I thought of Fingerlakes when I was writing that post, wonder why I didn't mention it... Mass Central is a good insperation as well! Oddly enough, at one point I was thinking of modeling a shortline on the former B&M Central Mass route, named the Central Mass...
I think I'll get a book about the Central Massachusetts, and if anyone comes up to me and tells me my roster is all wrong, I'll shove the book into their hands and tell them to read it!
I had though about leasers, but I decided that two leasers and three (if the SD35 is a WRS unit) home road locos isn't a great balance...
So my Digitrax Zephyr just blew... I'm going to have to pay a $35 repair cost, as the warrenty expired in January. I'm shipping it tomorrow, and the Digitrax site says it takes about 10 days to repair a problem, so it should be in soon enough... Hopefully it won't happen again...

Well, not to be too critical. But I did like the "Forum Jump" At the bottom of the page. I think it's a bit harder to switch to each forum. I also don't like it that I can't view all "My Posts", and that I don't know if I had read that post, or if a new reply has been added. I also lost my Maroon Type (Which I found out how to do now ). But I'll figure a way to get that back . I'll get use to it, give it a couple weeks.

The forums ain't too bad, do misss the "My Forums" button. I'll give you a detailed description tommorow, I'm to whiped from football to talk. I will say my right calf muscle cramped when the team was on their 20 or 30, I accidently came out a play (wasn't supposed to), then played w/ a cramped up calf till they drove to our 40 or 30, then my left calf gave up, and well, that was the end of that, I had to hop on one foot from the far mark on the field (the mark close to the middle where they put the ball if it goes past that) all the way over to our sideline. I will also say we lost 20-6 and will now be playing for third place in the county next thursday.

Hi I am new to the forum I am a little old to be a teen but I like the direction of this thread, since nobody I know likes model railroading or trains, who think this no more interesting than a stop sign or asphalt (sorry for being random), except of course the older people it the near by NMRA sanctioned local club; their great people I am glad to be able to talk about this stuff with them but I can't visit them frequently.
My fav. roads are NYC,B&A, B&M, NH, B&O, WM, DL&W, ERIE, C&O, DT&I, AA, SOO line, C&NW, MILW, DMIR, EJ&E, NKP, GTW, WAB, ACY, DRG&W, WP, SP,S&SW , TP, UP.
Anyways... I am Girish, I live in the Detroit, MI area I plan to model a railroad in the Pittsburgh region and the Western Slopes of the Alleghenies its Called the Pittsburgh, Allegheny and Western (PA&W) [southern half] & Pittsburgh, Ohio, and New York (PO&NY) [nothern half].
It links Binghamton, NY -- Rochester, NY-- Buffalo, NY -- Salamanca, NY -- Pittsburgh, PA -- Charleston, WV -- Cincinnati, OH in an S-curved shaped mainline running North/South in a region where eastern railroads arrive at he foot of the mtns. and head west to the Midwestern States; the parent railroad is the B&O
The back story is Andrew Carnegie got fed-up with the Big-Bossy Pennsy and boycotted service to the PRR from his steel mills, so in an effort to provide cheap transport of his goods he expanded into the Railroad business Allying himself with the B&O and NYC, he bought up all the local railroads with the backing of the Pittsburgh comercial merchant oligarchy (P&LE, B&LE, W&LE, P&WV URR, ACY, BR&P, PS(hawmut)&N, Mongehala, WAG) and reorganized it in the 2 railroads, PONY and PAW which was expanded respectively: north and east around the pennsy to Binghamton, and south to WV coal for his steel mills. All these lines came under the family banner of Carneige Lines (holding company - CarneigeTransCorp. or CTC), which is the modern railroad's name as B&O and WM becomes part of Chessie System. The PAW and PONY will mostly follow B&O practices and adapt to needs when necessary.
There's also and intresting shortline subsidairy called the Lake Arthur Resort Railway or LARRy which was created as a gift for one of the company's CEO's prodigus son which ran from the Wabash Union Terminal, in downtown Pittsburgh to Portersville, PA a few miles north to a small resort town just east of NewCastle, PA.
As you can see I have thourghly thought this out while being frustrated with my limited resources ($$$!!!). I have a growing rolling stock as these are cheap and easy to buy and kits are good as they are cheaper and let you learn how the whole thing is put together, otherwise I would be too afraid to dismantle it. Athearn Kits are very adaptable. My motive roster includes a Niagra, NKP Berkshire, CSX SD-40-2, B&O FT ABBA set, and NYC 4axle C-liner, Pennsy GP30, BNSF(primer only) Dash 9-44CW.
Oh and since there is such and ardent fan base of WC i thought I would share this photo that is absolutely jaw dropping regardless of road! Enjoy
Hey AC10000CW, welcome to TMRP. I'm modeling a small portion of a small line of a small railroad that is controlled by the internatinal shortline holding co. SBRail Inc. (or Sawyer Berry Rail Incorporated, lol). Think Gennesee & Wyoming. Right now SBRail Inc. is in control of the Savannah River Rwy. (SRR) (the line I'm modeling), the Aiken Railroad Co. (leaser of locos and frieght cars that operated w/ the SRR), the DDWH (a shortline that interchanges w/ Tyler's layout (Trainmanty), the Pittsburgh & New York (a line that runs from Pittsburgh to New York City), and the Indiana Southern (which operates in the Indiana, Chicago, Ohio, and Kentucky area). The last two railroads where earlier freelanced roads I was going to model this summer, until I came back to modeling Aiken, SC, where my true heart is. My layout will be a 6x6 ft. layout that is 18in. wide and has a 3x3 ft. operator's pit in the middle. The line's two functions are to serve industries along it and provide interchange w/ Norfolk southern and CSX, who both have yards across the Savannah river in Augusta, GA (the one main true fact that's on my layout, the rest is freelanced). There is a small 4 track yard that has a small excess engine terminal (locos that aren't being used are sent there for a little while until they are needed). The main power will be an ex-Conrail B23-7 for the interchange runs and an ex-NW GP35 for the way frieght. If i ever model the yard, the main yard switcher will be a life-like SW8 (unless it just performs so bad that I still use my Atlas H-15-44 for switching duties there (again, if the yard is ever built). I do have a plan, but I'm going to change a portion of it, so I'll post it shortly. and sorry this post is long, it's the first time I've truly typed everything out about my future layout, lol. Looks like I might be getting more room from my layout. Right now the Computer desk takes up a lot of space, but with my sister moving into an Apartment, we can move the computer in her old room, which frees up much needed space for my layout. I can also expand in a back room too! This won't happen for a year though, but hopefully plans will actually materialize!
Also, an update on the thread. I think we should follow what TRP did, and not start a new thread at page 100. We should keep this thread going untill Bergie Kicks us out, then we can start TMRP 2.

That's a neat history you've got, it seems very realistic to me, compared to some I've heard over the years! (My older ones included...)
The worst back story I've heard that I can remember was made by a member of these forums...me! This was its website, which I still need to delete... It ran over the Berkshires with the same endpoints of CSX's former B&A line, and near the Guilford/Pan Am Hoosac Tunnel line as well...

This is my new story:
When the B&M line between White River Jct, VT and Concord, NH washed out, Guilford petitioned to abandon the line. The state of New Hampshire purchased the line and provided funding to open a new alignment over a route less prone to washouts. Consequently, the grade was much steeper. A new railroad company was founded to operate the line, called the White River Southern Railroad. A connecting shortline called the DDWH now operates the remainder of the line that was washed out on the East, and the line on the West side of the washout is currently abandoned. Start-up power for the WRS was a pair of ex-B&M RS1s, an ex-CN FP7, and an ex-B&M GP9. The RS1s were sold to the DDWH along with the remainder of the washed out line, the FP7 is currently stored in WRJ as a parts source, and the GP9 is still operating as 1701.

While I dont follow this thread (IE:Lazy), I thought I would comment on the GE talk. The Minnesota Commercial (which I see all the time) is all GE/ALCO, with a few MLW's thrown in. A whole batch of B23-7's, a B30-7, C30-7, and even a SF30C (rebuilt by the Santa Fe) are common place here. So your GE's arent that strange at all, because they are cheap to acquire. And an old SD35 isnt that strange either!
But, for Modeling, Im just finishing painting my GCFX 3074's handrails, and then she will be pretty much done. Its a KATO SD40.

So out of that back story I had a couple posts ago I would start small and try to build that Pet RR resort shortline (Lake Arthur Resort Railway). So my roster will be thankfully small, and will be having HWT cars so I am going with small steam. ie. 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 0-6-0, 2-8-0, and maybe a doodlebug, come to think of it this lineup looks an awful like the Ma&Pa . I looked up the route on Google maps and I found theres steel works and machinery shops and a rolling mill, and near the end of the line there is farms and mills and there resort town at the end of the main line. That will be interesting: tourists-vacationers, steel, dairy and grain, an odd combo for a charming little line say only 50miles long.
But you guys are runinning a little more modern. Which is cool my fav hood diesels are SD9, GP30, SD40-2, GP38-2, RS-11, RSD-15, C630, U30C, SD45, and as you can guess AC6000CW

*Buy a pair of DD40AX's, kitbash them into one unit, and paint them in Pan Am Railways paint
*Buy a pair of SD7's and kitbash them into SD10's painted into Monadnock Northern Blue+Black
In the end, the Lamoille Valley equipment is what I'd be able to use the most, after all I'm basing the layout on LVRC, with LVRC logos on the RR buildings, etc. The GP30's would be leased to either QNE or WRS. The SD10's would be running a northbound gravel train on the QNE. The MP15's would be switching, or running a local on the QNE, and the "DDD80AXX" no one knows what will happen to it... It will be a show stopper, and might find minimal service on QNE or WRS, but I doubt it could take the curves on WRS, and it would be out of place in any society. The B&M equipment would be run on the club, probably on QNE, and will be kept at Home to run at leisure. I think a couple of the coaches will be used on Lamoille Valley excursions. Lastly the CCRR S4 will probably be used when I want variety on the layout, but since QNE interchanges with CCRR it might find some service life there... And I don't know why anyone would bother to read what I just said!

well steamers might not be efficient, but steamer still have more drawbar horsepower than the most modern diesels, so loco manfactures still need to create one loco with one engine on one frame thats exceeds 8000+hp, no doubt it will eventually happen, but for now it's for naught. and this is a pic of my fav steam gems that made me fall in love with steam, can you guess its Whyte notation?

you are a Wild Man you are!!, seeing UP's hand and upping the anty eh? I'll get back to you on the minimum radius requried and the radius that will make it look proto typical. The DD40X is 98ft 5in long (conservative I'm thinking coupler face to coupler face) these locos had what is now old prime movers, the EMD 645series, which was before computer chip control to minimize wheel slip and increase HP.
Along those lines, just for fun, I would like to own a UP engine that they used for fast freights on sherman hill at a sustained speed of 50mph, and no plains states' loco terminals turntable could accomodate, the special Union Pacific type the 4-12-2!!!!! That would be a beast, only russia one-uped that design. their TE was rated at 96,000lbs which is incredible considering USRA 2-6-6-2 had 110,000lbs and 2-8-4(lima built) is 69,000lbs and 4-8-4 Nigaras(Alco) are 66,000lbs.

Well i SCREWED UP on my benchwork and trackplan! AAAHHH! Two things are wrong with my trackplan i thought a 6x8 would be plenty of room for 24" and 22" curves (im planning a twice around) but i break out my bachmann e-z track 18" and 22" curves and WOW they barely work! My yard is also pathetic 3 tracks and one can only fit a caboose and maybe a 40' car! The benchwork is a island type so i can get in the middle. I hope i can save the plywood but im going to have to do some tweaking so my AC6000CW and my SD70MAC's can run without problems!

I like all EMDs SD70 Spartan CabDown. My favorite locomotives are any 45 series locomotives, and any 60 series locomotive, except the two window SD60Ms, for some reason they just look too much like an SD70M.

Alex: You could base your DD40 kitbash on what UP did to create the DD40s... The DD40s are just two GP35s on one frame, and with different trucks. So, imagine if you strung 4 GP35s together, except each would be articulated seperately. If they shared trucks, that would be five trucks, and with each unit only as long as a GP35, it could handle almost any curve. Think of it like an impack intermodel set, except with locomotives... They can handle my curves without a problem, because they have each unit only being about 50 feet, instead of however many feet the whole 5-unit (or the 7 unit set on the WRS) set as a single unit.
The impack truck sharing idea would work great as well, where each unit has a truck on one end (except for one of the ends), and the other end has something to connect to the unit there, on top of it's truck.
I think four GP35s would be a whole lot more impressive than two DD40s, and it would give it the ability to go around much sharper curves than a DD40 set. There are less axles, true, (10 compared to 12) but that problem could be solved by substituting an SD9 for the GP35s! Now THAT would be really impressive!

I think the Bachmann DD40 bash might be easier, and cheaper than buying 4 Geeps. Originally Josh and I were going to kitbash a few Tunnel Motors into an articulated unit on DD frames, but that fell through. Also, a 4 unit Geep set would seem overkill compared to a 2 Unit DD...
