 I dunno Ty.

I think the Bachmann DD40 bash might be easier, and cheaper than buying 4 Geeps. Originally Josh and I were going to kitbash a few Tunnel Motors into an articulated unit on DD frames, but that fell through. Also, a 4 unit Geep set would seem overkill compared to a 2  Unit DD...

But overkill always look so much better, lol ;)

I think you will need a job to afford all that, Alex! Smile,Wink, & Grin

I've created an operation lifesaver commercial for my layout, which consequently is the first video that that 3243 (my new U-boat) is featured in. Safety First! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsszZpC6MBs

Enjoy!

Where's the car getting bent around the front of that U23B?! lol, seriously, good vid. Would be even better if you included where the train hits the car.

The actual collision looks really fake, as the car is just tossed aside like a tiny bit of plastic, instead of being crumpled around the plow of the engine like would really happen. Also, a sound effect would be a bit tricky, as I'd have to find a collision sound and combine it with the locomotive horn (I actually recorded it on an MBTA F40PH-2C in Worcester, MA) to sound right.

Alex: You're probably right. Four geeps would be a lot more expensive than two DD40s. It would still look really cool though!Smile,Wink, & Grin

I thought that the video was good.

Like I said, I want to make one too. It would be hard, but I would like to make the car out of tin foil, or at least modify the side that would get hit. It would take forever, but if you weighted it after, it would be pretty spectacular!! You wouldn't need to get windows or anything fancy, because you wouldn't see it if the camera was facing the train.

Just a thought.

What do you think? Good idea?

Uh, how would you not see windows if the camera was facing the train? Do cars in Canada not have side windows?Smile,Wink, & Grin

All kidding aside, that would look pretty neat. I might try wrapping the tin foil around a scale auto to get the contours right. Also, a convertable would be easiest, as you don't have to make side windows. Plus you get to see what happens to the figure inside... Mischief I'll do that, if I can figure out how to do wheels...

You don't need to do wheels. Just use the original ones!

They don't get too damaged in an accident.

I mean if you are facing the train, the half car out of tin foil won't be seen, only the plastic side.

lol! This should be a whole new thread on how to make a really prototypical train vs car accident!

Tinfoil may still be too "strong" by itself, so why not rig up something like a small plastic washer on a piece of fishing line that you feed through a small hole in the tinfoil, with the washer on the outside (where you wouldnt see if if the camera was facing the train). Feed the line under the car, and out of the cameras eye, and when the train hits, simply pull the line, it will pull the washer into the tinfoil, and you will get a huge impact! Just remember not to pull to tightly or else the washer will go through the tinfoil instead of just compacting it( which could be really cool as well!!!)

Tin foil might work. If you trying to make it so the locomotive bends it, depending on how tick the foil is, the locomotive might not be able to bend it. It's worth a shot though. You could also get a cheap plastic car and bend it for an "After" collision.

Well it is final; I do get to get more space for my layout. I'm not sure when building will start. But it probably won't be for a while.

Maybe you could make a car out of paper, then put some lead in it so it doesn't go flying.

Wonder what it would look like if a real car got hit by an operating rotary plow. My model does nothing to a model car.

While searching youtube for a BN f45 footage I came across these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9y5ikK6OAQ&feature=related WC45 on a CSX train

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-ulNpjIRIU&feature=related HO DD35 and U50

I did find some cool BN footage though.

If ya'll are doing a double DD 40, you think yall could do a double F45?

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I considered that today, when at the White Elephant section was an OLD F45 with only 1 truck and no axles...

I went up to the South Shore show today and watched as Bill broke everything... Big Smile Inside Joke

I think Tin foil would work, but you'd have the brace the part away from the loco, so inside of being just pushed along, it gets crumpled. and dragged.

BTW, wouldn't tin foil cause a short?

It's too bad that F45 wasn't with two other 45 model units. But that's still a cool helper consist, and some nice power on the head end too! The GE U30Cs and C30-7 are my favorite GEs. I miss the old BN.

Tyler, I think you should try the Tin Foil car idea.

That's the closest I've found in BN, there is only an SD40-2 breaking it up.

 I have a ATSF F45, SD45, SD45, F45 consist picture some where. It's a MRP ad, but I liked the picture alot.

I'm hopefully getting 2, with at least one being sound equipped. Athearns dates for them are early november for sound, mid-december for non-sound. Just in time for Christmas. Unfortunealy, there are only 3 numbers being done, and they aren't doing the GN version in BN either.Sign - Dots

As for the GE U30C, maybe it's the Alco trying to get out.

(You should check out www.railpictures.net they have some nice rosters of BN F45s)

I found a picture on RP that had a SD45, SD45B, SD45B, SD45 consist on the ATSF.

EDIT: Here's a few I turned up. What I wouldn't do if I ahd a chance to see these!

 I might try tin foil...

Also, I just found out that the WRS initials aren't just mine...
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=298919

They are used by Wilmer Rail Services (reporting marks WRS) down in Texas somewhere... So, in my reality, WRS had the initials first...

Not the end of the world, after all, I don't think anyone has really heard of Widmer Rail Services, right? Laugh

As for the SD45 ABBA sets, how did they come about? Were the B's wreck rebuilds or something?

I'm happy, because I got a $100 bill from my grandma (the one in Florence) for working so hard this weekend. I'm gonna spend it on a new Packers hat, then a Walthers catalog, and then who knows what else.

I think ATSF might of just rebuilt a few into SD45Bs, just like they did with some SD45-2. They also could of been wrecks, and did what the BN did. I'll have to look into it more.

Looks like ATSF only rebuilt 3 SD45s into B units. I didn't find anything as why they rebuilt them into B units. But I did find out one made it untill 2004! ATSF also rebuilt 8 SD45-2s into B units, which can still be seen today. Other wise, I'm not sure why ATSF rebuilt units into B units. They had the A-B-B-A F units, A-B-B-A SD45s, A-B-B-A SD45-2s, and A-B-B-A GP60s. Not sure why ATSF wanted B units.

Tyler I hope you don't get sued for copyright issues Tongue

Well, as long as the only side of 1701 people see is the side with the number on it, I'm good! Not likely for me to turn the loco around to show the WRS initials, because then you'd have to look at the back of the loco to see the number... The front doesn't have numbers in the numberboards, and only one side of the cab has them, because I think someone ran out of decals...Tongue

I got the video of the South Shore Model Railroad Club's open house up, and this one I think is comparable to the videos of my home layout, as I deleted the audio and dubbed in prototype audio... So now you can't hear the little kids talking about the trains, and the member asking me if I'm doing a school project... (he sounded rather surprised to hear that I'm a modeler myself...) I wish I could videotape trains for a school project!Smile,Wink, & Grin

I don't have time for Skype! I barely have time for the forums! I'm skimming through the forums and doing homework at the same time, now Skype, that would be too much, wouldn't it?

What are you complaining about? You aren't even online! GRRR!?!?!?!!

The club had an old switch frog that we sat on outside to eat lunch... And you never asked for any food, Alex!Wink

EDIT: I don't know if I'll patch it or completely repaint it. This unit comes apart really easily, so it wouldn't require any masking were I to repaint it, but it's probably the only unit I have that would be able to be patched, as the others wouldn't come to the WRS in their current paint, so they'd need repainting. This unit will probably be one of the last units to be patched/repainted, as I can live with it in it's current state more than a PRR GP7...

Sawyer, that's some good money!

you're telling me. my parents were gonna make me save $20, but I only spent around $77, so I saved around $23.something. here's what I bought:

At the LHS (Time Zone hobbies & Toys): 3 life-like shakers of turf (dark green, light green, light yellow), a fair sized bag of woodland scenics medium blended gray ballast, a tube of plastic cement, a paintbrush, 6 pieces of 6 in. straight Atlas code 80 snap track, and Great Model Railroads 2009. The guy there gave me a coupon a little early and let me use it, so I got $10 off what would have been a $60 purchase. I also took a peek at their locos, they had some Athearn SD70whatevers, a Life-like F40PH, an Atlas central of Georgia DCC equipped unit for $118 (I love atlas, but i don't need DCC. Probably would have begged my mom to let me buy the unit and not save anything if it was a $100 DC version), and some b-mann standard line I didn't even ask about, but I stuck w/ the scenery stuff.

Then I went to a store called Lids in the mall and bought a $27 Packers cap to replace my old one. I like it, and I still got the old one.

I've also gotten my RR's history created. I'm hopefully going to talk my parents into letting me ebay the stuff I'm not going to use, which is mainly my GP30 and some freight cars. I'll probably get a new shell for my GP30 though, because it looks like crap right now.

Aww, Alex, I was just joking with you. I know you're really busy.

Tyler, for you Chessie GE, you could patch out the C&O stub lettering and numbers with a light yellow, and it wouldn't look that out of place. I know there were a few Chessie scheme locomotives that made it to the 90s.

Sawyer, I hope to pick up GMR 2009 at my LHS. Looks like a nice cover! Tongue
