Evening, Diners - Janie, just a cup of hot chocolate to go, please. Thanks!

Jim, duuuuhhhh, I guess I misunderstood the question!

Hey, PC, it actually can depend on some other factors, like:

How many degrees of the specific radius will the loco or cars travel? Since (in HO for these examples) if you have a short stretch, of say, 18" radius track (and 10 degrees or 15 degrees of curve), you could get an 85' heavyweight passenger car to go around it, so long as the adjoining track was of wider radius or even straight (the so-called 'infinite' radius Wink [;)]). On the other hand, if that same car has to go around 45 or 60 degrees of 18" radius, you'll have overhang problems (not to mention possible derailing...). But in the case of Rob's wife's layout, since the DeWitt isn't a very 'long' loco, any difference in the degree of curve that you have isn't noticeable. Wink [;)]

Jeff, very nice work on those diesels (and quick!). Thumbs Up [tup] Was the switcher languishing in the LHS's cabinet, too, or how'd you get a good price on it?

Paul, I guess your weather change means what our forecasters are saying will probably happen, too (mid-to-lower 20's F tonight). [brrrr!] The wind's been pretty busy outside tonight too - have heard it a few times this evening. I'll make sure I've set the thermostat in the bedroom a notch warmer after I get done posting... On the buffalo robe, does Mary Ann not like the looks of it, or the smell, or what? Wink [;)]

I got the four walls for my church cut tonight (well, rough cut - hard to maintain an even, straight line across board and batten). I'll sand the edges nice and smooth one of the evenings this week. Still need to cut out the walls of the bell tower/vestibule, too. But got it started - Yeah!! [yeah]

I'll head out for now. Got some stuff for w**k to finish up so I'm sure it gets turned in tomorrow (and counts for next Friday's payday).

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening All:

I will have a cup of hot chocolate also Janie please,

I got out of work at 7 and thought it was all ready snowing. But it was just the mill snow 1/2 mile down the road and it was all gone. Had to go to Wally World my daughter had to print some pics for her science project. So we made sure we had everything in case we get the snow they say we will. Started the snow blower and cleaned up the yard, kids filled the bird feeder.

Fergie you are a far better sailor than I 30 ft seas I will pass on. My father was on a sub chaser in WW2 and the first trip down the eastern sea board every one was sea sick except for the bosun and cap. of the boat.

Jim I think you passed the flu bug north went to work yesterday and had to leave to sick to continue and the heat and humidity did me in.

Jeff great looking additions to your loco fleet.

Bob at least you got the engine in place we are not supposed to get the snow till midnight.

Paul that is the only problem I see with the south the extreme swings in temp. hot one day then cold the next my sinus play h--- on me in Maine I cannot imagine what it would be like in the south.

Has any one heard from Allen of the Between a Rock and a Hardspot RR have not heard from him for awhile. THe last post he had said he was doing some rehab for physical issues.

Well I am going to watch the history channel the story of Rommel in North Africa.

Night all Kevin

Been busy all weekend with the Christmas prep thing driving from one store to another so its great just to pop in this evening for a relaxing cup of coffee. I guess that should be a decaf if it really is to be relaxing.

Good grief Fergie, 40 knots and 30' seas!! I sail on Lake Winnipeg and it is the storm on the century when we're out in 25 knots and 8'. Double reefed main and storm jib. Don't go out much when it is blowing now as the 2 dogs we have get sea sick. At least they have the good sense to go over the rail.

We just got a clip from that big storm that is sweeping across to the south  but it is still cold and looks like it will stay that way. Went the car wash yesterday as it needed a bath but it was closed due to the cold.

Nice work on those 2 diesels Jeff! That little SW1000 looks good.

Well my 2 foot warmers want outside so I'll say goodnight for now.

Good evening Diners: We came back from the concert before dinner as the road going was slippery over the mountain, and we didn't want it to freeze on us after dark.  Yes we have snows, but there is no cell reception (not that we have one - that stretch is the only point we can see for having one - if that's not too obtuse!) i.e. it's a bit deserted, and Kris;' mom (91) was with us.

Fergie:

Der John: If you paying as much attention to the dock as everything else
...looks like I'm getting there.  Kris' advice in colour selection has really helped.  Here's the two finalists in the tide mark stakes.  We're declaring #3 the winner. The next thing (tomorrow if clearing the expected snows doesn't bog things down too much) is to test spray a larger test strip and dry brush on that seaweed. If the airbrushing works OK, then it's showtime for the whole dock front.

Got to get to bed.  all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Hello everyone......

You are all a busy group. Lot's going on. Glad BobK's back. Fergie's in some huge waves; wow!

I just returned from a model train show I attended today in Tennessee.  I got a deal! I bought a Stewart FT A/B set, new in box for $32.00. Big Smile [:D] I like deals. I picked up a few miscellaneous other items, too.

Happy model railroading!!!!

Whistling [:-^]

Just a cup of peppermint tea so it doesn't keep me awake Chloe, Thanks much..

Tell us heartland, what road name were those Stewarts ??  CB&Q by chance ??

CP 5416 - Zack Hilton - Mount Vernon, IL

Jeffery, this is what happens to old KCS power.  Did you know that ??

Hope everyone has had a decent week-end and that some of the weather forcasts were wrong.   Boy I hate shovelling snow, but they say moree is on the way for tomorrow evening, but it will be milder so it will get darn slippery.

I will give you the forcast in the morning for what you can look forward to this next while.

Sure hope Fergie doesn't have racing stripes on those shorts yet.  He can really have that ocean view, it's not for me.

Well Mother and the dogs are all settled down for a long winters nap, so I guess I will join them.

Night all, Sleep tight, as Moms used to say.

I picked up the SD40 and the SW-1000 together. He also has some of the older BB F7-B's. They're all powered units. I intend to get my hands on them too.

Looks like I've got the top of the page.

   Heartland- thats a good deal!

I was typing a reply to another post a bit ago and bang, the lights went out. And around here, when the lights go out, alarms come on, the phones strat ringing and radio traffic goes nutz. So for the next 45 minutes, I had to do my job instead of spending Sun night like I should, perusing the forums!

I guessing the light went out due to the wind, it's the same storm everyone else has been talking about here. 2 years ago we had an ice storm with high winds, and the grid hasn't been up to snuff since. At least thats what I'm telling everybody. Our town has around 800-900 people, we patrol a larger area due to combined dispatching, but altogether I'll bet we don't have more than 2500 folks about. So it's always a surprise when you get 80-100 calls at 0040 on a Monday AM!

Our room addition is coming along nicely, soon we'll be able to turn the (current) bedroom into a hobby room, and soon I'll be able to make trains move again under their own power. We spent Fri, Sat and today insulating, wiring, drywalling and mudding. Still, moving right along, and looking forward to working on a layout. Amyjo is wanting me to do it more than I am, and thats saying something! Looks like I'll have a chance for an around the walls shelf, a total of maybe 16-18' of trackwork. Yeah, life is good.

Fergie- take care aww hell, everybody take care. Fergie probably isn't in any more danger than Paul working on the farm, or Jeff recovering in La, or Flip down in Hurricane alley! We all think other people are in dangerous lines of work (or play), and then you hear about the 45 year old mother of 3 killed by a trailer coming loose from a truck heading north when she was heading south. You ALL be careful in whatever you're doing.

Even Ed could be bludgeoned to insensibility by a crazed Valencia! Indeed, it's just a nutty, crazee world!

When the lights go out down here I and the other fire fighters hit the road and assist in finding the problem. Saves the utility company some time and gets the lights back on faster.

Jeffrey- The DFD just headed out to a report of the lines down in a neighboring county, but it turns out it's farther away than first reported, so they are disregarding and heading back to the station. Around here, they don't let the firetrucks go out without a destination, too little money and too much gas used would be my guess.

They lights went out again a few times after the post I made, looks like it's gonna be a blustery day, so we might have more outages.

Just passing through on my way back to bed. Wife had to leave to take her mom to the Doc, so I got the gate for her. Both Wind Advisory & Fire Weather Advisory here. Always strikes me as odd how we can have the fire one right after a real good rain. Water tanks are full again.

Good Morning, Zoe - I see several of our morning Diners have been through (and a few like Rob, just popping in before heading back to bed). I'll just have a cup of coffee to go for now, and will drop back in a bit later. Thanks!

Indiana Phil, sounds like you got busy for a while there. We didn't lose our power last night that  I can tell, but our power distribution center for where I live is just over the hill behind me, so it doesn't happen too often (unless the whole city is losing it). I'm sure things do get hectic at your w**kplace when the power goes out. Shock [:O] Good to hear that more space for your layout is on the way - and AmyJo is cheering you on (or would that be slave-driving? Wink [;)]).

Rob, sent you an email reply through the forums.

Well, Better get myself going and ready for the weekday thing... See you after a little bit!

Blessings and prayers for a good week,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning everyone!

Oatmeal and OJ for me please.

Jonboy asked: "Tell us heartland, what road name were those Stewarts ??  CB&Q by chance ??"  Actually the are in the ever popular "Undec" scheme. Another dealer had deals on Microscale decals for $2.00/package in CB&Q. So you'll have to add $2.00 to the $32.00 price of the FT's. I'm not sure when I'll paint them because, I'm devoting my current model rr'ing time to added to the layout. BTW, johnboy, the ex-KCS unit looks like a ghost.

Jeff.... your SD40 looks better than jonboys pix of a real one in Canada.

Remind me not to read fergie's posts. I nearly got seasick reading a recent one of his. Tongue [:P]

Cheers!

Hey all!

Bitter cold temperatures and gusty winds greeted me as I headed into work this morning.  Temperatures are about 20-30 degrees colder this morning vs. what we were seeing yesterday morning.  Highs will only hit the mid 30's.  All in all, a great day to stay inside!  Too bad I have to do the work and school thing today!

Well, the wife continues to improve.  Her leg is very slowly healing.  We were able to go out to dinner the other night.  It was good for her to get out.  I think she's starting to go a little stir crazy laying in bed all day every day!

So what do you guys have going on?

Hello All

Well last night was something else!  Dick remember how I said don't believe all you read? Well "Da Weather Man"  sure botched this one and couldn't predict the winner of a one man race!!
Gales 45-55 my caboose! Supper time was suppose to see 55 kts Try 80! then 70, then 60 and finally 50 at about three this morning and finally leveled out at 40 at day break. Good thing it was dark at the height of the storm as we couldn't see the waves which was probably a good thing. looking at the manuals and the fact we were in about 150' of water I suspect we saw a few 45-50'footers  last night. Lets just say we have no Jack Staff to hoist the jack on the bow anymoreWhistling [:-^]

Dick: Tell me... the system that you just had... How much grief will we get? I figure looking at the NOAA site it should be reasonable as the low looks like it will fill blow its self out. Do you concur?

Der John: I concur with 3 though I think a tad more lime shad maybe in order, especially at the high water mark then go darker as you go down to the low water mark.

Anyway guys its too lumpy to continue so I'll stop by later.

Fergie

Jerry; yes I live in the "primary" snow belt.  Normally the "secondary" Snow Belt gets the worst of it until the shoreline of the lake freezes.  If you live view area code 44123 you'll see the shoreline and I-90.  I live between the two.  Everything south of I-90 is the secondary snow belt and they get double.

For those of you not from the Great lakes area:  The cold air from the Northern Plains and/or Canada travels over the lake picking up moisture (the lake is warmer than the ground) then when the air travels over the cold shoreline it dumps everything it picked up.

Most of the people I'm stationed with live west of town and don't understand.  I can have 4" of snow and downtown Cleveland can have rain.

The Snow Belt would be a great name for a freelance layout wouldn't it????

Fergmiester, what's the name of your ship?  Just so I know not to volunteer for a TAD/TDY job, LOL.

Good Morning Gang,

Chloe, with thoughts of Fergie, I'll need a couple of Gravol and a Pepto to wash them down.       Fergie if I had gone through a night like that I would be in a "Body Bag"

But it doesn't look great all across the north right now.  If you get a chance take a look at what the Pacific Northwest is getting.  All that moisture will end up here as snow, so I'll be tuning up the blower today.   Here is our forcast as promised:

Upper New England should have enough snow to start some good skiing, but around Boston I would think it will be pretty soggy.

I'll be working on the Mrr.today. I have to come up with a view block inside a tunnel. When you are entering my layout room looking to the left you look right down a 6-7 ft. tunnel that is at about 56in. elevation. So you see right through it to activities at the other end, and some in between as well. (The light at the end of the tunnel, remember?)  I'll need a tunnel liner the whole distance or it will never look right. I'm going to try a liner made out of black poster board and just either glue or staple it to the sides of the roadbed.  It is a run of track that I never have had a problem with, no derails etc. So I suppose by enclosing it that will bring out the gremlins..I will keep you posted on the success or failure.

Should get started as time sure flys by.   Have a great day everybody.  And CNCharlie be prepared, I think weve got a happening happening....

Howdy y'all. Cowboy [C):-)]

I got lost around Tremont, PA on Saturday! I took the car to a friend's repair shop for a good amount of work and was up there all day with my best friend. At least the car is running stronger than ever now...Although I am now broke thanks to Christmas and the car...

And am now awaiting for 2:00 to roll around so that I can pick up Sarah and spend some time with her today before going to work. I'll be on the Northbound local tonight and it's gonna be a cold one. I can feel it coming...Snow, ice, we'll get it soon enough here. Had a small ice shower yesterday. I don't want it, I ain't got a winter vehicle...

Well y'all, I'll be around. Later! Cowboy [C):-)]

in a SOUTHERN mug, "and keep it coming". Thanks!

Wild storms, Train wrecks, new locos (nice work JeffreyThumbs Up [tup]), it's hard to keep up with everyone. Busy group of folks here.

Wife returned home early after her mom refused to go with her to the Doc. (MIL is CRAZY) It has been decided "no family Christmas this year" (a first), as the siblings are all fed up and want time away from the craziness. I can't blame them one bit.

Had a real nice rain here last night. All the tanks, troughs & buckets are topped off. NICE!

***Jim, sent you another email with details. Thanks!

Have a great day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Lee

Yes I can vouch for that.

Rob, sorry you have to deal with all of that.  Sometimes family can be very trying, huh?

Good Evening All

With all this talk of weather I think we should have a weekly contest of "Who's had the worst weather of the week!"

I win Iwin!

Some how I don't think I'm the winner here, maybe whiner, but no winner. Anyway here we be on the Tail of the Banks as it blows 50 kts with 30' seas and building should die down to a mere 40 knots over night. Good thing is we're hove too and making about 2 knots. The Old Girl makes for a nice gentle ride with the odd occassional snap to keep you on your toes.

Lee: A bos'n eh! I'd be lost without mine one of those jobs that is indispensable but without the credit. How many years you have punched in total? I'm on my 27th.

Der John: If you paying as much attention to the dock as everything else it will look awsome. I guess NFLD got about 2' of snow today. We had squalls go through all afternoon.

Bob: Loved the picture of the layout the other day have anymore?

Needless to say I'm not getting any modelling done .

Later All

Fergie

I don't think so!!!! I believe I'm the winner this week.

Colby, you may have a lot of snow and such, but at least you have solid ground under your feet.  Fergie doesn't!
