WPF shot down in a ball of flames - let's start over
Posted by mononguy63 on Sunday, September 2, 2007 10:35 PM

Okay, so this is two weeks in a row that WPF has been hijacked. So for those of us just looking for fun model railroad photos, how about starting over. I'll re-post some of my limited inventory to start off

Here's a couple of out-takes from the "aerial layout photos" thread:

So let's get back to the "fun" part!

I use Mozilla Firefox, but I'm also on a Mac. Hopefully Mozilla did not change the software drastically for the different OS's.

Let's define what you are trying to do. Are you trying to post a URL link to the video, or are you trying to embed the video?

Jim, I really like your first pic. If you don't mind a suggestion, painting the rails would really improve the realism. While easier to do before scenicking, with some crafty masking it should still be possible.

Glenn, even with just the image, the sweeping S curve is really very attractive.

I know this was also posted in the other WPF, but this is probably a better place to have it.

I worked on my Santa Fe Hi-Level interiors this weekend. One coach now has seatbacks, just two more to go Ashamed [*^_^*]:

I also did a lot of work on the new diner interior, essentially using the figures and details I used in the custom interior (seen above in the middle of the photo) I made a few years ago.  I know it's wasteful to have a new interior, but I prefer this prototypical one a lot more:

Jim, nice photos.  I like the use of the kitchen cabinets underneath the layout.  Good clean storage space.

Matt, good work on the interiors.

Not exactly model railroading, but a few railfanning pics I took this past week on our week-long road trip to Glacier NP and through Montana...

The first is a brand-new, shiny BNSF ES44DC in the yard at Shelby, MT:

I thought this next one was a pretty neat shot - Heritage I, II, and III, but not necessarily in that order Smile [:)]. SD40-2, ES44DC, and Dash-9 - pretty maids all in a row Smile [:)]:

Here's a couple of overall shots of my layout.  The only area not shown is a soewhat mountainous area which I'm not really satisfied with.

Hi fiatfan

I really like your industrial area.  How deep is the benchwork there?  My layout is in the building stage one module at the time and such an area would add a huge amount of operating fun.

Thank you

Stokesda - any idea where those are built? The reason I ask they look like the ones I see being tested outside my office window over at the GM Diesel plant in London, Ontario.

This model is a refugee from the parts box. Bachmann body, Tyco chassis and Athearn trucks. One thing about it baffles me, it runs fine with plastic wheels but will derail every time with metal wheels.

You all seen one side of my switch tower, so here's the other side of it. If you look close, you might be able to see the light inside.

Speaking of Weekend (photo) Fun,  I have gotten the Bandstand basically finished.  There is still a lot of detailing to be done.  I did a test fit last night after I installed the sidewalks (Yes I know they are way too dark for for concrete - that's 'cause it ain't concrete.  Back 1925 around here we used something called Slate a lot. Big Smile [:D]).  Here isa a couple of photos I got of it:

We'll get there sooner or later!

Hi, Frank

Thanks for the kind words.  The table is 2' X 8'.  Behind the backdrop is another 6" where I have a couple of tracks for passing/staging.

Yes I do work too!

I know I know, I am not supposed to be here but since I am here I will join in for the next day or so.  Anyway earlier tonight I renumbered a set of three SP units to the UP numbers and it was fun.  I ordered Microscales renumbering kits to do it.  I had to do three units

1. Athearn SP AC4400 #146 to UP #6154

2. Overland SD70M #9824 to UP#3999

3. Athearn Genesis SD70M #9803 to UP #3977

I actually have not finished them completely.  The Geneis SD70M I have just done one side with the numbers.  And the other two need the number boards done above the cab.  I did the Athearn AC4400 unit first to make sure it would come out nice before I jumped onto the Overland one ya know.  I numbered each unit to the correct number as well.  Last time I checked SP #3999 is still looking renumbered and not repainted yet.  I do not know about the other two.  Well here are the pictures of them.

Two SP AC4400 pictures

Before and after Overland SD70M pictures

The AC4400 in the backround (before)

After

The Athearn Genesis SD70M with patch and numbers only so far

I forgot to mention

I did not want to use anything on the oveland to remove the previous numbers so I decided not to remove any of the numbers on the other engines too.  I put the patch right over the exsisting numbers and it came out perfectly.  There was no need to remove them.  Now IF I decide to sell them to anyone else and they want to go back to the Sp numbers it will not be hard at all.  Well thats it  I am ready to do someone elses for them for free too.  No I am not a thief either

SWChief,

Very nice work on your interior Big Smile [:D]  Which paint brands did you use and what are the names or codes of the colors?

FiatFan,

A+ on your layout :)   I've saved your photos as this is very similar to the type of track plan I have planned for the layout I'm currently gathering supplies for.

Thanks for sharing!

Mikelhh, I've always liked your layout; it shows what a person can do in a small space with some careful attention to detail and obviously a fair amount of skill (which can be learned by most people).  Your photos have a, "feel," to them that's different but very appealing.  I know that partly it's the lighting but it's also that muted background; a lot different than the realistic photo backgrounds that are so popular.  Keep up the good work.

Two shots here, same subject.

This one was done with my old Aiptek VGA camera and needed extensive editing to sharpen it.

This one was done with my Casio QV100 VGA camera and has had no editing.

Same shot as above, sharpened 25%.

Now, anybody who wants me to use the camera from the first shot, speak up now. Geep unit, you have no say in this, so don't even bother.

Bapou, those are some very cool looking tanksCool [8D]

I've seen quite a number of prototype tanks similar to your models.  If you don't want to heavily weather them, just consider applying washes of thin streaks of rust where the piping connects to the top of each tank.  Seal with dull coat.

I like the second shot better than the first because it focuses more on whats in the foreground than the background. The first pictures shows a blurry SD40-2 in front of a crisp A/C unit. The second photo is the opposite. I say, use whichever camera suites the situation.

I just wish this forum was a TROLL-FREE ZONE.
