Well last night was something else! Dick remember how I said don't believe all you read? Well "Da Weather Man" sure botched this one and couldn't predict the winner of a one man race!! Gales 45-55 my caboose! Supper time was suppose to see 55 kts Try 80! then 70, then 60 and finally 50 at about three this morning and finally leveled out at 40 at day break. Good thing it was dark at the height of the storm as we couldn't see the waves which was probably a good thing. looking at the manuals and the fact we were in about 150' of water I suspect we saw a few 45-50'footers last night. Lets just say we have no Jack Staff to hoist the jack on the bow anymore
Dick: Tell me... the system that you just had... How much grief will we get? I figure looking at the NOAA site it should be reasonable as the low looks like it will fill blow its self out. Do you concur?
Der John: I concur with 3 though I think a tad more lime shad maybe in order, especially at the high water mark then go darker as you go down to the low water mark.
Anyway guys its too lumpy to continue so I'll stop by later.

Hey all!
Bitter cold temperatures and gusty winds greeted me as I headed into work this morning. Temperatures are about 20-30 degrees colder this morning vs. what we were seeing yesterday morning. Highs will only hit the mid 30's. All in all, a great day to stay inside! Too bad I have to do the work and school thing today!
Well, the wife continues to improve. Her leg is very slowly healing. We were able to go out to dinner the other night. It was good for her to get out. I think she's starting to go a little stir crazy laying in bed all day every day!

Indiana Phil, sounds like you got busy for a while there. We didn't lose our power last night that I can tell, but our power distribution center for where I live is just over the hill behind me, so it doesn't happen too often (unless the whole city is losing it). I'm sure things do get hectic at your w**kplace when the power goes out. Good to hear that more space for your layout is on the way - and AmyJo is cheering you on (or would that be slave-driving? ).

Just passing through on my way back to bed. Wife had to leave to take her mom to the Doc, so I got the gate for her. Both Wind Advisory & Fire Weather Advisory here. Always strikes me as odd how we can have the fire one right after a real good rain. Water tanks are full again.

Jeffrey- The DFD just headed out to a report of the lines down in a neighboring county, but it turns out it's farther away than first reported, so they are disregarding and heading back to the station. Around here, they don't let the firetrucks go out without a destination, too little money and too much gas used would be my guess.
They lights went out again a few times after the post I made, looks like it's gonna be a blustery day, so we might have more outages.

I was typing a reply to another post a bit ago and bang, the lights went out. And around here, when the lights go out, alarms come on, the phones strat ringing and radio traffic goes nutz. So for the next 45 minutes, I had to do my job instead of spending Sun night like I should, perusing the forums!
I guessing the light went out due to the wind, it's the same storm everyone else has been talking about here. 2 years ago we had an ice storm with high winds, and the grid hasn't been up to snuff since. At least thats what I'm telling everybody. Our town has around 800-900 people, we patrol a larger area due to combined dispatching, but altogether I'll bet we don't have more than 2500 folks about. So it's always a surprise when you get 80-100 calls at 0040 on a Monday AM!
Our room addition is coming along nicely, soon we'll be able to turn the (current) bedroom into a hobby room, and soon I'll be able to make trains move again under their own power. We spent Fri, Sat and today insulating, wiring, drywalling and mudding. Still, moving right along, and looking forward to working on a layout. Amyjo is wanting me to do it more than I am, and thats saying something! Looks like I'll have a chance for an around the walls shelf, a total of maybe 16-18' of trackwork. Yeah, life is good.
Fergie- take care aww hell, everybody take care. Fergie probably isn't in any more danger than Paul working on the farm, or Jeff recovering in La, or Flip down in Hurricane alley! We all think other people are in dangerous lines of work (or play), and then you hear about the 45 year old mother of 3 killed by a trailer coming loose from a truck heading north when she was heading south. You ALL be careful in whatever you're doing.
Even Ed could be bludgeoned to insensibility by a crazed Valencia! Indeed, it's just a nutty, crazee world!

Hope everyone has had a decent week-end and that some of the weather forcasts were wrong. Boy I hate shovelling snow, but they say moree is on the way for tomorrow evening, but it will be milder so it will get darn slippery.

I just returned from a model train show I attended today in Tennessee. I got a deal! I bought a Stewart FT A/B set, new in box for $32.00. I like deals. I picked up a few miscellaneous other items, too.

Good evening Diners: We came back from the concert before dinner as the road going was slippery over the mountain, and we didn't want it to freeze on us after dark. Yes we have snows, but there is no cell reception (not that we have one - that stretch is the only point we can see for having one - if that's not too obtuse!) i.e. it's a bit deserted, and Kris;' mom (91) was with us.

Been busy all weekend with the Christmas prep thing driving from one store to another so its great just to pop in this evening for a relaxing cup of coffee. I guess that should be a decaf if it really is to be relaxing.
Good grief Fergie, 40 knots and 30' seas!! I sail on Lake Winnipeg and it is the storm on the century when we're out in 25 knots and 8'. Double reefed main and storm jib. Don't go out much when it is blowing now as the 2 dogs we have get sea sick. At least they have the good sense to go over the rail.
We just got a clip from that big storm that is sweeping across to the south but it is still cold and looks like it will stay that way. Went the car wash yesterday as it needed a bath but it was closed due to the cold.
Nice work on those 2 diesels Jeff! That little SW1000 looks good.
Well my 2 foot warmers want outside so I'll say goodnight for now.

I got out of work at 7 and thought it was all ready snowing. But it was just the mill snow 1/2 mile down the road and it was all gone. Had to go to Wally World my daughter had to print some pics for her science project. So we made sure we had everything in case we get the snow they say we will. Started the snow blower and cleaned up the yard, kids filled the bird feeder.
Fergie you are a far better sailor than I 30 ft seas I will pass on. My father was on a sub chaser in WW2 and the first trip down the eastern sea board every one was sea sick except for the bosun and cap. of the boat.
Jim I think you passed the flu bug north went to work yesterday and had to leave to sick to continue and the heat and humidity did me in.

Bob at least you got the engine in place we are not supposed to get the snow till midnight.
Paul that is the only problem I see with the south the extreme swings in temp. hot one day then cold the next my sinus play h--- on me in Maine I cannot imagine what it would be like in the south.
Has any one heard from Allen of the Between a Rock and a Hardspot RR have not heard from him for awhile. THe last post he had said he was doing some rehab for physical issues.

How many degrees of the specific radius will the loco or cars travel? Since (in HO for these examples) if you have a short stretch, of say, 18" radius track (and 10 degrees or 15 degrees of curve), you could get an 85' heavyweight passenger car to go around it, so long as the adjoining track was of wider radius or even straight (the so-called 'infinite' radius ). But in the case of Rob's wife's layout, since the DeWitt isn't a very 'long' loco, any difference in the degree of curve that you have isn't noticeable.

I got the four walls for my church cut tonight (well, rough cut - hard to maintain an even, straight line across board and batten). I'll sand the edges nice and smooth one of the evenings this week. Still need to cut out the walls of the bell tower/vestibule, too. But got it started -
I'll head out for now. Got some stuff for w**k to finish up so I'm sure it gets turned in tomorrow (and counts for next Friday's payday).

Evening Gang: Did I say it was warm here? About 3pm it changed. Now it's cold and getting colder. No A/C tonight maybe the space heater though. Right now I'm thinking I may just go to bed and pull the covers up tight. I've got a Witney 4 point blanket on the bed and I may add another. I'd get the buffalo robe out but Mary Ann would run me out of the house, then I'd really need it.
I guess that you guys in the northeast are going to get it. There is a storm heading from the lakes in your direction. I wouldn't mind some snow here. By the way has anyone heard from Noah, our snow shoveling guru?
I think that I'll skip on out and read the lastest Trains and Model Railroader. I keep hearing them complain about the airlines shutting down because of weather. Doesn't anyone get it. Railroad passenger trains don't shut down for weather.

Well, Rob, if you have straight (or wider) curves on either side of that, it will help, but the main difference (I would think) would be that the longer the degrees, the longer that the loco and cars are going through the curve, right? Least ways, from what I remember of math and geometry...
I set that up (13.750" X 30 degrees, and 13.750" X 45 degrees) in my layout design program like this:
The top curve is the 30 degree range at 13.750" radius, the one below that is 45 degree range at 13.750" radius, and the bottom is the 30 degree range curve overlaid on top of the 45 degree curve (centerlines about on top of each other). Hope that helps clarify things, Rob. As others said, you could use easement curves into the 13.750" curves. But then again, the DeWitt engine probably has a much shorter turn radius than even an 0-6-0T, from pics of the two locos that I've seen...
We've had rain much of the day, from misting as I was heading into church, to pouring down some as I left church about mid-morning or so, and it appears to be almost stopped for now. It's a balmy 63 F currently - bad as Paul's weather! Good day for staying inside and working on the MRR stuff. (Well, except for Fergie, who's rocking and rolling out there off the Banks... - may you get back to shore without any mishaps!)
Lee, if you have the room for it, 42" sounds like a very nice curve (you're in HO, right?). If I had more room, I would probably be using comfy curves like that.
