Morning folks!

Chloe, how about a cup a Joe and some of that fresh strudel for breakfast this morning! Thanks!

Adventures never end from our next of the woods, albeit just a blip on the radar for most folks including our selves. We went to the mall last night so Ben could spend some of his gift money and also wanted to pick up a jewelry armoire for Monique that was on sale taking advantage of 50% off after Christmas sales. On the way to the mall we got a flat tire, Banged Head [banghead] we just happened to be close to the Toyota dealership, but it was just after 7:00 PM and the service department closed at 6:00 PM, at least we were able to change the tire under a covered area with plenty of lighting. It was quite cold out and I also had on a new pair of pants and my new jacket, changing a tire isn't a big deal, but when you are all dressed up in your casual business attire and new clothes too, it makes your think twice before you going to change a tire. So with the donut tire on now and about a ½ hour later we proceeded to the mall and picked up where we left off, Ben got his stuff and we got the jewelry cabinet and headed back home traveling a speedy 45 MPH with the donut tire. Monique made it into work safely this morning, and will take the van to Firestone later this morning to see if it can be repaired. I have a feeling they are going to try to sell her 4 new tires, they have 41,000 + miles on them and the tread on the flat one appears a bit lower than normal. Will keep you posted.

It's a sad morning y'all.

Last night, about midnight, I was awakened by my daughter who came crying into our room.  Between sobs she said that she was afraid something was very wrong with our Bulldog, Maggie.  She wouldn't wake up.  Now Maggie is very old, and so I had a feeling that the worst was probably the case, so while my wife comforted our daughter, I went downstairs to investigate.  Indeed, Maggie was gone.  I took care of everything, but I already miss her.  That was one of the best dogs we've ever had.  My son doesn't know yet.  He was staying the night at a friends house, so he'll find out later today.

So, in honor of Maggie, I'd like to show off a couple of pictures and a video of her playing.  I hope you all don't mind.

Maggie and my daughter playing.  Click the pic to start the video.  (It's not a long movie)

I don't want to kill the dial-up folks too much (Thank You for humoring me), so I'll leave it at that.

It's lunchtime at work so I'll rescue the diner from page two oblivion.  BTW, good afternoon everyone.

I went up to my mother's yesterday after work to set up her Christmas present (new computer and one year of DSL service) and saw something that would be interesting on a layout.  On Rt. 322 West I passed a trailer truck for Kovalchick Salvage, the company that owns the EBT Railroad.  The trailer was made from an old 40 foot tank car cut in half lengthwise with horizontal supports welded on the outside.  They use it to haul scrap metal.  Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me.  Something like that would be a little different on a layout, and it could be done for most any era.

Otherwise, not much going on here.  Still eating leftovers and back at work yesterday.

[Yawwnnn] Morning (or early lunch, perhaps), Diners!

Zoe, just a Dr. Pepper and a BLT, after yesterday's turkey sandwich. [urp!] S'cuse me, please. Thanks, Zoe - and what's my total so far? Well, could've been worse. Wink [;)]

PC, sorry to hear about your losing Maggie. I couldn't find out how to get to the video, but the photos show a good bit of her 'style.' Sure your son will be sad once he gets back home and finds out, and will miss Maggie. Oh, on the email bug thing, I might be inclined to go with Ryan's idea...

Not much going this morning, except I've been moving and clearing again.

Found out that a couple of boxes were mostly empty, so I'll be looking to go through and pitch/shred some, this afternoon or evening. Good to see the floor again...Shock [:O] (Just kidding - I could see some of it before today!)Yeah!! [yeah]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] But I'm not even starting on sorting the assorted screws, nuts & bolts yet, unlike some of you are. Oops [oops]

I'll get to work on my brunch for now. Everyone stay safe today (especially if you're braving the stores and that traffic!). Prayers for safe journeys to and from your destinations today (and that the shop doesn't sell Monique four tires! Seriously...).

Blessings,

Hello everyone,

We're in MI and things are pretty much OK. Thanks for kind thoughts and remarks. As I said, my daughter's minivan was destroyed. They were hit broadside in rear half of their vehicle by a truck. Grandson was close to point of impact. He was protected very well by his child seat, but still was banged up quite a bit. The protective seat prevented major injuries and he''ll be just fine. My daughter has a whiplashed neck, but that did not turn out to be anything major, So it could have been far worse, and I'm thankful it was not.

Cheers everybody.

Jeeze Luieez... Been a long time I haven't been in.

How to say this... Well, my old computer died. Finally. Luckily, dad bought mom a new HP 2007 20 gig Vista home premium with a 19" flatscreen monitor... Much MUCH better.

Christmas was good over here. Got a new drum for my kit, got the worlds biggest cowbell, (Not sure of that, but it's pretty huge.) and 6 freight cars. Two roundhouse 40' boxes, 1 intermountain stock car, 1 athearn 50' reefer, 1 P2K mather stock car, and 1 atlas steam era classics tanker, looks like a 11,000 gallon.

I also got some video games, and a racing wheel with footpedals. One of the games has pretty acurate physics, and I learned Shelby GT500 Stang+Extra HP=450 HP=Bad steering. I had fun trying to keep the thing on the road.

I don't think I'll try to even go back and see what's been going on... I don't think I could if I wanted to!

Mark

Edit: I did read a bit of this page, and saw PC's post. Sorry for the loss of your dog, PC.

I couldn't get my old scanner to work with XP yesterday so I checked to see if HP had an updated driver for it. Guess what? They don't. So I went to Wal-Mart this morning and got a new HP F4135 all-in-one scanner/printer/copier. It uses the same cartridges that my current printer does, meaning that I now have another set of spare cartridges for my printer. I got this unit just for the flatbed scanner that's on it. The kicker is that it was priced at $48.89. That was too good to pass up. There was another HP unit there that cost a bit more that comes with a built-in card reader. I was tempted but thought what the heck do I need with the card reader. I already have a good one plus both of my good cameras can connect directly to the computer if need be. I found out also that my old Aiptek Pencam won't work with XP. No big loss there. It's about ten years old and is having memory problems so it's about time for it to hit the trash can along with the old scanner (nothing wrong with it, it's just woefully obsolete). I'm looking forward to the New Year party my family has planned this year. It should be a bit of a blow-out.

Bye for now.

Good Afternoon from the north!

Phil, Sorry to hear about Maggie. It is always a tough thing when a pet passes on and I can say that I have been through a few times and it never gets easier. Dogs can be such a part of the family and they all have their individual personalities that are missed. Our cockatiel died last week but as he was nearly 20 he did have a long life. Still I do miss his chattering in the morning when he was fed.

We finally can relax after all the Christmas turmoil. It was our turn to host the family dinner and although there were only 8 of us it still took my wife 3 days in the kitchen to prepare. We did a prime rib this year as the chef doesn't like turkey so roast beef it was! I'm not complaining. It was done with a dijion, green and red peppercorn rub with a jus based on red wine.

I'm looking forward to working on the layout tomorrow and hope to get the hill done. My first attempt at scenery is turning out OK. No train items under the tree but I plan on ordering an Athearn RS3 when I've done this post. I see that some roads are already discontinued by Athearn even though they only came out last month. It will be a CPR version.  My wife did get me a book that I've wanted for some time called the White Rajahs of Sarawak. It's been out of print for over 40 years so it was a real surprise. We went to Sarawak(Borneo) a couple of years ago and I found the history of the place fascinating.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

Phillip, Sorry to hear about the loss of your pet.  It's almost as hard as losing a family member.

Garry, I'm glad to hear everyone is (for the most part) ok after the accident.  I recommend switching out the car seat for a new one; sounds like it took some serious stress.   I hope the other person has good insurance.

Sounds like Mark cleaned house this year.

I just barely made it back this after noon; I had a momentary loss of insanity and went shopping for a couple last minute gifts for my Son and Daughter (mental note: bring shield and broad sword when shopping after Christmas).  For my Son's Christmas present I'm upgrading his PC.  Bought a new mini-tower with a 500w power supply ($20) from Microcenter and a cordless key board/mouse, and a Full version of WINXP Pro, my dad bought him a new 250 Gb hard drive, and I bought my daughter a 4 Gb flash drive ($19) to help with her collage research.

This morning I had to replace the bathroom sink drain from the sink to the cast iron pipe in the basement, "while I was at it" my girlfriend suggested I replace the bathroom sink faucet. I don't think I did too bad, spent $60 on the whole project.

House calls, LOL, no sorry.  I was a finishing carpenter/ millwright for 4 years then I joined the Coast Guard and I've been a Bosun for almost 21 years now.  when I do plumbing my family measures the difficulty in my task by how many trips I make to home depot and how many trips I make to the first aid kit.

speaking of cow bells..... I downloaded a picture of a GP38 with a pnumatic bell mounted foward of the fuel tank on the left side.  Is that normal?  when I turned 16 my birthday present was to drive a GP9 (Conrail) around the yard for a few hours and I remember the bell mounted on the nose.  I also remember the hoslter reminding me of the 5 mph speed limit (not 38)when driving past his shack.

Afternoon.

I forgot to mention- My mom was happy for this- We had a white christmas. First one since 1973 when she left philidelphia.

Jerry: My dad and I have an inside joke about that SNL skit, more cowbell. He wanted me to get the biggest, baddest, friggen cowbell he could find. Mine is 4" tall at the hole, and 7-9" long. It has a real low "Bung" noise to it.

Looks like the Saturday Steak Special is 10 oz. Fele' (Spelling is off, I know) Mignon with Mash Potatoes, gravy, and asparagus.

Better get my three reefers over to Weston Packing... God knows that Ryan, Paul, PC, and Jeff will eat plenty of the stuff!

Also I forgot to mention that my grandma says I can use one of her basement rooms for my trains. The biggest one has a pool table and ping pong table in it, and soon a flat screen tv, so it's taken. The next one is her laundry room, and the last is a spare one with some of my uncle's old stuff there. We get to split the room for our purposes. If it's half and half, I get some great Railroad Estate. I could have 7'x12' or 6'x14, depending on how we slice it. Talk about a nice idea! I can't wait to figure out the measurements for a layout down there. The whole room is 12x14. Time will tell how much space I can get.

See you all later.

Hello all. Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas.

Well. I finally got over the fish toxin of two weeks ago. That was a terrible experience to say the least. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy - literally!. And while at the hospital, they ran tests on me and found out that my enzymes were almost completely depleted which is why I've been feeling so crummy the last several months, especially after I ate certain foods. I'm still not feeling as well as I'd like to but am hopeful I'll eventually get there.

I spent about an hour out in the old train room today, and sat the layout up for the 1950s with the NKP Berkshire pulling a freight with a good variety of cars. I go through these spells where I'll get fixated on one road and/or locomotive and that's all I'll run until the spell runs its course.

In the event I don't get a chance to stop back by in the near future, I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year. And don't waste your time making any resolutions you know you can't keep...

Good Evening All,

Went to my not so LHS today and found my I-5 neatly put away and waiting for me.

Runs well and sounds better though i now will need to upgrade my throttle to 12 position sound. For now with the old throttle it sounds fantastic.

PC - sorry to hear about your friend passing. Dogs in particular become part of the family and  the pain of their passing is very real.

I'll just have a coffee to go as I have a bit more to dobefore I turn in and tomorrow is another busy day cleaning and rearranging at the shop.           CUL, J.R.

Sad [:(]

PC.,

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear old friend.  I loved the video and it brought back lots of memories. My parents used to raise English Bulldogs and I  have lots of found remembrances of growing up with them and showing them with my parents at the dogs shows here Provincially.

We have a house full right now but no Bulldogs.  We have a mini Dashund that we rescued this past May from the shelter, that some one dropped of because he needed dental work, He is almost 11 years, but what a charmer. His name is Buddy. He replaces our Brutus which was the same breed and lived until he was 17 yrs. We also have a shitzu , Patches, we have had him since he was a pup and is now 6 yrs.  Our Bichon lived until he was 14 yrs, and passed awy last April. Now my Son is visiting from Spokane and he brought his Wheaton Terrier for a visit. That is like putting a Mack truck in your living room. But he is a real winner, we really like him. His name is Freud. (Like the Shrink).

So life's circle must go on in the dog world as well. Thank goodness we do have fond memories of our loved ones and pets.  I cherish my memories of my Parents and dogs.

Condolences,

Evening folks! (just coffee thanks)

Phillip - I feel so terrible for you. Maggie seemed like such a sweet dog from your vid. I feel your pain, as my Mom just lost her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel "Biscuit" last month suddenly. She was only 10 1/2, but just had some surgery a couple months before, & just seemed out of it since. Mom guessed she may have had a minor stroke or something, & then a major one that led to her sudden death in the middle of the night. She also lost her basset hound "Skittles" in early 2005 to cancer at the age of 13 1/2. (that was rough on me too as I was the one who & got him for her at the age of 5 wks.) She was terribly upset, but made a point to me (seeming to read my mind) that she didn't want another dog, as her age & health couldn't take raising another one. (the thought -did- come to mind though when we were a foster home for the dalmatian puppy a few wks ago.) & also it's good you have video to look back on, as I do both Biscuit & Skittles. I've transferred the old vid of them (VHS) to DVD a few years ago, but still haven't uploaded them for viewing online. (maybe I should do that soon.) Dawn has a program to do that, but she needs to show me how to work it.

Not much else going on except back to work Dead [xx(] fortunately it's been slow there, so no worries-it'll get back to craziness after the New Year. & speaking of, tomorrow's my early day, so I better hit the sack. Nite all!

Good Morning All,

I'll have one of Bills' donuts and a regular to go please. Just ducked back into the house while the car warms up enough to scrape the ice off. Rained on and off last night which froze, but no real problems except for the pack ice on the car windows. CUL, J.R.

***JR, sharp looking loco there. Congrats!

Heavy rain & a few blasts of thunder since 6:00 this morning. Got the hose transfering water out of the tank here at the house, although the way it's coming down it will still probably overflow. Crawling back to bed for a bit...still feel wiped out. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Good morning, Diners! Zoe, a cup of coffee and one of those twisty donuts, please. Thanks!

Well, looks like most of you have been busy - I see Mark's got some possible layout space, and several nice new freight cars (and that cowbell...Wink [;)]) Way to go, Hoople!

CNCharlie is getting a new loco - are you generally an Alco fan, Charlie, or is this a change-of-pace for you?

Lee, you have to be careful about letting the girlfriend know that you can fix stuff - you end up with more things on the HD list that Dick mentioned. Whistling [:-^]

Jerry, on your problem with your avatar image - have you uploaded it to the website here? Maybe that's the glitch.Confused [%-)]

Paul, you don't think your granddaughter was trying to hint that she'd like a laptop of her own, do you? Wink [;)] Or do they have one at her home?

Tracklayer, hope you get your enzymes back up where you're feeling okay again. Sounds like that's been a long road getting back to your usual self.

JR, I'm with Lee about your new engine - love the whitewall tires on that! Thumbs Up [tup] Good runner, too, huh?

Looks like most of us are getting some today. We're supposed to have rain most of the day, with that itsy-bitsy chance of any of it freezing on us. (Not really likely, though) My friend who's coming up from Memphis will probably have three hours of driving in it Thumbs Down [tdn] - sorry for her.

About time for me to finish clearing the dining room table and a few last things in the living room (aka temporary spare bedroom) cleared out. Then I may make a trip by the LHS to see what they've got in. In looking at my stock of freight car kits, it appears I have over 20 that I need to assemble yet. Blush [:I] Think I know what one of my New Year resolutions should be...

Everyone drive careful in this rain (or snow up Hoople's and Sue's way - Johnboy, what kind of moisture have you been getting up there?). Good day for a nice bowl of soup, stew, or chili today. Yeah!! [yeah]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
