Well I'm glad that it wasn't just me that felt somewhat offended by some of the generalisations being made. I do believe that this is one of the best hobbies out there, and most of the time I fell accepted. Wether it's talking to people of my age or to older generations. However there are exceptions, such us this example, where something happens and low and behold, a group of individuals are being looked apon as one, because of the actions of a single person. True this example does somewhat bug me, but I don't think we should take radical actions. I for one am going to keep doing as I always have: being respectful honest and truthfull. And if does not work, well in short, I really don't think it's me that has the problem. My 2 cents [2c]

Well I'm off now, just finished my chemistry homework and I'm planning to install grab irons on a CPR Bud car tonight.

P.S.:

Thanks for showing me how to blow up those pics. Like I said, I'm in the process of evolving out of technological neanderthalism!

Tell me about it, you want to hear my thoughts, I like how they are calling US theifs, because we are teenagers, I think we should make a post telling them we are offened, that or we all move to, http://www.getphpbb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=ntres2 Because we are welcome there lol, but i hate how alot of the older guys see us as pains, we should stand up and post! First, a much easier link: http://www.ntres.tk/

Second, I'm with Geared Steam. We guys here love trains, and NOBODY is pulling us from that. Who cares about making generalizations, you know who YOU are and that is what counts. I do agree, though, it can annoying if they assume it before they get to know you. i have not had that happen yet, nor do I want it to. Just my 2cents

Hey guys, I'm not a teen but if you would allow me this post.

I agree, that person was making some very wide generalizations about teens, If it helps at all, alot of people asked him to tone it down and NOT lump all teens into the same mold. Understand how he feels , inviting someone into his home and then that person stealing something, he is feeling violated, angry, and wants some revenge, especially after this person e-mailed a threat.

Still.....not an excuse and the thread(s) have been locked. Don't take it personal, voice your opinions in a mature way, and respect will come. I have respect for everyone here, why? because you guys are modeling, its a great hobby and at your ages there are many, many bad influences that could pull you off in another direction. But your love for trains and modeling keeps you grounded.

Your parents should be proud.

Have fun and don't let the little stuff bother you, not everyone is perfect (especially adults) and sometimes you just have to things settle down.

Keep on modeling, and keep on posting, don't let the "old" guys get to you.

The hobby needs you to carry the torch. Thumbs Up [tup]

A wise person on the forums, who I've met personally, said some something that we all should know. Think before you post.

I haven't read the thread, nor do I want to. But from what you said, it seems kind of discriminate and stereo-typical. Some of us are really good people. I Think many of the older people don't like us is because some teens have disrespected them. If you respect them, and don't take what they say too personally, you will be fine. BTW I hope that didn't sound mean or harsh in anyway. I didn't mean it in that way.

Looks great Duncan!

Later I will post of "retro" photos.

As you can see from the pics, scenery is none-existant at this point. However the layout is operational, and I have had many enjoyable nights running trains. In the first picture you can se the station and the interlocking tower. They are both Atlas models, however the station (which I built about 8 years ago) will be replaced as soon as I find a model that closely matches CPR's stations. I plan to keep the tower however, even if the era would indicate that it should be abandoned at this point in time. When I bought the model I was between layouts and looking for a good project. I liked the result so much that I decided once again to apply modeling licencing to my layout. My story is that the local historical society bought the building and keeps up its maintenance.

It is horrible when the world comes to this. I do hope that the model is recovered in good time. I said it in the second thread (reward II), but I'll say it again, this teen, if it does turn out to be him is a serious disgrace not only to the hobby as a whole, but also is givin of a false (I hope) image of modern teens. I know I strive to be honest, respectable and trustworthy, but it is actions like this that overshadow alot of the good others do.

On a better note, I think I have figured out how to upload pics to this site. Yay, I'm evolving out of technological neanderthalism! (I did not make up the term, I was called it by a friend when I told her I have a total of 5 cds, and the rest of my music is on cassets). So hopefully this works.

Well, the first one worked. This CPR 4069 leaving the Williamstown station on my layout. The model is an InterMountain FP-7 and is has DCC and sound. It is one out of two engines that I have (not counting the B unit in the background) that are not painted in CPR's action red scheme. Although not 100% accurate for my time period, I justify them by simply applying a little of modelers licencing. After all, there were a few engines that still hadn't made it to the paint shop yet in the late 70's.

This is CPR 18 switching covered hoppers at the Co-op. The model is an early Spectrum that I found in the used locomotive section of my LHS. The model was already painted in the CPR's maroon scheme, so all I did to this model was instal a decoder.

This last pic is CPR 18 switching a boxcar at the Co-op's feed mill.

Hey,

Here's a link to a forum that discused the possibility of using real water for modeling. It does give some good arguments for each side. Read it and see what you think.

there was a layout in MR a long time ago that did that.  The guy had a drainage system so that it would empty out after every operating session.  i think it was in an issue with a Rio Grande geep on the cover.  I'll have to dig that out

Hey,

No worries, used to get it all the time. As for railroadnut675' s question on modelling water, attempts were made throughout the 60's and 70's (not 100% on dates, but know it has been done) to use real water to model water. There are a few major drawbacks with this method other than stagnant water. The first is that the area must be completely sealed, to prevent leaks. Second, is the relative perportion of the waves and ripples generated by moving water to the rest of your layout. With a real body of water, you will almost always find ripples or waves. It is not possible to model these features with real water, as it is still in 1:1 scale and will be out of scale. I had considered this method of modelling water some years ago, but abandoned it due to the problems it posed. My advice is to model water with comercialy availabe products, and don't worry if the boats don't actually move.

I suppose you could use real water. I think it has been done before. But then you need to make you lake/river water tight. Another big issue is stagnant water; it smells HORRIABLE.

I have actually done three "drafts" of my layout. The first was an L-shaped layout that fit into a corner of our game room. It was constructed with foam. After a move, the layout was relocated and reshaped to fit along the edge of a wall in my new room. How I was able to save the amount of track that I did, I'm still not sure, but I managed. My major mistake was that I had not constructed the first "draft" to be portable, and when reasembled I found out the hard way that you get what you pay for when it comes to bench work. So I gutted the second "draft" (which I was still using foam on), and redid the bench work and track in entirely. I did still use the same track plan however. My current "draft" has very sturdy benchwork, and no foam except for landforms. So far so good!

Yeah, my first layout was without foam (that layout got right past the tracklaying stage, then was ripped out). the table has become my SEC, which, as I have posted, does have foam.

Looking good Keith. My first layout I started with no foam, and I'm still feeling the repercussions.

Nice work Greg. Can't wait to see some scenery.

Athearn released more road names. They finally released there first ATSF FP45 "Super Fleet" Scheme, but in the blue bonnet. I need one it the War Bonnet. Hopefully in a few months. Also they released 4 more road names for there SD45s. I would buy another ATSF SD45, but I'll wait till the next run of SD45s. I hope they release a WC one. But I'm pretty sure that won't be until 2 more or even 3 more runs. I'm pretty sure the next names will be BN, GN Big Sky Blue, CR, MRL or NYSQ.

SD60M, a BN F45 is now on Athearn's Genesis line.

Well, heres a few pics of my stuff:

This is an over-view of my final track arrangement.  The track on the grade will loop back around, continually climbing, and will then cross along the back edge of the layout to the planned extension that will be on the right.  The flextrack is ME code 70.  The turnouts are Shinohara code 70.  They're just in place for arrangement purposes.  I'm still on the fence about using #8's (whats pictured) vs. #6's.  I'm going to be using code 55 for all the spurs and curved turnouts, as well as the turnout at the very bottom of the page leading to the actual curved turnout.  I'm using some old atlas flextrack to 'simulate' a curved turnout much as you would when making a rubbing of track to use as a rail-position template for handlaying/scratchbuilding custom turnout sizes.

Heres a picture of my first scratchbuilt turnout.  This is a BK Enterprises #5 point/frog assembly spiked onto weathered ME turnout ties, built over a Central Valley template.  Will be back with better pictures when its finished.

Recent weathering project:

another picture:

and last, but not least, why we all love ebay:

These are on my 'test' diorama that i'm working on to get my scenery stuff down before i get to the actual layout scenery (once class ends).  The track is ME code 70 rail on Central Valley mainline (background) and branchline (foreground) tie-strips, spiked with ME micro spikes.  This is what got me hooked on handlaying...  looking at track that YOU actually layed is quite rewarding.  The V&O hopper WAS built by none other than W. Allen McClelland.  I'm not sure about the history of the AM hopper.  These were used on a club layout somewhere in Illinois I think.  I should actually find out....

Feel free to ask me some questions or ask for more photos.  I remember being your guys' age and having a thousand questions (not that thats changed.....)  haha

Nice pics Keith, especialy like the picture of the grain train. The grain industry is one of my personal favorite prototypes. Might have something to do with the fact that I was born and raised on a farmSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]! I unfortunatly don't have any recent pics of my layout, but they will come. First I have to finish my "oh so wonderful" homework, LOL!

Heyy everyone! Thanks for the nice welcome. Its nice to have some other teens around here.

I do have some photos of both my layouts. Ill start with my 4x7

This first photo of my 4x7 was taken when it was almost completed. As you can see, i used no foam at all on this layout and im highly regretting that. I never did get the scenery right on this layout, as youll see in following pictures.

This photo is of me in 7th grade, running the layout for the first time with my Southern SD24.

Now ill move on to my 2x4. I am very happy with the progress i have made on this layout, and i cannot wait to see it in its final stages. I have just recently poured 2 ponds on my 2x4, and that is what the first 2 photos will be of.

This first photo is sort of fuzzy, because i captured it with my cell phone. The bridge is just an atlas code 80 plate girder, with the code 80 removed and code 55 flex replaced it.

This next photo is actually not a finished scene at all. There is a log upon shore, which i plan to add a fisherman sitting on that log, as i am an avid fisherman myself. I like to represent myself and people who mean most to me on my layouts in as many ways as i can.

This next photo is of my GP38 high nose norfolk southern, hauling a grain train. One of my favorite engines actually, is this one here.

This last photo is taken on the same bridge. This is my sd26 Springfield Terminal #614.

Ill be out and about around town today, but ill be back on tonight. Cya guys soon.

Keith
