Evening Gang: I finally caught up with my friend Tony's mom. He's in really bad shape. The cancer got into his brain. It was surrounded by a cist that was filling with water. They removed the cist but he's not able to talk very well. He's in a hospital getting therapy. Send some prayers his way, please.
The Polar Express is on the TV. It's really a good movie. I went to the VA again and meet my new doctor. She's really very nice and we had a good meeting. The VA has stopped giving out Avandia so she's trying to get me Actos. The same familly as Avandia without the problems. She did increase my med for colestarol. The good is a bit low, the bad is low also and in the ball park. I need to lose some weight. She didn't say so it's just some thing I know that I need to do.
I got up at 6am today and headed to the basement and my drawing board. I have to start over on the plans for Clark Garden's HO layout. I goofed and did the first floor plan in 1 inch scale instead of 3/4 inch scale. That's what I get for working late.
Scoot thanks for the info on the EOTDs. I've always called them FREDs myself.
Jeess I'm getting wordy tonight.
Good Night All

The best part? Is my HO PE that;'s almost ready for her debut. I'm gonna hopefully barrow a Berk for the Naptown White River show and Open House, eventually though I'm gonna arm up my own Pere Marquette 1225. (the engine they recorded from)
(PS. To all Hoosiers, PLEASE come by! It'll be a blast.)
BTW, as I recall, Freds are Flashers, and the most EOTDs are solid/ broadcasters. Could be wrong

***Paul, sorry about your friend's mom. That sounds dreadful.
Quick HO question: How many of these (HO Atlas Code 83 Super Flex - 36" sections) would I need to make a smalle size oval? Thanks!
Wife brought her dad out to the farm the other day and we walked him around some. As she said last night to me, he is not the father she knew and grew up with, that person is gone. It was almost like leading around a toddler or puppy. Very sad.
All for tonight. Take care all. Rob

Depends how small a circle I'm sure some could do it with one if you have a 0-4-0 switcher lol but I would say 6 you should get a fair circle about 3' X 6' I believe thats close

Good evening, Chloe, Diners! I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, please.
Thanks!
Yep Dick, I am no longer 60 today (about 3:15 a.m., if I recall correctly).
I've been drawing plans for the church I had talked about earlier (loosely based on Main Street Heritage's First Community Church kit). Scanned in some board and batten sheets and some shingles sheets, and then printed those out on paper. Did like DerJohn has done, and made myself a paper mockup of the basic shape and have it sitting on the current sections. Looks smaller than I would've expected it to, but it may still be about prototypical size. I'll look at it over the weekend and then decide if I want to try it larger or start cutting out the wall pieces as is. It's about 2-1/2" X 3-1/2", plus the bell tower/vestibule is added on the side and is about 1" X 1" currently.
Bob K., good to hear from you again. Guess you could start out as a consultant/advisor for the guy working on the scenery, and then when you feel more up to it, do some of the actual scenicking yourself as well.
Scott, good to see you found the way to the new Diner pretty easily. SOunds like things are going well for you in both the professional and social areas. Stop back in anytime!
Jerry, glad you have things running okay again with the (new) computer setup.
Rob, hope things get better there for you and all involved. Will keep you all in in the meantime. On your HO question, I'd agree with RT - depends on how snug of a circle you want - and how long your loco's wheelbase is... What size space is she wanting to stay within for her coffee table layout? That might make a difference.
JohnBoy, no offense, but I'm glad I don't like in Sasketchewan - or Winnepeg, CNRCharlie! But then again, come next August, I'll be wishing I lived a bit closer to either of you folks, probably...
This weekend I'm supposed to be the backup, but tomorrow morning I'm covering as the primary on-call while the guy who's the primary the rest of the weekend goes to a funeral (I think it's someone connected to his wife that died). It's just from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. for the primary, so I'll be able to go do laundry after that, hopefully (and get back to MRR'ing!).
Well, I'd better get going - about time to head for the bed. Prayers for warmth for our more northerly friends, and for healing and comfort for those needing that.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Good evening Crew, sure glad most of you could make it.
Cloe, i'll have cherry soda and a cinnamon bagel.
A couple of you were wondering just where I call home. well Regina is on the Trans-Canada highway, 363 miles west of Winnipeg and 480 miles east of Calgary. I'm not in the north woods but in the middle of the prairies about 100 miles north of the 49th parallel or 225 miles north of Minot, N.D. Right on the CP. mainline. Their nearest Division point is Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan which is 44 miles west of us. Regina is the Capital city of the province.
I'm glad to be the front door for you guys and gals and will keep you posted when these Alberta Clippers get fired up. It is still quite cold but the wind is down so it is alot easier to take. They are forcasting a colder winter than usual but there won't be as much snow.
Well off to bed now, but the layout is going to catch it tomorrow. Portals, tunnel liners, retaining walls, boy things are going to happen.
Will check in on the flip side.
Night All. Johnboy out.

Johnboy, I'm sure the wind may be as much the cold problem up there as the snow is some wintery days. On the plains and prairies, it can cut right through you - I remember how Nebraska was when we'd visit some of my relatives up there in wintertime. Brrrrr!!! Sounds like your Saturday/weekend will be a productive one, with all your stuff to do.
Last night after I posted, I decided on the church I'm planning, I'm going to make it bigger - about the size of the DPM/Woodland Scenics depot (Coal River passenger one). So I may be able to get started cutting the siding for it this afternoon once I'm 'off-call'. I was also playing around with another layout design last night (though it'd be one that didn't start from the layout sections I already have). I'll post it later - smaller engine terminal and yard, but easier for the swing bridge/liftout and entry/exit.
I'm going to chow down for now, and then I'll get on my way. Hope everyone gets some MRR'ing time in today and this weekend.
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau (where it's a balmy 39 F with a wind chill of 34 F)

Nope, sorry! I'm in Indiana, so I get to play in the nasty stuff before you folks over there in Ohio. Since I used to live in Hudson, Ohio, I know that you'll probably get it much worse then we do though.
Good afternoon, Janie - how about some fajitas
and a root beer float, please?
Lee, I'm making the church walls of board & batten (styrene) (representing wood), but with a stone foundation under it. The shingles for the roof are a couple of sheets that I got some while back (probably bought out of a LHS bargain bin), and are plastic, but fairly well-detailed. I'll be using some Grandt Line gothic-style windows/frames, Grandt Line louvers for the bell tower, and some of their doors, also. Here's a link to what I'm sort of starting from (but I'm not doing that fancy of a bell tower roof):
http://www.mainstreet-heritage.com/mshm-html/kit-110-details.html
It's their kit #110. When I got looking through my scratchbuilding supplies, I had most of the stuff I need to build it (except for the Grandt Line windows, doors and louvers).
All right, Lee and PC, quit fighting over the weather - there'll be plenty for you all... Or as MisterRogers might say, "Children, can you say 'Lake effect'?"... Ah well, we'll likely get our share - we just get the nastier stuff after Christmas (like in January or February). But we don't get to make those 10 foot tall snowmen like JohnBoy or our Nova Scotian crew of characters do. (Should I be jealous?...)
One call out so far, and I'm back from that. Only one hour of covering for my primary to go, and then it's laundry time! Oh, joy! Not too bad out now - about mid 50's (F) outside, grey skies and no precipitation predicted this weekend except maybe, maybe some scattered showers on Sunday (if that).
I'll be at the corner window booth chowing down on my fajitas if anyone comes in and wants to talk, Janie.
in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you!
Jim, the glass table top is 4' across, so the loop needs to be a little less than that. The only train running on it will be that beautiful little DeWitt Clinton, so a tight radius shouldn't matter. I figured out how to make it an oval by building a rectangular table.
The "layout" will be under the round glass but (depending on how long a table I make) an oval track could extend under the wood top, perhaps disappearing into tunnels. Hope this makes sense! Because this will only be "run" when company visits, I want to keep it a simple (inexpensive) oval of track. My N scale layout on the other hand...

Not much layout progress to report, but Rosie-the-dog now has a heat lamp installed in her house, and the rhododendrons are wrapped for the winter.
I'm slowly recovering from a browser disaster. I have been using Netscape 7.1 as my default browser. I clicked on the icon on my desktop the other night and a completely new version I hadn't asked for, or been warned about, opened. In downloading unbidden it had over written all the 7.1 info, so I lost all my email files and addresses, as well as all my bookmarks in the browser. To say that I was annoyed doesn't really touch it, and I have uninstalled Netscape, and will never knowingly use their products again. So now I'm slowly trying to build back my urls in Explorer and having to get used to a different terminology like "Favourites". I even have had to come here via Trains, and the MR. (Just looked in the window a few times, no time to linger). Now I've got the Diner filed as a fav., so that's like old times.
CapeJim, were you talking about Firefox? Does it have a mail utility? Is it possible to copy folders like Explorer Favourites, or MS Outlook Address books into Firefox? I'm not too keen on Explorer or the Outlook mail. The reason I was on Netscape 7.1 was that the 7.2 didn't have any mail (at least that I could easily identify).
Enough rant.
I'll get caught up later, and maybe have some mrr progress to report.

Afternoon Diner Gang:
Fergie how about steering about 265 and getting the heck out of there? Just a thought. BTW that heading is a swag as I'm sitting by the computer and don't have a map or a clue to your real position. It worked for me when I was flying. Of course I usually didn't have a clue to my position ether. And I could always always go over hills etc.
Nothing muc doing today. We're going into town for their Christmas festivites. They are supposed to have a couple of horse drawn wagons and a carrage for rides. It should be fun.
Well time to go.
Evening, Janie - just a root beer float for now, please. Thanks!
Fergie, I'm kinda with Paul - do you have to sit there and just take the storm on, or do you have other (like a 265 or so) options? We'd miss you if the storm laid you up in the hospital (to say nothing of your LHS and some major loco manufacturers...) Really, watch out with that kind of storm out there.

DerJohn - Firefox is only a browser, but the same overall group (open-source teams working on both) also makes Thunderbird (their email client), and I'm sure you should be able to import Favourites (they might call them with the US spelling, but they'll work the same ) and contact information. Here're the one main link - for both Firefox and for Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/
There're links off that page for each product. Firefox (IMHO) is more secure than Explorer, and you can set your Options/Preferences so the program asks you first if you want to install an update or not (mine is set to ask me, so if I'm in the middle of something with Firefox, it doesn't slow me down or interrupt). Thunderbird is good also, but I needed some other features in my email client than what it had (and, I wasn't needing to import Outlook info). Take a look around their descriptions on the respective websites and see if you think it's what you want/need.
Hope that helps,
Jim in Cape Girardeau (your friendly Macintosh person, but sometimes able to help my Windows friends...

***Fergie, just two works...YEE HAW!
***Mark, when there is enough snow to work with, how about building a Snow Plow Train?
After reading that forum topic in recent days about switching scales, I decided to do the same. Gone is HO & N...it's all about these larger cheapo battery-operated shiny plastic trains.
Put up the little tree the other night to cheer the wife up a bit, with all she has been having to deal with lately. I believe she appreciated it. Although it has been many years since putting up a proper real tree, one day I hope to have time and energy to return to doing that. Already have a gazillion boxes of Christmas ornaments collected over my adult lifetime, stored away, waiting for "one day". At least this year I took a baby step in the right direction.
Hope everyone is doing well tongiht. Rob
Hello everyone:
We had some visitors today. They must have decided they had enough cold weather up north. They are on their way south.

Evening.
We don't have a tree, we'll probably get one in 2 weeks or so.
It's cold still, although it stoped snowing, except those clouds are looming about. I suspect I'll wakeup and find a winter wonderland...
Jim I mean Rob: If I had G scale, I'd be running it in the snow right now. As for HO, if my friend were over, I don't think he'd use his athearn plow for any plowing...
Well, see all y'all later.Mark
Good frosty evening to all......14.9F (-10C) here right now in central Massachusetts, and winter storm is approaching from the west, and a secondary will form on the coast Sunday and turn into a Nor'easter ( hang ON Fergie !! ). We are due to get 6" here and much more to the north of us, freezing rain in J.R.'s territory.
FERGIE: Get that ship out of there !!! You have two more storms headed your way between now and Wednesday and another by Friday.Your ship will take a pounding !!!
CNCHARLIE: Thanks for the updates, it has been real windy here today, and the cold has really settled in...a two dog night tonight ( only a few of us really know what that means ). So I see you enjoy "Num3ers" also !!! I see you are a short drive from me, about 2000 miles to the wnw.
PAUL: Really sorry to hear about your friend Tony, that must be really tough on his family, our prayers are certainly added to the long list.
DER JOHN: I really like the new Windows Mail that comes with Vista, no issues in over a year of heavy use, nice features too.
CAPE JIM: Happy Birthday young man ...., and did you get that new 0-8-0 from P2K?
Time to go throw a log in the stoves, talk later guys,
Well, I will probably hit the TOP with this (unless someone else posts before mine slips in), but what the heck. Janie, how about a nice cup of eggnog, please?
In fact, if you have any of those sugar cookies, I'll have a couple of those to go with my eggnog. Thanks!
Whew! Looks like Dick beat me to the TOP tonight - Thanks, Dick! Oh, to answer your question, nope, didn't get the P2K 0-8-0 (yet). They haven't come out with a ATSF or SP version of it so far (just Eastern roads, it appears). If I get a look at one, I might go for the unlettered one in the DC version, unless Santa surprises me with one, of course.
Rob, just playing around some with the dimensions you gave me and the sketch, how about something like this?
I was thinking you could put some simple station inside the oval at the top or the bottom, scenic the other area, and have tunnels at both ends. But you could fiddle around more with it, I'm sure. Hey, you might have scored a bonus point or two with your wife by putting up the train. The one I have like that runs too quickly, and falls over when it gets to a curve. Maybe I need to find some partially worn down batteries to use in mine...
Hey, Mark - build us all a snowman (well, snow women for Sue, AmyJo and the other ladies)! But darn, with it being the weekend, the streets might be clear by Monday (when you get to go back to sch**l...).
Anybody else getting snow? Yeah, we'll count Fergie, even though if he is, he probably doesn't feel much like making a snowman on the deck.... How about it - who's getting snow? Here in Cape Girardeau, it's still in the 50's for tonight, so we won't be getting any snow - won't even be cold enough until tomorrow night.
I'll be munching on my cookies and sipping my eggnog if anyone's looking for me, Janie. That, and looking to see if there are any snowflakes outside of the Diner.
Blessings and prayers (including for snow? Yeah.),
Jim: I don't know, it's still going strong out there. It's sticking on the roads, and the forcast for 5 days is mostly snow... Ya never know I guess.
Well, I guess I'll order some passenger cars to ease my waiting on the big boy.
Later all.
***Jim, I like that idea...adds some interest to a basic oval. I want to persuade Barbara to let the coffee table layout be for her farm & perhaps little zoo concept. Then save her circus stuff for a separate Christmas layout. Why? Well, seems like it could get pretty cramped trying to do everything in that one small coffee table area. Also, a farm scene would be a whole lot easier for me to make first. Final decision is ofcourse all hers to make. Although I will make it, SHE will get to place all her little animals & wee folk on it.
I must be getting very tired tonight, which gives a more gentle curve, 18" radius or 22" radius track? Need to go lay down for a bit. -Rob
