entry about that track cleaner and that are interested, I will give you the information I have.

It is called.  "Track Guard" Greatest track cleaner ever.  I paid $9.90 US. for two (2) of them.

The Chap's email address is   titocast@hotmail.com . That is where the paypal payment went to.      Where it says purchased from the name is "lascruxes".                                              Hope this gets you somewhere.  If not try "The Crossing Gate" in Brownsville, Texas. as that is the name on the instruction sheet. But no address shown and of course I have thrown the packing out.    Hey -- Lookey what I found.  I did come up with the packing envelope.  The return address is as follows.    A. del Cashillo,   3013 Canterbury Cr.,   Brownsville,  Texas,  78526,  USA.   There is a reason I am a pack rat............

I have to be up early again in the morning and I didn't sleep all that well last night. So I guess maybe I had better get started or at least headed towards bed.

Night all.   And say your prayers.Angel [angel] Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz]

Evening Gang: I spent the morning at the VA clinic geting the lab for my DR visit Thursday. They really do a good job there except when it comes to getting the lab. I waited about 1:45 for them to get to me. Otherwise everything went well.

The service tech came out this afternoon to check for the leak in Mary Ann's new washer. He ran a load and was not able to find any leaks. Gremlins I guess.

I took the blocks out from the layout. I figure there isn't much point in raising the layout if it will be moved. Also now I can get back to running trains once in awhile.

Well it is late for me so I'll say, Good Night All

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Not too warm today, although we did keep the a/c on.  The cool front is starting to come through now, and winds have picked up a bit.  Outside chance it could get down into the 50's tonight.  We'll see.

Although it wasn't too hot, it was very lazy out today.  For some reason (maybe just because I'm lazy) I got about zero done today, except for a couple of Zzz [zzz]  naps, of course!  But thanks for the kind words about the track painting.  Our only major accomplishment today was going to the supermarket for the main weekly grocery shopping.

Leftovers for lunch as we were trying to clean out the fridge a bit before the trip.  Maybe I should have ordered off Ryan's menu du jour.  But Fran did fix up a great banana bread, which I'm enjoying with my coffee tonight!

Rob - sorry about Stan's mother, especially as she was so close to your wife.  Yeah, I think you need to just suck it up and go to the funeral.  I expect it would mean a lot to your wife to have you there with her.

RT - hey, Buddy, you really have some unique pieces in your collection.

Paul - got your email, thanks.  I'll be in touch.  But the plans for the trip are basically what I outlined in my email.

Lee:  What era/location is your layout?
Loosely somewhere between 1945 and 1960, somewhere in Veracruz state, in the general area of Tuxpan.  They never wound up running trains through here in the real world, although there were always plans afoot to connect Tampico with Mexico City via a line that would run close to here.

Terry - thanks for posting the pix of the layout.  Looks like you have plenty of room.

I'm going to start building the center island in our kitchen....maybe that'll free up funds for ROW extension lumber!!!
You missed your opportunity to buy the expansion material as part of the same order.  Then all you'd have had to do is act surprised with all the material left over from the island project.

Ryan:  That is quite a tequila collection you had there, did you dispose of them by your own consumption or did you give them away.
I believe I still have over half of them still here packed away in a couple of cartons.  Nope no gifts, what isn't here any more went to a good cause.  I just don't drink as much tequila as I used to.  One reason is that down here on the hot coast, tequila just doesn't seem as appetizing as it did when we lived up in the cooler highlands.  And the other reason is that loss of sense of taste that I referred to earlier.  I have a much harder time distinguishing any differences in them nowadays, so it's not quite as interesting as it used to be.

CG Jim - glad your presentation went well this morning.  I learned to speak in front of groups by participating in the debate club when I was in high school.  It sure helped me out later in life/career.  Do they still have that kind of stuff in schools anymore?

That's about it from down here this evening.  Catch up with you tomorrow.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Okay, I figure I have at least 2 yesses, so here we go!Whistling [:-^]

Coming out of (future) staging below Spooner Yard. You can see the foam belowthe facia:

Next is Spooner, Wisc. This was called the Omaha X because 4 different lines branched here. Omaha for the Chicago, St, Paul, Mpls and Omaha RR, a subsidiary of the C&NW:

Heading south out of Spooner we'll take the east leg of Chicago Jct.( That's the real name, of a station map I got at the Co. Courthouse.) The west leg goes to St. Pual,MN.

Next stop is Sarona, WI,:

So? Anybody? What do ya think!??

& the Panned Filet Sole, please & thanks.

***Jeffrey, looks like someone on that railroad is apt to lose their job if such carnage continues.Laugh [(-D]

***Johnboy, sounds like a great idea for a cleaning car. I could see having several in a row for a MOW train. Perhaps have one car could have two small separate strips of leather that could then be soaked in a cleaner, followed by a couple of the ones you describe? Sure like the price!

Afternoon all.

It's cloudy out here in Seattle, but a nice 50*s.

PC: That sounds good.

Sue: By chance, are you going to the Trains Trains and More Trains show in Puyallup? I know I will be there. Probably with the 4DHOMODSIG group. To find me? Look for someone running some UP big steam.

Later all.

Here in Tampa it threatens to rain but probably wont. Meanwhile my little sister takes her anger out by screaming into a pot; no I don't like it, but it beats my ears and face any day.

Fries with that, Zoe.

It just occured to me I have no idea what she is angry about.

Meanwhile I have a question for everyone: Is there any real advantage in  Bachmann E-Z track? Are there any realistic crossings for it, taking into account the fact that you could build one off the power peices. But I was thinking of something that has working lights and red gates found at an LHS.

Until then, railroadnut out.

Along the same lines, I grew a set and finally posted a pic on the photo FORUM thing. Got a nice response and a request to "post away"I was pleasantly suprised. Guess I figured the powers that be would point out the stuff I thought was not so good!

Good Afternoon Crew,

Chloe, when you are back this way, I will order the Sirloin, Onion Rings, Sweet potatoe and a ginger muffin with a cranberry chaser today,  Ryan, Chef [C=:-)]recommended this to me, and you know he is a class act. Thanks. And by the way, you are looking as cute as ever.Dinner [dinner]

Garry,  That was a super tutorial on rock strata. I really anjoyed that and appreciated your effort. And as  Ryan did, I have it tucked away in my favorites and will use it before long.Yeah!! [yeah]

The last free time I have had, I have spent rebuilding a couple of cabeese that found a shorter way to the caboose track than staying on the tracks. Boy when they hit the floor they really show you the number of pieces in their make-up. But with another hour they will be back to the way they were (close).Angry [:(!]Banged Head [banghead]

The construction of the snow shed it self is finished will now put some retaining wall on the side of the mountain that it fits against and mould in a platform in the enbankment below the track to support the base of it.  It really looks great. I will get some more time to get that photo bucket account and show you folks.Shy [8)]

We have a great day going on here today. No wind, some melting happening, the feel of spring in the air. No complaints from the Great White North.    Sure hope this continues down your way as it seems as those south of the lakes and into the Big Apple are still getting the messy end of the stick.Sad [:(]

There has been lots of talk about track cleaning cars. I've always wanted to mention this but kept forgetting when I got on. Don't have it in front of me as I am at work, but, I purchased a couple of them  from a chap in Texas .  They are a strip of leather that faces down (rough side down) and gets wider going down from the car to the track, so that at the track it covers both rails. and it has a lead weight that rides on top of the leather that rides on the track.             It attaches with double sided tape ( but I put in a screw as well.)  I mounted one on a four bay hopper, making sure that the weight can go up between the bays and not catch on them. The other one I mounted on a REA reefer that I normally run on my passenger trains.   He suggests that they be put on box cars, but I really like it on the hopper as it isn't so visible. They work going forward and backward. If installed properly they do not catch as you think they might when going backward.

And the price was right( $4.00 approx)  and you could easily make them yourself. And they really work. I run the hopper behind a walthers slider car and I do not believe that anything more is required. The track is "CLEAN".Wow!! [wow]

If any of you are interested send me an e-mail and I will give you his contact info.

Prayers and blessings to all in need.Angel [angel]

Keep smiling, it looks good on ya.

Hi Zoe, I'll have one of Ryan's Steaks from the menu, please, with the salad, kernel corn and the chocolate pudding dessert, and a glass of Dr. Pepper. Thanks! Dinner [dinner]

Gee, Jeff, looks like that RR needs some hefty-duty insurance! Shock [:O] I'd second Jerry's comments on the poor tower operator on that shift....

Presentation went well this morning - and had a good turnout (9) show up. Big Smile [:D] Good participation from a few, and I covered most all of the material (and what I didn't cover was in handouts they can read at home).

You wouldn't guess it, but when I was in my junior year of high school (military school, and no, I wasn't that bad), they had a custom of certain days when junior and seniors were supposed to give a speech in front of the whole school and teachers (under 500 by a bit). Well, I didn't know (it was my first year there) that the expectation was that juniors were supposed to give their speeches standing out away from the podium, while seniors got to stand at the podium (and have a little cover, so to speak). I was the only junior with two or three seniors that day, so I followed their lead and gave my speech from behind the podium(!). Got talked to by the headmaster or somebody, but I didn't know, so I never had to go back and re-give it free-standing. I was pretty bashful in high school or younger, but ended up in college going into teaching (go figure!). Talk about strange things, huh? Wink [;)] Nowadays, it doesn't bother me much at all, other than the usual mild nervousness before/during.

Okay, enough yacking from me, time to get to business on my steak and lunch! Smile [:)]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Hello everybody...

There's Jeff .........having fun with his hobby.... I like that concept. ... Some HO scale people may not have been having fun, however, as the derailed caboose approached them!

Ryan, do they honor those GM&O prices today? If so, I'll take home some doggie bags filled with some of those dinners. (Our family calls them "doggie wags".)

Again, I'm glad people liked the rock thread. I did add a page to show how I got gound cover into the rocks.

Morning folks!

It looks like we will get some good rainfall today, more than just a few drops, and maybe even a few inches of much needed moisture for the drought stricken areas of the southeast regions. First time in a long time I have heard thunder and seen some lightening too. Radar shows a long line of showers and storms in red, yellow, and dark green...we need it!

Ozark now I get it, Star Wars goes Back to the Future.... Oh, and nice weathering on those trailers too!

Ed Aloha Oahu Pork sounds like a great meal, set me up for a plate too! Have a safe and fun trip to the City! The rail painting looks great! That is quite a tequila collection you had there, did you dispose of them by your own consumption or did you give them away. Drink I hope!

Rob sorry to hear about Stan's mom, thoughts and prayers for you, your wife, and the family.

Garry I finally found your rock strata thread, great information there, I've saved the link and I will be referring back to it for future reference.

Yikes Jeff! Another accident...I hope they have good insurance....

Today one of the tower operators was saying that he always wanted to get a close look at the bottom of a bay window caboose. What's that old saying? Be careful what you wish for? The caboose had detached from a train and was hit by another train and derailed, coming to rest wedged between the lead locomotive and the interlocking tower.

Morning all!

Another beautiful day in central Indiana!  Last night we had falling slush from the sky.  Not rain.....not snow.......somewhere in between.  It was slush, falling from the sky.  Made my drive home from school rather, ummmmm, interesting!  Now it's snowing lightly and the temps are dropping to the mid 20's.

Saw something on my way in this morning that you don't see a lot around here.  Now remember, this is CSX / NS country.  I saw a UP loco on point followed by a KCS and three more UP's all lugging on a container train.  Now we see UP once in a while, but not a ton.  We get KCS once or twice a year, but to have all of that and not a CSX or NS in sight?  Never!  They were headed to Indianapolis from Anderson area.  Of course, I didn't have my camera!

Well, I have to head home this evening to help guide my son in the fine art of building a pinewood derby car.  Should be fun, huh?

Also, we're getting ready for my wife to go have her next surgery.  She's had one knee rebuilt, so now it's time for the other.  I just wish she didn't have to go through all this.  It hurts her so much, ya know?  Prayers for her!

Matter of fact, prayers for all those in need!  Yeah, thats you too!

Rob, it's hard to lose those close to us.  My condolences to your wife.

Hoople, Vinny and his boys are already looking for you!  I'll see if I can head them off!

Later!

Morning, Cloe, I'll go with the buffet today.

ROB: got your PM. It's HO but I have to find it first!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]If and when I do I'll send it off to you.Sorry to hear about Stan's mom.

COLBY: You're getting some progress there! It's always better to fix problems sooner than later,Huh!?

OZARK: nice pics!

ED: sounds like a fun way to spend a few days. The track looks good to me.

My son took pics of the whole layout, kind of a ROW tour. Would you guys be interested in seeing it? It's about 8-10 pics.

Along the same lines, I grew a set and finally posted a pic on the photo FORUM thing. Got a nice response and a request to "post away"I was pleasantly suprised. Guess I figured the powers that be would point out the stuff I thought was not so good!

Today I'm going to start building the center island in our kitchen.Suprise the CFO when she gets home tonite.Maybe that'll free up funds for ROW extension lumber!!!Whistling [:-^]

That's all from balmy No. Wisconsin(18f).

Morning, Zoe! I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ,

cup of coffee in a Santa Fe mug,

and one of those ham, egg and cheese things, please.

Thanks! Cooler this morning, 37 F (3 C) and dropping temps with (very) scattered flurries/rain (few flurries are mostly north of us, rain for the rest of our area) and cooling to about 25 F (-4 C) tonight. They're predicting 40 percent chance of snow, but no particular accumulation, just some cold. Guess Johnboy and CN Charlie are giving us a break this time. Wink [;)]

OzarkBelt, more nice photos there! Thumbs Up [tup] Nice touch with Darth.Cool [8D]

Garry, nice clinic on the rockmaking! Yeah!! [yeah]

Today's my mini-seminar at w**k, on anger managment, so say a few for me to make some sense in my presentation...

Watching the bank account with prayers for a long 'float' - this past paycheck got stretched exceedingly tight. Had some large expenses (most of which got covered, but then had rent, car payment, and student loan payment). If I get through to payday, I will resume breathing again. (Partly my doing - should've likely asked the student loan agency for a forbearance for 30 days, but I for some reason went ahead and authorized that payment) I will leave matters in the Big Hands (and I don't mean that insurance company).

At MRR club meeting last night there were a lot of tops on the benchwork (they had a work day on Saturday, but I didn't make that one), and our layout design and electronics guru Kevin had come up with a way to connect the back staging yard to the main layout with a simpler route (without the wye we originally had in the initial design). He had most of the mainline and sidings on the first big table drawn (centerlines), so that'll be ready for roadbed now. We also discussed a possible new member (but I'm not so sure on him - he doesn't seem to disclose much about himself and has moved to this area from further north and doesn't appear to have a job, so wondering how he'll be able to afford the dues).

Well, now that I've had breakfast, I better get going so I can be ready for the presentation this morning. Prayers for the ailing (including our CFO's under the weather) and grieving and those in need of strengthening or comfort. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Blessings,
