Good morning diners!
Sausage, eggs over medium, grits, whole wheat toast, and coffee, please. Apple butter for the toast. (You never sausage good food.)
It's sunny and 16 degrees this morning. 16 degrees???? Hey, send that stuff back north, please!
I intend to work on the layout again today.
Happy Model Railroading!

See! I'm just spurring you and Paul on to all kinds of work, huh? Got him to cleanin' his train room the other day! You're welcome!

Mornin' all!
Mighty nippy out there this morning! It was a whole 1, count it, 1 degree out there when I first headed out! My radiator was frozen solid! I'm still trying to get it unstuck! I go out, start it up, watch the heat needle climb 3/4 of the way, then shut her down. Yeah, I'm late to work, I'll have to drain the radiator and refill with new anti-freeze, yeah, it's shaping up to be a real fun day! And it's not supposed to get a lot warmer til this weekend either.
Today: breezy & cold with a few flurries - high 18Tonight: partly cloudy & very cold - low 6
Sounds lovely, huh?
I hear a few of you got some snow yesterday! We got some, but then it got too cold to snow.
Well, I'm heading back out to try it again!
Later!
Brrrr, Zoe, I need a nice hot cup of coffee, please! It's not Ontario temps here today, but 15 F with 11 mph winds gives us a (brrrrrrrr!!) wind chill of 2 F. I'll be ready when Saturday gets here with temps (allegedly) supposed to be in the 50's (F) range. Now that will seem like a heat wave, CNCharlie!
NJ Bob/Foul Rift, I like your SW7 (and the paint job on it). Did you do some more detailing, perhaps? I noticed the air tanks on top, and wasn't sure if you'd added some more details, too. Nice job!
Well, I see that my car's windshield is about thawed out, so I'll be heading for w**k. Everyone stay warm, with all of you in the Snow Belt there... See everyone later!
Good morning all,
26F Wind 31MPH Feels like 10F.
About 6" of snow fell last night and another 4" is predicted for today. I have to take William back to Toledo today where he will spend a night with his Grandparents, and then they will run him back home to MI. Only got to visit with my daughter for a little bit this year, she works full time and is going to Collage full time.
CN Charlie, I was looking over a map of Canada last night and there is some interesting names; Yellow Knife, beaver falls, Big Beaverhouse. Maybe you can mold 3 large boulders on one of your hills and call it Three Rocks, ONT. Or maybe the Indian word for three hills or something. Good luck.

Good Morning All,
34F this morning overcast and flurries predicted through the day. Feels colder though. Back to a routine today and for sure I'm glad it's a short week and not all the staff is back from their trips anyway.
Bob - Yes some of my track ended up superelevated or at least I did the sub roadbed so poorly it tilted - worked for me. No need to worry driving through the New York are with Boston stuff. We're much more tolerant here and probably wouldn't do more than run you onto the shoulder of the road (just kidding). Did you realize that the first few Boston stadiums were built adjacent to the NEW YORK New Haven and Hartford yards?
NJBob - let us know what you find out about the origins of Foul Rift Since you're in central NJ we'll assume none of the smell NJ jokes apply. With several Bobs and Robs here we'll need to come up with a catchy nickname for you so you don't get lost in the shuffle.
The painting went alright last night but I'm going to remove the new paint on the HW diner and start over because I don't like the shade of gray I ended up with. Sounds like another trip to the LHS is in the works, no? It's tough anyway because I don't think any color pics exist of what I want to do so I've gotta wing it to come up with a "light silver gray". The Athearns came out ok though so I can continue with those. New trucks and couplers should help a bunch as will some interior bits. Well, time to get crackin here in the shop. Lots to do and the first race weekend is now only 6 weeks off. CUL, (old radio term as in See You Later), J.R.

Hello everyone......
Hot cider please. I worked on the layout a bit this afternoon. I'm adding to the layout as I started before the holidays. It has definately cooled off here.
Cheers everyone!
Some chamomile tea, please & thank you.
***Sue, if you count working on the table frame, then I started my layout "tonight". No legs or top on it yet, but did glue & screw the frame parts together. Hey, it's a start.
***Ed, I'm impressed with your new years start. Keep it going!
***FoulRift, that's a cool name & theme. I like the loco, too.
Well, gotta get up early in the AM to make a hay run, so calling it a night here. Take care all. Rob
Just wanted to be one of the last to wish all a happy new year! Hope 08 is better than all the rest combined.
Been so busy these past few weeks, w**k is the only place to get a break, and now even that has gotten busy. We have a new chief, I'm working with the old chief on midnights, and it seems everybody wants to wait and talk to him about their problems.
We picked up 3-4 inches of snow overnight, and today Amyjo, me and the nephew from Hawai'i and 3 nieces played football in the churchyard to welcome in the new year. We played for about 40 minutes, and the wind chill was in single digits. We (Da BEARS) won over them (the colts) 7-0. We all went in to G'pa's house and warmed ourselves up by the wood stove for the next hour or so. We have had between 1 and 5 houseguests each night for the past week or two, and in a small trailer, it gets a bit hectic. All of the kids are with another aunt tonight, so Amyjo is having the great pleasure of an empty house all night!
We took one aunt to Ft Wayne International the other AM, I wish all the flights I dealt with-coming or going- went through there. Drive north, turn left and your done. Much less hassle than Indy. Takes 3-6 hours to get someone at Indy back home, depending on time and traffic, we dropped her off and were home in 2 hours flat. Ahhh, the good life. Planned on making a day of it in the big city, checking out Phil's Hobby etc, but it was just before 0600 when we dropped her off, and it's tough to kill 4-5 hours at IHOP! Oh well, there's a train show there on the 16th of Feb, plan on making it anyway, so no big loss.
We take Hawai'i boy to Indy Int Sat AM, I think we are going to head down Fri night and stay with another aunt and uncle who live just a few miles from the airport, so it might not be so bad, and it has to be better than getting up at 0400 to head down there. We do plan to hit the Odyssey Map store and a few other places later that day. Might even find a train store to look at, as after we send him home is when I get to start on the hobby room, and then the layout! WOOOO HOOOO!
Hope y'all had a safe and fun holiday season, and we'll be a talkin' to ya.
Jim-as a matter of fact my one diesel-an SW7 is mostly black.Gray on top, black the rest of the way down with a yellow stripe on the bottom
Ed-yes,I was on Train Board for a while then left.
Happy New Year fellow diners!
It seems that brussel sprouts are getting a bad rap here but I'll have a large helping please Chloe along with some roast chicken please. I do like them but I never get them at home as my wife hates them and she's in charge of the kitchen. I've learned never to question that or I might wind up having to eat my own cooking and that is a fate that makes me shudder.
Bob mentioned that Walthers did a CN caboose a while back, last year in fact. I have one and it is quite nice. What I need is a CP caboose but I can wait a couple of months as Truline Trains is coming out with one that will suit my '50s era layout. I have managed to do a little scenery on the layout over the past couple of days. My one hill has spawned 2 others but I have to quit now otherwise there won't be room for the little village. It doesn't have a name yet and Three Hills isn't in the running. Besides there is a town of that name in Alberta and my village is in Ontario. Perhaps something like Upper Chuffton. Has a steam era ring to it don't you think?
I also completed a PK2 stock car kit this evening and I surprised myself by actually getting all 36 grab irons on without a mental break-down. It was so much fun I've ordered a PK2 box car kit.
As is customary I can't post a message without mentioning the weather. It seems most of us are somewhat fixated on the weather and why not I say. I just checked the Environment Canada forecast and can hardly believe what I read. It is supposed to be +1C(+34F) here on Saturday! A heat wave! Summer must be just around the corner! Well in May if we're lucky. Nevertheless it will seem good at this time of year. I have to say that I get somewhat suspicious of the weather man. It often seems that when there is a good forecast for the weekend there is an unfortunate downturn the closer the weekend gets. I think weather forecasters have a slightly sadistic streak.
Well I better sign off now as its back to work tomorrow.
CN Charlie
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful day down here in Paradise. We started off the New Year with a cold front blowing in this morning. Temps probably never got above the mid-60's, and should be down in the low 50's tonight. Could get into the 40's by tomorrow night, but won't get any lower. Also had a light (and much needed) rain throughout the day. Time to break out the sweaters as there's no heating system in most houses down here.
At least the coffee (from the mountains of Veracruz, of course) is excellent tonight. Hot, strong and flavorful.
It's interesting to see how different people or areas have different traditional meals for New Year's. We had our usual "Zacahuitl", which I refer to as "The tamale that ate Chicago". It's a mixture of coarse ground corn meal, pork, sauce (tomatos, chilis, spices) and lard. Gets mixed up, wrapped up in several layers (outside layer is banana leaves), and baked overnight outside in a beehive type oven. We made two of them, each one weighing in at about 30-33 pounds. That's a chunk of food. But between our extended family, plus my 3 sister-in-laws and their families, plus a few visitors, a good portion of that disappeared.
Rob: ...sounds like a good Resolution that will be easily achievable...
FoulRift / Bob - Welcome to the diner (aka The Coffee Shop). Good luck with your New Year's resolution. It's much more of a commitment than mine. Your username sounds familiar. Haven't we met up before on another model railroad forum? Ever been over on TrainBoard?
Fergie:There's logic in this though I would have opted for Brussel Sprouts...
Avenger - Welcome to the Coffee Shop (Diner), or have you been here before and I just missed it?
That's about it from down here this evening.
Hasta mañana,
Ed
Evening, Chloe - how about a hot fudge sundae
and a cup of hot cocoa for me, please?
Thanks! , looks like I'm covering dessert (and possibly breakfast as well). Chow down, folks!
DerJohn and Mitch, my belated wishes for both of you. Hope it was great (sounded like it) for each of you and your honeys.
Currently in Cape Girardeau, we're at 23 F (-5 C) with a wind chill of 8 F (-13 C), wind gusts in the 18-20 mph range (30 kmph) (pretty breezy earlier today, too), and supposed to 16 F (-9 C) through the night. But no snow [Yay!] - we've sent that to the north and east of us, so Inch, Jerry, Lee, PC and the rest of our Ohio Valley residents, better get ready for more white stuff - sheesh! And I hate to think of what kind of lake effect snow you'll be getting. At least, you might be able to share bragging rights with Fergie on the snow...
Congrats to LocoIndy76 and your wife on the new baby! Hope everyone is doing okay and resting up by now.
Good to see Lupo's dropped by - haven't seen you in a while, so feel free to come by again soon. We miss ya!
So Rob, sounds like you've been playing in the manure pile again, huh? About like the joke about the kid who wants a pony and comes out of the house to find such a pile... Good that your ponds(pond?) is getting some water in them (it) again.
Fergie, given your other names in that music list, Buble is not at all suprising! Frank's peak popularity was a bit before I remember, but from what I'd heard of Sinatra, and then hearing Buble, Michael does a good job in that style.
Sue, really liked your and Larry's work - looks excellent - like your cows, too!
to the Diner, FoulRift/NJ Bob! So, are your locos all black?
And also to Avenger. So, tell us a bit about your layout (or ideas for one, if you're like Rob and in the planning stage) - scale, time period, modeling a favorite RR line or freelancing it like me, etc. Nosy Inquiring minds and all that...

and Amen, PC! But I'd say it's almost a tie between those two foods...
Bob K., glad you made it back home safely from your trip. Maybe next trip, you could get a temporary NY sticker for the back of your SUV (just big enough to cover the other stickers, for insurance's sake)?
Good to see you again, Chuck & Kathy! Good that you have some more room available for the layout.
Linda left earlier today, a bit disappointed that I don't think there's any chance of 'us' ever working long-term. Wish she could feel better about herself and her life as is, but the hard reality is, I can't make it happen for her.
Otherwise, New Year's Eve was pretty good. No blackeyed peas (thanks for the explanation of it, Jeff!), though. Drove out to Daniel (one of the church singles group members)'s farm, where the party was, and they had variety of food, couple of different games (anybody ever play Farkle?), and some good visiting. Then a bit before midnight, we went outside near one of Daniel's sheds (metal one), and he set off a couple of big fireworks (big Roman candle-type, shooting airbursts, etc.). Slept in this morning till about 9 something.
Getting my (sick and out of commission for a while) laptop ready to send off tomorrow for repair estimate. It'll be good to get it back in full working order when the shop gets it done.
It's me again - just waiting for the paint to dry and thought I'd log back in. Foul Rift is an interesting road name sort of like Obtuse Rocks Rd in New Milford up the road fom us, but no match for some English road names none of which I can recall just now. What is the history behind the name Bob?
Turns out I had stashed away a HW New Haven diner in Black and Red and can now paint strip it and convert it to the early silver/gray with green window band used on the premier trains before the streamlined diners came on line. Now all I need is a way to make American Flyer coaches and I'm home free. Wish me luck - I'm still trying to figure out this airbrush thing.
Did finally get my lobby partition up and finished enough to go home. Still need to do the trims, door and baseboard paint (I hate painting wood, but the rest is already painted and I need to make it match. I even went so far as to have my house sandblasted to get the paint off the cedar shakes but that is another story entirely.) CUL, J.R.
Lee and everyone-thatnks for the warm welcome.
As far as the name Foul Rift goes-here in West Central Jersey there is a road I pass fairly often called Foul Rift Road. It seemed unusual so I deceided to use it as a screen name. The reaper I found while looking for smiles.I liked it also so I then put the two together for the name of my railroad. And if that name isn't strange enough there is a road called Shades of Death Road. I kid you not-it's for real.So much so that it has been written up in the papers not so much for the name but because the street has been stolen many times. Sorry for the history lesson but I thought you all might be interested.
Just got back from mother-in-laws. Had a nice dinner but now I'm ready for dessert. How about some coffee and a dish of chocolate ice cream? That would hit the spot. Then it's time to do a little work a HO structure I have in mind.Bob
Oh, hey, Sue......I meant to tell you the other day, that work you and Larry have been up to.....
Hey, good to see you!
Goin' OK I see! Thats good!

Yeah, it's true. Things are getting back to normal though.
Guess your wife is much better. Hope she was able to enjoy the holidays. Really got'a watch taking those meds.
Yeah, she's doing much better. Might be able to start trying to walk in a week or two. I got her one of those daily meds containers that break it down by the hour, but until the other day she just wouldn't use it. She said she didn't want to feel old. Now she has decided that maybe feeling old beats the way she felt the other day!
So, you're not thinking of switching scales (from a forum post) are you? You have quite a good sized layout, even though you went to the "dark side", there's no going back as they say.
No, no, no! It was an academic question. I like my little trains!
Rob, When are you starting on your layout? If you don't get started during the winter, you will get to busy with summer farm chores.
Bob, Sounds like you had a great Christmas. The fluffy trees are Aggro trees, which look similar to the fir trees that are well spaced on our place. The tapered bottle brush trees were labeled fir trees, but are shaped more like plantation trees or cedars, so they are nice for variety. I just bought a new bag of 60 that I will need to add ground foam to because the quality is not that of the first bag. Yes, I to use scissors to change the shape some.
Dick, My number came up to check out White Cascades at the library during the holidays. Larry took the message and didn't write it down. By the time I checked in, the hold had expired. I am going to try an interlibrary loan to see if I can get a sound recording.
Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you.
High winds with a deep freeze tonight and again tomorrow night. Will need to make a hay run sometime tomorrow, high winds or not. Have the fires roaring in the cabin to protect the pipes. Wife & I spent much of the day in there cleaning the place up. Still much to do. Tonight I'll return to cleaning up the dungeon and maybe glue & screw the train table parts together.
Hope everyone is doing well. Rob
This must be the bigest diner in the world huh guys?
a cup of coffe please. Oh, yes caafinated. Did I pernounce that wrong? Workin' on my IHC NYC passenger cars. Making them Have kadee nun 5 couplers while still going round 22" curves.
Yes, a slice of apple pie would be nice.

HI ALL:
We wish all of you a HAPPY NEW YEAR .Kathy and I had a very good Christmass and now a good new year. Kid next door[son] just left for Quartzite to sell his soap 33ft trailer and new dodge 350diesel 4 wheel [christmass] present from us. Am trying to figure out how to send pictures and drawings, don't have it rite yet, will keep trying. Added 156gig to memory so i'm updated according to kid next door. movies only take about 30min..
got the garage a little cleaner so that i can start a little bit of layout here and than transfer to big bldg. kathy doing much better, i've got a app. with dr about heart problems. why does this happen when we get older and are having more fun playing with trains???????
Prayers and friday morn mass for all
Chuck and Kathy
Here's wishing a happy new year to everyone.
I see we have a few Birthdays also. Happy Birthday!!! Making me feel old, naah, even a 54, I'm in good shape and still feel young.
Just got back from NJ the other day. This trip has become a tradition over the past 20 years. my children always loved their 2nd Christmas in New Jersey with my wife's family. This year it was at my sister-in-law's in Marshall Creek,PA. (Real close to Strasberg, a plus). Actually ended up to be a nice visit. Was interesting watching the Pats/ Giants game surrounded by all those NY fans...Hmmm glad they're family. And to drive around NY and NJ w/ a Red Sox and Patriots sticker on the back window of the SUV is dangerous to say the least.
Will be kicking off the new year with a real nice job on that custom home,(the one w/ the Caravan tobogan run for a driveway). will be doing kitchen, Anderson windows throughout, hardwood floors and an entry design of arches and columns, and some TLC all over the place. It will keep me pretty busy, but I do hope to get in some scenery work at the club.
PC: I'm sorry to hear about Maggie, they do become part of the family. Guess your wife is much better. Hope she was able to enjoy the holidays. Really got'a watch taking those meds. So, you're not thinking of switching scales (from a forum post) are you? You have quite a good sized layout, even though you went to the "dark side", there's no going back as they say.
Mitch: Y' know long ago that AHM was the "Cat's Meow" in that Chessie. They do run awful. Well you have 3 of the SD35's to pick from in Chessie in Atlas Master, and don't forget about B&O blue or WM Circus. Those ran along with them. There's none in this shot, they're all out on helper service.
Nice shots of that OC with the Conrail. and a Happy Birthday to you.
Dick: I think you're getting the snow up your way. South of Boston it keeps turning to rain, that's not a bad thing. So, my daughter just bought a D200 body from the Photo Dept. head at Northeastern. I guess he needed to chase the latest and best. Good for her, and I get her D70 body.It does have some internal formating issues, but I don't care. Even though she really knows cameras, what lens do you think is best for our needs for best layout pics?
A congrats to Locoindy76, a nice addition for the new year.
Lee: It great you can do that work. It does really save your aunt plenty of $$$. And when sweating that copper, make sure that there's a 5 gal or two with water, before turning off the main. Guess I found that out the hard way. Had to turn on the water even w/ open pipes just to put out a small fire in the framework. ABC extinquiser isn't a bad idea either.
Sue: Great pics of the layout. Good looking pines. Someone donated like 10-12 bags of pine trees to my club a while ago. Only trouble, they were so uniform and all exact size, we needed to start chopping at them and nipping out some branches so it didn't look like a tree farm. Larry is doing great on that curved trestle. I especially like that stone portal and wing/ retaining wall.
der: Happy Birthday. I like the looks of the white and light colors on the facia. Once sceniced and a backdrop will be a nice contrast. Real clean looking.
Paul: That's great news on the baby and starting to gain weight. Hope you have luck w/ the house hunting for your daughter. As you say, the $$ pretty much everywhere will need to level off. $400K here near Boston is about average for a decent single family home. And it will only be on a 1/2 to 2/3 acre lot if your lucky. Condos in town have just started to come down to something a little more reasonable. Last year most Condo or town houses in Cambridge or Boston were over $450K. That market has slowed immensly. Got to get that router fixed, and thank you for the thoughts for me and my family. '08 can only be a much better year than the last. Keeping optimistic and plugging away. When I post some new scenery pics from the club, you'll know I'm on my way.
Charlie: Nice evening out at the Nutcracker. I seem to remember a CN caboose done a couple years ago. Atlas or Walther's maybe. Might have to get an undec and paint one. Take good care of your old buddy. I feel bad when amimals start to get old and have problems like that.
Ed: Glad you had a great Christmas. And yes let's see, Hmm venison or Ryan's prime rib. Ya, I'm with you on the prime rib. It's good that you finaly have time to get back to the layout. We're waiting for pics...No pressure or anything though...
Ryan: Congrats on the Website of the week. Good pic of the flange greaser. You should see how many are used on the B&Os old Magnolia cutoff (CSX/ Amtrak). They would be something fairly simple to model, just can't use real grease....
Mark: That's great getting that room. I know you'll figure something out. You can also just say that your only stealing a bit at the ends for those nice big returns and 30" radius. A simple yard in the middle of the long run and industries on both ends, would make a great layout. Looks like we'll be seeing some plans posted soon.
Tracklayer: Nice to see you in the diner. Sorry to hear about your mishap w/ that bad fish. Maybe a blessing in disguise as to finding out about the low enzyme levels. You probably would never figured out what was the trouble w/o getting sick.
JR: What a beauty. That I-5 is one real good looker, whitewalls and all. Nice shot on the turn. Is that superelevated?
Johnboy: So you have one of those little dachunds too. We have a 6 year old chocolate mini named "Jack", a real great companion. Very smart little buggers, too. My daughters have him doing all kind of tricks, but he minds me the best. They know who really takes care of them don't they.
Jerry: Still having trouble w/ that pic. I only use the avitar that I moved from my picture file. It should do the same whether a logo or picture. That's how I did the signature one. Maybe it's more the sizing and not so much the link itself.
Jim: Sounds like you had a nice visit with your friend Linda. Want to see that second National Treasure myself. Does look good.
Jeff: Nice steamer, I was wondering , like Jim, how that Canadian power found it's way so South to KCS territory. Good shot of the backup light- like that amber glow.
Welcome NH I-5, take a load off and grab a bite.
Rob, GARRY, RT, Fergie and to all..... A Happy New Year.

Good Afternoon all,
Foul Rift: "Follow the Reaper" I love it! I must say that's very unique Welcome to the diner Foul Rift.
I still like the "If it didn't arrive in a M.E.S.S. we didn't ship it" as well.
Jeffery: I can't argue with your logic on that meal.
My Son William and I will be having Sausage und Sauerkraut today; Dee-Dee stopped in Slavic Village and picked out the Polish Sausage yesterday.
Still snowing here, might have to break out the rotary plow!
William and I were going to work on the bench work out in the garage, but at 19F we voted to stay inside and play video games and listen to the football games.
New Year's Resolution: [insert drum roll and fanfare here] assemble all the HO-Scale structures I've had sitting in this box before buying new ones. Yea, that will be a challenge since 2 of the kits I bought in High School.

Happy New Year, everybody. ..... and Happy Birthday, Mitch.....
Actually, two of our adult kids had b'days yesterday. (We're a finance couple and made sure to optimize the tax deductions when they were born.)
Welcome Foul rift to the diner. Hopefully, Ryan will serve more prime rib in you honor.
JR is using Athearn passenger cars. Nothing wrong with them. They stay on the track and look fine. I have several. I can make my version of the Nebraska Zephyr with them. Close enough for me although the prototype was articulated.
It's been really indy for at least 24 hours. It was 60 degrees yesterday and tonight it will be 17 degrees. We won't be on the kyak, and therefore, it's time for the layout.
Cheers everyone!!!
